Relief Pitcher: K-Rod willing to be Creative
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 8, 2008 8:26 pm

In a report for the New York Post, Joel Sherman speaks with the agent for Francisco Rodriguez, Paul Kinzer, who says his client is willing to be creative, in terms of working out a contract.

According to Sherman, “When Kinzer was asked if he could formulate a proposal that would allow his client to opt out after a year or two if the economy improved, Kinzer said those types of strategies are what he’s considering.”

This is why I wrote this morning, here, that Rodriguez could agree to a two-year deal, with a third-year player option.

Like I said, he could opt out and become a free agent following the 2010 season, prior to turning 30 years old and just in time for Mariano Rivera’s contract to expire with the Yankees.  Or, he could execute the third year and remain in Queens.

Jon Heyman of SI.com recently said the Mets initial offer to Rodriguez was for two years, at roughly $12 million per season.

Sherman reports the total is $25 million with a third-year option.

By the way, Omar Minaya met with Brian Fuentes earlier today, reports Jayson Stark at ESPN.com.

However, from what I can gather, most people in Vegas believe the Mets are meeting with Fuentes, Trevor Hoffman and Kerry Wood, all in an effort to force Rodriguez’s hand – that’s all.

  1. Stop playin around Omar..We need this guys and his enthusiasm…he wants to wear our uniform …make it happen ..now.

  2. Coolpapabell says:

If Omar can actually pull this two year deal with an option for a third, he would be nothing short of a magician. Just think of the numbers we have been throwing around on this board, and to think Omar could actually get this done for considerably less would be impressive.

call me when the ink hits the paper

  4. i agree johanmartinez. can we say the same for Orlando Hudson?

  5. dominicanboy08 says:

so we are going to sign k-rod for just 2 years just in time for the yankees to sign him? this is stupid. give him 3 years with an option for a 4th year.GET THIS DONE ALREADY!!!!!!

  6. taestee says:

yeah, thats what i was thinking. he signs with us for 2. opts out after that to go to the yanks. i can just see the headlines now

  7. zen says:

the mets are about to cut off their nose to spite their face.

just sign him to a 3-year deal without opt outs.

he’s the best option this year, next year, and almost definately in 2011.

  8. Rome1224 says:

please trade scheinder to the red sox that guy was such a disapointment. i know we got spoiled with piazza, and lo duca but that “defensive catcher” could not throw out runners any better than piazza and lo duca was a cat behind that plate and scheinder was just ok. paulie would make some freakin stops back there it was unbelieveable.

There’s more to this possibility than the Mets preferring a short-term deal and K-Rod acquiescing to it. There are good reasons for K-Rod to be the one finding this attractive. He’s clearly not going to get the big deal he wants right now, but if he remains healthy and effective, in two years there may be multiple big market teams looking for a closer and he can enter the bidding war he was hoping would develop this year. If a short-term contract is what K-Rod prefers, I’d rather give him that than overpay for three or four years enough to get him to agree to it. There’s just too much risk in injury or under performance in closers- and I don’t mean that as a knock on K-Rod- it’s true of any closer.

  10. losmets57 says:

Well, whenever you turn your back, he just hints more and more that he wants to play for the Mets. And I am LOVING every minute of it.

  11. Dannyg914 says:

Agree Zen stop being cheap lol. I dont want to hear that we cant afford it especially with the new stadium, their own network etc…

  12. Maine Man says:

i am going to pretend that omar is ACTUALLY playing this smart and just trying to lowball K-rod. then get K-rod signed to a cheap deal and have money left over for Lowe or Tex… Just A Guess

  13. Bags_5757 says:

Mets are 1 of 5 teams to meet with Cordero… Wouldn’t mind taking a risk on Cordero…

    K-Rod
    Street
    Cordero
    Smith
    Parnell
    Shoe
    Stokes/Kunz

  14. Dannyg914 says:

I really want Lowe. Also dont understand why there is such little chatter about brining back Olie back. I know Boras is his agent but hes the youngest starter out there and hes a lefty. We know he can be electric and also horrible but at least hes young and lefty. I guess i just have a thing for ollie lol

  15. Maine Man says:

idk, danny, i too want to see ollie but i just feel that the ship has sailed. it all began last year when they went to the arbitration hearing.

  16. PrestigeHomesNJ says:

I would love the Mets to trade Heilman and Feliciano for Street. Sign K Rod, Guardado and C Cordero. Thats not that out of line.

  17. Rome1224 says:

lowe is has a good year then a subpar one. guess which one he is in line to have next year?

  18. Dannyg914 says:

Was it an ugly arbitration case? Definetly don’t understand why Omar didn’t pull the trigger on that after supposedly offering it to the Rockies.

  19. Rome1224 says:

i never heard of this huston street before this year. who is this dude? why do we want him?

  20. biomarco5 says:

I’d like to see Ollie back over Lowe. Lowe pitched to a mid 3 era in a terrible NL West. My ERA would be mid 3s if i pitched against the Padres and Giants 12 times a yr :)

    Ollie’s a big game pitcher. give 3 for 36 or 4 for 40

  21. MeesesGlokmah says:

Heck, I’d even give him $40 million for 2 years just so we can have him and get it over with. Then again, this is why I’m not a GM (let alone an accountant of any sort). Money control isn’t one of my strong points :)

  22. Dannyg914 says:

It would probably take at least 13-15 million a year i feel.

