Update, 9:10 AM:
Sabathia’s deal from the Yankees is now worth $160 million over seven years, according to Buster Olney of ESPN, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com and Jon Heyman of SI.com
‘Sabathia is still talking to the Yankees,’ said Olney on ESPN’s Mike and Mike in the Morning, adding, ‘They have not yet reached a preliminary agreement.’
Original, 7:07 AM:
“CC Sabathia is going to be a Yankee,” writes Joel Sherman in an exclusive report for the New York Post.
Sabathia agreed to a six-year, $140 contract last night, following three straight days of meetings with Yankees GM Brian Cashman, according to Sherman’s report.
This morning on ESPN’s Mike and Mike in the Morning, Sherman said, ‘the Yankees are trying to corner the market,’ as they have made the highest offer to A.J. Burnett, they have met with Scott Boras about Derek Lowe, and have been sent medical reports on Ben Sheets, who they met with in Vegas.
According to Sherman, the Yankees want a rotation with power arms, despite the injury risk associated with such a plan.
…why do you care…
Now that Sabathia has locked in with the Yankees, setting the off-season bar for pitchers, people in baseball expect players like Burnett, Lowe, Sheets and others to begin signing as well.

Uh oh. What will Franny have left to whine about?
Good for them, now how this affect the Mets?
Even the Yankee’s now are not going to turn around and pay Tex 8/150. The Mets should jump in. I actually think the RSox interest was pressure only. I may be mistaken. But even then with the Angels and Sox as the only other real candidates, why can’t we at least be a force?
Damn.
And as I typed that post, I just realized why. I am an Omar supporter, but he is scared. What if he goes after Tex full throttle and does not get him. Then you have a pouting Delgado left on your team and no upgrade. Forget being scared Omar, if Delgado wants to pout this year he will be costing himself his career.
I am fine with the Yankee’s signing CC. Who else did we want to sign him? The Angels? Well then the Yankee’s would have went hard after Burnett and Lowe. I would much rather have him in the AL than with the Giants or Brewers.
In more important news, the Rockies no longer need Feliciano. Is this good or bad news? Maybe now they turn to other areas of need and Heilman and a prospect can get Street.
what a great opportunity to go after tex and manny with the yankees out of the way! not to mention starting pitchers. this is great news!
starting pitchers under 300 pounds that is
” Yahoo’s Tim Brown talked to roughly half the teams in baseball, and could not identify a suitor for Manny aside from the Dodgers.”
Manny may get what he deserves right here. I hope the Dodgers sign Furcal and run out of money for Manny.
ill gladly take him if every other team shuts him out
It was said in the same article that the Angels don’t think it’s likely. This could bode well for the Mets.
Something like 3/60 with an option year. If he comes down to that price I would be interested.
If he is so interested in years and wants that 6 year contract then fine go 6/80. So he can’t play in years 4 you still got him at market value for the 1st 4 years.
K-Rod and MBM (Manny Being Manny)! Move over, Ringling Bros.!
ohhhhhhh CC, he will be miserable but on second thought how can you be with that money…………………he will now see if money makes you happy
but this is good, lets get a good starting pitcher………Yanks may be out on some guys now like Lowe and Sheets………….
CC took the money. His choice. If he opens his mouth to complain once about anything (not hitting say) throw rocks at him!
This off season does line up for Tex possibly getting shafted (at least from what he originally wanted). Omar should make a run.
manny is still looking very likely. Scares me a bit, but Omar seems to have a crush on him, so..
I think the money is better sepnt on Tex. Offer him the same deal that CC just got. Will he really do better than that? Throw in some option years to give the Mets some protection, and so he can claim the deal is worth more.
And TRS, if Delgado is going to pout in his walk year, they better trade him now! Actually, they should trade him now anyway.
haha feel bad for them not!!!!! 6-8 record and a 3.83 ERA in 18 starts this is wat they have to deal with C.C. made the biggest mistake i could of seen him with the dodgers. man there treat him like a slave poor yanks AL is gonna crush them badly
Oh, with Manny, wanna bet when the market falls apart, Cashman swoops in and snags him for a 2/60 deal? You heard it here first!
