by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets have traded Scott Schoeneweis to the D’Backs for RHP Conor Robertson.

The 27–year-old Robertson was 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA in nine games with Arizona this past season.

Robertson is 29-13 with a 2.82 ERA in 217 career-minor league games, during which he struck out 382 batters in 305 innings.

No Schoe for Marquis?! Aww MAN. My weekend is completely ruined.

cver December 12, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Wow – this is late breaking news. I’m gonna have to read up on this guy! Thanks Matt!

I Heart Bobby V December 12, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Yea that was a let down. Whatever, ANYBODY but Schoenweis

qqqqqqqq December 12, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Is this a salary dump?

Deaner December 12, 2008 at 7:33 pm

seems like a salary dump

Elbuniondelduque December 12, 2008 at 7:33 pm

is he RH? He looks LH in the picture!

Willie Randolph December 12, 2008 at 7:33 pm

AMEN

Slob December 12, 2008 at 7:34 pm

The other guy in the Danny Haren trade.

Doc85 December 12, 2008 at 7:34 pm

either thats a picture of robertson in a mirror or hes left handed…

mdemaio December 12, 2008 at 7:34 pm

I sure hope this is salary clearing for another move…it’s hard to believe they couldn’t get more value than this for a guy who had a 2.08 ERA against lefties …

cver December 12, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Quite a different direction than going for Marquis, to be sure. He was the “throw-in” in the Haren trade. From Alabama – actually spelled Connor and he was #41!!!! So, another pitcher will have to change his number.

CitizenSnips December 12, 2008 at 7:34 pm

I’m kinda glad Omar torn this bullpen completely apart.

Slob December 12, 2008 at 7:34 pm

That is weird. He’s a righty.

MetsYeahYo December 12, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Shows over… finally

JoseReyesForPresident December 12, 2008 at 7:35 pm

ughh this one was bad hopefully am wrong!!

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 7:35 pm

uh oh freeing up some of that cash money hopefully we get a good gift for christmas with this salary dump

MetsfanfromnybutinSC December 12, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Don’t know what to say about this one but you never know this could turn out to be good, so EVERYBODY BE POSITVE ABOUT THE DEAL!

krod9 December 12, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Weird…Unless this is to free up money for Lowe, Dunn, Manny, Sheets, etc., then i don’t like this deal at all.

ror0071619 December 12, 2008 at 7:38 pm

I was really hoping we could get more for Show who was actually very good as a lefty specialist.

lil pelf December 12, 2008 at 7:38 pm

freeing up cash for manny!!!!!!!

MetsYeahYo December 12, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Will this guy even make the team? I don’t know much about him but it doesn’t seem that he would be any better of an option than kunz

MetsYeahYo December 12, 2008 at 7:40 pm

“freeing up cash for manny!!!!!!!”

No way. not gunna happen

Chris02M December 12, 2008 at 7:40 pm

i wish

scooter December 12, 2008 at 7:41 pm

its a salary dump to clear space for lowe, who will sign for 2-3 years

MetsYeahYo December 12, 2008 at 7:41 pm

although signing manny would be a big screw you to philly for taking Ibanez from us.

Knuckler December 12, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Seems like something else is brewing. Might be collecting an arm for another trade also. Could be just a salary dump. Can’t wrap my head around this one any other way. Is this guy a high rated prospect? Anyone?

Deaner December 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm

manny is the only guy out there, pitchers included, that will make the other teams in our division extremely nervous.

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Cleaning house + salary dump = big move coming!

mistermet5757 December 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm

YESSSS! This trade was made two years too late. im glad there’s somebody who actually would take him. he had a good “statistical” season this year, but everybody knows that when it came down to that big batter, he’d either walk them or give up a LONG bomb (or hit them to force in the winning run like he did in SD in June). just an awful pitcher…

this guy Robertson seems interesting…i’m liking the strikeout numbers!

m00kie December 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm

addition by subtraction .. and add lowe too :)

Slim December 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm

I like this move better than personally paving the way for Peavy to go to Chicago…

krod9 December 12, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Whatever…In Omar we trust…

bigchart333 December 12, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Show AND CASH to the Dbacks for Connor Robertson

thats a slick 5.14 ERA and 2 whole K’s…can u say DOMINATOR?

scooter December 12, 2008 at 7:43 pm

this could also be a move to clear up a lefty spot in the bullpen for fuentes…

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Strange deal….

