Starting Pitcher: Mets plan to talk with Pedro
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 9, 2008 7:07 pm

According to Mets GM Omar Minaya, ‘The Mets are interested in retaining Pedro Martinez and plan to meet with his agent,’ reports Enrique Rojas on the blog for ESPN.com.

…from what i can gather, he is a last resort for the Mets, and will not become an option until later in the off-season…

…personally, i do not see a scenario in which he returns

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. not happening.

  2. shannon says:

    no disrespect to Pedro

  3. euchreking says:

I think Omar basically spreads the word he’s interested in every possible alternative so as not to give any specific target a bargaining advantage. Omar leaks he’s interested in everyone and anyone, it’s all sleight of hand.

  4. rockets212 says:

who else are we going to get? im ok with bringing pedro back

  5. Fiya Minaya says:

This is a disgrace if true. Hasn’t Minaya learned from his old man fetish mistakes yet??? Pedro basically fleeced the Mets out of $20+ million with his bum shoulder last time around. Unbelievable.

  6. Metfreak says:

PLEASE NO !!!! I rather give it to Neise

  7. mistermet5757 says:

If Pedro comes back to the mets rotation, then it is most likely a disappointing offseason.

  8. Airfeet says:

if they give Pedro a 1 year 3 million dollar contract whatever….then sign Lowe and Manny

  9. soundsoul31 says:

actually, if the Mets can get one of Garland or Lowe, and they want a guy to compete with Niese, then WHY NOT?

If you can get him with an incentive-laden one year deal with maybe and option, he isn’t much worse than a Freddy Garcia type.

I don’t think Pedro would do it though, considering he could get 2 years guaranteed from a team like the Pirates or Nationals or any other second tier team.

  10. seattle steve says:

If they sign him it better be incentive laced

  11. buenosdiazfive says:

Ditto…I like the incentive heavy contract here. If you can get 160+ innings for the guy @ around a 4 era at the back end of the rotation….like 4th spot, then why not? The intangibles are that he knows the system, and has alot of knowledge to help out a guy like Niese, and Pelfrey still. If he is on the cheap and gives us a discount, take him.

  12. Fiya Minaya says:

    5.61 ERA. ‘Nuff said.

  13. CaseStreet says:

Incentives baby. Can’t have enough SP. I think it’ll happen as long as he takes his pride out of the way. Pedro wants to retire in NY.

  14. rockets212 says:

go one year with an option for a second and give him the second year if he pitches more than just say 180 innings with an ERA under 4.50. And yes it better be very incentive laden

  15. CaseStreet says:

180 innings? this is pedro. most pitchers don’t reach 200. I’d be happy with 150.

  16. breadclock says:

Pedro should pay the Mets to play for them in 2009.

  17. rockets212 says:

thats why 180 innings is only the number to pick up his option year, other numbers like 100 K’s or 150 innings kicks in incentives

  18. Elastic says:

    Just say no to Pedro.

  19. CaseStreet says:

fair enough rocket man, although I don’t think you can base incentives on K’s

  20. rockets212 says:

im not signing him im just putting the idea out there

  21. Fiya Minaya says:

Can’t believe people want this guy back at anything other than a minor league spring training invite. He’s a waste of a 40 man roster spot otherwise.

  22. MrMetPoughkeepsie says:

If it wasn’t for Pedro the Mets would not have been able to bring in any of the players we have now. If he would be willing to re-sign for an incentive laden deal for a one year contract with a team option for the 2nd season, the Mets would be lucky to have. Remember all he was dealing with last season concerning his father help, and the zip to his fastball did return. He’s a better option than giving big money to Garland or trading for Marquis.

  23. dave27 says:

Did anyone notice Pedro’s arm had more life in it than it had in years? Did anyone notice he missed most of 1 1/2 years and no one could do that and not losesignificant command? Did anyone notice his head was not totally in it all year given the frustrations over his injuries and mourning his father?