That would be fun first time they play in Boston.
I’m sure the Yanks will still try and sign another FA SP. 5/100 for AJ on top of this?
With any luck, in a year, they have 40+ million/year in SPs (just 2!) sitting on the DL.
Mets should still make a run at Sheets now.
Can we please stop with the Tex talk! There is no way the Mets sign him! If you read the paper today they do not want to increase there payroll and are fine with brining the same offense back. I think that is a HUGE mistake.
haha i forgot In two starts, he went 0–2 with a 10.45 ERA. in the post season haha
You get the feeling that K-Rod’s contract sent shivers down the spines of these pitchers. Suddenly a standing $140m offer looked pretty darn good, methinks.
To Bad…I really like C.C….Now I’ll have to learn to hate him like every other Skankee!!!
Please Santa All I want for Christmas is a setup man and Tex or Manny.
Merry Christmas (thats right Merry Christmas!)
I’m sure francessa will be on the air today talking about how great this signing is. I thought players only signed with the mets for offering the most money, and went to the yankees for the pride, history and pinstripes.
Haha I love how offended Yankee fans get if they think you’re mocking “the pride” and the “the honor” of being a Yankee.
i’m interested to hear about the exact parameters of the contract – what’s the base and what is incentive based. this is good for his family and the players union. good for him. back to the mets.
IMO, the Mets are going to be real sorry if they “stand pat” on offense. Too many holes getting covered up by a few stud players.
Also the reason they had problems late in the game sometimes, and tacking on runs (the 6-7-8-9 black hole)
I suppose if standing pat means the core guys, but they can/will/do upgrade the support ones (for a modest cost), that could work.
Replacing Castillo with any kind of offensive output? Good.
better catcher? Good
Sign Rivera to platoon in LF, tatis on bench? Good.
So, if they really do upgrade the pitching, and stand pat means another year of Delgado (but either C, LF or 2B gets improved), then the O shold be OK.
Of course, it shows no long term vision (like locking in Tex to the core to create a dynasty!), but take what you can get.
sabathia, wang, burnett, joba, pettitte
that is a great rotation….(even if burnett’s arm falls off)
hopefully if the red sox take lowe then Omar isnt afraid to sign Sheets b/c on a 1-3 year deal Sheets would be an amazing #2 pitcher.
sure Sheets has an injury risk but ill take 28 starts of Sheets over 32 starts of Garland/Wolf anyday of the week.
oh, for SP, Sheets is the best option. Wolf is probably #2. Either one will be a vast improvement over the drek they had at the back of the rotation last year.
And for #5, i expect it to become a compitition in ST, or a late trade. marquis is a possibility (way better than Garland), but if this was the track, I would put $10 on J. Vargas to get the spot.
If he is healthy, way better option than Neise right now. And the AFl seemed to show he was back.
Now trade delgado for sonnanstine and make a push for tex. If tex doesn’t work out sign dunn,Millar, and juan Rivera for the money you were gonna pay tex. Stick dunn in left for a year and have Millar and murphy platoon at first. Then next year you move dunn to first and make a push for holiday.
In case you were wondering if we could top the Yanks offer for Lowe and Sheets:
Yanks offered Sheets $26M/2yr
Yanks offered Lowe $65M/4
I would not go much higher on Lowe, but I think the Mets can definitely top the Sheets offer and not be worse off for it.
we really cant go into the season with the same 6 7 8 9 black hole, we wont win anything
Stick, I not sure Vargas’s performance translates into his ability to get major leaguers out. He was pitching against minor leaguers, good ones, but minor leaguers nonetheless. Vargas has been around for a while now, so I have a feeling his experience gave him a big upper hand against those kids in the AFL. I am a bit skeptical that he can pull that in the bigs.
