If many people here are worried about garbage at the end of the rotation, why is everyone wanting Garland. The guy has an ERA in the stratosphere and was lucky his team hit for him. Keep him away please. I'd rather start with Niese and Parnell and have them take their lumps early in the season and learn from it. Actually, Ollie, for all hs faults will be missed in big games, especially against Philly and Atlanta. If he is my number 5, I certainly have no complaints with that.

If this is true and they get K-Rod, they need to see if they can get Hoffman as a set-up guy. I think he is through being a day in and day out closer but he would be great as a set-up guy and insurance if K-Rod has issues. Of course that is if he is ok in his mind being a set-up guy. I would also bring Heilman into ST as a starter. At the very least, it could only bring his trade value up and may be a last stab at keeping him on the team. Change of job position may work as well as a change of scenery.

FreeAaronHeilman III,

Are you kidding? All we'd be doing is bringing back 95% of the same gutless team from last year. We had a top 4 closer at the beginning of the year in '07 and '08, and in '09 we're also going in with a top 4 closer now in K-Rod- so no change there. The offense needs to be upgraded, and 2 starting pitchers need to be obtained, along with overhauling the ENTIRE bullpen. Signing a closer and making a few tweaks here and there is not nearly enough.

You gotta realize that this is a business too. I'm sure they run all sorts of simulations and calculations to make sure these signings are worth their money. The New York Mets have a lot of money, but that doesn't mean that they should go out and sign Jason Giambi to 20 year deal like the Yankees. I would like to think that Omar is much smarter than the Yanks front office. If you think the Mets have so much money, why not sign CC and Tex too? and sign Lowe and Burnett too while at it. You just can't go out there and sign everyone just because you have money.

Don't get me wrong. I would love to see Cruz or Beimel seting up for KRod, but not at the price that they are asking now.

If you never sign middle relievers to multi year deals (2-3 YR deals), you'll end up scraping the bottom of the barrel for whatever crap you can find just to fill out a 25man roster. Like I mentioned, I would prefer we build our bullpen from prospects with Minor league contracts/options, but you need to sign solid arms as well. How is Heath Bell doing now? Chad Bradford?

IMO Beimel and Cruz have electric stuff, and have proven very valuable in their roles. I still think Heilman can be a good pitcher, just not in Queens.

Lastly, we are the New York Mets for God's sake. We don't need to operate like the Marlins. (Granted their front office does a pretty darn good job.)

Name me one mid-reliever that has gotten a long term deal (3+ years)?? There's a reason why they are not being signed to a long term deal. I would love to see Cruz or Beimel as a Met next year. But the truth is, unless they sign for 1-2 year deal for relatively cheap salary, they're not coming to the Mets.

The scenario could work in favor of the Mets if these guys don't get signed for awhile and will be desperate towards the end. But I don't see the Mets signing them for a long term deal

kistics:

if you sign them to a one year deal you might get one bad year...

sign them to a three year deal and you still might get one bad year.

signing them to longer deals is logical when the player is deserving and has a track record of success for a few years.

wadehead,

Demaso Marte?? He has not worked out all that well with the Yanks. Signing mid-reliever to a long term contract is a bad idea. Relievers come and go. You saw that with Heilman, Sanchez, Feliciano, and Schoe. All relievers will have couple good years under their belt and couple bad years too. They are the least consistent of all positions. Signing guys like Cruz or Beimel to a big contract would be a bad idea.