  23. CaseStreet says:

Gotta go, Tex wants me to show him around Queens tomorrow, so I gotta get ready.

  24. kingman 26 says:

Case, that’s great! I am so glad to hear that you will still have time after taking Raul on his tour…he said to be ready at 7 AM….

  25. MetsFan4Decades says:

I agree with some of you above. I’m in the the camp of trying to get Ollie back. Young, left hander, not injury prone, and when he’s on, man he’s on. And when he’s not, he’s at least entertaining – lol.
And yeah….I know that’s not conducive to winning championships.

All kidding aside, after C.C., I don’t think Ollie is any better – or worse – than the other FA SPs available.

  26. dominicanboy08 says:

guys, what about schneider and heilman for delcamen? delcarmen has closer stuff and is very young.

  27. methead says:

remember guys….he doesnt have unlimited money here. If he can get krod for 12 million for 2 years, that is great because he will have more money to spend elsewhere like a bat.

Omar is in the drivers seat, krod aint walking away unless the angels swoop in and sign him.

  28. jaydh says:

i don’t know why boston would make that deal, i don’t think they are that desparate for schnieder and they don’t really need heilman.

  29. metsflip says:

    Wow I can’t wait much longer…
This hot stove this year has been quite dry by every team except for the Giants…
It’s time for Omar to break the ice…

  30. ExileInLA says:

    Creative? Easy:

    2 years guaranteed, $12mm per.

1 year player option, at $10mm, vesting if he finishes 20 games each season, increasing to $12mm if he finishes 30 games in any one season and doesn’t spend more than 30 days on the DL in year 2.

    Otherwise, club buyout at $2mm.

Plus, if he “finishes” (see below) 35 or more games each season, instead of 1/$12mm, he gets to elect whether to make it a 1-year option @ $13mm or a 2-year option for $12.5mm per ($25 total).

“Finishes” includes a game where he’s brought in to a tie in the 9th inning or later, and doesn’t give up runs.

    Voila — “creative”.

  31. BiggieSmalls says:

If Omar can actually pull this two year deal with an option for a third, he would be nothing short of a magician.

Allowing the Yankees to get a shot at bidding for Rivera’s replacement in two years isnt being a magician.. its being stupid.

Lock him up Omar.. If we dont win in 2 years you are out of a job anyway

  32. DoctorK_81 says:

Omar really needs to sign Franky R with the quickness so he can focus his attention on bringing in a quality bat and re-structuring our pen.

  33. losmets57 says:

We really shouldn’t sign him at 2 years. Sign him now while we can get him cheap and with no competition. In 2 years Mo will probably be retired and the Yanks will be trying for K-Rod. Sign him to 3 years with a 4 year player option. 13 million. Do it.

  34. elephants says:

I can’t believe how CHEAP the Mets are appearing….talk about not realizing your weaknesses and improving the team.
Omar, who basically watched the Mets fall apart from the moment Wagner went down did nothing to improve the bullpen.
Now that we have a chance to get THE BEST CLOSER in baseball for 3 years guaranteed, he is asleep at the wheel?
Mets, who just sold 62 million in Luxury seat and get 20 million from Citibank are telling the fans, fans who struggled watching their team FALL apart DUE to a lack of bullpen! that they don’t have the money to spend.
    ignorant!

  35. Bags_5757 says:

I dont quiet understand why this is taking so long… Sign K-Rod to a 4yr deal with an option, contract breaking down something like this, Yr1-12mill, Yr2-12mill, Yr3-13mill, Yr4-13mill, Yr5- 12mill (option yr)… Overall 5yrs for 62mill… A little less then what he is lookin for…

Then package Heilman, Feliciano and Evans for Street…

    Give Cordero a 1yr deal for 2.5 mill with a team option…

    K-Rod in the 9th
    Street in the 8th
    Cordero in the 7th
    Shoe
    Parnell
    Stokes
    Smith

Not to mention, if everything works out for Wags he might be back for late september and ‘crossing my fingers’ the postseason…

That, I think would fix the Mets bullpen…

  36. Lazarus says:

I think that the Mets are playing this pretty smart. Firstly, K-Rod is certainly not the best closer in baseball. If you track him over the last several seasons he is actually in a decline from his peak numbers. That said, he still is the best available closer. Unfortunately for the Mets their bullpen problems are not limited to the 9th, but extend to every inning a SP is not taking the mound. So if Omar is actually going to fix the team’s most hampering flaw he will need to rebuild the bullpen totally, and that’s going to take a lot of money. Breaking the bank on K-Rod would make that task nearly impossible. Given the excuse of the state of the economy and the glut of closers on the market K-Rod will most certainly not get the absurd deal he was reported to be seeking. Omar is doing the right thing by waiting. He will make the best offer for K-Rod in the end, but it all has to play out first. I’m still not sold on his long term durability, but that’s another topic.
