News: Mets draft Darren O’Day in Rule V

by Matthew Cerrone

Update, 12:55 PM:

Darren O’Day, who the Mets selected in Round 1, has a torn labrium indetified in an MRI during September of last season, “an injury the right-hander will try to heal through exercise rather than surgery,” wrote the Los Angeles Times last October.

…Ted Berg of SNY just told me that o’day can be put on the disabled list, and essentially be stashed away while he rehabs, without having to be returned to the team…

…there is some sort of rule about needing him to eventually be active for 90 days, or having to return him to the Angels, but i’ll worry about this when it’s relevant in six months…

Update, 12:50 PM:

According to Lipsky, the Mets did not lose any player in the draft.

so, i believe they now have 34 guys on their 40–man roster

Update, 12:48 PM:

The Mets selected OF Carl Lodenthel from the Atlanta’s organziation during Round 1 of the Triple-A phase.

Additionally, the have picked RHP John Madden from San Diego, also in the Triple-A phase.

…sorry, i had to do it…i mean, how could i not…

Update, 12:40 PM:

The Mets selected RHP Rocky Cherry from the Orioles organziation in the second round of the Major League phase.

In a live blog of the draft at Mets Minor League Blog, Toby Hyde writes of Cherry, “I like this pick…. He throws in the low 90s with a decent slider.”

Cherry was 0-1 with a 2.75 ERA in 30 games for Triple-A Norfolk in 2008, during which he struck out 40 batters while walking 11.

Original, 12:24 PM:

The Mets have selected RHP Darren O’Day from the Angels during the Major-League phase of the Rule V Draft.

The 26–year-old Day struck out 29 batters in 43 innings, during which he had a 4.57 ERA, through 30 relief appearances for the Angels in 2008.

In an article for MLB.com, in March of 2008, Lyle Spencer wrote, “A side-winding reliever who simply gets hitters out, O’Day has thrust himself into contention for a middle relief role expected to surface at the start of the season.”

“A pre-med student at the University of Florida in Gainsville,” Spencer explains, “he initially wanted to be a veterinarian, focusing on equine treatments. Shifting to standard medicine, he was accepted into medical school at Florida.”

He was 10-6 with a 2.57 ERA in 84 Minor League games, prior to joining the Angels in 2008.

baseball reference shows this guy is pretty decent

enterkrod December 11, 2008 at 12:27 pm

hahahahahaha….rocky cherry..now thats a name – if he sticks around the mets organization – which writers can come up with some awesome headlines

NYCESQ December 11, 2008 at 12:27 pm

Confidence poll?

swirlywand December 11, 2008 at 12:28 pm

I’m so waiting for someone with a GUT reaction that is GREAT to post something that makes me forget Endy….please… :-)

alex242 December 11, 2008 at 12:28 pm

scouting report on O’DAY:

As-sets:

Has a very good arm with plenty of life and movement on his pitches. Is a difficult pitcher for right-handed hitters to get a read on.

Flaws:

Is a little too wild and must have better control in order to see regular appearances at the Major League level.

i’ll take him in the bullpen too..

MetsFan21 December 11, 2008 at 12:28 pm

Rocky Cherry is a former Expo if I am not mistaken.

therealsince86 December 11, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Day got some experience last year and did ok with the Angels. He had very good minor league numbers. You never know.

Crazy Eddie December 11, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Rocky Cherry is 29. I’m not sure the rules for guys in the AAA portion.

djbutler December 11, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Darren O’Day will remind a lot of Met fans of Joe Smith. O’Day is one of the Angels best prospect relievers and he has a submarine delivery. He works at 86-89, occasionally touching 90 or 91. He throws a 2 and 4 seam fastball, slider, and changeup. He needs work on his changeup, but has excellent control.

bkfitz December 11, 2008 at 12:31 pm

O’Day is not a bad pickup.

I believe the Cubs traded Rocky Cherry to the O’s for Trachsel in 2007. What a waste.

Tidewater December 11, 2008 at 12:33 pm

Rocky Cherry sounds like the name of a transvestite performer or prostitute.

