Outfield: Angels may target Raul Ibanez
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 11, 2008 1:28 pm

Jasyon Stark of ESPN.com, and Ken Davidoff at Newsday, both believe free-agent OF Raul Ibanez may become the Angels top target if Mark Teixeira signs with another team.

However, Davidoff adds, “The Cubs and Phillies seem to have taken the lead in the competition to sign Ibanez.”

Earlier in the week at FoxSports.com, Rosenthal listed the Mets, Angels, Phillies, Braves and Nationals among teams interested in Ibanez.

According to Rosenthal, members of the Mets front office were spotted meeting with Ibanez’s agents at a restaurant inside the Bellagio hotel on Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking of outfielders…

Rosenthal recently reported that the rumored deal between the Brewers and Yankees involving Mike Cameron ‘is not done and may not get done.’

According to Rosenthal, Milwuakee is asking for a second player in addition to Ian Kennedy, whilke the Yankees would like the Brewers to pay a portion of Cameron’s contract.

That said, while Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the chances of a deal are ‘remote,’ the Los Angeles Times reports the deal is done.

  1. Ibanez will sign with da’ Phillies and be a Met killer……

  2. enterkrod says:

because they are going to go after manny..im telling you

  3. lil pelf says:

manny will sign with the mets and be a phillie killer

  4. enterkrod says:

lil pelf…i was just about to say that..you beat me to it

  5. NYCESQ says:

I think this would be a great time to go in and sign Manny. With all the other teams focused on Tex, Ibanez, etc, we may be able to make him a solid offer, and run.

  6. therealsince86 says:

I really don’t want Ibanez because he cost us a pick. However, he’s not bad and I like the fact that he is consistant and can play LF/1B.

However, I am hoping Omar just waits out LF. There are a lot of the same type guys floating around and I think we may be able to get one on the cheap and short term.
Between Burrell, Abreu, Ibanez, Dunn, Rivera, Bradley there’s a lot of can’t play Defense LF out ther and I would welcome any of them at the right price.

  7. therealsince86 says:

It is funny that Manny is in a stand still. If the Yankee’s or Mets do not get involved he could be left out to dry. I don’t know which one would be better. Laughing at everyone because we got Manny or lauging at Manny because he screwed himself.

  8. enterkrod says:

    thereal

i choose laughing at everyone because we got manny

  9. All in favor of signing Manny 2 yrs/50 mil???

    Thats what its gonna take…….

  10. Gina says:

Here’s hoping they keep the lead.

Also thereal, Bradley’s defense isn’t actually as bad as advertised, he just can’t ever stay healthy. But personally I wouldn’t want any of those guys as long-term left fielders.

  11. lil pelf says:

    ill chip in 50 bucks!

  12. nostradamus says:

ibanez is an old lefty schlub. guys like him, dye, and dunn would do nothing but help the mets lock down second place. omar, SIGN MANNY!!!!

  13. enterkrod says:

    johan

thats fine with me…i just want to see manny in a met uniform along with k-rod and johan and jj and reyes and beltran and delgado…ohhhh my god

  14. NYMETSFAN718 says:

Johan, i’d give manny 3 years, maybe 3/60

  15. therealsince86 says:

It’s almost like Manny is every thing right and wrong about baseball at the same time.

If we get him for a discount then I am fine with it.

  16. 2009_believe says:

We should just sign Manny, he is a game-changer he’d be great here. Could you imagine the team? That team would go all the way.

  17. TheMonstersOutOfTheCage says:

We should sign Chad Cordero he wasnt offered arb.

  18. SweepTheLeg says:

i knwo we just traded a lot for putz, but does anyone think it is a good idea or even possible, to trade jon neise, show, and nick evans for CARLOS LEE!! and maybe throw in castillo

  19. lil pelf says:

    it really would

  20. NYCESQ says:

    I’d be in for 1 yr/30 mil or 2/50.

Yes, he is worth that much.

  21. The_Fonz says:

Manny would be FANTASTIC in this lineup, just imagine him surrounded by Wright, Delgado, Beltran and driving in Reyes..this would be an offensive machine…and if we sign manny, i could live with castillo as our 2b.

    GO GET MANNY!

  22. lil pelf says:

    sign me up for 2/50

  23. therealsince86 says:

3/60 is a good deal. Even 4/75 is doable. But this 2/50 is insane.

  24. lil pelf says:

he might hit 400 in our lineup

  25. therealsince86 says:

    Meant to say 2/60, sorry.

