Quote: Putz is Happy to join K-Rod and Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 11, 2008 1:20 am

According to our friend Joel Lipsky, following tonight’s press conference, Omar Minaya was asked if it will be a problem asking J.J. Putz to be a set-up man, to which he responded, “If it is, that’s a good problem to have.”

That said, in a report for the Seattle Times, Geoff Baker quotes Putz as saying:

“It’s a new challenge and I’m excited about it… I’m going to a new team that’s going to be very competitive.  Francisco Rodriguez is a great closer and with Sean Green going as well, we should have a great bullpen.”

i believe this is what i meant when i said last week that the Mets were aiming to build, ‘A Team of Closers,’ and i like it

Minaya later told reporters that the deal to bring Putz to the Mets had been in the works for a few weeks, ‘but finally came together this afternoon.’

Minaya suggested to reporters that people stop questioning his team’s farm system, given that it has delieverd Johan Santana and Putz over the last two off-seasons.

Lastly, Minaya said, ‘We’re not done,’ as he will continue to improve his team’s roster for 2009.

    go omar

  2. nydre78 says:

Maybe Omar might deal Putz to St. Louis for Ankiel?

  3. ravin108 says:

No matter what Putz’s agent says, I think he will be happy coming to a contending team. Whether he is closing games or setting up, he will still get offered top dollar when his contract expires if he puts up solid #s.

Matt, can you or Toby at the tell us about the minor leaguers traded away because the only one I’m familiar with is Carp.

  4. Meddler says:

There’s some rumor that Takashi Saito might get non-tendered. How would everyone feel about three closers? lol.

  5. nym989989 says:

    geeeeeet r’ done Omar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Coolpapabell says:

Well done Omar. Now lets see what happens with the rotation and Castillo. I can’t wait to see his next magic trick.

  7. professor met says:

great coverage of all this, matt. Going to bed now but I hope to wake up to some info regarding the two other players we’ve received with putz. I’ve never heard of them.

  8. Meddler says:

ravin108, Cleto is somewhat intriguing. He can bring the heat, supposedly touching the high 90s as a 19 year old. But like so many arms in the Mets system, the fastball is all he has. His command was decent but he didn’t punch a ton of guys out, although I hear he generated lots of grounders. He’ll have decent upside because of the fastball, but for now, IMO, his ceiling looks something like Eddie Kunz but a few years younger.

Carrera’s also a little bit interesting and looks like he could develop into a utility outfielder type. Good speed (28/9 SB/CS in 114 games in 2008), limited power. If he plays a decent CF, he looks like a solid 4th outfielder in the future. If he could draw just an extra walk here and there, he might become a fringe everyday CF prospect.

  9. Fudbutter says:

Met fans have been calling for JJPutz for years. I even remember people yelling out his name when Doug Sisk pitched and JJ was only 7 years old or so

  10. The Slider says:

Does anybody know if Matt Wise still under contract?

  11. Deaner says:

no. he signed a one year deal.

  12. losmets57 says:

    Matt Wise is a FA.

  13. jaydh says:

    Sho-Feliciano-Stokes-Sanchez-Stokes-Putz-KRod

  14. jaydh says:

    whoops

  15. jaydh says:

    supposed to be parnell

  16. domosnacks5 says:

    To nydre

I was thinking the same thing. I saw somewhere that the Cards offered Ankiel for Putz earlier today. Once I saw we did that deal, the first thing that came to mind was “might we flip him for Ankiel”?

I like the trade regardless. I hate to see Smith go, but we got fair value for him while losing Heilman at the same time.

Just glad I didn’t get that custom-made Joe Smith jersey back in July… lol.

  17. MetsFan21 says:

If there are issues with Putz accepting his role, one possibility is hope that he is healthy in the first half of the season, lights out numbers… and see if we can fill some more holes by trading Putz later in the season.

  18. MetsFan21 says:

On second thought, I guess this means Huston Street stays put or do the Rockies want Nick Evans and a lefty (Feliciano or Schoenweis)?

