“Yankees GM Brian Cashman is meeting with CC Sabathia for the third consecutive day, this time in San Francisco,” reports Ken Davidoff in a report for Newsday.
According to Davidoff, “It is believed to be a good sign for the Yankees that Sabathia is seeing them for a third straight day.”
During an appearance on WFAN, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said there are currently no teams from California in the bidding for Sabathia.
Heyman believes Mark Teixeira remains the Angels top target, and they will not target Sabathia.
Giants GM Brian Sabean told reporters that Sabathia is a ‘fall-back position,’ for the Giants, according to Mercury News.
…umm, how is a pitcher who will require a six-year, $140 million deal a fall-back…unless, of course, sabean is investing that money in a time machine, which he will use to bring back Christy Mathewson…then, i understand what he means…

I agree, Matt, “fall back?” From what?
Also, I LOVE the image you included with this post. It seems from afar that Cashman’s whole plan for 2 years has been to get Sabathia. If he fails to do so…
Yankees are pathetic.
the giants have good enough starting pitchers…they should just invest most of that money into manny and ibanez or something and maybe sign a garland…if we’re talking giants here
I have a feeling that if Brian Sabean had a time machine the first thing he would do is not sign Barry Zito, then bring back Christy Mathewson
Sabean said the money he has for free agents is earmarked for hitting. If he can’t get hitting, then the fallback is more pitching (Sabathia).
Cashman will be singing outside the hotel ” Baby Come back… you can blame it all on me”
im watching the encore of DNL, did i just hear correctly that the Mets are looking to reduce their payroll restricting them from picking up anyone else such as sheets or Ibanez???
On your knees & open wide.
I can picture Cashman in the stereo scene from Say Anything as John Cusack, haha.
@sepmets Thanks, I should’ve been able to figure that out myself. I’ll just be standing over in the corner facing the wall with my gum on my nose for a bit.
Two Things:
1. Love the picture of the dog on his knees. I think every Mets fan sees the Yanks as the dogs they are.
2. Nice way to sprinkle in a Christie Mathewson reference. Gotta respect the old school.
Is Sabathia going to get a restraining order against Cashman… no means no!
By the way…..CC on the Yanks means more beer for us. It will be much more likely that we reel in Lowe if this were to happen.
The Yankees tracking down this guy every corner of the country as if they were asking a girl to prom. Very comical display by the Yankees.
Wow. This is almost sad.
Almost.
I think Sabean means CC is a fall-back in case the whole Zito thing doesn’t work out.
might CC be using the yankees to perhaps get more money out of a West coast team? – which seems to be where he wants to go!
If the Giants get him – what a sick staff they would have – to bad they would have no run support!
the yankees rotation will be terriblw sabathia
omar should throw out an offer. sabathia want to be in the nl.
Right now I think our best bet is to make a move with the Cubs. We take Marquis off their hands so they can make a deal for Peavy, we get rid of Castillo to them. We then take our money and invest it in Manny to be our left fielder, with Murphy shifting over to 2nd. If that falls through, we go after O-Dawg and keep Murph/Tatis in left.
To shore up the pitching, since signing Manny/Odawg will use up our second available type A signing, we should re-sign Ollie. Although undesirable, it makes the most sense for this team given the holes we have going into this offseason, plus, while erratic, he is a big game pitcher who can dominate games at times. Obviously we need to make the Heilman/Evans or Feliciano for Huston Street move, do whatever with the catcher position either Schneid or Pudge, sign Chad Cordero and I’d really like the way our team looks for next year.
Lineup: obviously the team looks different if we sign Odawg and not Manny, as Odawg won’t hit cleanup, but I’m just giving an idea of what our lineup will be
Reyes
Murphy
Wright
Manny
Beltran
Delgado
Church
Schneider
Rotation:
Santana
Pelfrey
Maine
Ollie
Niese
Pen
Stokes
Smith
Duaner
Schoe/Feliciano
Cordero
Street
K-Rod
look nice? It’s very doable. Get it done Omar,
No. I don’t think “O-dawg” is worth the effort.
Neither is relying on Niese in an “Ian kennedy” type role. He should be the 6th starter, as in, first guy to get a shot when one of the regulars goes down.
Our offense isn’t struggling that much that we need to invest in an aging Manny long term. Another bat that can play the outfield would be nice, and i want more Tatis type guys to be on the bench.
“will use up our second available type A signing’
what exactly does that mean? Why does everyone think there’s some sort of limit. I mean, I know there is a limit, but no one could ever possibly sign that many type A free agents in one offseason. It’s like 6 or something.
What will you do when you got no rotation
And nobody’s throwing heat at all?
You’ve been running and with no pitch support
You know, it’s just a starter role
C.C., you got me on my knees
C.C., I’m begging darling, please
C.C., darling, won’t you ease my worried mind?
I tried to give you arbitration
When your old team had let you down
Like a fool, I fell in agents trap
You turned my whole world upside down
C.C., you got me on my knees
C.C., I’m begging darling, please
C.C., darling, won’t you ease my worried mind?
Let’s make the best of the situation
Before I finally go to your house
Please don’t say “I hate New York”
And tell me you will sign my clause
C.C., you got me on my knees
C.C., I’m begging darling, please
C.C., darling, won’t you ease my worried mind?

Johan, Eric Clapton’s lawyers will be in touch.