Tidewater December 11, 2008 at 12:33 pm

What if Cherry had to relieve Kunz?

vic79 December 11, 2008 at 12:33 pm

Hmmm well take a chance on him…….i like the strike out numbers

did they lose anyone?

Tidewater December 11, 2008 at 12:34 pm

“Cherry, who was in for Kunz, comes out as Manuel inserts Putz.”

Kalihan42 December 11, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Rocky Cherry–if he ever makes the ML roster I can’t wait for the first anouncer to say “He popped his Cherry” when he strikes someone out.

Gina December 11, 2008 at 12:37 pm

O’day has high ground ball rates. That’s good.

sheahey5 December 11, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Joe Smith’s replacement

sherlockcollector December 11, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Didn’t Rocky Cherry change his name – it used to be Buster.

NYCESQ December 11, 2008 at 12:38 pm

How much is O’Day making?

alex242 December 11, 2008 at 12:40 pm

(18)

LMAO!!!!!

soundsoul31 December 11, 2008 at 12:40 pm

They didn’t start making K-Rod jersey’s yet, they’re too busy printing ones that say Cherry on them so they can strategically place them next to the existing Strawberry ones

Gina December 11, 2008 at 12:40 pm

I don’t think we really had anyone to lose vic.

arrabin56 December 11, 2008 at 12:41 pm

i think Cherry was in the 2nd round of the MLB draft, not the AAA draft. They took a Braves OF and someone named John Madden in the AAA phase…

therealsince86 December 11, 2008 at 12:42 pm

O’Day would be making close to league minimum as I understand.
From the looks of it he is Joe Smith. We shall see.

nostradamus December 11, 2008 at 12:43 pm

cherry….strawberry….any ballplayers named blueberry?

BringBackDaveTelgheder December 11, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Wow, that’s a nice little pickup for so late in the round. There’s a chance he can stick with us as either a long man or specialist…

eduardosmets December 11, 2008 at 12:44 pm

i read 8-10 teams are calling the cubbies for mark derosa. I really think the mets should trade ryan church for him and i bet the cubs would since they need a left handed bat. Then the mets can have him out there and he can play second when we want to sit castillo and tatis and murphy can help him out in the outfield. Then we sign raul ibanez to make up for the power of church this is a great idea for the mets derosa is a hard player and i really like how he hit off lefties last year

bona95 December 11, 2008 at 12:45 pm

From CBS Sportsline, dated 10/22/08: O’Day has a torn labrum, which can ruin a pitcher’s career. He is nothing more than organizational depth at this point. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues right now.

Ummm, that ain’t good.

vic79 December 11, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Nice seeing a Submariner come back with Smith gone…………….he could make it, we will see……….

Can’t wait to see what Sanchez and Schoenweiss will get back…………….teams need relievers and they may look at these guys just needing a change of scenery

Gina December 11, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Yeah looking at O’days minor league splits he looks like an extreme right specialist.

MEH he won’t be counted on …………..if he can bounce back great if not nice knowing ya like Register

STEFWEIS December 11, 2008 at 12:48 pm

STUPIDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Gina December 11, 2008 at 12:49 pm

Oh wow a torn labrum? It’s odd we picked him then I guess.

Gina December 11, 2008 at 12:52 pm

I’m so confused. He’s recovering from a torn labrum, as in he tore it in the past and is coming back from it now and will be ready by spring training, or does he have longer to go than that? It doesn’t make much sense to add him to the 40 man roster if he’s not going to be ready to pitch by spring training.

kidfromqueens December 11, 2008 at 12:53 pm

The torn labrum’s the only reason he wasn’t protected on the Angels 40 man roster. He didn;t have surgery, so it’s just a question mark as to how well his off-season rehab works. If it doesn’t heal right, then he goes back to LA and we don;t lose anything. If he’s healthy, we end up with someone with far more talent than people usually left unprotected in the Rule 5 draft. I like the move- low risk, high reward.

adropofvenom December 11, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Actually, it makes perfect sense to select O’Day, BECAUSE of his Torn Labrum.

We can stash him on the Disabled List all season, and thus have his rights going forward.

That isn’t a move made for 2009, but 2010 and on.

