Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels, when asked if the Phillies believe the Mets are ‘choke artists,’ said the following, during an interview with WFAN in New York today:
“Last year and this year we did believe that. I think three years ago we didn’t, because they smoked everybody and I thought that was the year they would go to the World Series – and unfortunately that didn’t happen. But, you know, that’s kind of what we believe and what we’re gonna always believe until they prove us wrong. Yeah, over the last two years they’ve been choke artists.”
Darryl Strawberry, regarding Hamels’s quote, while co-hosting today on WFAN’s Mike’d Up, said:
“That’s sad… If we had a team say that about us – oh, no – they were gonna be in trouble… I mean, it would definitely be hard if, in the days us playing, if somebody said that, I mean, we’d have stuck one right in his neck. We’d be fighting. There’s no way any one would be allowed to disrespect us like that, and that is what has happened to the Phillies.”

Is Cole Hamels this years Jimmy Rollins?
It reflects poorly on the leadership of this team (Delgado, Beltran and even Wright) that players on other teams have the audacity to say things like this and don’t expect any retribution for it.
*Sigh* I miss ‘86 and all the bad boys on that team…
I still don’t understand how coming back from like 8 games under .500 and like 6-7 games back this July and then losing the division to the team that had been better the majority of the season makes us chokers. If anything the Phillies barely saved themselves from choking.
Not for nothing- but he was asked a direct question “Are they choke artists”, and responded. He didn’t go out of his way to say this. Still, if they want to use it as bulletin board material then lets go, get it done already
I miss 86 and that mentality.
umm…does Cole know the Mets beat the Phils in head to head matchups?
REVENGE!!!!
When it comes down to it, if you aren’t the world champion, you can be considered a choke artist.
Every team that doesn’t win it all has to choke some where. The Mets didn’t choke last year. Their first half team proved to be flawed. After a tremendous second half, they just lost the division fair and square.
If you want to talk about true chokers, I’d go over to Cubbie land
we are gonna beat the phillies up this year..they werent as good as the mets last year..yeah they won the world series…however please give us even only 6 of those games back we win..please this year is gonna be like the 06 year again…and hopefully some attitude like the 86 team straw was talking about
Hamels is a hypocritical fruit
When asked about Rollins repeatedly pointing to the sky, Camels said “Oh no, he’s pointing at our dugout”
Santana better bean this loudmouth when these teams meet, or it will reflect poorly on the Mets.
The whole interview made me sick.. But when did the Phillies become the police of behavior. Shane Victorino dances as much as Reyes and it’s time Rollins shut his mouth. The Phillies won, they should take their championship and enjoy it, but everything comes back how the Mets did this. As a Mets fan I say bring on the celebrating and dancing… it;s a game they should be allowed to have fun and I rather have a team with energy then none at all.
Thats why:
a) Darryl is and will always be the greatest Met ever.
b) I hate Phillies players and fans (and i live in Philly)
c) The mets need an injection of some attitude in this years team. Bring in someone who likes to mix it up. This team needs to play with a chip on its shoulder all year. It needs some Antonio Pierce on this team.
unfortantely most of the mets players aren’t bothered by this. the phils needle them every year.
isn’t their one enforcer on the roster. i hope putz or k-rod are willing to put a fastball in a few phillies’ backs
Why should this be any different than the many other disrespectful comments that the Phils, Marlins, etc. made about the Mets last year? It didn’t seem to fire them up then, why should it now?
Ah Darryl — articulate as always. I love him, tho…
I wonder what Beltran is gonna say about this one.
I smell blood… and lots of green fur
I’m sorry but if any of you are clinging onto the Mets beating the Phillies head to head last year, and thinking that means anything, then your nuts
Fact is, we didn’t get it done, so this is what you got to deal with.
phuck you cole! i hope santana or pelf sticks one right in his ear hole the first time they play each other this year. man I wish i was alive for that 86 team…
First of all, unfortunately, Hamels is right. Second of all, with all this talk about pitching, we’ve forgotten how badly we wanted the Mets to get a gritty-type player at the beginning of the offseason. It’s still early but that hasn’t happened yet.
seeing footage of putz looks like he has some attitude..k-rod is k-rod as is jose..that team mentality should be if you want us to shut up..beat us
My question is why are the Phillies so pre-occupied by the Mets. It amazes me that the make the playoffs 2 years in a row and win the World Series and yet have this inferiority complex about the Mets. Weird isn’t it?
