The Dodgers and Mark Loretta have agreed on a one-year, $1.4 million contract, according to MLB.com.

…if loretta got one year, and everett got one year, i am not sure Nick Punto will get more than one year, though he’s certainly trying…apparently, according to eyewitnesses, punto is not hard to find in the Bellagio…

The Twins are not interested in Astros SS Miguel Tejada, but the Indians are, explains MLB Trade Rumors.

Jason Giambi expects to sign a contract with the A’s, bringing him back to Oakland, writes Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

The Marlins may make look to sign Pudge Rodriguez, reports Mike Berardino on his blog for the Sun Sentinel.

The Tigers could end up trading OF-1B Marcus Thames, in an effort to save money, reports the Detroit Free Press.

In a post to Yahoo!, Gordon Edes surveys a group of team officials who believe the Red Sox will end up with Mark Teixeira.

The Braves and Cardinals have discussed a deal that would send OF Rick Ankiel to Atlanta, according to FoxSports.com.

Why the Red Sox? The Mets have to have at least as much money as them for a FA, and actaully need Tex a lot worse.

Can’t just look at 2009 and what you hope Delgado gives you. Think about building a sustained winning program (like, say, the Red Sox do?).

This is a FA signing, not a trade, so it isn’t an issue of the Sox having better prospects.

I also would have liked Loretta as a bench guy. Punto for 1 year could work too (gives flexibility, if not a great bat).

Agree Stickguy, that contract for Tex will not kill either team financially. It makes no sense to me at all. It’s an extra 8 million this season. Imagine if you can trade Delgado for that young #5 starter and they are under cheap contract for 3 more years.
That’s like getting a 24 million dollar player for 2 million.
    Thus a 8/160 contract turns into a 8/126. 15.75 million a year for Tex? A bargain.

  3. stickguy says:

yup. Tex + E. Jacksson (or sonnanstine, or someone like that) will be cheaper than Delgado + Garland in 2009. And way better.

and in 2010+, the better part grows!

I have come to grips with the fact that we will not be going after Tex but I was really hoping we’d make a run at Sheets.

Loretta got one year because he’s 37, Punto just turned 31. Big difference.

Rick Ankiel going to the Braves will be debunked, it makes absolutely no sense.

Also, Pettite would never oplay for the Red Sox. No way, no how. He has already confided to many, that it’s the Yankees or bust. He didn’t even feel comfortable going to LA to be with Torre. No way he goes to the Red Sox.

  7. I have a feeling Omar grabs Thames for LF.