  26. enterkrod says:

we will find out soon enough because omar is looking at manny right now..thats just my guess

  27. I agree Manny for 2 years …no brainer….if we signed Manny ..id be totally fine with Wolf and Penny as our 4 and 5 w/Parnell in the wings…..

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Wright
    Manny
    Delgado
    Church
    Castro/Schneider
    Castillo

    Wow…….

    Santana
    Maine
    Big Pelf
    Wolf
    Penny/Parnell

    Krod
    Putz
    Cordero
    Sanchez
    Show/Feliciano (1 will be dealt)
    Stokes

    Solid……

  28. Kellman says:

I don’t even care what outfielder the Mets get, but they need one. The offense is not nearly good enough without an upgrade.

  29. therealsince86 says:

What about 6/90. He wants long term there’s his long term. Chances are he never plays that long but it would allow him the security that he wants but gives us flexibility. How much does he think he will make a year in 3 years anyway?

  30. enterkrod says:

im just not comfortable with tatis and murphy platooning left…we all know tatis had a comeback year but you dont know if he can do that again..and murphy is gonna be a good hitter..but his defense is a little ehh..granted manny has his flops out there too…but he will come up and hit a homerun his next at bat to make up for it

  31. therealsince86 says:

If we signed Manny, should we then trade Delgado? Let Murphy cut his teeth at 1B and get some return for Delgado? Hopefully a #5 starter?

  32. NYCESQ says:

I wouldn’t give him a 4 year deal for fear of him becoming disinterested. But I would give him a heavy two year deal. Mostly because we have Wagner coming off the book’s next year, as will Delgado. That would free up 20 million alone.

  33. therealsince86 says:

enerkrod, manny or not I don’t think it will be a platoon in LF. It will either be Murphy or a new player. Tatis will be on the bench.

  34. zen says:

cole hamels today: “the mets are choke artists.”

  35. Philnym31 says:

Nick Punto resigned with the Twins.

  36. therealsince86 says:

Would you rather have him disinterested or disgruntle. I want no part of that Manny we saw in Boston last year at the deadline. Sign him for 6 years similar money to shorter deal and let him retire a Met. Seems as that’s always been the sticking point. That he wants to know that no matter what I am going to be on this team.

  37. NYMETSFAN718 says:

NYCESQ, you can give hima vested option for a 4th year, like what they gave KROD, if he does well than great, if not than he can leave, this way your protected. I really can not see him falling off productivelt in 3 years.

  38. alex242 says:

I guess if we sign manny i’m good either way… just please no abreu, no ibanez or dunn.. if i wanted to see a comical show in LF i’d go to the ballet..

  39. TheMonstersOutOfTheCage says:

Help me — i cant stop making batting orders

    Reyes
    Hudson
    Delgado
    Manny
    Wright
    Beltran
    Church
    Schneider

  40. therealsince86 says:

Uh, you think Manny is a better defender than any of those? Come on they are all terrible in the field. That’s why they are LF’s.
    And
    Manny’s contract with the Mets.
3/50 with player options for 22.5 for 2 more years. The first buyout would be 10 million. 2nd buyout would be 5 million. That would bring the contract up to 5/95.

  41. Gina says:

Isn’t 60/3 what the Dodgers offered?

  42. NYMETSFAN718 says:

monster, with manny, i really dont think you need hudson, i would be perfectly fine with castillo and 2B and in the bottom of the order.

  43. NYMETSFAN718 says:

gina, i think the dodgers offered him, 2/45

  44. NYCESQ says:

Yes, I would go for a three year deal, with a vested option for the fourth.

I just think this is the perfect time. The problem is, Boras will probably leak the Mets’ interest in his client. Thus, creating a possible offer from another team. We wouldn’t be able to get him if the losers of the Tex war get in on Manny, as well.

    The time would be now.

  45. enterkrod says:

    thereal

you are right…im thinking of a while ago when omar said thats what will happen..i would still love manny though..haha

  46. therealsince86 says:

Why would you guys want to compound the Castillo mistake with one twice as large in Hudson? He’s just not that good and he wants 2 times what Castillo makes. 4/48 for Hudson? LOL.

  47. Slim says:

Say no to Ibanez bring in Bradley…

  48. NYMETSFAN718 says:

i agree thereal, hudson would be a mistake.

  49. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Zen, to be fair, he didn’t come out and use those exact words. Evan Roberts kind of put the words in his mouth.

  50. Philnym31 says:

We really could use an impact bat to add to the lineup. Putz will be here for the next two seasons and then probably will leave town. This is our window to win a World Series. Let’s get it done!

