Live: Mets announce Trade for J.J. Putz
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 11, 2008 12:34 am

According to the team press release, the Mets have acquired RHP J.J. Putz, RHP Sean Green, and OF Jeremy Reed from the Mariners in a three-team trade involving 12 players.

In turn, the Mets have sent RHP Aaron Heilman, OF Endy Chavez, LHP Jason Vargas, 1B Mike Carp, OF Ezequiel Carrera and RHP Maikel Cleto to the Mariners, while sending RHP Joe Smith to the Indians.

Minaya addressed reporters from the media room in the Bellagdio and said the deal took time, but it all came together this afternoon.

According to Minaya, with Putz and Francisco Rodriguez, ‘We have one of the best bullpens in baseball.”

“The best part about this is that it’s an old fashion trade,” Minaya said, “This is how trades are done, it’s a pure baseball trade.”

“As far as Mets fans are concerned,” Minaya said, “All I kept on hearing on the streets of New York, when you get go get bagels in the morning is, ‘Omar, address the bullpen, please,’ well, to you Mets fans, we’ve addressed the bullpen by getting Mr. Putz.”

Indians GM Mark Shapiro said, “This really did come together remarkable quickly, with a lot of back leg work leading up to it, but it came together quick this afternoon and what I hope is that we’re all feeling good about it a year from now.”

Lastly, M’s GM Jeff Zduriencik said he is not yet ready to speak about Heilman’s role, though he will have a chance to start.

Update, 12:50 AM:

Asked if Putz will want to be a set-up man, his agent told ESPN.com, “He’s one of the top five or 10 closers in the game… No, he would not want to be a set-up man.”

im telling you MANNY RAMIREZ!!!…..im calling it right now at 12:40 a.m. on December 11, 2008..the new york mets will sign manny ramirez

  2. bkfitz says:

Poor Zduriencik. 1 trade and he’s already going to be run out of town.

  3. docgoodens8ball says:

Anybody else annoyed when Omar says ‘tray’ instead of ‘trade’?

  4. jlaz89 says:

Zduriencik is basically saying “Give me a freebie”, “Don’t run me out of town if this doesn’t work out”

  5. The_Fonz says:

    Enterkrod:

I hope you are 100% correct!!

  6. rockets212 says:

the fan is alittle behind so i got the quotes from you about 30 seconds before i hear minaya saying it

  7. kingman 26 says:

Rigsay, you never should have gotten the last comment on the last thread..go look up Putz’s 2006–2007….he is better than everything Heilmanand Smith have done in their lives combined…if he is healthy in 2009, this deal will be up there almost with the Keith Hernandez deal.

    Look at those 2007 numbers!!

  8. NYCESQ says:

Omar just said he spoke to Putz, and that he is very happy to be with the Mets.

  9. Ed Q. says:

You know, the Indians have done a nice job reshaping their bullpen as well. Wood and Smith are nice additions.

That AL Central is very interesting.

  10. HeadlinerG60 says:

That couldn’t be the real Omar. I understood everything he said.

  11. Deaner says:

    minaya said nothing

that guy from seattle got hosed

  12. CaseStreet says:

I’ll expect Show gone by tomorrow.

Sorry, Joe – at least you don’t have to carry the Hello Kitty Bag anymore.

Endy, the left field wall was too high for you anyway.

Heilman, please take your buddy Shoe with you – good luck and go pitch 200 innings.

  13. enterkrod says:

thank you the_fonz…im telling you…i have never been so sure about anything in my life…i think that was one of the most quickest conferences i have ever watched

  14. CaseStreet says:

Omar, you da man! Newtown H.S. may have not taught you how to speak well, but they sure taught you how to make a deal.

  15. kingman 26 says:

NYCESQ thank you for this info! If JJ is healthy and happy to pitch the 8th, get ready for an incredible year!

This is a great day in Met history…..trust me, I used to live in Seattle and follow the M’s and in 2007 Putz was as good as any closer in the game.

  16. enterkrod says:

is it me or does yallof look like he is ready to fall asleep on his stool?

  17. NYCESQ says:

Slowly becoming the best bullpen in baseball?

  18. ccmetfan says:

watch Heilman no hit the yankees in 09

  19. BiggieSmalls says:

great.. Omar answers one question in Spanish..

