I will go on record to say I love this idea.

There is no great #1 or #2 out there for the Mets, unless miraculously they get in and trade for Peavy, which would probably cost a butload of prospects including FMART.

Best we can do is get a solidt #3 (i.e. resign Ollie, though I prefer someone else despite his electric arm. Frankly he is too eratic for me).

The wild card would be Pedro as our #4. Because you know at worst he would be a #4, and more likely than not he could rise to a #3. And I would not be surprised for him to be the COMEBACK OF THE YEAR WINNER of 2009.

So to me, its a no-brainer. Sign Pedro. However, give him 7 million. With a 1 million bonues for 180, 190 and 200 inning plateus. He would only achieve that money if he pitched with length (i.e. more than 5+ inning outings).

I predict where ever Pedro goes he will achieve this. He is too proud warrior to comeback unless he could succeed.

And if Pedro thinks he can succeed, I want him at Citifield.

Just say no. One of the reasons our bullpen was so bad last year was having a starter like Pedro go 5 innings. You can’t keep putting the bullpen in night after night for 3-4 innings of work. Haven’t we learned our lesson. He won’t be healthy. He isn’t reliable. Time to go Pedro...

couldn't have said it any better. How many more chances are we going to give this guy. He is finished.

Pedro's time as a Met is over! When it was Mike Piazza's time to leave when his contract was up, Omar couldn't wait to get Piazza out of town despite his status as a great Met star. Same goes for Pedro, thanks and goodbye! He is finished, now get lost. Omar better do the right thing here and stop it with the old washed up guys..enough......

cohen1333

thats the rotation i'm hoping for just with Sheets or Lowe instead of Ollie except with Pelf above Maine in the rotation

although i dont want to rely on Dauner as the 7th inning guy. i'd like Everyday Eddie, or Cordero in that spot and if Duaner returns to somewhat his old self then we have a great pen

100% FOR bringing Pedro back. Pedro starts at the 5th man, keep Niese in the pen as the long man and when/if Pedro gets hurt, bump Niese into the rotation. I love having Pedro in our dugout, and after his tumultuous season, I would not be surprised to see him go elsewhere and win 14 games and post a 3.50 ERA. He still has it, I believe that. Remember how he pitched in those 5 starts immediately after returning from surgery in 07? 4-1. 2.50 era. He has what it takes. And I like the idea of him on our side:

1. Santana
2. Lowe/Perez/Sheets???
3. Maine
4. Big Pelf
5. Pedro

7th: Sanchez
8th: Street
CL: K-Rod

Look. We're basically going to acquire one or two starting pitchers. Hopefully two. Looking at who the Mets have been linked with, we see that:
Free Agents:
Lowe
Ollie
Garland
Wolfe (he said he would play for anyone)
Pedro

Trade:
Marquis
Sonnanstine
Edwin Jackson
Nate Robertson

We'd only get one of Ollie/Lowe, so at best we can hope for one of them. Then, we can get someone as our number 5. I would take every one of these guys before Pedro. We may even need two of the guys other than Lowe/Ollie, and I STILL would avoid Pedro. He's just not reliable anymore, and the thing this team needs is reliability.

I think Pedro has leadership attributes that count for something. As long as Pedro is their #5 with Niese as a fallback for the inevtiable DL stints, with an improved bullpen, he can be great.

Every one of the haters needs to remember that we are talking about Pedro taking the #5 slot provided he can show a) he's healthy in spring training and b) has his command back.

Since this is not fantasy baseball, you know the best we can hope for is a Randy Wolf type for that spot (who I think is vastly overrated). Garland or Lowe, if signed, would slot into the #4 spot vacated by Ollie (another subject for later-I am betting he will return). And forget the pipe dream about the Mets just signing a pair of starters like Lowe AND Garland. The best they could do is one of them.

If Pedro truly wants to finish his career out in New York, I say give him a 1 year contract with a 1 year option, heavy on incentives. This way, if he attains them, everybody will be happy. If not, we will not have lost a truckload of money for an overrated and never-was pitcher.

Remember, at the end of 2007, Pedro came back and was effective. If he can regain that form and put up numbers like 150IP, a 3.80 ERA with a lower walk count than last year, he would make a very decent #5 starter.