Schoenweis was a good lefty specialist, but he walked too many people, and couldn’t get a righty out to save his life.

Now sign Lowe…

nyleetch2 December 12, 2008 at 7:45 pm

this is confusing – espn.com says hes a Righty but if that image was mirrored the D would be backwards on his jersey.

WarningTrackPower December 12, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Shawn Green. David Newhan. Aaron Sele. And now Scott Schoeneweis? This wasn’t a salary dump, this was ethnic cleansing.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 7:45 pm

While Robertson’s 2004-2006 minor league statistics are quite good, ‘07 & ‘08 show noticeable decline, but he’s not really who I’m concerned with. I’m just glad the bullpen transition continues.

amazins2001 December 12, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Are they paying his salary?

Sho is due 3.6 Mill this year.

WVMetsFan December 12, 2008 at 7:45 pm

From MLB.com

(PHOENIX, AZ) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired left-handed pitcher Scott Schoeneweis and cash considerations from the New York Mets in exchange for right-handed pitcher Connor Robertson, as announced by D-backs’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Josh Byrnes.

hmmm…..Scho and CASH…..Is this a move to upgrade the FARM system?!?

Seaver41 December 12, 2008 at 7:45 pm

There is a god.

esovia December 12, 2008 at 7:45 pm

yeah, if Omar had landed Marquis for Schoeneweiss i would officially declare the man a genius. At any rate, at leat they got rid of him.

wrightfan24 December 12, 2008 at 7:46 pm

maybe we will sign beimel now…who knows?

i hope though we bring in lowe, sheets or oliver perez..

cant wait for the next deal :)

K-RodPutz December 12, 2008 at 7:46 pm

I dont think this happened because it is not on mets.com that he is on the team

Lets Get Manny!!!!!

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 7:46 pm

I think Omar is is gearing up for Lowe. I know it doesn’t match my screen name, but we need reliability and innings. If you go high for two years and an option, Lowe might go for it because it was mentioned he’s more interested in money than years. With Delgado and Wagner coming off next year, they can go low this year and hike it up next year with a big buyout.

K-RodPutz December 12, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Get a pitcher and then Get Manny
We need him

esovia December 12, 2008 at 7:47 pm

warningtrackpower, yet wright, maine and murphy continue to be on the mets 40 man roster. It isnt about ethnicity as it is about incompetence.

bigchart333 December 12, 2008 at 7:47 pm

yeah i think it is ESSENTIAL to have 2 lefties in the pen….

DEF gotta get biemel, guardado, or Dennys Reyes…or sandy koufax

scooter December 12, 2008 at 7:48 pm

why does everyone want manny, yes hes great offensively but come on, hes a liability, hes not a fit here

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Really hope it doesn’t set up for Lowe.

Hopefully, it’s for Sheets.

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 7:49 pm

nice to see omar getting rid of bad contracts…

K-RodPutz December 12, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Since the phillies got ibanez we need to get manny or burrell

WallyWhitehurst December 12, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Schow’s salary- $3.6M

Robertson’s salary- $390k (league min)

WarningTrackPower December 12, 2008 at 7:49 pm

esovia:

1st: the players I mentioned are Jewish.
2nd: Lighten up, it’s a joke.

lil pelf December 12, 2008 at 7:50 pm

why does everyone want manny? because he is maybe the best right handed hitter OF ALL TIME and the mets need a righty bat.

K-RodPutz December 12, 2008 at 7:50 pm

thats good but did the d backs eat up all his contract

WVMetsFan December 12, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Omar’s Statement:

“We’re happy to acquire Connor Robertson,” said Mets General Manager Omar Minaya. “He has a solid minor league track record and he’s a good addition to our system.”