Did they really just pay $3m more for a year less than we got Johan for? So sad.
I don’t think our 6 will be a black hole. I expect Church to be at least league average. Hopefully Omar will trade Schnieder to the Sox and then swing for Molina. That would really help the bottom of the order.
If the Sheets offer really is only 26/2 years, than the Mets need to top that.
if the yanks want tex, they can afford him. i don’t see how in the world buying cc puts them out of the running. the yanks are never out of the running when it comes to money, especially with a new stadium.
Yes the Yankees could afford him but I think they are going to concentrate on pitching. I think they would much rather add Lowe or Burnett to CC than worry with Tex. I just don’t see them following up the CC deal with an even larger one.
Vargas had success early (at least flashed potential) when rushed by the Marlins. he does have talent. My AFL reference was more to show he was hopefully healthy again. If so, a viable option. And only 24.
Sheets sounds good.
Church I agree can be big this year, if he stops banging his head into things.
Grabbing Molina for minor parts would be great. Fills my request for a bat upgrade at a weak postion. then just have to unload Castillo, and the order should be fine.
Rivera as a platoon guy? Like it. Trading delgado for a SP or decent prospect? Like it. Can esily fill in 1B for a year (all that CD is here for anyway) with decent options or young guys.
okay, with that logic, i agree.
I mentioned this last night and all jokes aside about how we hope he gets kidnapped or in a taxi accident, Castillo will be here and be our 2B. So in order to use Castillo effectively I suggest we bat him 9th.
Here are the reasons
1) Schnieder’s only plus is that he clears the pitcher with a decent OBP and can do a decent job of cleaning up with an occasional RBI. But batting 7th with Castillo behind him he serves no real purpose.
2) Castillo has a good OBP and is still a contact guy that does not SO often. You would gain the most production out of him in the 9 spot where he could get on base infront of Reyes. It would be like batting Castillo leadoff but limiting the amount of times he gets to bat in the game.
Reyes, Murphy, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Church, Schnieder/Castro, Pitcher, Castillo
is the same as
Castillo, Reyes, Murphy, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Church, Schnieder/Castro, Pitcher.
I don’t care if it’s stolen from another manager, the Brewers did it for much of the year last year and it worked.
Yes your pitchers spot gets more AB’s than normal, but that’s fine if you have a good bench.

Whole heartedly agree. Remember the ’80s, Yankee fans?
If Omar can get 2 SP, 1 setup man, 1 RP, and a pretty good bat the Mets “should” be vastly improved.
I used to be a big Vargas fan. He ate us up when the Marlins called him up. But after that it seems like the league caught on to him. I thought it was a good idea to trade for him. I still think he can come up and make an impact, but I am not convinced by his AFL performance.
THose are big IF’s
I expect one of the lower SP candidates, a trade for a lesser known to push Niese and Vargas, a trade for Street and a OF guy like Rivera or Thames and a new utility IF.
I think it’s like Stickguy said, we are not saying Vargas will be good because he is good in the AFL. We are saying he is a candidate because he is actually healthy.
trs
did u just have murphy batting 3rd?
Typical Yankees…The mets make headlines and then they go and one up us the next day. lol
WOW!! Remember that guy by the name of Randy something or other. The Yankees had to have him, so they got him. He came to town and punched a camera man on his first day and then stunk up the field and was driven out of town.
finish the trade for huston street, try quickly to sign either guardado or cordero, then start handing out offers to starters, then please let’s get to work!! get #25.. i heard this morning tampa was looking at giambi as a dh, he will cost as much as delgado if they get him, so why not offer him NOW instead of waiting then go all out at #25..
Sheets/Garland or Ollie/Pedro
i wonder who will spend more in the offseason, the mets on 5 of their pressing needs or the yankees on one player. any guesses?
pelf, I gotta go with the Yankees in this one.
funny, the guy had so many questions about new york when only 6years and 140 mil was on the table, but suddenly he gets a 7 year 160 mil offer and he’s excited about New York? Anybody want to take a guess as to what changed his mind because i JUST can’t put my finger on it.
