Starting Pitcher: Mets, Sox, Yanks and Phils on Lowe
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 10, 2008 8:13 pm

According to Gordon Edes of Yahoo! Sports, the Phillies and Yankees have made an offer to free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe, who has also been in talks with the Red Sox and Mets.

However, earlier today at ESPN.com, Jayson Stark said the Phillies are not pursuing Lowe and have never made an offer.

According to our friend Joel Lipsky, Scott Boras told reporters that he will meet with Omar Minaya tonight – presumably to discuss his clients Lowe and Oliver Perez.

The Yankees offer to Lowe is worth roughly $67 million over four years, reports Jon Heyman at SI.com.

Edes believes Lowe’s desire to return to Boston has been overstated, adding, ‘While he would welcome a chance to pitch for the Red Sox, his primary interest is in signing with a club that he believes has a chance to win over the next five years.”

…as i have written before, the way i understand it, lowe is more concerned with the dollar amount than the years…in short, he is far more likely to accept a four-year, $70 million deal, than he is to accept a five– or six-year deal worth less per season…the buzz around lowe suggests he would like to retire at or around his 40th birthday, and would prefer to sign with a team who has a spring training facility near his home in Florida…

In a poll today on MetsBlog.com, only 72 percent of voters said they would not give Lowe a four-year, $67 million deal.

Speaking of starting pitchers…

The Yankees have made a five-year offer to free agent A.J. Burnett, reports Jerry Crasnick at ESPN.com, who believes the pitcher is seeking a similar deal to what Carlos Zambrano signed with the Cubs, i.e., five-years, $90 million.

The Phillies are looking to trade Adam Eaton, reports FoxSports.com, and are willing to pay most of his salary.

  1. I’m scared that we won’t get Lowe, but i’m also scared that we would get him and overpay…someone please inject me with Optimism!

    Get him Omar!

Let’s see, the Mets have a spring training facility in Florida…. 1 pt

The Mets are sticklers when it comes to long term contracts…. 1 pt

The Mets like to sign older players…. 1 pt

Congratulations Derek Lowe, Metsblog.com and Match.com have found your lover the New York Mets!

  5. JamesK says:

    4 years, 67 million is a bargain.

Mets should offer 4 and 70

  6. Sylar says:

In Heyman’s latest update, he says the Yanks offer is 4 years, $60 million.

There’s absolutely no logical reason we can’t easily top that.

  7. therealsince86 says:

A bargain? Are you serious? A bargain? Lowe is good but that’s #1 money you are giving for a #3 pitcher. That’s a LOT of money.
You could have 2 #4-5 pitchers for that much.

  8. therealsince86 says:

I would at most go 4/64. Any thing more than that is just silly.

  9. therealsince86 says:

Hey why don’t we sign Sheets, Johnson and Smoltz. Between the 3 of them we should get 32 starts.

  10. lol thereal…well, i don’t care who we get, i just want someone that will be able to replace Perez without the wildness. Beggars can’t be choosers.

  11. Sylar says:

I seriously doubt you’d get 32 starts combine out of them.

Plus, those guys total annual values will certainly eclipse those of Lowes, so why not make life simpler and just sign him?

  12. keith says:

Hey guys I don’t know if anyone heard Omar’s interview on Mike’d UP, but if you didn’t you should definitely listen to it on wfan.com he has some pretty interesting comments on Manny and says the position the Mets are taking on Manny can change. If you get a chance listen he has some interesting comments.

  13. therealsince86 says:

Sylar, you can’t think I was serious. LOL. What would you do with all 3 of them? Put them in the pen in between starts?

  14. therealsince86 says:

But if the Yankee’s want Manny is there any reason to think we can get him? If they say 2/60 with option years, you gonna match it?

  15. Philnym31 says:

MLB Trade Rumors says Saito from the Dodgers has a good chance to get non-tendered. We could target him, if healthy, he could be our set-up man.

  16. Sign Lowe now. 4 years, 70 mil. It will be worth it.

  17. therealsince86 says:

Kookie you can’t be serious that Lowe would be worth 4/70. We could have almost 2 pitchers for that. If Omar does that then we have NO more money this offseason. Welcome back the rest of our pen and Niese as your #5 starter.

  18. Rome1224 says:

the starting pitching options are stinky this hot stove. a lot of old dudes available on the cheap with some ok back of the rotation guys that are going after front of the rotation money. i think we should sign dunn and get some bullpen help and sign penny. why should we be the only ny team not to have a husky pitcher? let’s it get done!

  19. Gina says:

I think Lowe & Niese would be better than some combination of Perez/Garland/Wolf which will likely be more expensive.

  20. Gina says:

Also 17.5 mil per isn’t going to get you 2-3 pitchers, or at least not 2-3 good pitchers. And I’d say 17.5 per is perfect fair for Lowe. #1 money is like 20 mil+ now.

  21. metsrmyboys says:

i would love lowe but is no the end of the world if we dont get him i would outbid on the yankees but after the cc deal for them they may do wjat we did with them in the johan deal just keep on raising raising raising the suddenly drop out

    NIESE #3 STARTER

  22. Seaver41 says:

    This would be flippin’ sweet!
We could potentially shorten games to seven innings every night. Joe Smith has done well, but to get something of value, you have to give up something of value.
Plus we’d be getting rid of Heilman.
    Please Omar, make this happen.
    Please!