I’m not saying anyone should expect vintage Pedro, but I would not be surprised to see Pedro post 12 or so wins with an ERA in the high 3’s next year. For a reasonable, incentive-laden, short-term deal you could do far less.

  24. cver says:

    Ugh!

  25. PeterDragon says:

I don’t understand the outright hate.
It would be all about the deal.
Bringing in Pedro at a minimal contract to compete for 5th spot? what is the harm?

I’m not thrilled with Garland- why not take a flyer on a Pedro or Brad Penny for 5th guy competition?

  26. oleosmirf says:

i for one would love to see Pedro as the #5 starter. Lets be real we’re not getting a top pitcher and a guy like Garland/ Wolf so if the mets could get a solid bullpen, bring in a 2B/LF and sign Lowe or Sheets then Pedro would be a great #5 starter.

Is Pedro really much worse than Marquis or Livan Hernandez???

The upside is there and yes its a risk but if Pedro can pitch like he did at his best last season then thats great production from the 5 spot

  27. steadyeddie says:

    Say it ain’t so, Omar.
Time to turn the page, baby….

  28. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Nick Evans and Eddie Kunz. You heard it from me.

  29. cver says:

Hey Peter. How are you, man?!!! K-ROD – woohoo! May he close and be well! I’m logged in in the bleachers now, along with some others, if you or any others want to drop by. I just think Pedro is too old and hurt and we’re supposed to be moving away from that. If he was signed, he’d be given the respect that he deserves, due to his past, but that is way too much latitude for a guy who might not be able to deliver too many goods in 09. Also, I don’t think he would be that cheap. As a matter of fact, I think there might be some rules in the collective bargaining agreement that forbid players taking a significant paycut, if they stay with the same team (maybe only 30 or 40 percent). I could be wrong about that, but I seem to have read that somewhere years ago.

  30. Bacci says:

Yes! I for one would LOVE to see Pedro back.

I was at the game when he said goodbye to the crowd and i couldn’t help but feel that it was too soon… he still has a lot in the tank and I think he’s actually far from done. Time will tell.

  31. Fiya Minaya says:

“If it wasn’t for Pedro the Mets would not have been able to bring in any of the players we have now. ”

I love this argument- eating up the Mets PR department company line hook, line and sinker. As for those “players we have now”, what have they gotten us? One playoff appearance in 4 years? Not acceptable in my mind.

  32. kingman 26 says:

I am partly with you on this one Fiya…what you have in quotes is indeed utter nonsense…Beltran came here because we offered the most dough by far, as did Wagner, as did Santana, and KRod clearly wanted to pitch for us….it is mythology and bogus mythology.

I say if we want an aging imnury-prone guy, get Randy Johnson, who can still pitch. Pedro was done at the end of 2005.

  33. illish79 says:

With so much time missed and major surgery what was everyone expecting last year? You had to expect that even if hes 25 yrs old, I’d love to see pedro back maybe go year to year but to shot him down is disrespectful. He worked till he got hurt rather worked while he was hurt and made it worse. I dont want to hear thats what hes paid to do either cause not everyone does that. Also expect him to miss some time, everyone does, and this is when you bring in your young guys(niese, parnell)whomever. Hed be great to bring back no matter at what cost as long as we can afford it

  34. Starr247 says:

Every one of the haters needs to remember that we are talking about Pedro taking the #5 slot provided he can show a) he’s healthy in spring training and b) has his command back.

Since this is not fantasy baseball, you know the best we can hope for is a Randy Wolf type for that spot (who I think is vastly overrated). Garland or Lowe, if signed, would slot into the #4 spot vacated by Ollie (another subject for later-I am betting he will return). And forget the pipe dream about the Mets just signing a pair of starters like Lowe AND Garland. The best they could do is one of them.

If Pedro truly wants to finish his career out in New York, I say give him a 1 year contract with a 1 year option, heavy on incentives. This way, if he attains them, everybody will be happy. If not, we will not have lost a truckload of money for an overrated and never-was pitcher.