World f*in champions, or something like that. It is amazing the double standard through which these two team are viewed. The Rollins – Beltran thing, the Reyes – Victorino thing, the Myers thing, the Utley thing, the Rollins by himnself thing. The list goes on and on. Mets do that stuff, it’s “sheesh, what a bunch of a*holes and arrogrant pr*cks.” The Philles do it and are lauded for their “grittiness and determination.” What a joke.
lol by the way Sethman, i always laugh when the Marlins talk smack about the mets…they’re no where near them
Thats why i believe we should fight those guys this year ! YEAH a real fight , something serious make’em respect us one way or another !!!!!!!!!
Hole Camels is an idiot, no doubt.
Of course, he’s right. The Mets did choke. But that’s not something he should say for public consumption.
I predict: He’ll be sorry.
Thats it……..Unleash the two headed monster!
TB the Phillies are grittier and tougher then us, that you can’t argue.
The only way this stops is by beating them on the field. Period.
It strikes me as a nothing less than hypocritical for any Philly player to get on one of our players for putting his finger in the air while he runs the bases because they want to uphold the integrity of the game – yet all they do is talk trash. They ran their mouths before the season even started. They couldn’t even celebrate their World Series without talking about the Mets, it’s sad.
These guys need an old school brawl. A few of them. K-Rod should push them over the edge if they can’t stand Jose. It’s gonna be pretty funny.
There is a time when putting fastball in the ribs is the right thing to do. The Mets have a need to do this early in the season. Take the three game suspension and send a message. I want that ball in the ribs of Hammels, Victorino or Rollins. Slide hard, tag hard and throw inside. Met players need to grow some hair on their chests and play like men. We had our Shawn Estes moment earlier this decade. Enough of being wimps.
Looks like somebody just got himself traded to the Pirates on my video game team.
It sad that the Met players are not going to do anything about this or any other team that talks smack about them they are too PC
Love playing in the National League where the pitcher has to put his money where is mouth is. For this reason alone, I’d like to see the Mets re-ink Perez and let him do a wild pitch number in the mid 90s that drills this idiot.
This is why I’d like Varitek. He’s the only FA who would start a fight to defend this team.
COULD FRANCESCA LET STRAW TALK PLEASE???
I think they will
This is why the mets need some tough guys on this team not softies. I like Reyes, Wright, Beltran and Delgado, but there isnt a controversial bone in their bodies. They’re softies. And this isnt to suggest rollins hanley ramirez and this chump hamels are tough. But it is so apparent the mets lack tough leadership that these guys talk about them because there are no repercussions. Im not sure the same can be said about Johan, Putz and K-Rod though. And unfortunately for mr.hamels hes gonna have to step in the batters box.
This is why i would like the mets to get a guy like eric byrnes. If the dbacks would do lugo for him, i cant see a logical reason they wouldnt do castillo for him.
exactly why we need Manny. improve our lineup and someone who wont take s**t from anyone
weakside, I cant quantify “toughness”, so I tell you what I wont argue:
Philles bullpen blown saves: 15
Mets bullpen Blown saves: 29
He was not talking smack. He was asked a question and he answered it honestly. And you no what HE IS RIGHT. Come one wake up we all no it. The last two years the Mets were where they needed to be as far as making the playoffs and winning the division with what 15 games to go both years and GAVE IT THE PHILLIES. That is called choking in my book. Say what you want but it is true.
The Mets need to play this year like everyone is out to get them. Play hard and take no crap from no team not just the Phillies.
““Last year and this year we did believe that. I think three years ago we didn’t, because they smoked everybody and I thought that was the year they would go to the World Series – and unfortunately that didn’t happen. But, you know, that’s kind of what we believe and what we’re gonna always believe until they prove us wrong. Yeah, over the last two years they’ve been choke artist”
he’s right.. and what bothers me is, as of now, right now, a guy who hasn’t played in like forever is sticking up for the mets!! reyes, beltran, d-rod:
PLEASE STAND UP!!
he should have said..heilman show sanchez feliciano and the rest of that bullpen choked
“exactly why we need Manny. improve our lineup and someone who wont take s**t from anyone”
THANK YOU!!!!! I think that what hamels said will be use to get him 2..
