This morning on ESPN’s Mike and Mike in the Morning, Buster Olney said he believes A.J. Burnett will sign a contract this week.
Yesterday, ESPN’s Peter Gammons said talks between the Braves and Burnett are progressing well.
However, according to Jon Heyman at SI.com, ‘The Yankees are prepared to top Atlanta’s reported $60 million, four-year offer to Burnett.’
Meanwhile, according to Olney, only the Yankees and Brewers have made an offer to CC Sabathia, i.e., the Dodgers, Giants and Angels have not.
Also, Olney believes Padres GM Kevin Towers is bluffing when he says San Diego will keep Jake Peavy for Opening Day if he’s unable to trade him before the end of this week’s Winter Meetings.
Nevertheless, the Cubs need young starting pitchers from a third team to help acquire Peavy from the Padres, says Olney.
According to Ken Rosenthal, of FoxSports.com, the Phillies are working with the Cubs and Padres as the third team.
By the way, again, ESPN 2 will air a Baseball Tonight Winter Meetings Special today at 5 pm.

If Burnett is waiting for CC, he might wait too long and will be forced to take less than he could get now.
going to be a lot of guys this year it seems that wait too long and screw themselves out of a better deal.
Agents and GMs have to earn their money this year!
Burnett stay away from. Just go get Sheets.
Any word on Lowe, Matt?
Why would the Phillies want to help the Cubs get Peavy? Makes no sense.
I said the same thing yesterday about someone wanting the Mets to help. If we can’t have him then help send him to the AL or keep him with the Padres.
My question is, is it worth it to TRY and get in on Peavy?
Something like trade Schnieder to the Sox for a prospect of Padres choosing.
Fmart, Niese, Murphy, and Sox prospect?
If Peavey is willing to go to the Yankees its all about the money which the Mets have. If thats the case, the Mets ought to throw the money at him and offer San Diego F-Mart, Niese and Heilimann. I cant believe anyone would top that and the Mets would have the best rotation in all of MLB
It is true about the contact extension. If the Mets offered Peavy 6/120 then I am sure he would be persuaded to go to the Mets.
I really like the Peavy idea. I also thin that Sheets on a two year deal with an option for next year would also help. Get Haren next year as a free agent, along with Matt Holiday or Jason Bay.
Correction:
Sheets ona two year deal with an option for a third year.
By the way…………
Lowe looks like he is starting to fall right into place. If looks like the Yanks are going to get CC, and Lowe’s name has not been connected with the Yankees as of late. All we have to worry about is the Redsox.
Why are the Mets not going after a trade for Peavy?
He has been one of the best pitchers over the last few years.