MrazDeGrawGrrl December 12, 2008 at 7:51 pm

warningtrackpower mentioned 4 players and 3 of them are Jewish

scooter December 12, 2008 at 7:51 pm

hes also going to cost you 25 mil a season for a 1 side of the ball player, im sorry but hes not worth the trouble

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Since Chris Capuano was non-tendered, I imagine the Mets just traded Schoe because there’s only room for one Duke U lefthander on the roster. Welcome Cap!

K-RodPutz December 12, 2008 at 7:51 pm

lil pelf i agree with you. Matt tell Omar to look at this site because we need manny

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 7:53 pm

For esovia: WarningtrackPower was referring that they are all Jewish, not just Caucasian. He’s just being ignorant considering the the owners are Jewish as well. I’m Catholic, just for the record, and I am taught to forgive. So I forgive all the racial overtones that have have ever happened in the past and are sure to occur going forward.

On the other hand, if somebody else wants to rip him a new one, be my guest.

K-RodPutz December 12, 2008 at 7:53 pm

scooter yes he is

ruiz2k5 December 12, 2008 at 7:53 pm

oh wait!!! maybe minaya did a salary dump for lowe

Metskin December 12, 2008 at 7:54 pm

If he’s an RHP, why does the picture look like he’s throwing left handed?

K-RodPutz December 12, 2008 at 7:54 pm

idk

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 7:55 pm

sign garland, manny and his buddy petey and call it a day…

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 7:55 pm

Hmm. Strikeout guy, low-90s fastball with life, sweeping change…

Did we just trade last year’s only reliable LOOGY for Heilman II?

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:55 pm

I’d imagine this means we’re getting Beimel or Ohman.

ny1012 December 12, 2008 at 7:56 pm

thank god

metsfromafar December 12, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Someone just Google image searched for Robertson and posted the coolest looking picture. That’s actually Dana Eveland (LHP) before he was traded to the A’s.

freubr01 December 12, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Warning Track-Sele is not jewish I don;t believe…I really hope this is a move so they can get beimel since the phils’ lineup is so LH heavy…

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Maybe he’s ambidextrous? (Greg Harris II?)

jamie December 12, 2008 at 7:58 pm

can’t wait to see what this is really all about…

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 7:58 pm

“Salary dump?” Won’t Beimel or Ohman cost nearly as much?

biomarco5 December 12, 2008 at 7:58 pm

Milton Bradley…thoughts?

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 7:58 pm

WarningTrack: We were posting at the same time. As long as you are joking, I have no problem with you. However, people on this site have gotten really upset when the jokes become ethnic. Just friendly advice.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 7:59 pm

metsfromafar

Nice call on Dana Eveland!

loopenark December 12, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Interesting. Is he arbitration eligible? A potential non-tender, so we have addition by substraction? Does he have options left so he can be stuck in AAA? Interesting indeed. more moves to come no doubt.

wrightfan24 December 12, 2008 at 7:59 pm

yes leiter…beimel will cost as much..but hey he had like a 2 something ERA…hes much more worth the $ than schoewneis was

krod9 December 12, 2008 at 8:00 pm

biomarco5, i like Bradley. I think after Manny and Dunn, he’s the third best outfielder on the market. However, I think Manny’s too expensive, and Dunn would be the most value.

mistermet December 12, 2008 at 8:01 pm

God Bless us, everyone!

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Milton Bradley makes Elijah Dukes look like a choir boy.

Metfreak December 12, 2008 at 8:03 pm

I hope a big move is next otherwise this might be the works of the Coupons

citifieldrocks December 12, 2008 at 8:03 pm

hey i dont think this is to free up salery to get manny lowe or someone else because i remeber reading some arical that said they expect the mets to lose salery this off season instead of adding it

scottmetsfan December 12, 2008 at 8:04 pm

warning track, when you mention ethnic cleansing with jewish names, it is really in questionable taste and far from funny.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Beimel’s 2008 ERA of 2.02 is mighty impressive that’s for sure. How he came by it with that ugly WHIP of 1.45 I’ll never figure out. His career ERA and WHIP of 4.31 & 1.50 respectively make me want to stay far away from Beimel.