  19. eduardosmets says:

i like this trade but i read what ken rosenthal said that kunz agent said he is not happy being a setup man and that he most likly will leave after this season in free agency and sign somewhere else to be a closer so as much as i love this deal i really hope he doesnt leave i mean hes going to ahve to get value this season to get money through free agency next offseason so that only means a good year for kunz this season but is the mets ready to kunz closer type money for a setup man a man of his caliber i say yes but i really hope he doesnt want to leave to be a closer himself im going to miss joe smith especially alot more if kunz leaves next year but for now i wont complain and enjoy what kunz brings us next year and if this is his 1 and only year with us its time for minaya to think about that and get the players this team needs to win a world series this season if kunz is going to leave us the year after

  20. nydre78 says:

    Yeah Domo,

I was told I should be permanantly banned for making such a horrible comment lol. At least someone agrees with me.

Putz has already said he is fine with being a setup guy for K-Rod. But what I was saying before is if Putz truly did not want to be the setup man, he could have been dealt for Ankiel. Ankiel is a good hitter, as good as Ibanez, yet doesnt cost as much. Like you said Domo, St. Louis tried making this deal with Seattle just the other day.

But Putz is happy with the deal so whatever :-)

  21. Deaner says:

if it’s a club option, and he does well, then he’s not leaving

if he doesnt do well, he won’t get much money

  22. zen says:

you are out of your mind if you think the mets are trading putz for ankiel:

    1. the mets need putz very badly. he fills their greatest need from the last two season
    2. who is going to pitch in the bullpen? ankiel?
    3. that’s a terrible trade

  23. Meddler says:

Its a club option, but its almost $9 million, which is very pricey for a setup man. Even if Putz has a nice year, I could see the Mets declining and offering him arbitration instead. I do like the Ankiel thought, but I don’t think Putz gets traded, not right now anyway. What I could see is at the deadline, some team losing their closer and making a ridiculous offer for Putz. If the Mets bullpen is performing well, especially if there’s any sign of Duaner Sanchez’s arm coming back to life or legit development in Kunz or Parnell, dangling Putz at the deadline, when there aren’t a million other closers available, might make some sense.

  24. Meddler says:

Ankiel’s become a nice hitter zen, but I agree, it doesn’t make sense right now. There’s no reason to tinker with the outfield, the Mets have just enough budget room to pick up an SP, and if they feel they really need it, likely enough talent on the farm to trade for another. That’s where the need is right now. Murphy, Beltran, Church is a nice outfield, and having Tatis to platoon with whichever corner guy struggles more to hit lefties, I feel quite comfortable.

  25. Deaner says:

or they could exercise the option and trade him

he def. gives the mets flexibility this year and next

  26. kingman 26 says:

nydre, the being banned comment was a joke, but have you looked at Ibanez’s career vs Ankiel’s? This is a VERY silly thing to suggest….

Putz is going nowhere except the CitiField bullpen.

  27. The Slider says:

I read on the Mariners blog that they liked Sean Green and were sorry to see him go. It appears that he is a pretty decent reliever.

  28. CaseStreet says:

kingman, I knew you’d start talking about Ibanez sooner or later.

  29. gomets6091 says:

I love this trade. If Putz even comes close to his ‘07 or even ‘06 numbers, he’s an absolute steal. Him and Frankie should be one of the better 8th-9th combos in the league, which is quite an upgrade from what we had, to say the least. I wouldn’t mind seeing us pick up a starter, and I have a wet dream that Trevor Hoffman decides he wants to win a ring and signs with us for fairly cheap despite not being able to close, giving us the best bullpen in the league. Unlikely, yes, but you never know (I call it the Ray Allen effect).

Also, I would love love love Omar to forget about Raul Ibanez and go get Adam Dunn, who will likely be cheaper, won’t cost us a draft pick, and is a better baseball player.

  30. The Slider says:

Imagine, if you will, Ladies and Gentleman, Billy Wagner coming back in late August or by September, just in time to help us nail down the NL East and help us win the World Series.

We’ll then have three of baseballs best closers on our team!!!

    Bwhahahahahaha.

  31. Meddler says:

Green was apparently quite solid until the second half of 2008, when he put up an ERA over 8.00. But before then he’d been solid. He has a pretty significant platoon split though, but that’s less significant now. With Putz pitching before the 9th, you can use your specialists more effectively, limiting them against opposite handed batters and not exposing them to so many high leverage situations.

So this is the pen now I guess:

    CL – K-Rod
    SU – Putz
    MR – Sanchez
    MR – Feliciano
    MR – Shoeneweis
    MR – Green
    MR – Kunz/Parnell/Figueroa

Your still hinging quite a bit on whether Sanchez can find some life in his arm or the development of Kunz and Parnell, but this is a much, much better unit than we ended the year with. But is it that much better than what we expected from Wagner, Heilman and Smith instead of K-Rod, Putz, and Green?

