According to Jayson Stark, at ESPN.com, the Phillies and free-agent LHP Jamie Moyer are still having issues in working out a new contract, leaving the pitcher to contact other teams.
Meanwhile, in a recent on-air report for ESPN News, ESPN.com’s Peter Gammons said representatives for A.J. Burnett will meet with the Braves this week in Las Vegas, in hopes of quickly working on an agreement.
…the buzz from Vegas suggests burnett likes the idea of pitching in Atlanta, and could end up signing a four-year deal, despite rumors that he requires a fifth guaranteed season…that, plus no other teams appears willing to give it to him…
That said, according to FoxSports.com, Burnett reached out to Carl Pavano to get his take on playing for the Yankees.
Also, Gammons reports the Padres and Cubs continue to seek a third team to help facilitate sending Jake Peavy to Chicago.
By the way, ESPN 2 will feature a Baseball Tonight Hot Stove Special today at 5 pm EDT.
According to Buster Olney, per ESPN News, talks between Yankees GM Brian Cashman and CC Sabathia went ‘great.’
Lastly, unlike in years past, free-agent LHP Randy Wolf is open to signing with any team, not just teams on the West Coast, reports Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

Burnett reached out to Carl Pavano to get his take on playing for the Yankees.
Burnett should have asked somebody who actually played for the Yankees.
Why don’t the Mets see if they can get something out of this Peavy deal. Even as a third team, they might make out well because Chicago and SD seem desperate to get this deal done..
@TheWizard7
The article said they are looking for a third team to help “facilitate sending Jake Peavy to Chicago”, not destroying the deal completely.
cant wait to see the eventual deals/signings that happen. Most of which will never have been reported in all these rumor posts!
Hm… Tribune is filing for bankruptcy. I wonder how and if that will affect the Cubs organization.
Why would we want to HELP the Cubs get Peavy? LOL.
“Burnett should have asked somebody who actually played for the Yankees.”
Aaahahahaha
Considering Burnett will most likely be on the Pavano plan, who would be more appropriate?
Why won’t the Mets consider Burnett? This is a big market team that should be able to bully/block the hated (and supposedly) smaller market Braves).
Cause the Mets are Smart enough not to invest their $$$ into Pavano Pt. 2
burnett called pavano about the yanks then called umpire john hirschbeck about roberto alomar.
As ridiculous as I think mistermet can be I do have to say I’m starting to agree. We seem to be being way to cautious with money for some reason. Especially when some of the deals they could make they’d have to overpay for now would end up being more cost efficient in the long-run. It doesn’t make sense to me that we basically seem to be in on none of the upper tier pitchers despite having two big holes in the rotation.
Nevermind seeming to have no interest in Dunn of Tex despite the fact they’ll fill a major long-term hole. Unless they plan on going hard after Bay or Holliday, who I think will be less worth what they end up signing for than Dunn or Tex, what exactly is their post Delgado plan for the middle of the line-up?
If I’m not mistaken, The Cubs owners are trying to sell the team.Mark Cuban was one of many pursuers.
This is what the mets should do. it would cover everything except the bull pen.
step 1) sign CC
step 2) Trade CC to the yankees for Joba, CAno, and Nady.
Step 3) If cant get step 2) try for Marte, Cano, Nady, Hughes.
Perfect strategy the yankees seem like they’ll do anything for these guys. and its like picking them up for only there contract
Luis Castillo, cash and Low-Ball prospect to Orioles for Ramon Hernandez.
Castillo has $18 million left.
Hernandez has $9 million left, which can reach $16.5 pending the club option in 2009.
this* guy*
I don’t think the mets are looking at the “Upper Tier” starting pitchers, because they aren’t all that good. Outside Sabbathia I really don’t want Lowe or Burnett. I think Burnett is the only one worth the reported money because he can be an “Ace” if he stays healthy. Lowe isn’t anything more then a reliable #3, yet he’s going to be making 15+ million a year.
The Mets are smart to stay out of that.
Gina I am with you on Dunn and Tex though. I don’t even like Delgado and wouldn’t mind the post-delgado team starting this season!
gina, agreed that the plan (or what little we can surmise, since none of it has actually been executed!) seems odd.
If they are really constrained by budget, and bargain shopping, don’t expect much other than a closer and some spare parts.
I hope it is just biding time, waiting for the market to develop. Then if you get good deals, more money left later. Until the real good (and worth the $$) parts get snapped up, no biggee.
now, what I really hope it, Omar is trying to get the key stuff nailed down frugally enough that he can be a player for one of the (late signing) big names. Like Tex of course!
IMO, they do of course need a couple of SPs, but it is not a deperate situation that they land someone like CC. Just a couple of good quality guys.
And also IMO, the only real stud is CC. Beyond that, you have talented but injury prone, and old and overrated, and mr. erratic (sheets/burnett, Lowe and Perez in that order!)
And a bunch of overpriced mediocrity like Garland.
So, if CC isn’t in the cards, and Lowe is really getting a ridiculous contract, get some ST parts (sheets/wolf/etc.) and fill in the gaps, and invest yor budget $$ in value stocks (like Tex).
hey, no one will complain if Omar manages his allowance real good, and is the one at the end with the money to pay the last stud!
tjones: Why would the Orioles want Luis Castillo? And why would the Orioles, seeking payroll relief, take on $9M more in payroll to get a worse player?
It’s seems SantanaClause has been drinking so volka filled eggnog. For The Mets to sign CC, they would have to outbid The Yanks, which will never happen. But for the sake of argument, let say The Mets sign CC…Why would they trade him after signing him? And why in hell would the Yankees trade Joba,Hughes(who they refused to give up for johan),and Cano for him? Step 3 was equally as dumb as step to so I won’t get into it.It’s two thirty in the afternoon, but I’m about to take a shot of patron in toast to you…Here’s hoping you sober up.
mark, I agree that they will be better off starting the post-delgado era now. he has to have some value. I just see a crappy year out of him.
Meaning, pay him lots of $$ for no production again! Just like 2007.
I don’t know if Delgado will be crappy but I don’t think he’ll come near his second half numbers. I think he’ll be around what his final season numbers were, maybe slightly worse. Which will be good but I don’t know if it will be good enough if we don’t upgrade anywhere else.
The Mets should stay as far away from Dunn as humanly possible. He’s can’t hit anywhere higher then 6th, because of his low batting average and lack of clutch hitting. If you think to bat him second because of his high on base percentage, you will have to come to turns with his non-existing speed and his poor base running.Defensively, he’s a crap outfielder and mediocre first baseman at his best.I would bet the farm, all those screaming for Dunn now, will be yelling and booing him before his contract runs out…Just Say No!!!!
Now is the time to get Tex- there will not be a big player of his calibre on the market for a long, long time, if ever- and we’ll need a 1B in one year (maximum)…but personally I’d rather get rid of Delgado now.
Bullpenhelp: The Orioles reportedly want to exchange contracts with a team willing to give up an infielder.
