I think that the Mets are playing this pretty smart. Firstly, K-Rod is certainly not the best closer in baseball. If you track him over the last several seasons he is actually in a decline from his peak numbers. That said, he still is the best available closer. Unfortunately for the Mets their bullpen problems are not limited to the 9th, but extend to every inning a SP is not taking the mound. So if Omar is actually going to fix the team's most hampering flaw he will need to rebuild the bullpen totally, and that's going to take a lot of money. Breaking the bank on K-Rod would make that task nearly impossible. Given the excuse of the state of the economy and the glut of closers on the market K-Rod will most certainly not get the absurd deal he was reported to be seeking. Omar is doing the right thing by waiting. He will make the best offer for K-Rod in the end, but it all has to play out first. I'm still not sold on his long term durability, but that's another topic.

I dont quiet understand why this is taking so long… Sign K-Rod to a 4yr deal with an option, contract breaking down something like this, Yr1-12mill, Yr2-12mill, Yr3-13mill, Yr4-13mill, Yr5- 12mill (option yr)… Overall 5yrs for 62mill… A little less then what he is lookin for…

Then package Heilman, Feliciano and Evans for Street…

Give Cordero a 1yr deal for 2.5 mill with a team option…

K-Rod in the 9th
Street in the 8th
Cordero in the 7th
Shoe
Parnell
Stokes
Smith

Not to mention, if everything works out for Wags he might be back for late september and ‘crossing my fingers’ the postseason…

That, I think would fix the Mets bullpen…

I can't believe how CHEAP the Mets are appearing....talk about not realizing your weaknesses and improving the team.
Omar, who basically watched the Mets fall apart from the moment Wagner went down did nothing to improve the bullpen.
Now that we have a chance to get THE BEST CLOSER in baseball for 3 years guaranteed, he is asleep at the wheel?
Mets, who just sold 62 million in Luxury seat and get 20 million from Citibank are telling the fans, fans who struggled watching their team FALL apart DUE to a lack of bullpen! that they don't have the money to spend.
ignorant!

We really shouldn't sign him at 2 years. Sign him now while we can get him cheap and with no competition. In 2 years Mo will probably be retired and the Yanks will be trying for K-Rod. Sign him to 3 years with a 4 year player option. 13 million. Do it.

Omar really needs to sign Franky R with the quickness so he can focus his attention on bringing in a quality bat and re-structuring our pen.

If Omar can actually pull this two year deal with an option for a third, he would be nothing short of a magician.

Allowing the Yankees to get a shot at bidding for Rivera's replacement in two years isnt being a magician.. its being stupid.

Lock him up Omar.. If we dont win in 2 years you are out of a job anyway

Creative? Easy:

2 years guaranteed, $12mm per.

1 year player option, at $10mm, vesting if he finishes 20 games each season, increasing to $12mm if he finishes 30 games in any one season and doesn't spend more than 30 days on the DL in year 2.

Otherwise, club buyout at $2mm.

Plus, if he "finishes" (see below) 35 or more games each season, instead of 1/$12mm, he gets to elect whether to make it a 1-year option @ $13mm or a 2-year option for $12.5mm per ($25 total).

"Finishes" includes a game where he's brought in to a tie in the 9th inning or later, and doesn't give up runs.

Voila -- "creative".

Wow I can't wait much longer...
This hot stove this year has been quite dry by every team except for the Giants...
It's time for Omar to break the ice...

remember guys....he doesnt have unlimited money here. If he can get krod for 12 million for 2 years, that is great because he will have more money to spend elsewhere like a bat.

Omar is in the drivers seat, krod aint walking away unless the angels swoop in and sign him.