  32. MetsFan21 says:

Mets can do way better than Rick Ankiel… Skip Schumaker is one I’d rather have over Ankiel… I still wonder if they is any movement on the Huston Street talks or is he staying put with the Rockies.

  33. MH says:

Hmmm We trade one pitcher who’s unhappy with his role to get another for a role his agent says he doesn’t want…Do you suppose Omar will flip Putz for Street?

Sorry to see Endy in this trade. Was he a deal breaker? I always felt good knowing he was there to provide great defense and play little ball when we needed him…

  34. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Theres no way we flip Putz to get Street unless we get …wait you know what there is no unless. Putz is not going anywhere except CitiField this summer to be part of the best late inning tandem we have seen since maybe Rivera/Wetteland. They have a chance to be better than those two if they both stay healthy.

  35. Jay says:

Great job Omar! I love also that this was a good ol fashioned trade, and not just throwing money at a problem.

  36. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Omar has done an ausome job thus far and I am happy to hear him say he isnt done yet. He cant be done yet. We have a few needs still and I hope he does the following:
-Sign Chad Cordero to an incentive laden minor league deal.
    -Sign either Perez or Garland
-Trade Castillo and Feliciano to Arizona for Eric Byrnes (rumored deal)
-Trade Delgado to Texas for Salty
-Sign Adam Dunn to play 1B
-Sign Orlando Hudson to play 2B
-Trade Schneider to the Red Sox for some minor leaguers to free up cash
We then have some team for Opening Day.

  37. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

    Agree completely. Great job Omar.

Moving Heilman was critical. Getting value back for him….brilliant!

Granted we had to include Endy (a true Mets hero, who will be missed terribly) and Smith (a nice homegrown surprise) as well.

My one question is if Putz had a physical. He was on DL twice last year. Seems like he was breaking down. I hope he is not broken.

My second question. If we bring kids to the stadium will we be forced to have discussions with them, especially if we have Eddie come up, with Kunz in the 7th and Putz in the 8th.

Also big salute to Heilman, Endy and Smith, I wish them all well. And a soft spot for Endy who gave us one of the best plays I have ever seen with “the Catch”. I understand the walls at Citifield are much higher (so high that even Super Endy could not leap them in a single bound), perhaps that is why we were willing to include him. Good luck gentlmen!

  38. Burn_Philly_Down says:

Anyone hear about the nats offering Tex 7 years 160 mil? Just saw it on espn.

  39. Troy says:

J.J, Welcome to New York ~~

    Let’s go Mets !!!

    Our season has come!

  40. phuck da phills says:

i can see it now. I’m getting giddy just thinking about it. I can hear ir now in Gary Cohen ecstatic voice, “big Pelf goes a stellar 7 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits. Striking out 5 while only walking 1. And Putz is coming in for the 8th, strikes out the side against the Phils, while Rodriguez is warming up for the ninth.

Thank you Omar. Very well done. I never doubted you for one minute. Now if we could just resign Ollie it’ll be a wrap.

    PUT IT IN THE BOOKS!

    LETS GO METS

  41. Starr247 says:

A week ago I was hopeful with the Winter Meetings approaching and now I am downright giddy. With K-Rod closing and Putz setting it up for him, the problems of last year’s bullpen are quickly becoming a memory.

Add in the fact that Saito from the Dodgers may be non-tendered and/or Cordero could get a serious look and the bullpen could become a true monster for the team.

And as others have been saying, what if Wagner does make it back before the Sept. 1 playoff roster deadline? Could you see this bullpen in October next year?

    CL – KRod
    SU – Putz
    SU – Saito
    SU – Wagner
    MR – Green
    MR – Sanchez
    MR – Feliciano
    MR – Schoenweis or Parnell

    I think that would spell…………..
    W-O-R-L-D C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N-S!

  42. marylandmet says:

“What a Putz!” just became a compliment.

    Omar, excellent trade.

    Matthew, excellent coverage.

  43. m29w_12789 says:

Need a good long man ala Darren Oliver, I would also like to see a lights out 7th inning guy – I would take a shot at Chad cordero. I still want to see Sho and Felicano seeing the exit sign.

