Outfield: Delmon Young, Ibanez, Manny, Bradley
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 9, 2008 12:50 pm

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com believes the Rays and Twins are discussing a deal that could send Delmon Young back to Tampa, with either Andy Sonnanstine or Edwin Jackson heading to Minnesota.

Last month, in a report for the New York Post, Joel Sherman said the Mets and Rays had been in talks regarding Sonnanstine and Jackson, since Tampa has shown interest in Aaron Heilman.

Speaking of outfielders…

“The Phillies, Mets and Cubs appear to have separated themselves from the pack of teams pursuing outfielder Raul Ibanez,” writes Jayson Stark at ESPN.com.

Stark also reports that Scott Boras met with the Dodgers yesterday to discuss bringing free-agent OF Manny Ramirez back to Los Angeles.  However, Stark says, ‘The Dodgers did not put their two-year, $45-million contract offer back on the table.’

the buzz in Vegas seems to be that boras has every intention of making manny the last player to sign a contract this off-season, in an effort to focus a market for his services

Accoridng to the Boston Globe, “Milton Bradley is in intense discussions with the Cubs.”

  1. lil pelf says:

    lets get ibanez!

  2. vic79 says:

meh I am not concerned about the TB starters

I think Heilman needs to be moved for a reliever……..same goes with Sanchez and Schoenweiss……….

With K-Rod looking to be in it would be SWEEEEET to get Street or even sign Fuentes still

If they sign Fuentes it is alot of cash BUT

    K-Rod
    Fuentes
    Smith
    Feliciano
    Kunz
    Stokes
    DEAL involving others

2B is interesting right now with the Young rumor………..but really who will take Castillo?

  3. kingman 26 says:

Yes, lil pelf, I thought I was the only one favoring that!! And if we do, we will have solved closer and LF with lots of dough to spend, which could very will mean a run at getting rid of Delgado and signing Tex!

Case, how about Tex AND Ibanez??

  4. dave27 says:

Ibanez is a great fit for this team aside from haded-ness. And he’s a NY guy who grew up a Mets fan, who is close with Beltran from their KC days.

We can’t let this guy end up in Philly.

Sure we’d be heavily left-handed, although with Wright, switch-hitters in Beltran and Reyes, and Castro in vs. lefties I think we’re fine.

  5. vic79 says:

I think people do not want Ibanez because they feel Church and Murphy should be the lefty corner OF bats……….not sure how we can disagree with that since they are young

HOWEVER if a deal can be worked out for Young in Texas then you trade Church

names will be thrown around but F-Mart, Church, Parnell, Castillo would get it done I would think…………anywho think that is too much?

Then sign Ibanez for the conerner spot

  6. alex242 says:

wow, if we are involved with ibanez i will haunt down omar minaya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. CaseStreet says:

Sorry Kingman, Ibanez didn’t like the tour. I’m not sure why. I told him I was sorry for giving him bad directions and that he ended up in Staten Island. Couln’t have been that cold on the Ferry.

  8. eduardosmets says:

mets need to stop horsing around and trade for andy sonnastine trade nick evans aaron heilman and felicano asap for him

    sign oliver perez

trade niese kunz and carp in that 4 team trade with the cubs for mark derosa

this would give us 4 5 starters and a 2nd baseman and outfielder in derosa who can hit n he only makes like 5 mill so betwen him and perez and the trades we will onli spend 15 mill on top of the 12 mill for k rod thats like 27 mill and the rest can go to siging cordero or convincing hoffman to setup for us and maybe sign a guy like will ohman

  9. nostradamus says:

ibanez is a lefty aarp member schlub that would help the mets lock down second place. forget those other schlubs like dye as well. MANNY IS THE ANSWER.

  10. zen says:

    ibanez will be a met….

…in two years when he’s 38 years old.

  11. therealsince86 says:

Why would you not be interested in TB’s starters? We have 2 holes in the rotation and there are not many names out there to fill them. There are plenty of BP names. If Heilman HAS to go in one or the other then get creative in the other. Trade Schnieder to the RSox for a prospect to be used in the other trade.
Sonnanstine is a young cheap innings eater. Think what that allows you to do money wise. You just saved the 10 million a year you would have paid Garland. Not to mention the 5 million you were wasting on Schnieder.

  12. therealsince86 says:

LOL, you make fun of Dye and Ibanez age and suggest getting Manny? Come on.

  13. zen says:

manny is not a man. he is a machine.

  14. eduardosmets says:

i know theres not many sp that we can afford out there but really wats wrong with getting andy sonnastine hes an upgrade for a 5th starter way better than niese niese isnt ready im sorry and oliver is a big game pitcher and with a good bullpen will make him better he might b wild but he gets it done wen we need him thats the rotation done right there and giving up heilman BUM feliciano BUM neise BUM kunz BUM carp maybe can be something but in the AL only so BUM we get to keep all our top prospects the only thing i agree is trade schnieder to the redsox for bullpen help and sign sum else i like robinson cancel better than castro and sign sum1 small like rodriguez or sum else
maybe we dont have to go with the derosa idea but signing andy and oliver i feel like hsould be done and upgrade the bullpen i just dont want the phillies to get derosa plus he plays 2nd and outfield and if were stuck with castillo i want a back up feel me cant jus have castillo and no back up ill go crazy all seaosn long

  15. CaseStreet says:

Plus, Ibanez will cost too much. You know me, I’m all for spending little on corner OF, 2B, and C.