GravediggerHebner December 11, 2008 at 12:54 pm

Isn’t it possible, regarding O’Day, that the Mets can stash him on the DL instead of returning him? I vaguely recall the Red Sox doing that with an OF (Stern?) a couple years back.

darkstar73 December 11, 2008 at 12:55 pm

ok everyone, time to freak out because we picked this guy up in the rule V draft and he has a torn labrum. Omar obviously didn’t know that, they have no clue what they’re doing, what a dysfunctional organization, what is going on here? Horrible offseason, this ruins everything!

eduardosmets December 11, 2008 at 12:56 pm

MARK DEROSA FOR CHURCH PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEE AND SIGH IBANEZ

therealsince86 December 11, 2008 at 12:58 pm

Eduardo who plays RF then? Ibanez or Murphy? LOL. Derosa? If Derosa what do you really gain?

Glikbach December 11, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Haha, dude your funny!

Hit The Weights Zeile December 11, 2008 at 1:01 pm

nice job by omar basically replacing joe smiths ROOGY spot.

Gina December 11, 2008 at 1:01 pm

I’m not completely against DeRosa for Church, not a fan either but not against it, but what would the cubs stand to gain?

eduardosmets December 11, 2008 at 1:02 pm

1st off all i dont know whats with church he cant seem to hit off lefties getting rid of him for church he can play right field w/ tatis and murphy since we were going to platton any way and derosa gives us antoher right hand hitting bat. And he can play second base so at any night we can bench castillo and have tatis or muprhy and derosa in the same lineup while ibanez plays everyday in left field think about it man it helps us out alot especially if we have ot keep castillo we need a back up despretaly

Gina December 11, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Although yeah, a corner outfield of Ibanez and Murphy doesn’t sound like a good idea. Unless Citi ends up playing like CBP, then it won’t matter since every flyball will be out of the park anyway.

Crazy Eddie December 11, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Derossa is gonna be 34. Come on people. Why trade Church for him? Give church a chance to get it together.

There is a rule about the DL in the Rule V draft. They have to be active for 90 days. But I think that can be over 2 years.

Seaver41 December 11, 2008 at 1:05 pm

I like Omar’s focus on rebuilding the bullpen. Think about it: He’s now landed five relievers: K-Rod, Putz, Sean Green, Darren O’Day and Rocky Cherry. I’m still praying Minaya can dump Schoenweis. I don’t know if I’d give away Feliciano, though. I’d like to see Omar sign Joe Beimel.

Gina December 11, 2008 at 1:06 pm

eduardosmets

you realize we play offense AND defense right? With as many flyball pitchers as we have, especially if we being back Ollie, a corner outfield of Murphy/Tatis and Ibanez, will probably give up as many runs as we score. Beltran is pretty close to superman in the outfield but even he can’t chase down that many balls.

NYCESQ December 11, 2008 at 1:07 pm

On a video on ESPN, Peter Gammons said that the Mets are still looking for Starting pitching, and an infielder. The infielder he mentioned was Alex Cora?

eduardosmets December 11, 2008 at 1:08 pm

thats the negative of losing chavez makes you have to keep guys like church for defense

NYCESQ December 11, 2008 at 1:09 pm

Could that be the trade bait for Schneider? Then, does that mean we have another catcher lined up?

therealsince86 December 11, 2008 at 1:09 pm

I can’t really read that eduardo. But, if I am to understand it correctly you want to trade Ryan Church for a guy who is older, has basically the same stats, makes more money and has only 1 year left on his contract.

Gina December 11, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Cora seems like a decent fit. His bat is anemic but he walks and his defense is much better than Castillo’s.

darkstar73 December 11, 2008 at 1:12 pm

why on earth would you trade church for DeRosa? that makes absolutely no sense. Church is a fine player, and i’m not sure why you think he “can’t hit lefties.” Wait, you probably listen to Mike on wfan too much, that’s right. His stats are a bit worse against lefties, as most left handed hitters stats are, tahts just how it goes, but they’re not bad. He had an up and down year because of all his injuries. Give him a chance, some of you sound like you know absolutely nothing about baseball, its not even funny.

eduardosmets December 11, 2008 at 1:12 pm

therealsince……

alright so if we dont trade church then mets should get jerry hairston jr. i thought about it and losing churchs defense is to much but i wont miss his bat him against lefties is just as much torture as castillo but hairston would be a good back up for castillo but ibanez is a must sign

starz31 December 11, 2008 at 1:13 pm

I knew there had to be a reason a player with his talent was available.