  44. HereWeegoAgain says:

Things are looking up……………..Hope Omar’s not done with the big splashes yet. Still money available…..put it to good use!

  45. Metfreak says:

Nice Job so far Omar lets not stop .This must of been that addition by subtraction the owner was talking about with the amount of guys going I think this was a good move

  46. stickguy says:

    good start to the pen.

one thing though, for all the speculative lineups, is correcting another huge problem from last year.

You can (will) have 1 of schoe or Feliciano. Not both. Too many specialists.

Man, it would be nice to get another legit set up guy (guardado?) to finish off the pen.

    K Rod
    putz
    Green
    Guardadao?
    schoe/feliciano (pick em)
    parnell
    sanchez

That looks just a tad better than last year.

  47. HOFMets57 says:

Boy, the NY Post is going to have a field day every time Putz pitches with corny headliners…

  48. HOFMets57 says:

And THIS is the bullpen we have so far…

    CL K-Rod
    SU Putz
    MR Sanchez/Parnell
    MR Feliciano
    MR Schoeneweis
    MR Green/Kunz
    LM Stokes

Depending on how well they perform in Spring Training, Kunz and/or Parnell might be able to wrestle a Major League spot from Duaner and/or Sean Green…

  49. therealsince86 says:

Here is the dream pen I want that easily still could happen
    Krod
    Putz
    Guardado
    Cordero
    Stokes
    Feliciano/Show
    Green

Now that’s a pen. And Guardado and Cordero should both be cheap and short term.

  50. just-mlb says:

It’s possible that Sanchez gets traded with some prospects and Feliciano or Show for Street

Is it possible that people kill the “Omar favors Latinos” talk now?

We trade away one of the most popular Met players on the roster who is also Latino, a couple of Latino prospects for 3 guys who are as Hispanic as Ralph Kramden

Can we just trust Omar has the teams best interest in mind?

  51. beltran the warrior says:

great trade by mr. minaya. giving up virtually nothing to get a bona fide setup man. there is no downside here.

jeremy reed is going to become a key cog in this trade. a very good defensive outfielder who can hit better than endy ever could. if omar could ever find a way to pry ankiel from the cards, i would do it in a heartbeat.

  52. Mel Rojas says:

Well we know where the Pierre rumors came from. Jeremy Reed must not have been in the deal until recently nd omar was probably trying to have pierre play the endy role. now jeremy reeds that guy

  53. GregB says:

“…i believe this is what i meant when i said last week that the Mets were aiming to build, ‘A Team of Closers,’ and i like it…”

we need a team of closers in every sense of the word.

  54. MetsfanfromnybutinSC says:

He should be happy to join our world series team and do his part in it. Keep doing your thing Omar!

  55. therealsince86 says:

Ok so this may have been answered last night but we traded 7 guys and 5 of them were on the 40 man roster. We got back 3 so who moves on to the 40 man?

  56. Prismo says:

realsince – rule 5 draft players perhaps?

  57. jag32009 says:

this is a great job by omar going out and getting 2 great relievers filling the team’s most pressing need. i dont see an ankiel deal going down though. the mets simply dont need another left hand hitting OF. they have church and murphy already out there and while getting either ibanez or ankiel would be nice, it is not as important as filling the bullpen needs beause there is already an influx of left handed bats in the middle of the order.

i’d rather keep putz and go out and get any combination of guys between street, cordero, and guardado and get scho out of here. after heilman, scho was the one guy i could not stand seeing blow games so i’d like to see him in a deal for someone.

  58. Mel Rojas says:

If putz has to close for any reason, is there a doubt in anyones mind that the headlines are gonna be “PUTZ IT IN THE BOOK!!”

  59. therealsince86 says:

    Good point.
You know the funny thing is out of all the guys traded I am most upset about Vargas. I really thought he had potential to be a #5 starter and those are expensive these days.

  60. Prismo says:

I see the Mets signing one more reliever and a starter, and that being pretty much it for the offseason.

Castillo will start at second and we’ll have a Murphy/Tatis platoon in left field.

    Rotation of Santana/Pelf/Maine/FreeAgent/Niese

  61. therealsince86 says:

I wonder if Seattle would have thrown in Washburn? I could have seen him being a very valuable #5 starter this year and the fact that it would have been a 1 year deal would have been even better.

  62. lil pelf says:

    and manny!