Hole Camels? LMAO. Fact is they did beat us, fact is we choked twice not once dont make excuses cuz we were in first in september both years. Fact is Daryl is right something needs to be done. If we want to carry ourselves with the attitude then back it up and who cares what people says. Run your mouth get beat up and get beat. End of story. Hole Camels out.
They’re choke artists? Well OK, at least they’re good at something! :-) (Kidding, I’m kidding)
What do you want Wright, Reyes, Beltran to say? Come out and say no we didn’t choke? THEY DID CHOKE. The Mets would look dum right now if they came out and said anything because everything that Cole said is true. The only thing they can do is win the division next year and say hey looks like we are not chokers anymore.
KRod and Putz are the PERFECT way to begin to change all of this….
(46)
how much sh** are these players take???? if somebody keeps f****ing with you all the time and talking w/o u provokin the m is envy, but at one point you’re gonna say:
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!
You can listen to the interview on the website. Kinda lighthearted. WFAN guys said they hate Hamels, so that should make folks here feel better.
As for head to head matchup…that somehow didn’t come up in the interview-it was about the World Series DVD set (don’t know who’d buy that in the WFAN audience). Don’t think the head to head deal is in the World Series DVDs either.
K-Rod and Putz will change the face of the bullpen and give this team more confidence right from the start. Plus more changes are coming.
I don’t want to hear any Mets saying anything about this in the winter or in ST.
I want there play next year to do there speaking. Not just wins. I want to see this team play like everyone is out to get them and I want to take no crap from any team. If that means some bench clearing brawls so be it. This team needs to tuff in up.
that’s right: manny would make the difference, but the wilpons won’t allow omar to bring him in. the didn’t let him last year and it cost the mets their fans a title.
Straw is right Ray Knight woulda knocked hammels out for this garbage.
Yeah, Manny would have been even better than Lidge out of the bullpen last year.
Come on!
Hey everybody,
i see a lot of people here defending the mets and then people talking about how they are chockers or whatever, fact of the matter is they are our team (and for most of us) we leap to defend them which is fine. Yes 2007 was a choke job 2008 well we didn’t play well down the stretch, but come on this is just crap, its a new season the 2008 one is behind us, get K-Rod or somebody to drill him with a fast ball and shut it all up i’m just hoping that this season starts differently
My hope is that Big Pelf sticks it in Rollins ribs, or better yet, goes up against Hamels and sticks it in his side.
I also think the Mets should “overly” celebrate when playing the Phillies, Marlins, or Nationals. Give them a real reason to hate us. Dance at home plate, throw at hitters, pump fists at strikeouts. It’ll go from hatred to intimidation real fast.
Few things I find more annoying than calling the 2008 Mets choke artists. The fact is they weren’t that good. By the end of the year they had no bullpen and only 3 reliable starters. They aren’t choke artists for losing a lead in September, they were overachievers for having a September lead to begin with.
We got K-Rod, and J.J. Putz. Now we need to go out and get Sean Avery. Problem solved.
As much as I hate to hear it, Hamels is right. We did choke. If we can get a middle reliever, starter and maybe a LF and 2B there will be no choking.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !
IT’S TIME TO PUT A HORSES HEAD UNDER SHANE VICTORINO’S BED SHEETS.
Kasper-
You are spot on. Hamels will get what’s coming to him, as will the rest of the team.
No, the Phillies aren’t obsessed with the Mets, not at all.
I think K Rod should put one off the “P” on Rollins’ helmet the first time they match up…since he will never face Hamels lol
I hate the Phillies as much as anyone, but we have to be fair here.
Number 1, Cole Hamels has never come off as obnoxious or careless. He seems like a good guy. I can’t say the same about Rollins or Victorino, but whatever.
Number 2, the guy was asked a question and he answered it. He didn’t just volunteer that the Mets are “choke artists.” He was specifically asked if the Mets are “choke artists.”
Obviously he knows the Mets better than some of the fans on this blog.
it’s sad how phillies are obsese with us… but with that said, for now, they can talk all they want, they are the champions.. but note to hamels:
pitch better than a 10 ERA against us and we’ll talk..
gas-
But a true professional would never say, “yeah, they are choke artists until they prove us wrong.” Would Wright ever say something like that? No…for two reasons.