The best opinion of Beimel I’ve read so far this offseason went something like this:

“Every offseason, one LOOGY becomes the overvalued darling. This year it’s Beimel.”

cver December 12, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Hi Scotty! Busy week for the Metropolitians!

Gina December 12, 2008 at 8:07 pm

I thought this said Conor Jackson at first and got super excited. =/

Also this guy is horrible. He’s terrible against righties or lefties. What was the point of this deal?

lefties opsed over .800 against him last year. and right handers opsed over .700. At least Scho was awesome against lefties. This guy is bad all around.

lil pelf December 12, 2008 at 8:08 pm

it’s not just how good manny’s numbers are, its the fact that he takes SO much pressure off the lineup and the likes beltran and wright. he is a notoriously clutch post season hitter who takes all the attention off the other mets and puts it on himself. not to mention the affect he has in terms of other teams having to pitch around him and worry about him. theres many reasons for manny to be on this team. the wilpons dont like him? so then its a no? that is elementary thinking. well they dont like him so its a no. come on, we are trying to win a world series here. and oh yeah he’s the best right handed hitter ever.

Gina December 12, 2008 at 8:09 pm

GravediggerHebner, i imagine playing in the park has a lot to do with that ERA. Which is why so many “numbers guys” barely pay attention to ERA.

The Amazings December 12, 2008 at 8:09 pm

I hope its salary cleaning for Sheets and Manny, We’d be set and that would probably end our offseason, maybe with minor additions from the salary cap, and I would give castillo a second chance, even if he did hit .245 and give niese the 5 spot.

Sheets for 2 years for 22 million
and Ramirez 3 Years for 63 million

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:09 pm

@ wrightfan24: True about Scho… but he, like everyone the last two years, was used a LOT outside his wheelhouse (LOOGY). Scho’s numbers against lefties are just about as good as Beimel’s.

@ biomarco: Bradley? If we were an AL team, maybe– he’s much too tender-of-leg to do anything beyond 2-3 games a week in the field.

citifieldrocks December 12, 2008 at 8:09 pm

hey what does non-tendred mean?

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 8:10 pm

What’s wierd is his picture shows he is throwing lefty. I went on ESPN’s player pages and they do indeed mention he throws righty. I tried looking at bthe pictures of all the other lefties and they didn’t put the wrong picture up there by mistake. The weird part, though, is his splits. It says lefties hit .250 against him while righties hit .300 against him.
So I think the picture is correct, he’s gotta be a lefty.

If he is a righty, then whoever compared him to Heilman made a good call. Low 90’s fastball, sinker who gets lefties out! I’m going to the Great Google in the Sky and try to research this some more.

Metsfan81177 December 12, 2008 at 8:10 pm

i really believe that omar let ibanez get away because he thinks the wilpons will let him make a serious offer to manny.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Just wondering… why no Dunn rumors, even after the Ibanez signing? Is everyone just waiting for Tex to set the market for position players?

Gina December 12, 2008 at 8:11 pm

non tendered means they were players still on their minor league contracts not eligible for free agency who’s teams chose not to offer them arbitration making them free agents.

or something along those lines.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Gina

I hear you about the home park. A previous commenter said words to the effect that “Beimel is worth much more than Scho due to his low ERA” and I was posting my version of disbelief.

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Non-tendered is a player who has less than six years with a club, therefore not eligible for free agency yet. If the organization he belongs to does not offer him arbitration, then they must offer him a contract (tendered) or release him (non-tendered), thereby making him free to sign with whomever he wants.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:13 pm

According to Scout.com, his FB tops out at 91-92, but with movement, and his “sweeping” curve and slider give him a nice array of K-worthy weaponry. (3:1 K/BB ratio in minors.)