  63. stickguy says:

1 more RP (lyon, guardado, someone like that ) and the rest of the pen will be settled onin ST.

Or, great time for a young hard throwing rule 5 guy who could be stashed as the 7th man, who won’t (hopefully!) be getting tons of work.

I agree with TRS that they should snag Rivera for the OF. If nothing else, it gives protection in case Church goes down again.

Other than that, i would still love to see an upgrade at C, and 2B, but if it doesn’t happen, shouldn’t be a crisis.

Guess Omar can go look for a SP now?

Sign say sheets, and pretty much the rest is fine tuning.

  64. Mel Rojas says:

I still think Church could be on the move for a guy like edwin jackson or andy sonnanstine. Or maybe Omar puts together a deal including Church Evans prospects for both of them. Thats a pretty cheap way to fill out the bottom of your rotation. Then you can add a guy like abreu or ibanez. or hoooopefully manny

  65. therealsince86 says:

Mel Jacson went to the Tigers and I don’t think Sonnanstine will be traded now.

There are 3 players I would still like to trade
Castillo – duh but not happening
Schnieder – really interested in what the Rsox would give.
Feliciano/Show – so we could sign Guardado.

  66. Mel Rojas says:

oh just heard about the Joyce for jackson trade. Man, I bet Church and and Evans gets that deal done for either sonnanstine or jackson

  67. jag32009 says:

mets need some help at the back end of the rotation and with the padres putting a deadline on a peavy deal getting done with chicago, the mets could land jason marquis for very cheap. i dont like marquis very much but for an established veteran who could do a decent job as a #5 starter, i wouldnt mind seeing him come to the mets if a trade could get done for virtually nothing

  68. Mel Rojas says:

What do you guys think it would take to get delmon young?

  69. Mel Rojas says:

He fits the exact need the mets would have in the outfield. Righty, some speed, young, should develop power. Nice 6 batter

  70. therealsince86 says:

Agree on Marquis. Something like Marlon Anderson and a lower prospect should work if we take on all of his salary.

  71. cohen1333 says:

We know J.J. used to be a closer, so to make him happy I think he needs to have a closer’s nickname. I’m thinking “The Queensboro Bridge” because he’s the Bridge to K-Rod.

  72. Mel Rojas says:

keith law called Jeremy Reed a “a defensive specialist who makes a lot of contact but lacks power or patience” and then called Sean Green a “right-handed ground-ball machine”. So it seems Omar traded Heilman Endy Chavez and Joe Smith for JJ Putz Endy Chavez and Joe Smith…. I’ll take the direct swap of Heilman and Putz any day

  73. Peter says:

I love the deal, it has a chance to be the new Rivera to Wetteland.

I wouldn’t be surprised though, if the player we gave up who surprises most is Vargas. I had thought he could be a dark horse for the #5 spot this season.

Cohen – Queensboro Bridge is a great tag!

  74. nostradamus says:

good move omar. now SIGN MANNY to fix the offense!

  75. roman411 says:

Carp = Great bat, crap defense
    Vargas = So so
Endy = You will be missed (to an extent)
Smith = Go beat the Yanks

    I like the deal…a lot!

  76. stickguy says:

    vargas could be good.

really, Omar has a few key things to do quick, and will be mostly done (or at least until final tweaking in ST).

add 1 more legit set up guy (guardado)
add 1 RH power bat (molina or Rivera), if not both.
    add a SP (sheets)
get a MI/utility guy (like Punto)

Unless he is going big ( a real overhaul, like trading Delgado), tha covers the core needs.

The 5th starter most likely gets resolved in ST. Or he gets a stop gap like marquis for cheap.

  77. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

I don’t think Jason Marquis is a good idea…one he’s nothing special and two the cubs have to move him to get Peavy..do we really want to help them do that?

  78. alex242 says:

Very nice trade for omar.. now, get to work on sheets and i’m wondering if we traded our “future” first basement where does that leave delgado? is he next? i really hope so..

  79. sellitman says:

The deal is a good one but I will really miss Chavez.

  80. alex242 says:

no to marquiz.. but if we have to so we can fill our #5 spot so be it.. regardless the cubs won’t need 5 super starters in the playoffs.. 4 very solid ones win you the championship.. of course ankle by an ace..