Heal through exercise rather than surgery? I feel like I have heard this story many times, yet surgery always comes back at the ending.

mdemaio December 11, 2008 at 1:14 pm

Minor point: I guess this means no one picked Shawn Bowman, which is probably a good thing…

vic79 December 11, 2008 at 1:17 pm

sneaky, they are going to stash Oday on th e DL then have him go to rehab and then form there see if he can come back………meh whatever

Deal Sanchez and Scho………..I pray someone t akes Anderson too….I still think they should gamble on Robertson in Detroit and Thames for these guys

Church is going to get moved I think……..not that I am a fan of it I just think it will happen for a Righty bat while keeping Murphy in LF

movaughnMVP December 11, 2008 at 1:17 pm

Are the Mets selecting players based upon their porn-like names?

Rocky Cherry and JJ Putz star in “Bush League…”

Cumming Soon.

zen December 11, 2008 at 1:19 pm

eduardosmets: i bet you love the last chapter of joyce’s ulysses.

SweepTheLeg December 11, 2008 at 1:19 pm

COra doesnt make any sense at all..he is OLD, he is a career .245 hitter..why the hell would that be a good pick up ?? bec he woudl come cheap??? if the mets are going to get a 2nd baseman it BETTER be ORLANDO HUDSON!! no cheaper version of him or a player complimentary to but not named castillo

PeterDragon December 11, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Mets are looking for a guy who can play SS as well as 2b to replace Easley.
I’d prefer Nick Punto, but Cora does fit that slot

NYMETSFAN718 December 11, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Hey guys, just for curiosity, as a Met fan, i checked out the phillies equivalant to metsblog. There is no sign of any threads of the KROD, or Putz deals. One sight had a small story on KROD.

Anyone think they might be a little nervous? Especially with no utley till June?

NYMETSFAN718 December 11, 2008 at 1:22 pm

If they woulda made a big splash im sure we woulda seen it on Metsblog.

zen December 11, 2008 at 1:23 pm

nervous or busy measuring their ring fingers?

Gina December 11, 2008 at 1:23 pm

So sweeptheleg you’d rather have a more expensive version of Castillo? Which is basically what Hudson is.

NYMETSFAN718 December 11, 2008 at 1:24 pm

zen, good point, but still, it has to be in their minds.

enterkrod December 11, 2008 at 1:27 pm

manny ramirez thats all im saying

therealsince86 December 11, 2008 at 1:28 pm

Eduardo
Jerry Harriston Jr is for sure a guy to look at. He would be the perfect utility guy to replace Easley and could take over 2B if we ever dump Castillo. The guys only 32 so it’s not like he’s old.
But I expect him to be in high demand. If we can’t get him then Grudzy would be another good option for that back up IF role.

zen December 11, 2008 at 1:46 pm

cole hamels today: “the mets are choke artists.”

oleosmirf December 11, 2008 at 1:55 pm

gina

thats not fair, Hudson is a great team guy and can still hit.

i still wouldnt sign him to a multi-year deal but he’s not in the same breath as castillo

Crazy Eddie December 11, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Why are people over valuing Hudson so much? He’s a good player but he has no power and will cost a draft pick. Already lost the first rounder… we need to restock the farm system too.

nrmax88 December 11, 2008 at 6:54 pm

“gina
thats not fair, Hudson is a great team guy and can still hit.
i still wouldnt sign him to a multi-year deal but he’s not in the same breath as castillo”

On a one year deal like you said, no, he isn’t. On a 4 year deal it is much closer then you think. He is coming off back to back season ending injuries and is on the wrong side of 30. He doesn’t have power and his speed is bleh. Not an impact player and if he wants to play here for 1/10 or 2/18, then I would listen. Otherwise I am not interested.
