Read: Johan talked to K-Rod during Negotiations
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 10, 2008 3:07 pm

In a post to Newsday, David Lennon provides incredible details from the Mets negotiations with Francisco Rodriguez.

Lennon relays a collection of interesting anecdotes, the best of which reads as follows:

“When K-Rod and his agent, Paul Kinzer, had dinner with the Mets on Sunday night, they were pleasantly surprised when the team executives got a call from Johan Santana, who had no idea they were meeting with Rodriguez.  K-Rod, a fellow Venezuelan, idolizes Santana and was thrilled that he called.  The Mets handed the phone to K-Rod and the two talked.  In retrospect, it was a turning point as Santana expressed his excitement that K-Rod could be closing games for him.”

oh, come on…there is no way that was a coincidence…

…if not, it would suggest santana regularly calls team executives, which i have an equally difficult time believing…

…the thing is, who cares…it’s freaking awesome either way

haha, yeah i’m sure johan and omar just call to chat all the time…they seem like the “bff” type.

  3. Hey Jeff, It’s Johan. I was wondering if I could borrow your shovel. It snowed a bit last night and I didn’t get the chance to buy a new one.

Johan, that’s cool. Guess who I am having dinner with?

    Who?

    Frankie Rodriguez.

Sweet. Really? I had not idea. Tell him to come to the Mets.

    Why don’t you tell him?

    No problem. Check you later.

  4. ccmetfan says:

Of course it was planned but still pretty cool by the way. “Oh I have a phone call… it’s for you Franciso, it’s Johan.”

  5. NYCESQ says:

    Great Story.

The Mets have several reasons to be thankful that we have this particular ace.

  6. ccmetfan says:

Anyone interested in listening to Peterson on the Fan right now?

  7. QnsNative1718 says:

    Gotta love it…

    NYCESQ:

Reminds me a couple of years ago when Pedro signed…

  9. rockets212 says:

mlbtraderumors says John smoltz is considering the mets amoung other teams to pitch next year.

Would you want John smoltz on a one year contract?

  10. FlightFromHouston says:

is santana the next al leiter, telling the GM what to do?

  11. Maineiac says:

“Hey guys this will be awesome”- Jose Reyes
“Johan stop snickering, he can hear you”- David Wright
    RING RING RING….

“Um hello, this is Johan, can I talk to Mr. Rodriguez”- Johan
“Hi, I want you to play for the Mets, okay bye”- Johan

    K-Rod:
    “HE HE HE HE HE”
    OMG OMG OMG OMG

  12. J0eSmiTh says:

obviously it was planned.. come on..

  13. Flushing_is_Burning says:

man of many talents, he can pitch and foresee the future.

  14. The1 says:

    Johan,

    Please call Manny!

  15. IWantManny/Krod4Christmas says:

Johan is just simply the man period…

how about john smoltz as a set up man?

one mlb source saying he is interested in the mets

  16. zen says:

i’d definately sign smoltz to a 1-year deal. best pitcher on the market for 2009 (and only 2009).

  17. starz31 says:

ksuth…are you referring to after Pedro signed, we were ABLE to sign some kids name Fernando Martinez and Deolis Guerra? B/c I am.

  18. starz31 says:

Smoltz would have to be a bonus signing…we couldn’t expect anything out him or say “jobs done”

I would take him, but I don’t him getting in the way of other moves. Same with Cordero.

  19. NYCESQ says:

    Ksuth-

I have to agree. I wonder if Johan & Co. are going to have more surprise phone calls.

As for Smoltz, if he is recovered, he could be a dominant pitcher. Would he be our number 2? No. I would pick a healthy Smoltz over a healthy Pedro. Do I think it is going to happen? No.

  20. Deadpanwalking says:

I imagine that there’s nobody on the face of the Earth who would be more interested in K-Rod signing with the Mets than Santana.

  21. NYMETSFAN718 says:

Santana coulda won cy young if he had Krod.

  22. helicopter ben johnson says:

vote yes on Smoltz for 1yr, despite his age and the way things ended w Glavine

  23. starz31 says:

I hope Johan finished the conversation with,

Omar, my main man…sign Krod, but if you stop here I’m not gonna throw my changeup anymore

  24. CaseStreet says:

    Johan, do you speak Portuguese?

If so, there’s a certain player I’d like you to call.

Maybe Wright should call Tex, they grew up in the Mid-Atlantic region and probably knew each other as kids.

  25. bobabouy01 says:

    GLAVINE PART II

Along with the Red Sox, the Mets and Tigers are reportedly on John Smoltz’s list of possible destinations if he leaves Atlanta.
Smoltz’s agent has sent the right-hander’s medical records to each team on Smoltz’s list. It’s been reported that there are six teams he’d consider playing for, though it’s unclear whether that’s including or in addition to the Braves.

  26. Sylar says:

David Wright grew up in Virginia

    Teixeira grew up in BALTIMORE

    That’s 118 miles apart.

WE ARE NOT GETTING TEX, END OF STORY

  27. wadehead9 says:

Interesting wrinkle for all the Tex fans out there. There is absolutely zero truth to this, I haven’t even heard it as a rumor. I’m just trying to dream big with my favorite franchise.

I don’t think the Mets are going to sign Tex – as much as I’d like them to – for a reasonable price. I’m not sure we should lock up $200M on that guy. So, I think for 2009 Delgado makes some sense.