  81. Mel Rojas says:

I’d only trade for Marquis if we could dump Marlon anderson on them for him. And he has to be the 5th spot competitor with niese. Not 4th. trade anderson for marquis and sign sheets 2 year 22 mil.

  82. Mel Rojas says:

I think Omar might not want marquis because he doesnt want the cubs to have Peavy. Think about it from a playoff standpoint. if the mets play the cubs in the first round do ou really wanna go up against peavy, harden, zambrano? i know the mets dont.

  83. darknova says:

Wow, I had no time to check the news at all after leaving work yesterday and I come in this morning to read this! Well done, Omar. I’ll miss Joe Smith, I really like that kid, but whatever needs to be done to fix this pen should be done. It was definitely time for Endy to go, but I’ll still miss seeing his defense.

The past couple days almost have me on the cusp of being cautiously optimistic about next season. Hopefully Omar can finish fixing the holes in the team.

  84. therealsince86 says:

Guys to look at in the Rule 5 today
Corey Wimberly. Could fit in the Awful Reyes slot. Lots of potential as a utility man. Had a .370 OBP in AA this season with 59 SB’s. Played most of his games at 2B but has played 2B, SS, 3B, CF, RF, and LF. Nice. Our own version of Amegaza.
Evereth Cabrea SS/2B who like Wimberly had a good OBP and is incredibly fast, stealing 73 SB last year.
Zach Kroenke: Young LHRP in Yankee’s organization. Had good numbers in AA and AAA last season.
Eduardo Morlan: Lots of good K numbers in the minors.
    Luis Perdomo
    192 K’s in 158 Innings with a WHIP 1.04

None of these guys would most likely stick, but what does it hurt to try any of them?

  85. therealsince86 says:

According to ESPN’s Steve Phillips, the Red Sox and Diamondbacks are having discussions about swapping Julio Lugo for Josh Byrnes. Lugo would play second base for Arizona, while Byrnes would be Boston’s fourth outfielder. Lugo has $18MM left on his deal, Byrnes $22MM with no-trade protection.

Why can’t we turn this into Castillo some how? Please? Throw in Evans or something.

  86. Mel Rojas says:

you mean eric byrnes right? And yea i agree with you thatd make much more sense

  87. Mel Rojas says:

for the mets to do that

  88. stickguy says:

TRS, a rule 5 guy like the ones you listed actually makes sense.

low cost (sicne the budget is gettting stretched for the pen). And a MI defensive replacement guy and the 7th guy in the pen (preferably a lefty that can do mop up duty) aren’t going to get lots of PT or be particularly important (hopefully!)

A Reyes was so bad, any minor leaguer should do that job. And if someone like wimberly or carbrera actaully blossoms, you cold end up with your Castillo replacement for chump change. This year, next year, whenever.

would mostly be needed for defensive replacement and/or pinch running duties.

  89. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

    Real,
That would be quite a deal if the Dbacks traded their GM.

    Just busting your balls.

  90. therealsince86 says:

LOL that’s what I get for copy and pasting without really reading the article. No wonder Steve Phillips works for ESPN.

  91. Dirtysanchez says:

good job omar. Cleaned up a bit of clutter in our bullpen and got a closer for the 8th. Now time to focus on SP.

  92. therealsince86 says:

I really see no danger in bringing in one of those 2 2B to compete with Awful Reyes as the backup IF. If we get something better we still lose nothing. Maybe even we see some potential and trade a nothing prospect to keep him in AAA.

  93. vic79 says:

How could any Met fan look at this as a bad deal?

Their problem was the pen and now they hve 2 of the BEST…….I mean Putz and KRod……..holy crap

who cares they dealt 7 bodies…….just break it down

    They get

    Putz- GREAT pitcher
    Lowe- descent middle reliever
    Reed- alot of potential

    They lose

Smith- only guy i will miss but they got Putz
Heilman- should do well but had to leave the Mets
Chavez- Reed is a younger option so thats a wash
Vargas- would of been in the minors, no biggie
2 minor league A ballers- whatever
Carp- Descent prospect but Murphy and Evans are there so whatever

Essentially the only real MLB roster moves for this yr are:

    Putz replaces Smith- no brainer
Lowe replaces Heilman- after last yr that is fine with EVERY Met fan
Reed replaces Chavez- thanks for the memories

  94. hot stove chef says:

I might be the one Mets fan who is still on the fence about the Putz trade.

