The Rule V Draft will occur today at 12 pm EDT, in what is typically the final event of the Winter Meetings.

According to Jonathan Mayo, at MiLB.com, writing about the Rule V Draft, “The buzz at the Bellagio has been that there isn’t much to buzz about.  There seems to be a smaller pool of talent, largely because of the change in rules allowing teams an extra year than in the past before having to protect a player on the 40-man roster.”

Mayo lists eight relief pitchers who could be selected in the draft, including Cubs LHP Donnie Veal and Pirates LHP Kyle Bloom.

for what it’s worth, the Mets pick at 23, and i would not be schoked to see them take a shot on a relief pitcher, like they did last season with Steven Register

Ahhh, Steve Register. Omar has certainly come a long way since then.

I guess they still have Matt Wise hidden away somewhere.

Guys to look at in the Rule 5 today
Corey Wimberly. Could fit in the Awful Reyes slot. Lots of potential as a utility man. Had a .370 OBP in AA this season with 59 SB’s. Played most of his games at 2B but has played 2B, SS, 3B, CF, RF, and LF. Nice. Our own version of Amegaza.
Evereth Cabrea SS/2B who like Wimberly had a good OBP and is incredibly fast, stealing 73 SB last year.
Zach Kroenke: Young LHRP in Yankee’s organization. Had good numbers in AA and AAA last season.
Eduardo Morlan: Lots of good K numbers in the minors.
Luis Perdomo
192 K’s in 158 Innings with a WHIP 1.04

None of these guys would most likely stick, but what does it hurt to try any of them?

Register was not a bad candidate but by the fact that he was terrible for the Rockies this year means he was clearly not ready.

Definitely worth taking a chance on someone. 50K is nothing to Wilpon.

What about the 7′1” guy from the twins?

therealsince86 December 11, 2008 at 10:10 am

I was looking at him as well. I just don’t think we need another LHRP.

I read he threw 98 MPH. We could try to move Sho then. Another weird plus is the guy is rumored to have arm troubles. If he’s on the DL it counts as keeping him on the roster.

Anyone know how many rounds there are? Can you pick more than 1 player?

therealsince86 December 11, 2008 at 10:16 am

He would have to be on the 40 man and be placed on the 25 man as soon as he was off the DL if I remember correctly.

Crazy Eddie December 11, 2008 at 10:21 am

Yes, but he has to be active to 90 days, but that can be done over 2 years too.. its complicated.

Go after Chris Mason or Zach Kroenke. Both would have the opportunity to make the big league roster. Mason can compete with Niese and others for the 5th spot in the rotation.

Kroenke could capture a bullpen spot with a good spring, perhaps.

Worse case if you take the 7 footer is you might be able to get the Knicks to take him oh wait Isiah is not there anymore.