  20. kingman 26 says:

Case, we got a Mariner and the BEST possible one!!!

We have potentially one of the best closers in the game as out 8th inning guy if he is healthy!

And we can still afford Tex!!

  21. KRodSantana says:

    Great pick-up

  22. CaseStreet says:

“As far as Mets fans are concerned,” Minaya said, “All I kept on hearing on the streets of New York, when you get go get bagels in the morning is, ‘Omar, address the bullpen, please,’ well, to you Mets fans, we’ve addressed the bullpen by getting Mr. Putz.”

He really means, “I kept on reading on metsblog.com, ‘Omar, get em all outta here””

  23. Steviefan84 says:

Omar Minaya needs to end the conference with “Ju know what I’m sayin’?!” Just for old time sake!

  24. enterkrod says:

kingman we can afford tex but red sox can afford him more so..but i understand i would love tex on the mets as much as you would

  25. NYCESQ says:

    Your Welcome Kingman.

I figured I would post about it since no one has really said anything about that, in English.

  26. CaseStreet says:

kingman, whatever makes you happy, buddy!

  27. Steviefan84 says:

Omar Minaya is really saying “The bullpen made me as ill as the fans were last season but I just can’t say that right now. I now realize I made a mistake patch working a bullpen together and that won’t happen again.”

  28. kingman 26 says:

Yeah, enterkrod, I know and that was partly for the esteemed and hard-working Case’s benefit, but I have wantedJJ for ages, and I truly think getting him is as key as getting KRod.

We have the best bullpen in the game now.

  29. rockets212 says:

I was writing a paper when this trade talk came up, that was at 9 something and i cant get back to writing it now because i cant stop seeing what else is going on with us getting putz

    THANK YOU MATT CERRONE!!!!!!!

  30. Sylar says:

Why didn’t Omar answer the question about Putz and setting up in English?

  31. uppertank says:

    SNY ALERT

J.J. Putz will be entering games to Limp Bizkit’s “Nookie”

  32. Deaner says:

not the best bullpen yet, but getting there

  33. oleosmirf says:

    sylar

b/c the question was asked in Spanish???

  34. kingman 26 says:

Deaner, my friend, if JJ is healthy, you will be blown away by how good he is….

  35. enterkrod says:

haha ok..i gotcha…i agree 100% that we have the best bullpen in the game now..hopefully they all stay healthy…

  36. Deaner says:

oh, i know he and k-rod are good, but we have to address other pitiful arms in the bp, too

  37. CaseStreet says:

I’ll see your C.C. and raise you K-Rod and Putz!

Quite a duel going on here.

  38. GravediggerHebner says:

Certainly K-Rod and Putz, when healthy, form a fantastic finish, but with Feliciano and Schoeneweis both still in town I hesitate to call it “the best” bullpen.

  39. elephants says:

Get Wolf…Trade Castillo and the new outfirelder for Guillen, then sign Hudson.
Then, to fianlize this team, sign Lowe.

  40. Steviefan84 says:

Well Yanks might raise the Mets an A.J. Burnett but Mets might counter with an Chad Cordero. lol An injury stud solid closer for an injury prone starting pitcher.

  41. kingman 26 says:

Gravedigger, I hate Schoeneweis perhaps more than any Met since Vince Coleman and the rest of that rancid 1993 team, but with what Omar has done this week, I can even tolerate looking at him next year. If I have to.

And remember, when Feliciano was used in the 6th and 7th, just in the right spots, and not overworked tremendously like last year, he was effective. Yes, let’s CUT Schoeneweis, but Feliciano as 6th-7th inning lefty specialist would probably be pretty OK nehind the incredible two guys Omar got us at Bellagio…..

  42. Mr. Mets Butler says:

Thank you for getting rid of Heilman! About time Omar!

  43. FSMetFan says:

elephants i dont disagree but chances are none of that happens…except maybe wolf…i like lowe but he costs too much, i dont think theyre looking to put guillen in the clubhouse and thats just adding too much money for them

  44. cver says:

One of the nice things is that between getting the “discount on K-ROD” and getting Putz, who wasn’t so expensive relatively and also they traded SO many players that they shedded some payroll there, the Mets have managed to make some moves without adding as much to their payroll as one might think. As a matter of fact, right now, I guess they still have money left over from payroll that came off the books. Still, for those that think we are close to being ready, there is still TONS that needs to be done. Two or three more quality relievers, a second baseman, a left fielder and one or two starters and preferably a new catcher (which probably won’t happen). And some extra bench depth. Well, that’s what is needed for a really solid team. More realistically, maybe a #3 reliever, a new 2B, a new LF and possibly one more reliever – or just some cheapo scrubs that Omar will take a flyer on.

