The Mets are still working with the Rockies on a deal that could bring Huston Street to Queens, according to people connected to the team, as Omar Minaya works to find a set-up man for Francisco Rodriguez.
Though they have not have substantive talks in Vegas, the Rockies and Mets have been in talks for nearly a month, as the two sides continue to discuss Aaron Heilman.
Meanwhile, during his appearance on SNY’s Hot Stove show, SI.com’s Jon Heyman suggested the Mets could also show interest in free-agent Brandon Lyon and Juan Cruz, as well as Jon Rauch, who Minaya has expressed interest in before.
According to Heyman, Minaya would prefer not to trade prospects in his attempt to acquire a set-up man, and so he is more likely to deal in the free-agent market.
I believe the the Mets communicated to Trevor Hoffman the possibility of pitching in a set-up role, but he will first look to sign with another team, like the Angels or Indians, and be a closer.

hey if we can’t get street i’d be happy with either lyon or rauch aka the human wookie btw if we do get street and he relieves maine – we can call the duo maine street – get it?? lol
Lyon or Street is the way to go.
just got this from mltr
:09pm: Rosenthal says Mets officials met with Ibanez at a Bellagio restaurant today. He says the Angels, Phillies, Braves and Nationals are also in on Ibanez, though the Braves’ interest is mild
do u think this means we trade church for street or possibly some starting pitching?
Heilman and Feliciano for Street, that is what the Rockies want.
Juan Cruz is the way to go here. He’s a lights out set up man who would transform the Mets’ bullpen and remind fans of the Rivera/Wetteland Yankees. Sign him and we’re guaranteed to make the playoffs.
Rauch was awful last year.
so shoot for Lyon and GUardado. get a lefty and righty.
Street on top of that would be icing on the cake, but even if they don’t get him, the pen would be substantially fixed.
I would also look into Cordero on a make good type of contract (not sure what his health status is).
Even w/o street, K Rod, Lyon, Guardado is a respectable back 3.
Add in smith and 1 of schoe/Fleiciano (probably schoe, for contract issues) . 1 loogy, 1 roogy, and no more specialists!
then fill in the best of the cheap options. I like parnell sa a power arm/.long man type. Stokes, Sanchez, and any other arms brought to camp can also fight over the spots.
If you add street, he either replaces Lyons, or better, one of the scrubs fighting for the last spot!
no street, you have a closer, 2 former closers, and IMO a closer of the future (parnell).
How about Cruz and Street?
During the SNY broadcasts, Keith always had something interesting to talk about Rauch
Street and Lyon are the two best options here. Lyon is just as good is Cruz IMO, and Cruz is an A, while Lyon is a B. Rauch? Please. Other people to look at are Will Ohman, Cordero, and Dennys Reyes.
We’ll still get a first round pick if Ollie leaves, so I’m not worried about Cruz being a Type A. Go get him Omar!
I still think Lyon or Street is a better deal for the same production.
cruz wants closer money and years. Wonder if anyone will give it to him? Plus he is another type A (does that even matter anymore?)
also, why trade Church? you still end up needing another OF, and RF is harder to play than LF. You want to just toss murphy/tatis/evans into RF?
Keep church and put the 10 million a year you save over over ibanez into something more needed. like SP or Tex.
Sign Rivera as a platoon partner. Him + Church wil likely give the same offensive output of Ibanez, for less money and way better D.
Street is fine with me. Not a huge Rausch fan. Don’t know a ton about Cruz but at this point, can he be any worse then Heilman or Schoenweis? The Mets need crossover pitchers. I am sick of this bring Smith in for Righties, Feliciano in for lefties and then boom, we have no pen left.
Lyon or Street would be great, but I’d take Rauch as well. I know he was a bit of last year, but he’ll rebound. Speaking of one-time Nats, Chad Cordero would be great as well. I’m not sold on Juan Cruz…
And what is this fascination with Raul Ibanez? I don’t see him being a great fit here. He’d be fine, but then what do we do with Murphy, Tatis, Chavez and the seeming glut of outfielders on the roster?
Trevor Hoffman as a set up man isn’t a bad backup plan…
Street or Jensen Lewis would be the best setup options. If the Indians sign Wood they will move Lewis. To complete the pen, the best options would be Lyon, Ohman, Beimel, or a trade for Rauch. It would be nice to have a lefty power arm. And Rauch filled in nicely as the closer when Cordero went down. We cant go for any more type A’s here and the best options actually are B’s or through trade.
No Ibanez. Church has more upside and overall game. He hits the ball hard almost every time and plays great D. After the bullpen overhaul, we need 2 starters, who should both be acquired by trade (free agent options are not worth the money). Murphy and Tatis are both offensive players who should do great in left and unless Castillo moves we’re stuck with him. Schneider could move but its unlikely. Jeff Baker would be a good option for 2nd if we could work out a deal for him and street.
@PeckWizzle, why would the Indians move Jensen Lewis? His $393,000 salary certainly won’t burden them. If they move someone upon signing Wood, my bet would be Rafael Betancourt.
Thats what I thought, but I read the Indians would move him in an article. Doesn’t make the most sense, but I would love to have him. Maybe they don’t feel he has the talent Betancourt does? That sounds unlikely….you know, that rumor makes absolutely no sense. thanks for pointing that out.
No more overpaid relievers. Trade for street and sign Cordero. Everyone else should be not be FA. What’s the point in overpaying these FA relievers when rookie and arbitration level relievers can be just as crappy only cheaper.
I would probably sign Cordero and Ohman and trade for Street. Then, keep a spot for Smith, and let the two remaining spots come from Sanchez, Stokes, Parnell, Kunz (who’s probably not ready), and one of Show/Feliciano (trade the other).
That, my friends, is a shut down pen.
I’m not sure what the Indians’ LOOGY situation is, but maybe if the Mets are unable to complete the rumored Heilman & Feliciano for Street deal, they could send Schoeneweis’ one overpaid remaining year to the Indians for Betancourt’s two overpaid remaining years.
By the way I love how Cot’s contracts already has Francisco Rodriguez listed as a Met, it looks GOOD!
Why was Rauch bad last year? Injury? Circumstances? I liked him the year before.
Omar likes to accumulate guys who are coming off bad years because he can get talented players on the cheap.
Look at the Phillies as an example of how a team builds a good (great?) bullpen.
They took chances on JD Durbin (who previously was a nobody); JC Romera (who the Red Sox simply waived); and Brad Lidge (who was persona non grata in Houston because of his alleged fragile psyche and diminished skill). And they stuck it out with Ryan Madson after a few mediocre years.
Slider, does Heilman qualify as a talented guy coming off a bad year? If so, one down…
I say trade for Street… Feliciano and Heilman (add Evans if you need to since Omar backed out before, Rox might ask for more now)
Then with the money that we theoretically saved on the K-Rod deal, use it to sign Cruz….
Then if Omar wants to go crazy, see how interested Cordero is on coming to NY…
K-Rod
Street
Cruz
Parnell
Smith
Shoe
Stokes
Possibly Cordero….
Not to shabby
