Misc. Buzz: Hernandez Traded, Furcal, Frenchie
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 9, 2008 6:12 pm

“The Reds have reached preliminary agreement with the Orioles on a trade that will send C Ramon Hernandez to Cincinnati for OF Ryan Freel and two prospects,” reports Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.

Re-signing Rafael Furcal is now the Dodgers top priority, according to Tom Verducci of SI.com.  That said, MLB.com reports that the Blue Jays met with Furcal’s agent today.

Earlier today, the Boston Globe said the Royals and Braves were close to swapping Jeff Francoeur and Zack Grienke.

However, on Steve Phillips said at ESPN the rumor is false; as did Joe Hamrahi from Baseball Digest Daily; as did Royals GM Dayton Moore, according to MLB.com.

Matt; is Omar on a strictly pitching mission or will we see upgrades in LF, C, 2nd and perhaps 1st?
I know the rumor mill…what are your sources saying in Nev?

  2. phukthephills says:

    KRODS A MET!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Deaner says:

you hearing any buzz that the mets might get something else done at the meetings, matt?

  4. CaseStreet says:

I’m hopint that Omar will shore up the bullpen by the end of the meetings.

Then, since Tex wants to sign by X-mas, I hope Omar goes after him.

I think there’ll still be plenty of inexpensive SP and OF options come January.

  5. Mets17 says:

I say Omar is working on a Street deal as we speak. Just a guess

  6. buenosdiazfive says:

Y is everybody dogging Delgado…he freakin carried our team last year. Most of us were chanting MVP on this guy after a slow 2 months. If it hadn’t been for the meltdown of the bully, we would have one the division and he probably would have been the MVP. Give the guy a break!

On his back!! That’s where the team was most of the year, and you all want to leave him out to dry? Nice! Who was as clutch as him most of the year?

I’d rather focus on a strong R bat than worry about 1B…he’ll be fine.

  7. BiggieSmalls says:

Omar missed the Boat on Ramon Hernandez.

    Freel was straight awful.

  8. Maineiac says:

Franceour for Greinke is just unfair. The Royals would have been robbed.

  9. Maineiac says:

Wow I misspelled both their names.

  10. Kalihan42 says:

Probably Street or a comperable player that hasn’t been discussed much is the next target. My guess is that Minaya will speak to the agents for Ibanez and Garland before the end of the meetings but I doubt either will sign anywhere at the meeetings.

If I had to guess Minaya is trying hard to open up discussions to move Hielman, Castillo and one of our catchers (probably schnieder) but will not move any of them until well after the meetings…I could be wrong though…he did get burned waiting so long with all of his chips trying to figure out the Santana deal so maybe he will try to make some moves sooner rather than later.

  11. CaseStreet says:

buenosdiazfive, I don’t think anyone is dogging him, but he won’t be coming back next year, so the idea is to think long term now to find his replacement, especially since we control him this year for a very good price. We good certainly get something of value for him and replace his bat.

  12. Reyes es el Rey says:

Francoeur for Greinke is so ridiculous, I think Matt made everyone here dumber for having read that.

I agree the Mets were on Delgado’s back for July and August. Unfortunately, during April and May Delgado was standing over them with his spikes on their throat. I am tempering my expectations for Delgado.

    Welcome K-Rod!

  13. BklynMets69 says:

We need a straw to stir the drink, sign Manny for two years and an option.
He will take the pressure off the other hitters next September and hopefully October.

  14. kingman 26 says:

Yeah, it may be time for Manny. Tex would be the best of course, but if not the long-term for him, Manny in left would really be the last piece we need…..

  15. buenosdiazfive says:

CaseStreet, good point. I just really doubt we will sign the likes of Tex, who IMO is a bit overrated. I would rather investigate getting a Manram R bat and look to the farm for longterm 1B solutions (Carp?). Tho Delgado has trade value, how much? He is up in years and all of MLB knows that. Plus, with 1 year left, that’s a salary dump after this yr.

I wouldn’t underestimate his clubhouse presence and leadership which go past the numbers just like julio Franco.

I vote to keep him for one more good yr. Outside of signing Tex, which is a longshot and will break the bank, what else is there?

  16. buenosdiazfive says:

OK…so after looking over there stats and comparing Delgado and Tex….I’d have to eat my words a bit.

Tex is really a switch hitting reincarnation of Delgado. Honestly, he mashes like Delgado did in his youth with the Blue Jays. I’d take him….I just haven’t seen that guy in the heat of a pressure packed race like he would be in NY and something tells me he would under perform. It’s not like Texas, a depleted ATL, and LAA on cruise control presented any serious pennant race.

  17. CaseStreet says:

buenosdiazfive, I’ll give you clubhouse leadership, maybe (he might have been missing in the clubhouse at times)

break the bank, nope. If you click on my name, I’ve done 09’s 40 man payroll. If we get rid of some overpaid relievers and Delgado and then sign inexpensive SP and OF, then it won’t break the bank.

Overrated, maybe. But you can’t deny his stats, hits from both sides, gold glove and he’s only 28.

Right now, there are no long term solutions at 1B in the farm.

I was all in Manny love, but Tex just makes better LT and fiscal sense.

If not Tex, then Manny, Dunn or even Ibanez (don’t let Kingman know I said that)

  18. CaseStreet says:

buenosdiazfive, then look at his numbers in the post season. He’s worth it.

  19. kingman 26 says:

    Ha! Too late Case!!

My respect for you has been growing on a daily basis, and has hit another new high!

I do love Tex, I love Manny for 2–3 yrs if possible if no Tex, but otherwise, Raul will forgive you for sending him on the chilly Staten Island Ferry…..
