Free-agent RHP Chad Cordero will arrive in Las Vegas tonight, reports Bill Ladsen of MLB.com.
According to the report, Cordero intends to meet with the Mets, Cardinals, Rangers, Tigers and D’Backs.
…last week i noted how more than one person has suggested to me that Omar Minaya will meet with cordero sooner than later…there are concerns about cordero’s shoulder, following mid-season surgery, so the team may want to see him in action in advance of any serious talks…
…in the end, i believe the Mets are interested in reshaping and building up their bullpen with inexpensive, potentially high-reward pitchers on short-term contracts, so cordero is a logical option…
Speaking of relief pitchers…
Astros closer Jose Valverde is not available, reports ESPN.com.
“I don’t like to talk publicly about potential trades,” the team’s GM Ed Wade is quoted as saying, “but I can assure that Valverde is not being traded.”
Also, “The Indians met on Monday with the agents for free-agent closer Kerry Wood,” reports Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

The “Kiss of Death.” Valverde will be traded tomorrow.
This is the type of guy Omar would sign in a heart beat but a guy like K-Rod they want to play games
krod
street
cordero
smith
feliciano
… and Valverde. Ha.
Cordero could be a sleeper in this years free agency. When he is healthy he has some nasty stuff. Sign him to a 1 year contract maybe with a club option for 2010
thats what i was thinking, one year with one year team option. if he’s healthy then you get a VERY GOOD bullpen guy who’s still relatively young
I’d give Cordero two years now. Of course, I haven’t seen him pitch since the surgery, and the Mets probably have. But I think he’s a perfect option for the pen – not as a closer, but as a dependable reliever, maybe even to be a setup man. If they get Cordero, they likely won’t go after Street, but who knows, I’d love to see Street, Cordero, and K-Rod or Fuentes in the pen next year. Wood is nice too, but to put him and Cordero in the pen would be awfully risky…
If you have Street, K Rod, and Cordero in the bullpen next year then you have 3 guys who has had closing experience so if one got hurt you can go to the next guy. It is a win win situation if you sign him.
Anyone read that the Phils are involved in the Peavy to Cubs talk? I think it would be a three way trade. Don’t know who is involved though.
i heard an interview with cordero about 2 weeks ago and he said specifically that he’d love to pitch for the mets because omar minaya gave him his first break in the majors. nice to hear a pitcher say he wants to pitch for us.
“Wrnoted”…that’s a good one.
hah, Matt is nuts. It seems every post now he mentions how he said something earlier. We all reas your blog matt.We are well aware what you wrote this morning or even a few weeks ago. Usually its not even something that was out of the blur, or different from what we already thought
so funny eligoodrich… i was just telling one of my buddies how matt prefaces everything with “like i said earlier” or “as i wrote yesterday” HAHAHAH how bout- “here is what i read or heard from heyman, rubin, or lennon…”
haha hilarious
I like the idea of Cordero..it’s worth the barrage of “Omar only signs Hispanics and former-Expos” posts that will inevitably follow.
I dont quiet understand why this is taking so long… Sign K-Rod to a 4yr deal with an option, contract breaking down something like this, Yr1-12mill, Yr2-12mill, Yr3-13mill, Yr4-13mill, Yr5- 12mill (option yr)… Overall 5yrs for 62mill… A little less then what he is lookin for…
Then package Heilman, Feliciano and Evans for Street…
Give Cordero a 1yr deal for 2.5 mill with a team option…
K-Rod in the 9th
Street in the 8th
Cordero in the 7th
Shoe
Parnell
Stokes
Smith
Not to mention, if everything works out for Wags he might be back for late september and ‘crossing my fingers’ the postseason…
That, I think would fix the Mets bullpen…
well first you dont need evans in that deal. and clearly we can get k-rod for even cheaper, less then 4 years.