1) It’s just fuel for the other team. Why give them bulletin board material already?
2) Most “good guys” would beat around that question like “Well, I don’t know if I’d say that, but I think it’s safe to say they have had disappointing years.” It’s called being professional, which i though Hamels was.
Gasface77, Cole Hamels has a rep for being a cocky arrogant jerk, so you’re claim that he’s a decent nice guy…that doesn’t fly.
Look nothing we can do, they are going to shoot their mouths off because the Mets haven’t been able to shut them up yet.
The thing that annoys me is how we hear about the arrogance of the Mets all the time when in fact the Phillies talk trash about the Mets much more than the Mets do, but because Jose dances, the Mets are arrogant and cocky. Its ridiculous
I think it’s ridiculous that the Mets are labeled as a cocky team. Jose…now K-Rod…that’s about it really. We have some of the most mild-mannered professionals on the team in Wright, Beltran, Delgado, Church, Schneider, Maine, Santana, etc. In fact, everyone is usually complaining about how low key these guys are, so I don’t want to hear about the Mets being “cocky,” because that is not true at all.
I don’t care what Cole Hamels has to say.
I don’t care what David Wright has to say.
I don’t really care what Omar Minaya has to say.
Just win, baby.
The way I see it, the Phillies are wannabes. They want to be on the same level as the Mets but can’t figure out that they never will be.
There is the Sox/Yanks rivalry and the Mets/Braves rivalry and the Phillies just wanna belong……poor, poor, Phils.
Hope you enjoyed your October of glory while it lasted cuz from my seat, it looks like Omar Minaya has had enough of you guys and its time to lay you all down to sleep.
Phils, when it comes to MLB, know your place.
I think it’s safe to say the Mets-Phillies rivalry is a lot stronger than the Mets-Braves rivalry now. But needless to say, we just have to win and they will shut up.
“The way I see it, the Phillies are wannabes. They want to be on the same level as the Mets but can’t figure out that they never will be.”
They also want to be the World Champions.
Oh wait, they are…
It’s senseless to trash talk in December. Let the rosters fill out, let’s win the games, and then talk.
I’ve been saying since September ‘06 –when Shawn Green downplayed the significance of the Philles’ series at Shea (on the heels of a four game sweep in Philadelphia,) and Paul Lo Duca was the only player to show any extra motivation, — that this team might not have the stomach (i.e., cojones) to face down a motivated, confident opponent. They made some changes and got one player who is unafraid of anything (Santana), but it wasn’t enough. Now, more changes and the same challenges. Every Met, rather than downplaying this, or “tipping their caps,” etc., should be saying “Mr. Hamels, congrat son your title, but when you’re on the mound, there are twin bullseyes — between the “L’s” in “Phillies” on your jersey, and right between your eyes. It’s on, and you are going down.”
MEMO TO WILPONS:
GET MANNY THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING.
THE SWAGGER ON THIS TEAM WILL BE THE 86 METS TO THE 10TH POWER.
I PROMISE YOU THE PHILLIES WILL SHUT THEIR PIE HOLES STARTING WITH ONE ,JIMMY ROLLNS.
It’s the first time they won a world series in 5983509 years, yet they still need to talk about us. Talk about a feeling inferior…
Err . . September ‘07. . . . Though if I recall correctly, September ‘06 had a few hiccups, too, before they clinched.
It.Is.On.
NO, you don’t go after Manny just to shut the Phillies up. Let them talk…I don’t want this to turn into a Yanks-Sox thing where we sign guys just in spite of the other team. If we get Manny, we better damn well have a plan for Delgado so we can move Murphy to first…that kid is too good of a hitter to come off the bench every day.
oh and anyone who is hoping for someone on the mets to drill somebody, or have a ball “slip”. it aint happening. Pelfrey is the only guy i have faith in doing that but he only hits cody ross.
I dont want the mets to get manny to shut up the phillies, i want them to get him so they can finally win a freaking world series since I was 1 last time they did. Manny added to our lineup gives us the best in the NL and maybe all of MLB.