  45. nativeshout says:

now we need someone to start the games and another big bat.

  46. The .500 Club says:

To those curious, Omar basically said that he talked to JJ Putz who said he is happy to be with the Mets, and that he is comfortable with setting up for K-Rod. Then he said that with K-Rod and Putz he thinks the Mets have one of the best bullpens in baseball.

  47. CaseStreet says:

Speaking of Heilman, was it me or did it seem like every time he came in to a close situation, you just got the feeling that the pitcher was going to hit a home run?

  48. rigsay says:

    Kingman,

I already said he had a great 2 yrs. BUT he’s only had 2 good/great yrs and he’s 32. If he returns to 07′ dominance this will be a great trade but im a skeptical met fan. No post season experience, pitching in an absolete city and go rocked in the all-star game.

Smith, Carp and Vargas will probably all be good for a lot longer than Putz

  49. bucknersankles says:

    PEDO MARTINEZ
    CARLOS BELTRAN
    YOHAN SANTANA
    FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ
    JJ PUTZ

TO ALL THE OMAR HATERS AND FAIR WEATHER ” MET FANS ” HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW ?

    SIGN,

    OMAR MINAYA

  50. Funny thing about Minaya is that not only he doesn’t speak good english, but he also does not speak good spanish lol…he must have a third language he’s hiding from us…

  51. dave27 says:

It was mentioned in the last thread, but Carp and Vargas were on the 40-man….that’s two open spots with the Rule-5 draft coming tomorrow.

I still want Show gone…but I am not giving up on Duaner. Last year was his first back after that major surgery, and at times he was good. If he can get to 75% of where he was in 2006, for a 6th/7th inning guy, that would be tremendous. Not unreasonable to think he is still working his way back.

  52. enterkrod says:

    nativeshout

i already have the big bat for us — manny ramirez…i called that he will sign with the mets..mark my words

  53. deelee says:

Putz will close when KRod gets hurt

  54. GravediggerHebner says:

    kingman26,

I second your raves of Putz. I have had the MLB package for a few years and watching Putz in top form is a privilege. I am actually more excited about his acquisition than that of Rodriguez. Hopefully the presence of these 2, combined with whatever Omar does to the rotation, will allow the remaining relievers to find comfortable, succesful roles.

  55. Salz says:

A lot of these Minaya apologists are really upsetting me. This is a great move on his part, but he made numerous poor ones in the last few years that led us to the sickening predicament we ended up in. Get off your high horses and rejoice in our revamped bullpen like the rest of us REAL Mets fans are doing.

  56. kingman 26 says:

I hear you Rigsay, but Putz’s entire career was one huge upswing until his injury last year…after becoming regulalry nauseous every time the SNY camera showed the bullpen last year, please forgive me if I am a bit giddy right now….however, Smith has shown nothing to suggest he will ever touch what JJ did in 2006–2007, and come on, Vargas and Carp are minor leaguers.

And yes, we all certainly want the same thing.

    Except maybe for FuriosoUnClutch…..

  57. kingman 26 says:

Yeah, Gravedigger, if Putz returns to 2007 form, he will be the best 8th inning guy since Mariano behind Wetteland in 1996…

  58. stillbelieve says:

i think omar has one more bullpen move hes gonna pull off. then he should try to land a starter

  59. nsr says:

Just by reading comments from mariners fans, they believe that when healthy, putz is better then krod. im not sure about this but the m’s fans seemed to really love him. as long as he’s fine with being a setup man im happy, bc theres no way krod isnt closing with his new contract.

  60. Nate W. says:

Sean Green will be under the Mets control for the next four seasons, while Reed is going into his first of three arbitration years.

Both players have one option year remaining.

Green is one year closer to being a free agent than Joe Smith, while Endy is two years closer than Reed.

  61. CaseStreet says:

Also interesting that Vargas was part of the deal. I was hoping he’d have a reemergence this year. He’s got talent (He threw a complete game as a rook). Well, at least he’s going closer to home and we got a Mariner!