You have to give it to the Yanks here. They only paid 40% more than the next highest bidder. That’s some restraint there Hanky.
I’m waiting for the idiots who think the Yankees are literally cutting a $140 million check to Sabathia.
People will compare Randy Johnson and CC, but only the mental aspect of NY could be compared in that regard. Randy was past his prime when he came here and battled injuries during his time. CC IS in his prime and is coming off a career year. On paper, CC should thrive, but he comes back to the AL and he started 2008 horrible.
Plus he has been horrible in the playoffs.
Curious what happens if he starts slow again in 2009.
did you guys hear about that jerry manuel might try luis castilo in the leadoff role to help him get better if we are to keep him becuase he kept stating as of this date meaning he’s hoping he doesnt even want him but if he does stay he might try him at leadoff which if he does stay wouldnt be the worst idea that would put reyes in teh second hole which would help him because david wright would be right after him and let him get some good pitches plus when castillo is healthy he gets on base but then again i hate castillo so enough giving him any type of credit
Wow, 7 years for 160 million? I thought the Yankees were changing philosophies?
Of course CC wants to pitch in NY.
wow seven years $160 million…I’m sure he’s glad Cashman followed him to San Fran.
7 years, 160 million for CC Sabathia, who doesn’t even want to be on the Yankees. I would like to take this time to be thankful we have Johan Santana.
Well when my only other offer on the table was 100 million and potential up to 120 million from another team eventually…I think 160 million sounds pretty good…even if I had to go pitch in Japan.
It’s going to be funny when three years into his contract he’s gained like 50 pounds, he’s not doing so well, and the NY media is ripping into him like a piñata at a little kids party.
Heyman reports the Yanks : “An agreement with Lowe is likely to be finalized in coming days, as well. The sides were discussing a contract for four years and about $66 million late Tuesday.”
I actually think Castillo 1, reyes 2 is better than reyes 1, castillo 2. Of course, Castillo 8/9 (if playing) is even better, and the best option is not on the field!
Reyes will liekly thrive if he doesn’t have to pretend to be a lead off hitter. Really, other than his SB ability 9which can certainly be utilized out of the 2 hole), what part of his game really screams “traditional lead off guy”?
not that Luis is s good lead off option, but if they had one, Reyes hitting 2nd could wreak all kinds of havoc. And really open things up for DW.
think he might like htting with 2nd and 3rd, with reyes on 2nd, all the time?
wow, if i have to put up with another year of watching this guy i’m gonna puke all over.. not only that but i’m sure they might walk intentionnally the pitcher to get to him.. please can we please release this guy??
somebody…
anybody…
So, the yanks will be paying almost 40 million a year just for these 2 guys? Lowe just ain’t that good, and it’s hard to imagine CC aging well, or taking his game to the next level.
lots of years for guys that likely have had their best years already (might get another 1-2 out of CC though).
anyway, let some other team give AJ 5 years (perfect fit for the Braves), although without the Yanks probably 4. Mets should snag Sheets ASAP while he is feeling left out. Or just grab Wolf.
Get one of those 2 guys, and concentrate on 2 set up arms (guardado/lyons/etc.) and the rest can easily be filled in over the next couple of months via trades or FA left overs.
Rivera for the RH OF platoon guy would be fine too!
the rockies just signed alan embree. the might not need a lefty now we can send heilmann and maybe evans to the rockies for street. and stickguy, i’ve said it all along, get sheets.. hopefully if we grab him and street the same week we can start the bidding war for #25..
LOL, the Yankees are really desperate. Groveling and money have gotten them their man. They will be paying CC nearly $23 mill/year + a 40% penalty each year for the foreseeable future. So they’ll shell out over $30 mill/year for him.