DWRIGHT,
YOU’RE RIGHT ABOUT NOT GETTING MANNY ” JUST TO SHUT THE PHILLIE’S UP ” HOWEVER, THIS WOULD BE ONE OF THE BY PRODUCT’S OF SIGNING THE BADDEST RIGHT HANDED HITTER IN ALL OF BASEBALL ARGUABLY IN BASEBALL HISTORY.
I propose we, Mets fans, only refer to Cole Hamels as a female. From her long hair, to her slender appearance, to her high pitched voice, Hamels really is in a league of her own. Don’t get me wrong, she is one heck of a pitcher who was clutch this last year, but she can’t disrespect us like that and get away with it.
DWRIGHT,
THIS IS MY PREVIOUS POST AS TO WHY I THINK THE METS SHOULD GET MANNY.
WE CAN ELIMINATE ALL DISCUSSION ABOUT WHO IS GOING AFTER WHO IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST, AND HOW DOES THAT AFFECT US ETC BY SIGNING THE ONE MAN THAT WILL TURN OUR LINEUP INTO A JUGGERNAUT….. MANNY RAMIREZ.
NATIONAL LEAGUE PITCHER’S WILL BE ON THEIR HEELS FROM THE 1ST INNING,HIS NUMBER’S AND CONSISTENCY ARE ABSOLUTELY SICK, HIS ABILITY TO HIT IN THE CLUTCH AND GET ON BASE ARE WITHOUT PEER AND HE IS NOT SLOWING DOWN.
DON’T BE FOOLED BY THE ” HE’LL BE 37 ” CROWD THIS MAN IS THE GREATEST RBI MAN OF THIS GENERATION AND AS I’VE STATED BEFORE HE IS REGARDED BY MANY AS THE GREATEST RIGHT HANDED HITTER IN BASEBALL HISTORY, HIS NUMBERS ACROSS THE BOARD ARE ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING HANDS DOWN.
THE ENERGY HE’LL BRING TO OUR BALL CLUB WILL BE PHENOMENAL, THAT SAID, IT WON’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE ABOUT DYE GOING TO ATLANTA OR ANY OTHER SENARIO THAT MAY PLAY OUT BECAUSE WE WILL HAVE THE DOMINICAN MESSIAH AND A LINEUP FOR THE AGES.
on like donkey kong. I. Can. Not. Wait.
I guess a team that won the WS with bad umpiring and weather problems has a right to talk(thats the city fisrt title since ____b.c.) We are title town and thats why next season when we face them don’t be surprised if a ball or two go off target. Anyway when the Mets run through the National League, let the Phil’s try and talk….
Dave H –
Nicole Hamels?
Yes! Nicole Hamels. Please, Matt, make a post about this. This is very important. Defend our honor against her.
And that is why the 86 Mets won the Series and the 06-08 Mets have won nothing.
I dont see how manny would change this. I doubt he’d even realize someone said anything about him.

Yeah, if the Phillies could figure out how to fold in September they could be just like the Muts. The bottom line is your team has NO BALLS ! If Jimmy Rollins played in New York he would be GOD!
4SHOW,
10,000 LOSSES ?
2 WORLD SERIES IN 126 YRS ?
ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME ?
GET THE H.E.L.L. OFF MY BLOG !
He sounds like a little patsy to me…I really hope the Mets get someone to kick his a ss this year
Dear Coal Hamels,
You’re a few weeks early.
Regards.
We need some one like Bradley, he will just mop the floor with Hamels and Rollins at the same time.
Hey Buck, thats whats wrong with you Muts fans, you are living in the past. If it weren’t for the groundball going through Buckner’s legs, you whiners would be talking about the 69 Muts. Come into the new millenium, Buck……your team has choked two years in a row, the Phillies are the defending World Champions and your team has NO BALLS !
MB4S, are you talking about the Phillies? The team with the most losses in the history of sports? And the same amount of titles in three times the amount of time? Phillies shouldn’t be talking s hit about any other team

Hey Garfios, Bradley wouldn’t mop the floor with anyone but his own teamates, he is nothing but a clubhouse cancer. But he’d look great in a Muts uniform ! LOL

So what? Guess who’s the first one to take it in the neck next season? LOL (I can’t wait.!)