  51. therealsince86 says:

Bradley is a younger Alou with the same old body. He’s a great hitter as long as he does not injur himself and if he had to play the OF everyday I am sure it would not take long. That being said, if he ends up cheap I will take him.

  52. NYCESQ says:

I would be more inclined to keep Castillo, if we have a power threat added to our lineup. On that note, we still need to sign a utility infielder. That may be where the Alex Cora rumor started.

  53. alex242 says:

i rather see bradley than ibanez, he will be cheaper and is fearless, plus he’s a good player, no abreu either.. just go and get the best fit for the team.. TEIXIERA or MANNY..

  54. enterkrod says:

if i was omar i would throw out a small number to manny…i would flirt with it…see what he wants and how much we are willing to pay him

  55. therealsince86 says:

I wonder if a deal for Rios could be built around Church, Delgado and pitching prospects?
Then you sign Manny? LOL what an OF.
    Reyes
    Rios
    Wright
    Manny
    Beltran
    Murphy
    Schnieder/Castro
    Pitcher
    Castillo

  56. lil pelf says:

reyes, murphy, wright, manny, delgado, beltran, church, castro, pitcher… PLAY MURPHY AT SECOND

  57. therealsince86 says:

I would not try and low ball Manny at all. I would offer him my 5/95 deal 3 years with 2 option years. Take it or leave it Manny.

  58. therealsince86 says:

lilpelf Murphy is not going to play 2B. That is why I said why not trade Delgado if you get Manny?

  59. LetsGoMets123 says:

I just read on MLBRUMORS.com that the Peavy deal with the Cubs is dead. NOW OMAR like you did with Santana ,sweep in and get Peavy, Yea I know he does not want to come to New York. The the Mets are NOW a different team.. He may have a change of heart. It does not hurt to enquire.

  60. NYCESQ says:

5 for 95? I would be out of it by then. But I agree with not being able to flirt with him. This would only create attention, and give Boras the ability to advertise interest in his client. I bet he wouldn’t sign anytime soon if he was low-balled.

  61. NYMETSFAN718 says:

    Twins resign Punto

  62. therealsince86 says:

If Omar has not already offered the farm for Peavy I don’t know what to think. IF Peavy would play in NY I would glady do Fmart/Murphy, Niese and Evans.

  63. therealsince86 says:

Hmmm, does SD need a closer? As much as I love the idea of Putz…… Could a deal be built around him for Peavy?

  64. NYCESQ says:

If we got Peavy, do we have to get Manny? Definitely not. Do I think it will happen? No.

  65. alex242 says:

    The real:

    wouldn’t this looks better :

    Reyes
    Murphy
    Wright
    Manny
    Beltran
    Rios
    Schnieder/Castro
    Pitcher
    Castillo/my daughter who’s 4 years old?

  66. LetsGoMets123 says:

    therealsince86

    100% agree

  67. NYMETSFAN718 says:

lthereal, like letsgomets said, maybe he has a change of heart seeing that the mets are a diff team. I really really do think we have the players to get it done.

  68. eduardosmets says:

can some one tell me why the mets ownership doesnt let omar do his job like they let him do everything else. They always say we support omars choices and i know omar wants manny but i keep hearing they dont like manny but wont support this? what happend to supporting omar. 1st of all there getting 20 mill from the stadium name owing rights from citibank and manny would attrack so alot of fans to come to the park that havn’t ever seen manny play inperson this guy will help us win a championship and make the mets money i dont know where this doesnt make sense?

  69. alex242 says:

    trs:

if we get street now maybe we can but i don’t think the mets would wanna part with putz..

  70. NYMETSFAN718 says:

eduardo, you are right, manny will bring alot of revenue to the Mets, tickets, jerseys, etc… it makes too much sense to sign him.

  71. therealsince86 says:

NYC why would you be out of it by then?
As I said it starts as
3/50 and grows. The 2 option years are for 22.5 a year with a 10 million dollar buyout the first year and 7.5 million the 2nd year.
Thus the 3 year contract would be 3/60 if we did not resign him. Not a bad contract for him. If he stayed then he would be at 4/72.5 with a 5 million buyout making it 4/80.

  72. Philnym31 says:

    This team needs Manny Ramirez.
And two starting pitchers would be nice. lol

  73. alex242 says:

Either bring in #24 (Manny) or #25 (Teixeira)… That’s it!!