    1) We now have about 23 million devoted to two relief pitchers. If we had made the deal with Putz before signing K-Rod, we could probably have used the K-Rod money to go after a top of the rotation SP like Lowe or Burnett.

    2) I think the Mets now have the best 8 & 9 inning pitchers in the league, but good 8th inning guys can be had much more cheaply. I for one believed that Niese would have been great in this role (similar to Wainright) for a year or two. Again the mets could have used that money to strengthen the Rotation.

  95. Mel Rojas says:

how could you not like this deal. Endy Chavez= Jeremy Reed. Joe Smith= Sean Green. JJ Putz>>>>>>>>Heilman. And Carp is road blocked by Evans and Murphy and Vargas is apparently perrenially out of shape.

  96. darknova says:

    Hot Stove Chef:
Think about it this way: Putz adds insurance for us in the event that KRod gets hurt (knock on any wood-like surface in my cube). We don’t need a repeat of this year’s closer situation.

  97. Mel Rojas says:

Yeah i think the mets should get involved in this eric byrnes talk. Lugo and Castillo are the same age, do the same things, both have 18 million owed to them. THe only thing is castillo has one extra year. Which may not be considered a bad thing by the dbacks because it saves them 3 million this year in comparison to lugos 9 mil.

  98. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

    hot stove…..seriously??!!

in 24 hours Omar brought to queens two players that after 2007 most would say were 2 of the 3 best closers in baseball! This is not Huston Street or Juan Cruz we are talking about here. For 5.5 million (which is what juan cruz will cost) plus K-Rods contract the Mets have just shortened the game to 7 innings!

Not only that, but Sean Green is apparantly a very good ground ball pitcher and we now will have an early game tandem of green/feliciano like we had in ‘06. Jeremy Reed will come into games late for defense, so losing Endy is pretty much irrelevant.

Spending this money is not going to stop Omar from getting a starter.

This is a great day to be a Met fan!!

  99. hot stove chef says:

Darknova, I hear you. I agree that we needed that insurance. And it’s not that I don’t like the trade… I just look around the league at all the great YOUNG 8th inning guys that come up through a system (Capps, Marmol, etc.), or are moved from AA SP to ML RP (Heilman, Wainwright, Joba) or older converted starters in the mold of Stokes.

I feel like I would have been happier with Putz as the closer, Lowe as the #2 rotation, and getting a good cheap young option via trade (Heilman and Felciano for Street for example).

  100. kingman 26 says:

    Hotstove—

One Day This Team Will Kill Me has said it SO perfectly. A great day to be a Met fan..

And yes, good 8th inning guys can be had cheaper, but Putz has the potential to be a GREAT 8th inning guy…..very possibly—if as healthy as he was in 2006–2007—the best 8th inning guy since Mariano in 1996 when Wetteland was the Yanks’ closer.

And as Rojas says, heaven forbid a KRod injury, we very possibly might not miss a beat!

    Omar is El Rey!!

  101. vic79 says:

all right lets say 95% like this move but there is 5% that dont……….we will see on the field

I think Omar is going to make ALOT more moves

I can see Church being moved for a RH hitting RF

I also think there may be a fit in Detroit………a I dont want you any more type deal for each

    Robertson(5th starter)
    Thames- Platoon LF
    for
Andersonif/of- salary move, PH for Detroit
    Schoenweiss- Tigers need a Lefty
Sanchez- needs a change of scenery

Mets get a back end starter and platoon OF that can also play 1B..I think he goes well with Tatis on the bench………Reed can be the lefty PH with Anderson gone

Tigers get some relief help in a Lefty and Righty and a decent veteran lefty bat

    thoughts?

  102. hot stove chef says:

    O.D.T.T.W.K.M (long name dude)

I think this move MAY prevent us from getting a quality SP. If it takes 3-4 million per season out of the equation that we’re now devoting to a set-up man (and I emphasize “If”) then we’re moving farther down the quaity scale by pricing ourselves out of the market for some players. I mean there are always nice surprises to be found among some lower paid pitchers, and you can catch lightening in a bottle, but I would be more comfortable with signing a #2 or #3 quality starter, than resigning ourselves to #4 and #5 options.

  103. Mel Rojas says:

hot stove, K-Rods 26. So its not like we have a geezer at closer. Putz will probably stick around for two years and try to move back to be a closer unless hes content with being a set up man. Which isnt outlandish considering hes apparently a great clubhouse team guy. I think the mets make one more bullpen move. I would guess signing cordero.