If he can find his sea legs, he’ll be veddy interesting in the middle innings.

citifieldrocks December 12, 2008 at 8:13 pm

thanks man

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:14 pm

youthmovement

Some eagle eyed fan previously posted, that pic is of Dana Eveland, not Connor Robertson.

darkstar73 December 12, 2008 at 8:15 pm

bottom line is, there was no way Show was going to be a part of this team next year. He’s been booed far too much and the Mets need to try and change the team up a little bit, get away from the negative feelings of the past couple years. The fact that he got traded for a minor leaguer screams salary dump to me, which also tells me that Omar might be trying to free up some money for another signing. If you trade Show for Marquis, you’re not doing that, but this clears money to use elsewhere (Lowe? Sheets? Beimel? who the f knows?)

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 8:15 pm

He’s more than likely not going to be anything but oh well. Hopefully this salary dump has less to do with Wilpon losing 300 million today and more to do with another FA signing. At least this guy had a good K rate in the minors.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:17 pm

darkstar73

An article I read from an AZ source stated Scho and “cash considerations” to the DBacks for Connor. It was not specific, however, as to how much cash was considered.

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Thanks, Gravedigger…

Kalihan42 December 12, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Interesting minor league stat from scout.com

2005 Highlights:
* Struck out 120 batters in 75 innings

He’s 27 so hopefully he still has room to grow here. I do think this is also to open up salary for other acquisitions but also maybe to get a little younger.

Gina December 12, 2008 at 8:18 pm

With Scho gone we’re going to need another lefty, outside of Feliciano, and the 8th and 9th inning, we have nothing but extreme roogys.

citifieldrocks December 12, 2008 at 8:18 pm

this is prob to help the wilpons get there 300 million back even though this is only a little dent

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:19 pm

@ Gina: Um… not sure I’d call Putz and K-Rod “one-out guys.”

Kalihan42 December 12, 2008 at 8:22 pm

The Monsters you can keep dreaming but it doesn’t make it so….Lowe or Perez….I think it very unlikely that Minaya brings in both

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger, neither would I. Hence why I didn’t.

Metfreak December 12, 2008 at 8:24 pm

What about Eddie Guardado?? He gets lefties out, and isn’t nearly as horrible against righties as Scott was…

TheMonstersOutOfTheCage December 12, 2008 at 8:25 pm

I know but it would be nice tho

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Sylar

I have much love for Everyday Eddie, and he makes even more sense now that I’ve learned he’s a mentor of sorts for JJ Putz. I hope Omar sees the light.

darkstar73 December 12, 2008 at 8:27 pm

how in god’s name are we supposed to acquire Saito?

biomarco5 December 12, 2008 at 8:27 pm

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:28 pm

@ Gina: DURP. Apologies.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:29 pm

@darkstar73: If Saito’s non-tendered, he’s fair game.

(Also, he’s 57. Or 58. I forget.)

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:29 pm

Saito was on Jayson Stark’s list of “those who might be non-tendered” but to the best of my knowledge that hasn’t happened yet. If it does, I think the Tigers will pounce hard.

metsfan1 December 12, 2008 at 8:29 pm

Talk about addition by subtraction. Don’t know much about the guy we got. I don’t even care. As long as Schoenweis is gone and Arizona is taking his salary we could have gotten a bag of balls and I would be happy. Lets use that $$$ and continue to build the pen or put it to a starter.

Endearus December 12, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Definately a salary dump as Mr. Wilpon was a client of Mr.Madoff who took clients for over 50 billion. Hope this does not jepordize other signings or the team going forward

Cornelius Clifford Floyd December 12, 2008 at 8:31 pm

so whats it gonna take to bring Ollie back? how many years/money?

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 8:31 pm

MetFreak – nice Godfather comparison. I was thinking something along the lines of Isiah Thomas wiping out the roster when he took over.

mark4212 December 12, 2008 at 8:31 pm

woooohoooooooo…. 3 more and all the mets i wanted gone are gone… is Omar listening to me?

Feliciano, Castillo, Delgado.

And for the topping on the cake….. Castro and Schneider.

Not sure all that will happen, but so far 2 are gone and instead of AAA for Smith, he got moves so 3 of the guys on the Major league roster i didn’t want to see day one are gone. Also I won’t miss endy.

Keep cleaning house but keep the core (Wright, Reyes, Beltran). It’s the other parts that kept breaking.

