Bench: Mets look at Alex Cora for Utility Man
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 12, 2008 8:38 am

The Mets are pursuing free-agent Alex Cora to be their utility infielder, reports WEEI radio in Boston.

In 75 games for the Red Sox in 2008, the 33–year-old Cora hit .270 with a .371 OBP, while playing second base and shortstop.

In his 11–year career, he has played short, second, left field, third base and first base.

He is hitting .245 through 2,800 career at-bats.

…i actually don’t know much about cora…however, it’s pretty clear that Damion Easley is not coming back…and the Mets need some one to fill this role…i was hoping for Nick Punto, but he re-signed with the Twins yesterday…

…i know people will look at cora’s age,  but you will he hard pressed to find a young utility infielder…i mean, any one young is probably still trying to be a starter…also, i believe it is wise to have a veteran in this bench, utility role, because of the steady-hand and experience he can provide

…if they sign cora, fine…if not, i won’t lose sleep over it…these are the sort of acquisitions that do not come in to perspective until the season is under way

Can we get rid of anderson…..

  2. TBlz says:

I read that Phills have agreed with Ibanez. Sounds like an early XMas gift to Mets fans.

  3. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

    I agree, he’s ancient..

  4. NYMETSFAN718 says:

    Good morning

  5. Prismo says:

I think Ibanez is a good signing for the Phils.
I wouldn’t be surprised if his numbers drop off in his 2nd or 3rd year though.

  6. stickguy says:

cora would be a good fit for the utility guy. As-suming Cstillo is the starting 2B, it is at least a viable option if he ends up on the DL.

They do need someone like that this year, since the rest of thebench looks to be 1B/OF types.

  7. Stan A says:

Cora was part of a rather ineffective bottom of the Red Sox lineup, platooning with Jed Lowrie after they lost Lugo in mid-season. (Varitek was another element of the 7-8-9 hitters which killed what might have been long rallies this past season, and contributed to the Sox coming up short.)

Don’t the Mets have any young players they can start to work into 2nd base? Why do they have to go after mediocrity?

  8. stickguy says:

Ibanez is a big improvement over Burrell. Not a bad price either. Good signing for the Phis. Just have to hope he starts to act his age! You know if the mets signed him he would…

Mets should snag Rivera. RH bat with pop and good D for the OF. Just what they need.

  9. dannyguira says:

    LET’S GET MANNY!!!!!!!!!!!

    PICTURE THIS LINEUP
    JOSE REYES
    DANIEL MURPHY
    CARLOS BELTRAN
    MANNY RAMIREZ
    CARLOS DELGADO
    DAVID WRIGHT
    LUIS CASTILLO
    BRIAN SCHNEIDER
    JOHAN SANTANA

I KNOW THAT WRIGHT IS IN THE 6 SPOT BUT WONT THAT BE FILTHY

    GET MANNY 09

  10. dannyguira says:

    LETS GET MANNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GET MANNY 09

  11. CaseStreet says:

stickguy, totally agree. Ibanez may be the next Met killer and our LF solution should be Rivera, so we can go after Tex.

  12. NYMETSFAN718 says:

How is he an improvement over Burrel?? Other than BA, Burrel has better ofensive numbers. ANd they both play a horrible LF.

  13. TBlz says:

YOu could do alot worse, imo, than Cora for middle IF-type. Vet, been around some, and he actually (by the numbers) was a better 2B than Castillo last year in the field.

  14. therealsince86 says:

Well either you have no RF or you have Murphy playing RF thus you have no RF.

  15. alex242 says:

ANYBODY WAS BETTER THAN THAT PIECE OF S** CASTILLO LAST YEAR!!

  16. TBlz says:

guys, its a little early to be yelling so much. take it easy…

  17. NYCESQ says:

Cora would be an interesting pickup. It is the epitome of Utility.

    On that note…

    Get Manny 09′.

  18. stickguy says:

Burrell is breaking down physically. He is also incredibly streaky. bascially puts up his numbers in about 1/2 of a season.

I think last year he had a super hot start, and about a 2 month stretch where he hit like Castillo.

And he is one of the worst defensive LFs around (and slow). Ibanez should be more consistant, and healthier (although older) over the next few years.

  19. NYMETSFAN718 says:

he did basically what delgado did last year offensively, just in the opposite parts of the year.

  20. TBlz says:

How about Thames when he is non-tendered by the Tigers to play LF for a year?

  21. vic79 says:

I don’t think the lineup will change that much…..maybe they move Church for a Righy bat OR just sign a Righty OF

move Scho, Anderson………that is all I ask…….I realize Castillo is likely staying whether we all like it or not

I am cool with Cora as the backup……I liked Punto but he cost waaaaay to much

  22. CaseStreet says:

I was hoping we’d get Lopez for 2B or UI. Really, though you can’t expect much from the UI position.

  23. stickguy says:

If thames is non tendered, Omar will be all over him to become the RH platoon partner in LF.

Also your back up plan at 1B.

  24. zen says:

cora must be a good guy because he has been in the majors for 10+ years and can’t hit the ball…at all. that or he has photos of selig cleaning steroid syringes out of the locker rooms

  25. vic79 says:

oooooooo Thames is getting non tendered?

I think he could really help in a platoon

I think the offense is pretty much staying the same unless I get shocked and Castillo is moved

    So

    Reyes
Castillo( chance to rebound in the 2 hole)
    Wright
    Delgado
    Beltran
    Church/Thames
    Murphy/Tatis
    Schneider/Castro
    Cora
    Reed

  26. yagottabelieve says:

Cora would be an outstanding signing. You’d have a bench of Tatis (1B-2B-3B-LF-RF & 3rd C), Cora (1B-2B-3B-SS-OF) and sometimes Murphy (1B-2B-3B-LF-RF). That’s some serious versatility.

  27. vic79 says:

I think the bench is important

hope they add Thames and Cora

  28. I’ll take Cora…he could be a good presence on the bench for us the way Easley was. You can’t have an entirely young bench. Now if we could only move Anderson…

  29. metsfan575715 says:

Thames would be a great pick up he has good pop from the right side and he can play left and right.
If we get him if he is non tendered he could platoon with murphy in left and then move tatis to the bench it will make our bench stronger.

  30. metsfan575715 says:

    i mean first not right

  31. richardsports says:

getting back to Putz for a minute,,,
he has an $8.6 million option contract for 2010, are the Mets really going to pay him that much $$ to be an 8th inning guy??
i suspect that they might exercise the option and then trade him to a team that would have him close.

  32. bizhouse99 says:

Why did we not go after Loretta???