Well now I know what to get Brian Cashman for Christmas, a hardcover edition of “He’s Just Not That Into You”
What happened to Pride and Pinstripes??
i dont see why omar woudnt trade heilman and feliciano for street and then use money to get manny then move murphy to 2nd…im starting to think i have a man crush on manny..or maybe its just i cant stand castillo at all and want him gone
Enterkrod, both are possible. I think everyone wants Castillo gone. But Manny isn’t the answer. Dunn would be so much cheaper, and is the next best option.
@ Darkstar. Because there IS some sort of limit. I quote:
“If there are between 15-38 Type A Free Agents, no team can sign more than two in one offseason.”
There are 20 Type A Free agents this offseason. The only exception to signing more than 2 is that some of the players were on your team the previous year. So in essence, you can only sign 2 type A free agents that weren’t on your team last year. Therefore, we cannot sign Sheets and Cruz as somebody was referencing before.
How has Brian Sabean kept that job for so long? He is such an overrated GM.
Being that we just signed K-Rod. However, we CAN sign Manny/Odawg (both are type A’s), K-Rod (who we already signed, and is a type A), and Ollie (who is a type A, but was on our team).
To address our teams issues, I feel we need some of these type A’s. I think we need a left fielder, whom will come from the Type A batch, and we’ll need another starter, who we can’t rely on from the Type B batch (Garland, Wolf, etc.), so re-upping with Ollie makes the most sense.
Also, with my thrown out scenario, I forgot that we would have Marquis, who we could throw in at the 5th spot if Niese isn’t ready for the Ian Kennedy experiment.
@domosnacks5
The following is from 2006 but I think it’s worthwhile nonetheless, especially the last paragraph (note that in ‘06 the “per club quota” was 8 players):
There is also a set of quotas governing how many Type A and B players one club may sign as free agents in one winter, with that number determined by the total number of Type A and B players who elect free agency in that offseason.
• If fewer than 14 Type A or B players elect free agency, no club may sign more than one such player.
• If 15-38 Type A or B players elect free agency, no club may sign more than two such players.
• If 39-62 Type A or B players elect free agency, no club may sign more than three such players.
• If 63 or more Type A or B players elect free agency, “the Club quotas shall be increased accordingly,” according to the basic agreement.
Since 93 Type A or B free agents filed for free agency this winter, the per-club quota this offseason is eight. However, each team may sign as many Type A or B free agents as it loses in any particular winter, even if those signings would put it over the quota for that winter. At this writing, only Baltimore has signed three such free agents (Baez, Bradford, and Jamie Walker, who was a Type B).
exactly, i’m right, you’re wrong, thank you to the last poster. It’s called reading comprehension buddy.
so the real question is, what is the total number of Type A & B free agents combined this offseason? That will lead us to the allowable quota (plus any that a team loses, in this case likely Oliver Perez).
Grave,
I was under the impression from what I read that Type A free agents only factor into the equation. Maybe I misread, which is highly probable.
If that’s the case, I’d still like to go after Manny and a starter, obviously an upgrade over Ollie would be nice, but I don’t know if it’s realistic/worthwhile to invest into the starters viewed more desirable than Ollie this offseason.
Based off what you wrote grave, the quota is eight. I think that that makes more sense than what I thought it was anyway. My bad darkstar.
In the end, I still think my ideas were right. Sign Manny or O-Dawg to play left or second, shift Murph accordingly. Do the Street and Cordero deals. Sign another pitcher, probably Ollie given the question marks/amount of money necessary to sign guys out there. In an ideal world, we’d get Lowe and Manny, trade Heilman and Evans/Felciano for Street, dump Castillo + $$$ in some kind of deal for Marquis so they can get Peavy, sign Chad Cordero. I think that would be a great team.
I’m not 100% sure about this despite my research, but anyway my unofficial count from MLBTR of both Type A & B free agents combined is 52, so if my math is correct that means the Mets can sign 3 total Type A & B free agents, plus one more if they lose Oliver Perez. Also they are free to sign as many of the “other” (non-Type A & B) free agents as they like.
brian cashman has an eye for pitching talent.
@domosnacks5
That quota of 8 was from 2006 based on the total that year of 93 Type A & B free agents. This year the total is 52, so the quota should be 3.
By the way I should attribute that article to it’s author, Keith Law of ESPN.
i realize that dunn would be the next best possible option..but with that said..if there was a headline on here that read…mets sign manny for two years or mets sign dunn for two years…which one would you prefer…i know dunn would come cheaper but i dont see dunn thriving in new york like manny would be able to…again dont get me wrong krod..i see what you are saying too..
Grave,
You’re right. We can sign 3, but Ollie does not count in that amount. Therefore we can sign 3 not including Ollie. Manny, KRod + a type B (Pudge?), plus Ollie. Works for me.
@ Darkstar.
We’re both kinda right, and both kinda wrong. The amount we can sign is apparently not as high as you thought, but not as low as I thought. Regardless, I hope we all agree that we make the best moves, hopefully Manny + a pitcher, and then make a few side moves to shore up the pen.
Only things that picture needs are a Yankees logo and a leash.
YANKEES ARE GETTING SABATHIA
NY Post has Cc a Yankee f this is true I would love to hear what Fatcessa has to say
CC is too heavy set to invest in long term