  62. enterkrod says:

im anxious to hear what putz thinks about the set-up role from his own mouth and not his agents

  63. kingman 26 says:

nsr–JJ is definitely the 8th inning guy, but if you haven’t, do yourself a favor and check out his 2007 stats—WHIP was like .7!!

His 2007 was as good a season as just about any active closer has had….

  64. nsr says:

the seattle times reported that this is what putz says:
“It’s a new challenge and I’m excited about it,” Putz said. “I’m going to a new team that’s going to be very competitive. Frankie’s a great closer and with Sean Green going as well, we should have a great bullpen.”

im very very happy that he is fine with the setup role.

  65. cver says:

I just read that K-ROD’s deal is backloaded and he will only get 8.5 mil in 09, leaving room to add more payroll!!

  66. belikmike23 says:

Time to trade Delgado for starting pitching, Castillo to anyone who wants him, and Schneider and Evans for some more relief, then trade Niese to Texas for Max Ramirez, sign Texeira, sign Sheets for 2 years, sign Garland or someone of his caliber, also maybe Orlando Hudson, and either Manny or Burrell/Dunn/Ibanez.

  67. zen says:

His agent, Craig Landis, said Putz wants to remain a closer.

“He’s one of the top five or 10 closers in the game,” Landis said. “No, he would not want to be a set-up man.” –espn

i believe putz wanting to be on the mets is sincere though. the agent just wants $$$ in 2 years

  68. Nate W. says:

the Mets should look to renegotiate Putz’s deal sooner rather than later so they don’t end up forced into letting him go in one year.

8.6MM is way too much for a non closer. Maybe offer him 6+6 instead?

  69. MetsFan21 says:

I am wondering if Putz will be accepting his role as a 8th inning guy setting up for K-Rod. I have a feeling Minaya is going to pull another rabbit out of the hat with a trade no one has seen coming (Halladay would be an awesome addition to the team).

  70. sundaysection15 says:

HELLO!? is anyone not seeing this part of the post:

    Update, 12:50 AM:

Asked if Putz will want to be a set-up man, his agent told ESPN.com, “He’s one of the top five or 10 closers in the game… No, he would not want to be a set-up man.”

THIS IS NOT GOOD!! even if it is just his agent this could be bad news i hope omar talked to him before he made this trade.

  71. nydre78 says:

Maybe this will lead to a Putz for Ankiel deal that St. Louis tried to make with Seattle the other day? Solves LF.

  72. CaseStreet says:

The 5 we traded were on the 40 man

  73. kingman 26 says:

    Sunday–pay attention:

To those curious, Omar basically said that he talked to JJ Putz who said he is happy to be with the Mets, and that he is comfortable with setting up for K-Rod. Then he said that with K-Rod and Putz he thinks the Mets have one of the best bullpens in baseball.

  74. Nate W. says:

with 14 players under contract the Mets payroll is just about 110 MM

with Church, Maine and others up for arbitration, and numerous players making close to the minimum they are probably in the area of 125 MM, which should leave them 35 MM left to spend if they were correct about increasing the payroll 30MM over last year.

I’d sign two starters and leave LF alone. Murphy, Tatis, and Reed should be fine.

hopefully there is more tinkering coming in regards to Scho, Castillo, and maybe Dauner or Delgado…

  75. kingman 26 says:

nydre78—You should seriously be permanently banned for making such a ridiculous post as that.

  76. Nate W. says:

    kingman (63)

4.6 hits/9 and 10.3K/9 is just mind bogglingly good.

If he can just have a couple months like that in 2009 it will be a good year for the Mets.

It will be interesting seeing how the Mets manage to lose any of Santana’s 33 starts. ;)

  77. Nate W. says:

lol, we have 3 LF’s and may sign another… why would we trade from a weakness for a strength…

  78. nydre78 says:

Ok go ahead and ban me. What I’m saying is, if Putz truly does not want to be the setup man, he can be dealt and help solve another problem the Mets have. Ankiel is a good hitter, as good as Ibanez, yet doesnt cost as much. St. Louis tried making this deal with Seattle just the other day. If Putz has no interest in playing for the Mets they should talk to St. Louis about Ankiel. Dont see how that is such a ridiculous idea.