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Biomarco – Omar said he wasn’t interested in Andruw Jones the other day when he shot down the Juan Pierre rumors. I would trade Castillo for Andruw Jones, though. Salaries are close and we would have a LF for one year. Maybe by then FMart will be ready.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Bad memories aside… Scho wasn’t bad when used properly (Jerry was better at it than Willie). Pitching him for full innings, or in high-leverage situations against righties– as he was used in 2007 and much of 2008– was putting him in a no-win situation… a bit like bringing in Wagner to, say, pinch-hit in a key situation.

Metsfan81177 December 12, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Anybody have a way of getting a mets chat room together

Maineiac December 12, 2008 at 8:38 pm

The Wilpons lost 300 million dollars, and with the Real Estate tanking, Omar will probably be on a budget. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t get Lowe because of this.

It isn’t fair… one team in New York can sign whoever they please, while the other has to clean the house to be able to sign the next guy.

citifieldrocks December 12, 2008 at 8:38 pm

what this isnt good enogh? haha jk

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:38 pm

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger

Good point about Scho’s use. I guess this means we’re keeping Feliciano. Also, I loved your breakdown of Lowe in the previous thread. Consider me a fan.

Kalihan42 December 12, 2008 at 8:39 pm

biomarco I don’t think he is on the radar but A Jones does make some sense from a defensive standpoint if it was a way to unload Castillo’s contract AND the mets need the money for pitching instead of hitting….meaning the mets have to pony up for Perez or Lowe without raising the budget too much and don’t want to spend on Dunn and company…that being said I don’t think it happens. There is no talk about it and besides…do they really want Castillo for 3 years in return. I am getting the sinking feeling we are stuck with Castillo…hope he gets a little healthier and at least can be close to the 300 hitter he used to be.

kistics December 12, 2008 at 8:39 pm

This is a strange trade… it seems like Omar is clearing payroll for a big signing or just plain outright payroll cut.

Hope it’s clearing room for big signing.. whoever it is..

Chris02M December 12, 2008 at 8:39 pm

omar didnt say he want interested in andruw jones. he said hed need to open a spot to get him

PeterDragon December 12, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Metsfan81177,

there is the hotfoot room
but I don’t think there is much activity when no games.

(it is great during season)

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Well, if Fred told Omar that that the payroll must go down because of his loss today, a telltale sign will be Delgado getting moved this weekend.

squad December 12, 2008 at 8:40 pm

I’d rather have Castillo at 2B than Jones in LF.

And why the desire to get rid of Delgado? He helped carry the team in the second half.

Chris02M December 12, 2008 at 8:41 pm

we gave arizona 1.6 mil in the deal

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:41 pm

@GraveDiggerHebner:

Well, shucks.

Kalihan42 December 12, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Maineiac

Some times a little fiscal responsibility is good for a team. It gives you a little more wiggle room when a star player crashes and burns or a career ending injury occurs…. Don’t you think the Yanks were starting to regret that Giambi deal a little after the first 3 years or so???

Deaner December 12, 2008 at 8:43 pm

so the mets cleared what, 1.6 mill or so in payroll?

i mean, is that what this move was really about?

i dunno, i think schoe was just cooked here.

citifieldrocks December 12, 2008 at 8:43 pm

there cutting payroll for shore but idk what for i thin it for the 300 million the wilpons lost

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:44 pm

I don’t think the trade of Schoeneweis was a salary dump. Below is the first paragraph of an article from mlb dot com,
please note the phrase “cash considerations.”

(PHOENIX, AZ) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired left-handed pitcher Scott Schoeneweis and cash considerations from the New York Mets in exchange for right-handed pitcher Connor Robertson, as announced by D-backs’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Josh Byrnes.

kingman 26 December 12, 2008 at 8:44 pm

This is absolutely magnificent news, and almost makes up for letting the Phils sign Ibanez.

THANK YOU Omar for getting rid of your second biggest mistake after Castillo.

PeterDragon December 12, 2008 at 8:44 pm

I see not Chris posted the money part.

oh well.

and I agree with Gina, we need another lefty out there.