Remember, at the end of 2007, Pedro came back and was effective. If he can regain that form and put up numbers like 150IP, a 3.80 ERA with a lower walk count than last year, he would make a very decent #5 starter.

  35. metsfan1 says:

Just say no. One of the reasons our bullpen was so bad last year was having a starter like Pedro go 5 innings. You can’t keep putting the bullpen in night after night for 3-4 innings of work. Haven’t we learned our lesson. He won’t be healthy. He isn’t reliable. Time to go Pedro.

  36. TheWizard7 says:

I think Pedro has leadership attributes that count for something. As long as Pedro is their #5 with Niese as a fallback for the inevtiable DL stints, with an improved bullpen, he can be great.

  37. krod9 says:

Look. We’re basically going to acquire one or two starting pitchers. Hopefully two. Looking at who the Mets have been linked with, we see that:
    Free Agents:
    Lowe
    Ollie
    Garland
Wolfe (he said he would play for anyone)
    Pedro

    Trade:
    Marquis
    Sonnanstine
    Edwin Jackson
    Nate Robertson

We’d only get one of Ollie/Lowe, so at best we can hope for one of them. Then, we can get someone as our number 5. I would take every one of these guys before Pedro. We may even need two of the guys other than Lowe/Ollie, and I STILL would avoid Pedro. He’s just not reliable anymore, and the thing this team needs is reliability.

  38. cohen1333 says:

100% FOR bringing Pedro back. Pedro starts at the 5th man, keep Niese in the pen as the long man and when/if Pedro gets hurt, bump Niese into the rotation. I love having Pedro in our dugout, and after his tumultuous season, I would not be surprised to see him go elsewhere and win 14 games and post a 3.50 ERA. He still has it, I believe that. Remember how he pitched in those 5 starts immediately after returning from surgery in 07? 4-1. 2.50 era. He has what it takes. And I like the idea of him on our side:

    1. Santana
    2. Lowe/Perez/Sheets???
    3. Maine
    4. Big Pelf
    5. Pedro

    7th: Sanchez
    8th: Street
    CL: K-Rod

  39. oleosmirf says:

    cohen1333

thats the rotation i’m hoping for just with Sheets or Lowe instead of Ollie except with Pelf above Maine in the rotation

although i dont want to rely on Dauner as the 7th inning guy. i’d like Everyday Eddie, or Cordero in that spot and if Duaner returns to somewhat his old self then we have a great pen

  40. boozermetsfan says:

    BS! Bring Petey Back!

  41. NYMBosco says:

Pedro’s time as a Met is over! When it was Mike Piazza’s time to leave when his contract was up, Omar couldn’t wait to get Piazza out of town despite his status as a great Met star. Same goes for Pedro, thanks and goodbye! He is finished, now get lost. Omar better do the right thing here and stop it with the old washed up guys..enough……

couldn’t have said it any better. How many more chances are we going to give this guy. He is finished.

  43. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

I will go on record to say I love this idea.

There is no great #1 or #2 out there for the Mets, unless miraculously they get in and trade for Peavy, which would probably cost a butload of prospects including FMART.

Best we can do is get a solidt #3 (i.e. resign Ollie, though I prefer someone else despite his electric arm. Frankly he is too eratic for me).

The wild card would be Pedro as our #4. Because you know at worst he would be a #4, and more likely than not he could rise to a #3. And I would not be surprised for him to be the COMEBACK OF THE YEAR WINNER of 2009.

So to me, its a no-brainer. Sign Pedro. However, give him 7 million. With a 1 million bonues for 180, 190 and 200 inning plateus. He would only achieve that money if he pitched with length (i.e. more than 5+ inning outings).

I predict where ever Pedro goes he will achieve this. He is too proud warrior to comeback unless he could succeed.

And if Pedro thinks he can succeed, I want him at Citifield.