I think CC will pitch well for the next two years but weight and health issues will diminish his effectiveness by year 3 or 4. The Yankees will have $60 million tied up annually in two relatively unproductive players (A-Rod and CC) in 3-4 years.
Wonder what the Fat man has to say this afternoon on the radio.
I think Omar is gonna have to do what Matt keeps talking about…sign Garland to a reasonable contract (btw, Matt, I think you really over-rate him) put him as the #4 and then trade prospects for a John Maine-circa 2006 type (i.e. someone with a lot of talent but hasn’t put it together consistently, like Edwin Jackson or Daniel Cabrera)
In terms of relievers, if Heilman is not used in a SP trade, then good, lets go and get Street. If he is used, then free agency is the way to go and Juan Cruz may have to be signed.
Can we please now go make a shot for Mark Texieria? We could easily trade Delgado. Omar really has a chance to change the completion of this team this winter, and he should do all he can to do so.
For the guy that ask if I had Murphy batting 3rd, did you read my post? The lineup was with Castillo batting 9th thus being a 2nd leadoff man.
It would be the same as batting Castillo leadoff except you limit the number of times he gets to bat without limiting the amount of AB’s for your core. Thus when the pitcher got out it would be Castillo leading off the next inning with Reyes, Murphy, Wright due up.
Free Heilman, by my counts the Yankee’s are not over the luxury tax yet. Who knows if they will be or not. Chances are yes. But you just can’t mulitply CC’s contract by 40% LOL.
I’m sure Yankees fans are thrilled they’re getting CC into the Hall of Fame with a Yankee cap.
160 meeeellion dollars.
mlbtr says the Stanks are now looking to add lowe and burnett or sheets? Lets see, that would be over 70/millin or so a year for 3 FA SPs.
it’s a wonder there isn’t more talk about a salary cap! Since the luxury tax doesn’t seem to be an issue for the 1 team it was implemented for.
Oh, please stay away from Garland! If there is money in the budget for him, spend it on a position player, and get cheaper options (marquis, wolf, etc.) that are just as good. Or go a little higher and snag sheets.
I really want Omar remaking the team now, since this is the year. Players are available, other teams don’t have money, etc.
and, expect one SP to come via trade.
From what I heard on the radio, Heyman said that Yanks and Lowe are pretty close to coming to an agreement. Terms are something like 4/66-68. Also Yanks are trying to sign either Burnett or Sheets in addition to those two, most likely Sheets.
This sounds crazy. I really wonder the best Omar can to is Garland. I would hate to see Sheets going to Yanks and the Mets end up with Garland. He’s a #4 SP at best, they need a solid #2-3 SP. With Lowe, Burnett (Braves) and Sheets gone, there are no #2-3 SP out there.
At this point, do you guys think the Mets need more pitching or hitting? I’d say more pitching.
Rather see CC in the AL then the NL.
As far as the Yanks trying to sign Lowe. Again rather see him in the AL then in the NL unless it is pitching for the Mets. I don’t think the Yanks will get Lowe, Sheets, and AJ to go along with CC.
I don’t see Sheets or AJ going there. I think unless the Red Sox’s step up Lowe will be a Yank along with CC, and I don’t care one bit.
As much as I would like to see Sheets, what do you guys think of signing back Ollie and Pedro. Obviously it would be 1 year deal for Pedro.
I would rather see the Mets going out to get Sheets than Ollie, but signing Pedro for 1 year deal would be a good signing
Why does everyone mention TeX how is that possible? i understand i would love to see that its perfect we can use our 1B prospects in trades maybe but how ? man i hope i get a christmas surprise :) lol
I don’t like that the Yankees are getting CC, but I would love to see a Subway Series match between Santana and Sabathia!
I’d love to see the Yanks payroll hit an all time high.
who cares about the Yankees payroll. they have the money so they might as well spend it.
Sabathia, Wang, Lowe/Burnett/Sheets, Pettitte, Joba. that is an amazing rotation