4SHOW,
HOLD ON MY PHONE IS RINGING……
IT’S JOE CARTER, HE WANT’S TO SPEAK WITH YOU.
metsblow4show _ how can u count last year as a choke when we fired our manager half-way through the season?( We over-achieved since when do people think that when u get rid of your manager you’ re gonna do better?) Yet again your city can’t not be at our higher levelWere a winning city. This is title town, players go here to be in the spot light. Last time i checked no one really talks about a city that rarely does anything. Remember in 2006 when Rollins said they were the team to beat, what happened?( they became the team to beat beat and beat) go troll somewhere else…..
this team would NOT do anything in a way of a response to those comments. i agree totally with hamels, the mets choked two years in a row and unless they don’t in 2009 nothing wll change. which is why i say bring in manny
4show
You obviously don’t know your history. If Buckner caught the ball and recorded the out it would have simply ended the inning as the Mets had already tied the game on a wild pitch. Care to enlighten us with any more ignorance?
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! This is the same Cole Hamels that just loses it every time he faces the Mets! The mets pitchers don’t need to throw hard in the Phillies faces, they should do what they did last year….PUMMEL THEM INTO THE GROUND! The record speaks for itself.
You’ll have a hard time calling Cole Hamels a choke-artist considering he was NLCS and WS MVP.
The only way to fight back against this is to win the division next year.
lcs487- your right I forgot about that in my rant lol. Its funny cause he feels his team is best when heads up they lost to us, reminds me of Yankee fans…….
Mariners: You had a mistake in your last post. Rollins called the Phils the team to beat in 2007 when they won the division… not in 2006.
What is really sad is the fact that the Phillies feel like they must always keep up with the METS, why is that? They won, good for them, lets move on. They cant get over it and while we are at it, The Braves made some comments as did the Marlins so to have 3 teams in your division trash talkin’ about you should be enough to motivate them. IF they dont win the division and the WS this year then all the talk is true amd they are choke artist, like the RED SOX, pre-2004. LETS GO METS !!!
Hamel’s statement is 100% accurate.
nice catch BullpenHelp my bad still after those comments were made they were the team to beat and beat. Also they didn’t win anything we gave it to them (the division was ours to lose)
“Also they didn’t win anything we gave it to them (the division was ours to lose)”
Aren’t you supporting what Hamels said?
u can’t suger coat 2007 but 2008 i dont believe was a choke cause we had our manager fired half way through the season. I stand firm on that they didn’t win the division that year we gave them the divison
What’s the big deal? the guy is right. We choked 2 years in a row.
The phillies should open a hardware store for all the tools that are on that team. My Question is why would a New York team based radio station allow these tools on the air? It’s the off season and instead of making deals and everything else that goes on in the off season all they could think about is the New York Mets. Jealous much? My favorite part of all this is how when the hardware store did win at their victory parade all they could mention was of course the Mets and how it takes more than one person to win for them. Meanwhile the biggest tool of them all in Hammels was the only one productive enough to give them the win. No matter what or how they win or don’t, the phillies will always be the red headed step child. I bet you this time next year no one will even remember who won this year. Your a weak flash in a very deep pan phillies and you know it.
What’s the big deal? The Mets ARE chokers and Hamels had a great season last year and won a championship. He can say anything he wants. How about instead exerting so much energy defending the Mets the team actually shuts up the Phillies themselves?
Dem’s fighting words, Champion Boy! Expect one in the neck! Oh snap, it’s December 11th. Nevermind.
On a side note, I saw Darryl Strawberry the other day hailing a cab at Herald Square. He looks great.
The Mets were better than the Phillies last season, having beaten them 11 out of 18. If you can only manage to beat your opponent 7 out of 18 matchups, that pretty much makes you the choke artists, not your opponent. Hamels should shut his mouth. The Mets beat the Phillies in 2008.
He’s absolutely right, the Mets, yes, especially these new era Mets are absolute CHOKE artists. From the NLCS till now, the season has ended with a choke job.
Lets face it. The mets ARE choke artists. They fall apart 1 year and its bad luck or tough breaks. 2 years in a row? thats choking. You Mets fans are so amusing though. You look right past the fact that it was a New York radio station that was interviewing Cole and the DJ was the FIRST ONE to mention the Mets choking. Cole just reiterated his question. So blame Cole and the Phillies all you want. For the last 2 years you have done nothing to show that you are capable of finishing a season strong. So enjoy your offseason and the bulletin board material that we gave you(again, you can pin it up next to a few JRoll comments) and please, next year when you face the Phillies you might want to bring a team thats actually ready to play.