  74. bucknersankles says:

WE CAN ELIMINATE ALL DISCUSSION ABOUT WHO IS GOING AFTER WHO IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST, AND HOW DOES THAT AFFECT US ETC BY SIGNING THE ONE MAN THAT WILL TURN OUR LINEUP INTO A JUGGERNAUT….. MANNY RAMIREZ.
NATIONAL LEAGUE PITCHER’S WILL BE ON THEIR HEELS FROM THE 1ST INNING,HIS NUMBER’S AND CONSISTENCY ARE ABSOLUTELY SICK, HIS ABILITY TO HIT IN THE CLUTCH AND GET ON BASE ARE WITHOUT PEER AND HE IS NOT SLOWING DOWN.
DON’T BE FOOLED BY THE ” HE’LL BE 37 ” CROWD THIS MAN IS THE GREATEST RBI MAN OF THIS GENERATION AND AS I’VE STATED BEFORE HE IS REGARDED BY MANY AS THE GREATEST RIGHT HANDED HITTER IN BASEBALL HISTORY, HIS NUMBERS ACROSS THE BOARD ARE ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING HANDS DOWN.
THE ENERGY HE’LL BRING TO OUR BALL CLUB WILL BE PHENOMENAL, THAT SAID, IT WON’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE ABOUT DYE GOING TO ATLANTA OR ANY OTHER SENARIO THAT MAY PLAY OUT BECAUSE WE WILL HAVE THE DOMINICAN MESSIAH AND A LINEUP FOR THE AGES.

  75. alex242 says:

    (74)

I TOTALLY AGREE BUT WHY ARE YOU WRITING IN CAPS!!! LIKE YOUR YELLING!! LMAO..

  76. therealsince86 says:

And Alex, no I don’t want 2nd year Murphy batting 2nd with Rios who is also a good base stealer batting 6th.

  77. NYCESQ says:

I just feel that would be similar to the issue the Red Sox had with him. He wants to know where he will be. Option years will leave that in the air.

I’m not saying he wouldn’t do it. I just know if that may be the best plan, based on previous history.

  78. lil pelf says:

reyes wright beltran delgado and manny would tear up the national league

  79. alex242 says:

    TRS:

but rios can help establish the back of the lineup better.. murphy is more patient and can give reyes a better chance to steal whenever he wants..

  80. Philnym31 says:

Seriously guys, we just traded for JJ Putz and signed K-Rod. Putz will be here for the next two seasons, and after that will probably skip town. Let’s get Manny and win a World Series! We have a window to work with here and we should go for it. TRS86, that frame you gave on a Manny contract is perfect. We need to lock down at least one starting pitcher though, preferably two in all honesty. It’s a lot to ask, but let’s get it done.

  81. lil pelf says:

philnym i completely agree. we have a team that is built to win now, manny makes so much sense in so many regards.

  82. NYCESQ says:

If we get Manny, we go into the season with Niese as our 5th starter.

  83. therealsince86 says:

Make them player options then. Still he has to understand that if he wants us to be competitive then he cant be looking for Arod money for 6 years.

  84. enterkrod says:

manny is going to be on the mets..i have a strange feeling about it..it just makes too much sense to sign him

  85. therealsince86 says:

I am not going to argue over a player that unfortunately we will never get. I like him in the 2 spot you like him in the 6, does not really matter that much. LOL.

  86. therealsince86 says:

I can also agree with if you get Manny and trade Delgado for a starter then Niese could be your #5 as long as you bring in some depth.

  87. alex242 says:

Lol, true.. for now i see murphy #2..

  88. STEFWEIS says:

I ATE WENDYS FOR LUNCH. Bad for me, Im well aware.

  89. therealsince86 says:

I still think Manny ends up back with the Dodgers but right now even without rumors I would still put him 2nd on the Mets.

Gotta go here in a minute. Task, think about what starters we could get for Delgado, Sanchez and Show?

  90. NYCESQ says:

I would NOT trade Delgado if we got Manny. It would give them both complimentary protection in the lineup. Plus, we would get complimentary picks next year. I would much rather take a shot at it this year, and have the picks to reinforce the farm.

  91. bucknersankles says:

    242,

MY KEYBOARD WON’T LISTEN TO ME .

  92. TBlz says:

If Show were to ONLY be a LOOGY, what about him dont you like?

  93. therealsince86 says:

You gonna risk offering Delgado arbitration for 2010? Not me. He would make 15+ for that year.

Besides trading Delgado if you get Manny does 2 things. Gives you a chip to get a SP and saves you 12 million to go get another one. Solves 2 holes with one move.

Manny, Murphy> Than Delgdao, other LF besides Manny (because we can’t get Manny and pitching.)

  94. Gina says:

If we get Manny then we’re not going to be able to afford a top tier starter, or likely any starter FA, which is why we would be trading Delgado. But that being said I don’t see anyway Delgado brings back a decent starter.