  104. Dirtysanchez says:

yes it is expensive the tag team of krod and putz but that may make the difference in ALOT of games we could have won last year and the year before that. We are entering a new era in met baseball. Omar just needs to finish the job and get a good SP, preferably 2 SP and work out the offense.

  105. hot stove chef says:

Ok Steve Fcasni just schooled me on the contracts of Putz and the backloaded K-Rod contract. I’m ok now.

  106. vic79 says:

    Wise is a FA

as of now the pen has

    Rodriguez(closer)
    Putz(set up)

    Lower( ground ball specialist)
    Feliciano (lefty specialist)

    Stokes (long man)

    Schoenweis
Sanchez ( who i both expect gone real soon)

I would think Kunz is looked at but probably in AAA to start and called up later

I also think Ayala will be brought back by Minaya cause he likes the guy and he would fit in the 6th inning too

if they deal Scho I imagine they go after one more Lefty for the pen too

So I think 5 are set and they will bring back Ayala, get a lefty FA for a descent price or by dealing Sanchez and Scho……….

  107. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Anyone hear on the news this morning that John Smoltz said he wanted to either go to the Mets or Red Sox?

  108. therealsince86 says:

The trade last night did not cost us any more money. The players sent salaries add up to what we brought back in with in 1-2 million. So it does not keep us from getting our starter or other needs.

  109. therealsince86 says:

Who is the Lower/Lowe guy that we keep getting in the trade? Are you trying to send a message to Omar or something? We got Sean Green not some guy named Lowe.

  110. JoseReyesForPresident says:

where are the bashers that say minaya only goes for latin players ??? none are latin so can we stop that?

  111. scmetsfan says:

It’s about time we got rid of Heilman. I can’t believe that that many teams were interested in him. One more starter to get to this bullpen and things are looking up.

  112. Mel Rojas says:

Im happy for heilman that he got the hell out of NY. He needed it. Now he’s in Seattle where no one pays attention so he’ll probably have a good year.

if the mets carry 7 relievers I would imagine itll look something like this.

    C- K-Rod
    SU- Putz
MRP-Cordero- probably 1 year incentive deal
    MRP-Sanchez
    MRP-Feliciano
    MRP- Green
    LR- Stokes

    Sho on way out.
    Ayala might stay for 8

  113. I’m glad to hear that Putz is okay with being a setup man, that he sees it as a new challenge, contrary to what his money-grubbing agent had to say.

Since it appears that Mets games will essentially be 7-inning games, we need to address the rotation. And i know that many are against it, but overpay for Lowe or Burnett and get one of them in here. If that fails, and it appears it will, bring Ollie back. I’d like to have Garland, too, but not to replace Perez, because he’s not better than Perez, i.e. not an upgrade.

  114. metz1 says:

it would be nice to lose schow and pick up a good lefty reliever.

  115. NYMets84 says:

Here’s how i see it. I’m a huge mets fan,and would love to see Burnett in a Met uniform has the 2nd starter then maybe Wolf has the 4th or 5th starter. That to me would be perfect-

    1-Santana
    2-Burnett
    3-Maine
    4-Wolf
    5-Pelfrey

To me, that’s a pretty solid rotation. But Burnett is to pricey after coming off his best season ever. So, i’d settle for Lowe. And some of you have ragged on Garland, he’s not much different then Perez, but he puts up better numbers except for ERA. And personally, perez needs to go. He’s had his time in NY and he’s shown the MLB that he can still somewhat pitch. Not like his glory season with Pitts., but he can still pitch. He needs to go, i’ll take Wolf or Garland as a 4th or 5th starter.

If anything, the trade would be good for the mets. They get a better starter than Perez. They dump Scotty S. All they would need to do after that is sign one more SP(Lowe/Wolf/Garland/Sheets), and shoot Feliciano, then the mets will have a solid starting rotation and a dependable bullpen.

The only thing that remains is what to do about Castillo?

  116. Cactus says:

Minaya really needs to get a grip.

First his ridiculous comment claiming victory (”You asked and I delivered!”) after two straight September collapses.

Now he says you can’t question his farm system because Santana fell into his lap and they used Heilman and Carp (two guys already here when he took over in 2005) to get Putz?

    The man is delusional.