Say hello to my little friend, Juan Rivera. Yup, righty w/ plus power and defense. And leaves money for Tex.

  16. alex242 says:

    trs:

how can you connect DYE and that bum ibanez in the same sentence with MANUEL RAMIREZ!!??? don’t make me lose the respect i have for you by insulting that man like that!!

  17. lil pelf says:

manny, two years 50 mil, worth every penny to have that bat in our line, changes everything, makes the line three times better, and i don’t buy the concern over his clubhouse presence, the man has two world series rings.

  18. NickA33 says:

I love the idea of signing Manny to a two or three year contract, if he’ll bite. Place him in LF, where Beltran can make up for Manny’s lax D. In later innings we can sub him out for a defensive replacement.

His bat is straiight up nasty and guarentees us 30+ HRs for the next 3 years. Manny on our team helps everyone in the line up, without a doubt. He makes sense for our team, if Omar is looking for more offense.

  19. therealsince86 says:

I never said they were as good of a hitter. But saying you don’t want them because they are old but do want Manny makes no sense. If you want to say I don’t want them because they aren’t as good a hitters then so be it.

  20. alex242 says:

    trs:

got you.. i do not for the life of me wanna see ibanez here.. please no at all cost..

  21. stickguy says:

manny for 2 years I can see happening.

The rest of these stiffs? nah.

I say trade all the farts and waste, and just start clean (keeping the core).

Unload Delgado, castillo, castro, schneider, heilmann, feliciano, whichever (or all) that you can, and try to bring in either top talent or good young players to replace them.

They are all complimentary players, and either need to go (luis) or are on the last year of their contract.

Try to get replacements now and make the team better. Instead of 1 more year of medioctiry or old age, and having to replace them (with nothing to trade) next year.

  22. zen says:

i’m fine with any of them (dye, manny, ibanez) for 1 year. 2 years max. as long as the mets sign k-rod, bring street in, and sign 2 quality starters who regularly pitch into the 7th inning.

  23. vic79 says:

I wonder if Texas would take Delgado
(among others) in a deal for Young with the mets going for a BIG SPLASH with Texeira as well

a pipe dream I know but I am willing to put whoever in the corner OF spots to have a IF of Wright, Reyes, Young, Texeira……….good god

  24. Elastic says:

We need a right handed power bat.

Manny, Burrell, Dye & Tex fill that need.

  25. NickA33 says:

I’m not opposed to unloading Castillo, Schneider or Heilman but the rest you need to keep.

Delgado has one year left on his contract and he’s in good health. He is the sole reason we were even in the running at the end of the season, so he warrents a return. I’m not saying he’ll repeat those numbers but he’ll hit well and play out the rest of his contract.

Feliciano is tradeable but he’s a solid lefty set up man, we need that. So, unless we’ve got two others coming in, he’d have to stay.

But, any of our current Catchers and Heilman can go.. IMO.

  26. rogasm says:

Anyone against bringing Alou back on a one year 1MM deal? Essentially being the new Julio Franco…

  27. stickguy says:

nick, also a big reason they were so far behind in July!

  28. kingman 26 says:

    rogasm–that is a joke, right?

We can NOT sign Alou, and it would almost be the same as having him on the team for the most part…..

  29. NickA33 says:

stick – true, I won’t dispute that! But, my whole point is that, keeping Delgado for his last year of his contract couldn’t hurt. It doesn’t make any sense to consider trading him, unless you plan on signing a guy like Tex…which we know we’re not.

  30. MeetTheMatts.com says:

Matt: Great job on this site – CONGRATS!
Vic79: We are with you on Tex and Young. Omar has done something BIG each off-season; we expect this year to be no different. Where’s Manny???

  31. bucknersankles says:

WE CAN ELIMINATE ALL DISCUSSION ABOUT WHO IS GOING AFTER WHO IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST, AND HOW DOES THAT AFFECT US ETC BY SIGNING THE ONE MAN THAT WILL TURN OUR LINEUP INTO A JUGGERNAUT….. MANNY RAMIREZ.
NATIONAL LEAGUE PITCHER’S WILL BE ON THEIR HEELS FROM THE 1ST INNING,HIS NUMBER’S AND CONSISTENCY ARE ABSOLUTELY SICK, HIS ABILITY TO HIT IN THE CLUTCH AND GET ON BASE ARE WITHOUT PEER AND HE IS NOT SLOWING DOWN.
DON’T BE FOOLED BY THE ” HE’LL BE 37 ” CROWD THIS MAN IS THE GREATEST RBI MAN OF THIS GENERATION AND AS I’VE STATED BEFORE HE IS REGARDED BY MANY AS THE GREATEST RIGHT HANDED HITTER IN BASEBALL HISTORY, HIS NUMBERS ACROSS THE BOARD ARE ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING HANDS DOWN.
THE ENERGY HE’LL BRING TO OUR BALL CLUB WILL BE PHENOMENAL, THAT SAID, IT WON’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE ABOUT DYE GOING TO ATLANTA OR ANY OTHER SENARIO THAT MAY PLAY OUT BECAUSE WE WILL HAVE THE DOMINICAN MESSIAH AND A LINEUP FOR THE AGES.
