Starting Pitcher: 3 Teams interested in Garland
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 8, 2008 7:34 pm

In a post to the Los Angeles Times, Mike DiGiovanna reports three teams are interested in free-agent Jon Garland, according to the player’s agent.

Garland is seeking a two– or three-year deal, says DiGiovanna.

Earlier today, at FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal said Garland is on Omar Minaya’s radar, since the team does not want to spend top dollar for a starting pitcher.

Speaking of starting pitchers

According to Jon Heyman at SI.com, ‘The Yankees are prepared to top Atlanta’s reported $60 million four-year offer to star free-agent pitcher A.J. Burnett.’

As such, ‘the Yankees are sending out signals that they’d like to meet with Burnett’s agent,’ according to ESPN.com.

By the way, Ben Sheets has been seen at the Bellagio.

According to MLB.com, Sheets may meet with the Rangers.

Garland is fine as a #5 to compete with Niese but is NOT an upgrade over Ollie Perez. REPEAT – Garland is not an upgrade over Perez.

SO is Omar looking to take steps backwards, or what?

  2. BiggieSmalls says:

Id love it if the Skanks threw all this coin at Sabathia and Burnett and they both went elsewhere for less.

  3. CaseStreet says:

If Garland takes a deal below $12, the yes. Otherwise I want Sheets or Ollie.

However, if Omar is able to sign Tex and shore up the bullpen, I don’t care who are our 4 and 5 pitchers.

  4. ohboy says:

this is not a shock as I myself prefer Tinsel

    (boom-tish)

  5. 31yonkers5 says:

Any shot in the Mets taking a chance on Sheets? Have they even appeared interested?

  6. Omar is not even expected to make a run at Tex, CaseStreet. The Mets are not getting him, so give up the dream. The dude wants 8-10 years and there’s no way he should get it, though he probably will.

But were they to do that, you’d really have to care who the 4 and 5 starters are because pitching wins championships. You can’t throw Santana, Mmaine and Peflrey out there with some other schlubs and expect to win because you’ve got Tex. Not gonna happen.

  7. MeetTheMets says:

I hope the Mets stay away from Sheets. His talent is appealing, but his medical report is NOT.

  8. PrestigeHomesNJ says:

I wish the Mets would go after Sheets 1yr deal with an option based on innings pitched. 12 million with incentives

  9. We Were Throwbacks says:

I have a feeling that even after we make a major signing during these meetings, we’re gonna make another big splash, be it via trade or free agency.

  10. JamesK says:

Is it Jon Garland promotion day? What is going on here?

Garland and Eckstein endorsements – exactly what this team does not need.

  11. mookie says:

I repeat if we sign Garland we should sign sheets. If sheets gets hurt Garland can pitch his innings and niese could take the 5th spot. If sheets works out we have a good shot to win it all. period.

  12. Sheets and Garland is indeed appealing. That’s actually a reasonable idea. I don’t know if he puts us in a position to win it all, but if he’s healthy he def. helps.

  13. mark4212 says:

Mookie.. This is what i’ve been saying all along. Sign 2 guys either both #4 and 5 guys or Sheets at 2 and someone to make 32 starts. Leave Niese in AAA to fill in when someone goes on the DL…. Someone will. Happens every year to every team. Organizational depth is the key. You don’t want the stiffs like Figgy, Lima or those types making 10 starts a year.

  14. cleonsvan says:

    kookie,

A case can be made that Garland is indeed an upgrade over Ollie for the money. Guy already has a ring, and is only 29 years old.Yeah I know, Ollie has better stuff but here are his stats over the past 4 seasons versus the stats of Ollie

    Garland: 60 – 38 ERA 4.11 IP – 211 WHIP 1.34

    Ollie: 35 – 35 ERA 5.06 IP – 146 WHIP 1.53

  15. JamesK says:

I really wish people would stop using the “he has a ring” statement as a case for Garland or Eckstein. Carlos Ruiz has a ring. Chris Coste has a ring. Luis Sojo has like 4 rings. Sign them up!

    cleon,

Nice use of the last 4 seasons of stats, knowing Ollie stunk in ‘05 and ‘06. Look at ‘07 and ‘08. Ollie is surely not worth what Boras says he is, but he’s definitely better than Garland.

  16. cleonsvan says:

James the last 4 seasons speak for themselves. All I’m saying is the debate is not so clear cut. You are what your stats say you are.

  17. mistermet says:

Why aren’t the Mets willing to pay top dollar for a starting pitcher? Isn’t this the 2nd richest team in baseball? The Red Sox, Yankees, Angels, Dodgers, Braves, Brewers, Blue Jays, Orioles, and a bunch of others are willing to pay top dollar…why not the Mets? This is humiliating, but unfortunately it’s par for the course for Freddie Coupons….what a joke- and they are going into a new stadium w/ a new network and raising ticket prices to astronomical levels. I guess they’ll resign Pedro and put him on the cover of the schedule- PATHETIC. Getting a closer represents only about 15% of this teams needs, but apparently the other 85% of their needs will not be addressed. 3rd place this year.

  18. mistermet says:

*Cardinals also willing to pay top dollar for a starting pitcher. So signing K-Rod means the Mets are done spending money? From the 2nd richest team in MLB, that’s’ unconscionable, unacceptable, humiliating. Why aren’t more people on them? This is a sham. Adding a closer means you’re just bringing back the same team, minus Perez, and switching Wagner for K-Rod. That’s the same team that collapsed 3 years in a row. This stuff better not be true that Cerrone is posting- kind of seems like the Mets are paying him to say these things and keep our expectations low. It’s nauseating.

  19. mistermet says:

    JamesK,

Luis Castillo also has a ring, as does Carl Pavano! You’re right, who f’ing cares about a ring.

  20. Dr. Alan Lans says:

yeah who cares about rings….they’re only the trinkets that they give out when you

  21. Dr. Alan Lans says:

    WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP

  22. Dr. Alan Lans says:

and really, the only thing nauseating here is reading posts from “mistermet”