  79. Nate W. says:

Case, Vargas was out of options and could have been waived at the end of spring training so I see moving him now as just fine. Carp I would rather have kept, but in terms of making this deal happen of course they can have him.

I’m surprised how much value Heilman and Smith had in the terms of this trade. The Rockies wouldnt give up Street, but they got Putz for Heilman. wonky

  80. chriffer1975 says:

Yea now we don’t have to have a heart attack everytime we go into the 8th or 9th with a lead lol. Omar needs to get on Manny asap… if not manny then trade Church for SP and sign Milton Bradly and Ibanez either 1 of these two moves would allow us to overlook the offensive short comings of our 2nd baseman.

  81. nrmax88 says:

I honestly am fine with Castillo at 2B. He likely will be better then last year, and he is seen as horrible because the team just looked bad as a whole. If Castillo puts up a .280/.350/.350 line I will be okay with that. And he should be good for that. He has always been solid he was just really awful last year. 2B is not a position you need offense out of that. Out of the 4 main defensive positions(C,SS,2B,CF), we have great offensive players at two of them. With Wright at 3rd and Delgado at 1st, we have a good offense. Murphy and Tatis will easily out perform the LF position from last year in a full season of platooning, and we have to just cross our fingers and hope Church stays healthy. Maybe even deal Church, and sign Juan Rivera who is a nice little player and would slot nicely into the 7th spot. He also can field and throw well. RF is the one position I really worry about because of Church’s concussions.

  82. nrmax88 says:

Use the rest on pitching. Bring back Ollie and I know it is against the popular opinion, but bring back Pedro on an incentive laden deal. He wants to redeem himself. In almost all cases, a pitcher will be fully back to what you can expect in his second year back from shoulder surgery. Pedro’s stuff was more then good enough to win, we watched him win with equal or less stuff in 2005, his location just wasn’t where it could, and hopefully will be this year. If he gets his command back, he will win baseball games because that is what he does. On a one year commitment with an option for a small base salary…. why not? You just need to have backup plans. Jon Niese is our backup plan, along with a few other veteran starters you bring in to man the AAA staff in case of injuries. This is still Pedro Martinez.

  83. metsrmyboys says:

ok i haven’t read all your posts i will do that later but i do not like this deal this deal is awful it was all great in the begging but SMITH CHAVEZ AND SMITH AND VARGAS plus scraps for putz and some back up of nice job omar WTF WERE U THINKING bad job on omar with this i am sorry we gave up 7 out of 12 players

  84. ajm317 says:

Very happy to see heilman go, smith and endy not so much. But, Putz is going to be an outstanding addition!

  85. todagain says:

    Yes Omar!

    A puttz for a Putz!

  86. todagain says:

………….or is that a Putz for a puttz

  87. metsfan1 says:

A guy who throws 98mph as a setup man and we get rid of Heilman. Damn. Merry Christmas everyone.

  88. metsfan1 says:

Damn. We get a guy that throws 98mph as a setup man and get rid of Heilman. Merry CHristmas.

  89. swirlywand says:

I woke up at 5:00 am, read that Aaron Heilman was gone, and started waking everyone I know up….but I neglected to read the rest of the announcement…and subsequently, I was in tears (yes, I’m a girl)….I can’t imagine no Endy….he’s Super Endy…he’s just not meant to play anywhere else….sniff.

I’m sure I’ll get over it when our bullpen goes worst to first….but this is the tough part of being a fan…sniff.

  90. Elastic says:

Omar, address the rotation, LF and 2B

  91. mark4212 says:

How can anyone say this is a bad job by Omar….. I want to know why.

    1. Everyone wanted Heilman gone.
    2. Chavez wasn’t anything more then a Defensive Replacement….. Even with Alou & Church out he wasn’t playing every day
    3. Joe Smith can’t get out a lefty, and with his arm angle probably never will. That talent is easily replaceable.
    4. Jason Vargas isn’t anything special.
    5. I don’t even know the other 2.

Mets just completely transformed their entire bullpen. Out are a guy who wore out his welcome. A right handed specialist. In is the Single season saves record holder, a closer who saved 40 games in back to back years, a middle relief guy who logged 80 innings.

Now if they can move Show, Feliciano, Castillo, and delgado. Add 2 SP’s. I’ll be one super happy fan.