Later chokers.
Over the last 12 games of the season in 2008, the Met offense averaged 5.1 runs per game. Their team totals in average, obp, and slugging at the end of the season were higher than what they were at the start of September.
Given those truths, you cant say the Met offense choked. The starting pitching was good, too,
Who choked are Aaron Heilman and Scot Shoenweiss, both of whom wont be in a Met uniform next season. To say the Mets collectively choked in 2008 just isnt the case. If one or two guys out of the bullpen are losers that blow games, it doesnt make the entire team a bunch of chokers.
Just got on the site..I’m a huge Phillies fan. The Mets as a whole, didn’t choke. If you want to point fingers, you can OBVIOUSLY point to the bullpen. The Phillies got hot when the Mets weren’t getting the job done. At the beginning of the season, you guys looked better, just as you currently will at the beginning of next season.
true about just a few guys “choking”, although it was more like physically unable to get the job done. Just cause you lose doesn’t mean you choke.
cause/effect isn’t always clear.
But, the Phils should enjoy the trophy. Just don’t count on another one.
Last year, damn near everything possible that could go right did. Health, breaks, guys played well above their heads. Even playoff matchups.
could be interesting off season and next year though. Utley out 1/2 year, felix back surgery, burrell gone, BPs never all have great years back/back, Moyer?
pretty much the rest of the division, so far, is getting better, but the phils aren’t. not always a good sign!
stickguy & esovia, right on

A GREAT HITTER IS DEEMED A GREAT HITTER NOT BECAUSE HE HAD A GREAT YR,BUT HE’S HAD NUMEROUS GREAT YRS AS A RESULT OF CONSISTANCY OVER TIME.
IN 08 THE METS LOST THE DIVISION BY 3 GAMES AND MISSED THE PLAYOFFS ON THE LAST DAY OF THE SEASON.
IN 07 THEY LOST A LEAD OF 7 GAMES WITH 17 TO PLAY, THAT CONSTITUTES A CHOKE.
YOU CANNOT LABEL THE METS AS ” CHOKE ARTISTS ” BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOT DEVELOPED A REPUTATION AS SUCH,
HOWEVER, IF A TEAM LOST SAY, 10,000 GAMES AND WON SAY, 2 WORLD SERIES IN 126 YRS THAT MY FRIEND’S IS WHAT YOU CALL A ROCK SOLID REPUTATION IN ABISMAL FUTILITY.
SO, BEFORE ANY OF YOU PATHETIC CHEEZEWIZ EATING LITTLE DROID’S DEVOID OF ANY REAL BASEBALL SENSE WANT TO COME ON MY BLOG AND TALK SMACK ABOUT MY TEAM I SUGGEST YOU GO BACK TO WATCHING THE MOVIE YOU JUST PAUSED “INVINCIBLE” AND STOP WASTING OUR TIME AND SPACE.
I dunno – I just don’t buy the argument that the Phillies are obsessed with the Mets or wannabes or jealous. I am a Mets fan, yes, but I am first a sports fan, and believe in sportsmanship. Rivalries are part of every sport, and the Phils WS victory must be so much sweeter to them because EVERYONE picked the Mets to win the division, in both 07 and 08. Face it — they took it from us.
Nor do I think they have a reputation because of 10k losses (different teams in different eras) Today’s generation of Phillies fans deserve to have nothing but pride in their team. I hope to have the same pride soon for my team.
METSME,
I HEAR WHAT YOU’RE SAYING BUDDY, IT’S JUST THAT PHILLIE NATION INVADES THE SITE WANTING TO PUSH OUR BUTTONS AND THE COMPULSION TO RESPOND IS INEVITABLE.
Being as big a Met fan as anyone it has been hard to watch the Mets not get it done in September, choke if you will. That being said, Hamels should have watched himself before opening his mouth. To be talking to WFAN the Mets radio station and talk trash isn’t a smart thing to do. I just hope this will spark the current Mets and give them some heart and team pride which they seem to lack. I thought the comments made by rollins in 07′ where going to do the same but we all know what happened that season. stil LET’S GO METS!!!