  95. therealsince86 says:

Delgado won’t bring a top starter back, you are right Gina. And now Sonnanstine is most likely out anyway. However, I could imagine a Delgado, Sanchez, Show, Evans/Kunz trade could.

  96. NYCESQ says:

It is an interesting point, but I wouldn’t consider it saving 12 million. You are still spending the money on Manny, and unless you are trading for someone who plays in the majors for free…you are likely going to pick up another salary.

  97. If we got Manny Id be totally ok with Pedro coming back as our #5 as well….Reyes would score so many runs in 09 it would be incredible!

  98. NYCESQ says:

    That’s true Gina.

I’d love to have Manny, but Ibanez is more likely. I won’t complain, but Manny changes everything. Does anyone know what Wolfe is asking for?

  99. zen says:

no punto. re-signed with the twinkies

  100. eduardosmets says:

just read the mets were 1 of 5 teams that did not lose a player in the rule 5 draft picks which tehy did a good job protecting there players and the yankees lost the most 2day 6-7 players most than any team

  101. Philnym31 says:

Interesting …. Putz shared a dorm with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady while at the University of Michigan.

  102. Gina says:

I’m pretty sure I’ll complain if we sign Ibanez. Especially if he signs for more than like 12 million per.

  103. alex242 says:

    FRANCISCO CABRERA

  104. MRenz31 says:

ESPN.com says the Phillies are going hard after Ibanez…. Omar better hurry to jump in to snag him!

  105. eduardosmets says:

now that punto is signed we def. have to sign jerry hairston jr. we need strong bench help and back up for castillo . Also so he doesn’t go to the phillies and there left with no second basemen to start teh season.

    Now to the stats
jerry hairston is 32 years old utily infield player in 80 games he had 47 runs -20 doubles- 2 triples – 6 homers – 36 rbi- 15 stolen bases (def. going to need that with chavez gone to pinch run late in games)-and hit above .300 average off both righties and lefties

    a must sign

  106. Gina says:

Hairston has never been a full time player but it doesn’t seem like there’s any downside to signing him. I wonder why we haven’t heard his name, not just for us but other teams.

  107. NYCESQ says:

Gina, what do you think Dunn is looking for?

If the Phillies do grab Ibanez, then that leaves Manny, Dunn, and Abreu.

  108. Kalihan42 says:

The way I look at things if the mets put the same team (essentially) on the fielfd this year as last year with the improvments to the pen we made then I think we win the division. That being said, I don’t see Minaya shifting gears from focusing on SP right now in time to pry Ibanez away. I think it is more likely that Minaya, considering the current market on pitching, just focuses on trying to bring Perez back after the yanks lock everyone else up and waiting on OF. Iabnez might be gone but they might be able to scrounge up enough money to bring in a Dunn, but I wouldn’t count on it. I think he is going to want to make sure the rotation is set before he deals with OF…that and finding a suitor for Castillo, but I get the feeling no one wants him.

  109. Kalihan42 says:

On another note, it seems excessive at this point, with their line up, for the Phillies to be trying so hard for Ibanez when they should be focused on pitching. They do have, arguably, the best line-up in the national league. I know they have to fill Burrell’s spot but still…

  110. vic79 says:

I am not a Ibanez lover….he is still good but old……rather go with Church and have them sign a good Righty bat to go with Tatis to back up Ryan and Murph…………..for go sakes let them play

I hope Castillo can get dumped but for what?…..Hudson would be great batting 2nd

I would still do Castillo for Guillen………..take the risk and if he is a headcase then just release him

  111. vic79 says:

Do the Royals not need a 2B replacement?…..if they are stuck with Guillen then it makes sense no?…………also Tehan can play RF

  112. vic79 says:

I think signing Dunn makes sense too…..place him in RF and just have Reed replace him for D…….then when Delgado leaves put him at 1B full time

  113. The_Fonz says:

Darryl Strawberry just gave two thumbs up for the mets to get manny, hahahaha (he’s on Mike Francessa)

  114. ravi3 says:

Kalihan42 says: “On another note, it seems excessive at this point, with their line up, for the Phillies to be trying so hard for Ibanez when they should be focused on pitching. They do have, arguably, the best line-up in the national league. I know they have to fill Burrell’s spot but still…”

Remember the Mets tied the Phils for 2nd most runs scored in the NL in 2008….The Phils lost a significant contributor in Burrell, while the Mets’ offense is intact.

  115. krod9 says:

I’d pitch an offer to Manny, but go hard for Dunn. It all depends if the price is right, boys and girls.
