The Nationals are willing to give Mark Teixeira a 10–year deal, while the O’s are willing to give a nine-year deal, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The Braves have offered A.J. Burnett a five-year, $80 million contract, according to Gerry Fraley of FoxSports.com.

The Cardinals offered OF Rick Ankiel to the Mariners for closer J.J. Putz, according to Ken Rosenthal on FoxSports.com.

so, are we to assume the cost of putz for the Mets could have been, say, Ryan Church

The Blue Jays have shown interest in free-agent RHP Matt Clement, reports the Toronto Star.

The A’s continue to meet with free-agent SS Rafael Furcal, according to ESPN.com, despite the player rejecting a four-year deal earlier in the month.

If the cost were Church, do the deal now and pitch Putz in the 8th. You can easily replace Church with Ibanez.

  2. Hubie says:

I tend to agree. Sign Ibanez or Pat the Bat.

  3. nativeshout says:

why do the mets have no interest in matt clement? i see him as a low risk, high reward option if we can get him for fairly cheap contract. what type of contract do you think he is going to get?

  4. gipper82475 says:

Umm…Okay…that replaces Churchie in RF…who plays LF? We are desperate for a RH power bat in one corner OF position already and you guys wanna trade away our other corner OFer? Nuts. And, Putz would be miserable being demoted to the 8th.

  5. FSMetFan says:

everyone is completely overrating church…I wish other teams overrated him this much…all he is, is a replaceable outfielder…do you ppl truly believe hes gonna hit 330 like he did for one month last year…and then was awful when he came back later…hes somewhere in the middle which is replaceable…your dreaming if you think you can get putz for church alone…maybe church and heilman or parnell

  6. CitizenSnips says:

His defense is worth keeping him.

  7. WallyWhitehurst says:

Trade for Capps AND Street. Sign Garland, Wolf, Chad Cordero.

    Cut Castillo, Sign O-Dog

  8. gipper82475 says:

    FS,

Nobody is saying he isn’t replaceable….but why create a hole at BOTH corner OF positions? We are ALREADY having troubling filling the void in LF!

  9. gipper82475 says:

Wally, I like that plan though wonder if we can put the packages together for both Street and Capps. Plus, what are you doing for LF?

  10. twofours44 says:

Well, Putz has only been a closer for what, 1 and a half years max? he should take an 8th inning job (especially with a contender) but who knows these days. What I want to know is why havent Bedard rumors been swirling around? Isnt he somewhat on the block?

  11. WallyWhitehurst says:

Kunz/Parnell and Evans/Carp for Capps (just throwing out names here, not sure what Pittsburgh values him at, that could be too high)

    Heilman and Feliciano/Evans for Street

LF is Murphy/Tatis/F-Mart when he’s ready mid-09 with O-Dog at second

  12. GravediggerHebner says:

    @twofours44

Because Bedard was on my fantasy team last season, I paid close attention to him. The Seattle newspapers were full of stories about how he was soft (came back slowly from injuries) and how he was a clubhouse cancer. Google Bedard, you can find bunches of them in mere seconds. My opinion would be to stay far away from Bedard.

  13. twofours44 says:

I think trading for an 8th inning guy with prospects is a terrible philosphy. relievers tend to burn out so it makes no sense. if you can dump heilman for street than do it. but if not there are plenty of quality setup guys in the FA market.

we need starting pitching. sign sheets and either garland or wolf. the nyou have vargas and neise for the few starts that sheets will miss when he gets hurt

  14. vic79 says:

National are going to get TEX, hillarious………….that may make them somewhat respectable in hitting anyways

  15. Gina says:

While I’m not sure if Ankiel will repeat his 08 performance I doubt Church would be valued as highly as Ankiel. For one Church is a corner outfielder, vs a center fielder, and while Church had a higher OBP he doesn’t hit for as much power.

  16. dave27 says:

Clement is a cautionary tale for anyone tossing big money at Burnett.

That said I would take the gamble this time around.

  17. dave27 says:

I agree Gina – it would take more than Church, but probably puts you in the ballpark.

  18. Fiya Minaya says:

Delgado needs to be traded ASAP. The man is a dog and quit on his manager. Make an offer for Tex!

  19. dave27 says:

While we are talking Seattle, for the year that city has had in sports the Mariners should do right by their fans and bring back Junior and Unit to cap off their careers. Maybe even Moyer too.

I don’t know why I care, but you know…I feel bad for them.

  20. twofours44 says:

yes but why trade church when you can go out and get brandon lyon for a couple mil? and then not have to fill another corner spot?

  21. Metfreak says:

Is K-Rod going to be the only big signing? Its seems like other teams are in rumors for everybody

  22. twofours44 says:

fiya minaya – and what do you expect to get back for delgado? he really doesnt have much trade value. leave him there for one more year. hell get his 100 rbis and 30 hrs and then say goodbye.

  23. HOFMets57 says:

I just can NOT see Teixeira going to the Nationals. They would have to unload Nick Johnson. Plus, do you think Mark will want to contend with all the antics in that dugout (Dukes, Milledge, etc). He’s already stated he wants to play on a contender so you can scratch Baltimore off the list, as well. Boras is smart selling Teixeira and getting his hometown teams to up the eventual winning bid. Wanting to stay on the East Coast means the Angels are now a longshot.

That leaves the Red Sox. With the Yankees getting C.C., and maybe Lowe, Burnett/Sheets, you KNOW Epstein will NOT be denied of Teixeira.

  24. Gina says:

thats a good question twofours. i wonder why we haven’t even heard lyon’s name.

  25. Sylar says:

    From ESPN.com:

“Now that the Mets have their closer vacancy filled, they’re turning their attention to starting pitching. They have a meeting scheduled Wednesday afternoon with Scott Boras to discuss both Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez. They also plan to meet with the agents for Randy Wolf and Jon Garland. “

  26. stickguy says:

I love the posters that claim Delgado can’t be traded, has no value, etc. and then in the same post contradict themselves!

    twofours (soething like that) said:

he really doesnt have much trade value. leave him there for one more year. hell get his 100 rbis and 30 hrs and then say goodbye.

So, a guy coming off a big year, with a below market contract, and only a 1 year commitment, expected to put up those numbers, has no value? Then who the heck does have value?

But, if you can guarantee 150+ games, and 30/100 and a .350 OBP, he can stay. I would be shocked to see it though.

  27. rileym says:

Putz is a true closer. maybe not in the top 5, but NOT an 8th inning guy.
and he’s been closing for about 3 years twofours.

now that KRod is a Met, leave Putz for another team, and focus on other positions. RF, 2B and C.

and Dave27? as a Seattleite, thanks for your sympathy. it HAS been a rough year.
i do think that your plan is the only way the M’s are going to keep the revenue up this year. lord knows we sure aren’t going to the playoffs either way.

  28. rileym says:

    re: Bedard.
he’s actually a good option for the Mets – though he prob woulnd’t like being in NYC – since he’s about the quietest mellowest ballplayer out there.

BUT he’s a solid pitcher who had a rough year in Seattle, and as a result, he’s going to make a good deal for some team (though likely not the Mets IF they keep Ollie)