Can we please STOP with the whole “the mets have no balls” crap?! Come on people! Just because you build a good team doesn’t mean it will execute as such on the field! The Mets didn’t choke in 2008 because they blew it earlier in the year and rebuilt their team to the extent where even WITH the injuries, and the issues that surrounded this team this year….it STILL finished 2.5 games away from the Phillies. And that’s fine, the Phillies can talk all they want….that’s all they seem to know how to do, and do well. They won the WS fair and square and deserve the accolades, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of the Mets. Remember, this team was at NUMBER FOUR at one point of the season, rocketed up to number 1 and slipped in September….big deal. It happens people….you’re a mets fan like I am….those things happen to us!

Your last paragraph is very well said. I think many Mets fans like to brag about the 10,000 losses and such. However, this is a whole new generation of Phillies fans and we are an elite team.
As for the subject of this post, Hamels was indeed egged on to make those comments. As a true Phillies fans, I’ll be the first to tell you that Hamels is very cocky. For example, he’s said in public a few times that he believes he’ll pitch no-hitters and win Cy Young awards during his career.
Anyway, I think this adds fuel to the fire, which is great for the rivalry. No, the Phillies aren’t preoccupied with the Mets… but we do enjoy rubbing it in. It’s the nature of a good rivalry. Mets will have a chance to respond in 2009.
Remember, Mets fans, when it comes down to it… this is baseball. Let’s have some fun. Trash talking, included.

“oh and anyone who is hoping for someone on the mets to drill somebody, or have a ball “slip”. it aint happening. Pelfrey is the only guy i have faith in doing that but he only hits cody ross.”
Pelf also threw at Elijah Dukes, and even if he didn’t mean to, he walked right up towards Elijah as Elijah was approaching him. And Elijah Dukes is one of the scariest guys in the world. I have an endless amount of respect for the Big Pelf after that.
Johan, although a wonderful pitcher, I don’t think will bean somebody. I remember a game where Santana threw one high and hard at Tim Hudson and Hudson made a small move toward the mound and Johan flinched. I don’t see him as a guy who will throw at somebody or start a fight. Johan seems like a quiet, professional, modest superstar. I also remember John Maine putting one in somebodies numbers to start off a game where there was some tension from the night before.
Milton Bradley could be interesting. Despite his “image”, he always seems liked by his team and he would not stand for this crap. He also happens to be a tremendous hitter.
This head to head thing is kind of silly.
Many times an also ran can win a season series against a better team-that’s why they play 162 games.
Here are teams that were ‘better’ than the 08 Mets by that standard…
Atlanta Braves (11-7)
Houston Astros (5-2)
San Diego Padres (5-2)
Seattle Marines (2-1)
As for the Phillies ‘only’ talking about the Mets at their parade-completely false. They talked about the Mets, Brewers, Dodgers and Rays-amazingly enough, all the teams they beat along the way…
HAMMELS IS RIGHT – HE WON THE WORLD SERIES, WE CHOKED TWO YEARS IN A ROW (THREE IF YOU COUNT LOSING TO AN INFERIOR CARDINALS TEAM) AND WE’RE STILL A BUNCH OF IDIOTS. WE WIN THIS YEAR, WE CAN KILL HIM FOR HIS COMMENTS. UNTIL THEN, THIS IS THE PUNISHMENT WE TAKE FOR BEING SIMPLY A BAD TEAM,
Another fact check for anyone who claims the 2008 Phils were lucky in their postseason opponents:
Mets in 06 faced a NLDS opponent with 2 fewer wins than the 2008 Brewers (who added CC to make them more formidable than they were in the first half) and an NLCS opponent with one less win than the 08 Dodgers (who added MannyR. to their squad).
(And the Rays had a better record than 06’s Tigers too-but that doesn’t matter since Mets missed the WS despite the easier road…)
bucknersankles, if manny gets on the team all it will cause is team descention. The problem with the Mets are they have to many latin players. Latin players have big ego’s and are almost impossible to coach. They throw temper tantrums. Look at Reyes. I have seen him on numerous occasions strike out, not like the call, and go into the field and not take groundballs for warmups. You have to be mentally tough in this game as well as physically tough. You also have to be able to buy into the fact that everyone on your team is there to achieve the same goal and when the time comes to m