So what I’m thinking is, I’d like the Mets to play out 2009, get what they can from/out of Delgado. Then around next year’s trading Deadline, or the 2009 offseason, provided the Padres are still going where they are, I think it would make a ton of sense for the Mets to try to get ahold of Adrian Gonzalez.

By then the Mets might have a better picture of Fmart if he has a healthy campaign, and could package him in a deal for the Padres – who need an outfield as badly as the Mets need a bullpen.

    Thoughts?

    Thoughts?

  28. hot stove chef says:

Johan “Hey Jeff, it’s me Johan. What do you think? Anything good on TV tonight?”

Jeff “Umm… I’m in the middle of something Johan, can I call you back?”

Johan “Oh Geez, I totally forgot you were in Vegas. Hey will you call me when you get back? Maybe I can pick you up from the aeropuerto?”

Jeff “Oh, umm… maybe. I really have to go”

    Johan “Tell me”

    Jeff “what?”

    Johan “Tell me Jeff”

Jeff “……. I love you (click)”

  29. alex242 says:

    29 you’re f**** hilarious!!
with that said now k-rod can call tex and tell him all we need is you..

  30. CaseStreet says:

Sylar, if they grew up in the same region, they might have played in summer leagues and other type of leagues together. I’m not saying it happened but it’s not crazy.

HOW DO YOU KNOW TEX IS NOT COMING TO THE METS? BELTRAN WASN’T COMING AND NEITHER WAS SANTANA. SO UNTIL HE SIGNS SOMEWHERE ELSE, IT’S NOT END OF STORY.

  31. JoseReyesForPresident says:

You know whats rare to find???

A Normal pic of k-rod,that guy always screaming!!

  32. hot stove chef says:

Casestreet. In the case of Beltran and Santana it was never about available money. The Mets had the money to sign both of those players, the players just had other offers. In this case, the Mets can’t even field an offer.

They had a reported 27-28 million to work with, and half of that just went to a closer. They still need at least 1 (but probably 2) starting pitchers, another reliever, and they’ll most likely have to eat some of Castillo’s contract.

Best case scenario they trade Castillo and Heilman for a starter and a reliever. They’ll still need a 2nd baseman (Hudson at about 6-8 per) to replace Castillo and will probably have to spend the remaining 4-6 on a back of the rotation guy with upside (Pedro?)

  33. Jaded1983 says:

hot stove chef, funniest thing i have ever read on this blog!!!

  34. CaseStreet says:

    hot stove chef,

The Mets can field an offer. First, I don’t believe the whole idea that they will keep their budge at $137M. It’ll be at least $150M.

Second, there is only an $8M difference between Delgado and Tex’s price which can be made up by not overpaying for SP, OF or 2B. Plus, I’m sure Omar is looking to dump some bullpen salary.

If you click on my name, you can find on the website a link to the 09 payroll. It can be done.

  35. oleosmirf says:

the mets have the money to sign Teixiera but they dont have a need.

The Mets are perfectly happy with Delgado’s 40 HR season last year.

Omar: Hey Jeff can i get 200 mil dollars? i need to sign Teixiera.

J Wilpon: Idk i’ll ask my dad. Dad!!! can Omar have 200 mil dollars to buy Teixiera!!

F Wilpon: 200 Mil dollars, don’t we already have a 1B who hit 40 HR last season and finished in the top 10 in MVP voting.

Omar: No we’re going to trade Delgado for Andy Sonnanstine

F Wilpon: Andy Sonnanstine!! Well in that case here you go then buddy

    Omar: Gracias

  36. CaseStreet says:

oleo, ur right. Delgado can play 1B until he’s 40.

  37. hot stove chef says:

Sorry, I just don’t think Tex is a priority. This team needs pitching badly. If the Mets were going to spend $20 mil per for 7-10 years, they would have made a run at CC. I just don’t believe the dollars are there.

I also firmly believe the Mets want to leave themselves some wiggle room to make a mid-season trade for the that top of the rotation pitcher. At the end of the season that payroll may very well be 150.

I’ll check out you super high tech name

  38. hot stove chef says:

    CaseStreet,

Cool site, but your spreadsheet actually provides more evidence AGAINST signing Tex. You have several young players who are ARB elible (Maine) as well as players who’s contracts are ending where we will look for replacements (Catcher, 1B, RF) and we’ll be having the same conversations about why the Mets can’t go out and sign superstars at every position.

This is why Omar is hesitant to trade away all his prospects. He needs some of them in the mix to fill holes so he can go out and sign some big names for the mix in future years.

  39. oleosmirf says:

casestreet no but he can play until he’s 37 and by then Carp, Evans or Murphy will be able to take over

  40. mrBill aka DWright says:

Matt, what’s up with that 80’s cell phone?? Haaaa

  41. WestCoastMets_since86 says:

that is freakin beautiful…were there really people that questioned bringing in Johan?

With K-Rod saving his games now, JOHAN WILL WIN THE CY YOUNG NEXT YEAR…how many wins did the bullpen blow for Johan last year?

  42. Beisbl2004 says:

it could be possible that it was just a coincidence, prob not, but possible….im sure he doesnt call regularly but he could have called to see how things were going with the winter meetings…hey, u never know
