Outfield: Yankees and Brewers talking Cameron
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 11, 2008 7:56 am

Steve Phillips of ESPN.com believes the Yankees and Brewers are in serious talks about sending OF Mike Cameron to New York and Melky Cabrera to Milwaukee.

here’s a suggestion, next year, hold the Winter Meetings in New York City, it will make things a lot easier

Last night, at the Star-Ledger, Dan Graziano reported the Yankees resumed talks with the Brewers regarding Cameron and Cabrera, adding the deal would include a pitching prospect, ‘not likely to be Ian Kennedy.’

Update, 9:15 AM:

The Daily News writes, ‘The Yankees are set to acquire Cameron,’ in exchange for Cabrera.

Update, 9:17 AM:

by the way, i was under the impression the Yankees had been shopping cabrera and kennedy to the Cardinals for Rick Ankiel…so, perhaps ankiel is now earmarked for a different deal...

    ehhhh

  2. mr.gee21 says:

Ha. No kidding! Every road leads to NYC, apparently.

Hopefully so does a subway series…with better results this time.

  3. NYCESQ says:

Haha, that’s funny. The Yanks may be able to hold future meetings at their bank vault.

Matt, there is a decent article on Espn, called “New York Lottery.” The K-Rod-Putz combo is scary good.

  4. dave27 says:

I guess Milwaukee is worried that stealing Sabathia from them wasn’t enough. Hope they get the memo that Melky Cabrera is a joke.

  5. seth1280 says:

NYCESQ, Can you link that New York Lottery, I could not find it?

    Thanks

  6. NYCESQ says:

    Cameron/ Melky deal is done.

  7. Mel Rojas says:

The Yankees are either gonna be a 110 win team or a bust in my opinion. If your gonna invest 12 years and 300 million dollars into two starting pitchers you’ve got deep pockets and probably a screw loose so we’ll see. Cameron fits their needs and cabreras a bum

  8. NYCESQ says:

I am not so sure the Yanks got the better end of that deal. Their avgs are very similar, except that Cameron has more pop. He also strikes more, and his defense isn’t as good as Cabrera’s.

  9. Mel Rojas says:

Mike Cameron is 100 percent better defensively than melky. Melkys defense is drastically overrated by yankee fans.

  10. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

Steve Phillips called Brian Cashman “brilliant” yesterday for how he handled the Sabathia situation/contract.

I guess we know why Steve Phillips works for espn….

  11. Prismo says:

Ah, so if the Mets offered Sabathia a 15 year/$300 billion contract, and he signed – Omar would be “brilliant”?

  12. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

of course because Omar knew that CC didnt want to play in New York so he had to outbid himself by 160 million dollars and 8 years…..”brilliant”

  13. the Straw says:

The Diamondbacks and Red Sox are reportedly discussing a trade of Eric Byrnes and Julio Lugo.

This makes a lot more sense for Boston than the Tigers talks, though they’d have to have some idea that Byrnes is willing to be a fourth outfielder in order to make the deal. Byrnes is owed $22 million over the next two years, while Lugo is due $18 million. If acquired, Lugo would take over as the Diamondbacks’ second baseman.

Omar needs to replace Lugo with Castillo. They are almost the same player.

  14. the Straw says:

what i mean isnt to bring in lugo, but to trade castillo for byrnes.

  15. kistics says:

looks like yanks are giving up ian kennedy and melky for cameron.

    good trade for brewers

  16. zen says:

omar deserves to be in vegas to get a little r and r in the evening and avoid listening to all our complaints :)

  17. beltran the warrior says:

melky cabrera is manure. yankees won this deal outright. melvin should be hanged.

  18. Prismo says:

“looks like yanks are giving up ian kennedy and melky for cameron.”

    where do you see that?

  19. zen says:

beltranthewarrior: cameron is making $10m and cabrera is making $400,000. brewers need help elsewhere and cameron isn’t worth that contract

  20. vic79 says:

well Yanks had to do this since their are no CF out there

listen Yankee fans, ur old………Damon and Cameron used to be awesome but now they are old ……..they are still pretty descent players but come on……….and Matsui is old too….Nady and Cameron are gonna strike out tons

all in all had to be done………good deal for the Brew Crew…Melky will have less pressure

  21. alex242 says:

    guys,

    i was thinking last night…

how about we send delgado and castillo + a prospect to the orioles for either markakis or roberts? which one would you do? and would the orioles do it kowing we’ll automatically enter the teixeira bid?

  22. metsfan1 says:

I don’t understand this trade from a Yankees standpoint. Cameron is a very good defensive outfielder but is showing his age. He is also a former steroids user. Just wait until he starts striking out. Yankee fans will start wondering why they gave away a talented young player that is coming off of a poor season.

  23. kistics says:

“looks like yanks are giving up ian kennedy and melky for cameron.”

    where do you see that?

I think I saw that in MLB Traderumors.. It would not make sense at all for brewers to trade cameron straight up for melky..

  24. kistics says:

Sorry.. I’m wrong.. it looks like Melky straight up for Cameron.
That’s really dumb on Brewers part unless they’ve got something else up on their sleeve like offering big money to FA pitchers

  25. starz31 says:

I like this quote about Putz:
“But Minaya wasn’t concerned about the pitcher’s health, saying New York had a scout at his final game of the season and Putz maintained a 98-99 mph velocity.”

  26. Mel Rojas says:

    Kennedy isnt involved

  27. alex242 says:

    starz 31:

i’m glad u like the signing of JUAN JOSE PUTZ…

  28. Any chance the Yankees could bring in Jay Payton or Benny Agbayani for an all-former-Mets outfield?

  29. starz31 says:

I love this trade…and we did trade some young prospects, Keith Law said our youngin Cleto could be a sleeper…but obviously not any time soon for us.
Our farm system has a few top prospects, not much ML ready talent underneath but we have a very strong young foundation in the system from all our latin signees…And these kids will only keep getting better and hopefully closer to ML-ready in the long-run.

  30. starz31 says:

Ankiel would alot better return than Cameron. But in that case…good.

Cameron is a good guy and great fielder, but very streaky at the plate. while ankiel is only getting better and has some good offense traits next to his web-gem arm.