Metfreak December 12, 2008 at 8:45 pm

If they are cutting pay roll because of the money they lost then we are doomed but lets hope thats not the case and I really think its not

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 8:45 pm

I don’t want Delgado moved, I was just making a reference about somebody saying that Fred lost 300 million today and he was going to tell Omar to cut the payroll. Delgado would be one of the quickest ways to drop a chunk quick.

Giving Arizona 1.6 Mil means we basically split his salary with them. So it’s blow up the bullpen, addition by subtraction, whatever cliche you want to use.

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Kingman- You wanted to give up a draft pick and 3 years for Ibanez?

PeterDragon December 12, 2008 at 8:45 pm

now, not not :)

Matt needs an edit function here

Kalihan42 December 12, 2008 at 8:46 pm

What was show making this year? It is still a bit of a dump…

citifieldrocks December 12, 2008 at 8:47 pm

3.6 i think or 3.3 somthing lke that

cver December 12, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Saito will possibly be nontendered, I heard, Mr. Star.

cver December 12, 2008 at 8:48 pm

ENTER THE DRAGON!!!

Gina December 12, 2008 at 8:48 pm

that basically seems pointless. we got rid of one of the only two lefties in our pen to save 1.6 million?

kistics December 12, 2008 at 8:49 pm

which lefty is out there to sign?

cousinrk December 12, 2008 at 8:49 pm

So they saved 2 mill and got rid of a pitcher who didn’t live up to what the expected of him for a guy with good minor league numbers out of the bullpen and at least gives them some depth in the minors. Sounds good to me. Some people just want to complain about everything.

Kalihan42 December 12, 2008 at 8:49 pm

Gravedigger

I agree salary is only part of this deal…he is also bringing in a young pitcher with some strikeout potential that is kind of a roll of the dice.

Metsfan81177 December 12, 2008 at 8:50 pm

anyone on aol want to get a mets chatroom going

CaseStreet December 12, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Biggest move yet! Way to go Omar! You da man!

kistics December 12, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Schoe was dissappointing in 07, but he was pretty decent this year. I don’t understand this trade, unless Mets saw something in this Robertson guy.. or Omar has something up his sleeve

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:51 pm

For a LOOGY? I’d like to see them roll the dice on an underperformer– someone with potential or a track record who had an awful year– at a league-min or minor-league-deal (think: this year’s Dan Wheeler, or J. P. Howell, or Grant Balfour). We want to overpay on the BIG players, not on the margins.

Any ideas on who that someone(s) would be?

kingman 26 December 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Sylar—Ibanez is a really good player, which I hope we do not see too much evidence of too many times next year…..yes, Manny is infinitely better, and Dunn is better in many ways, but 3/30 for Ibanez is many millions less than what those two will probably cost.

Yes, I think ibanez for 3/30 would have been a fine addition to this team.

And Gina—Schoeneweis is HORRIBLE. Releasing him would have been cause for celebration.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Kalihan42

I hear you. I just have a hard time considering $2 mil a salary dump when your payroll is around $140 mil. For the Marlins, this would be a dump, sure.

But yes I like the gamble on the kid combined with the further cleansing of the bullpen of failure.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm

IOW, no Beimel, please. (That would be Scho II, essentially.)

youthmovement December 12, 2008 at 8:54 pm

On a lighter note, Connor has logged 300 minor league innings. According to Rick Peterson, he should now be ready to be a star.

jamie December 12, 2008 at 8:54 pm

@kingman – over at beerleaguer, they pretty much are disappointed w/ signing Ibanez. Because he ain’t all that. pretty much a lateral move, production wise, and screws w/ the lineup too.

Metsfan81177 December 12, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Everyboby said there was no chance to get beltran and santana and look what happened. I think omar is going to get his wish for xmas and manny will be a met in 09

PeterDragon December 12, 2008 at 8:54 pm

nice to “see you” cver

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Ibanez is old, a horrible OF, very sporadic when it comes to hitting lefties (good last year, but abominable in ‘07 and ‘06), and most of all, he’d cost a 2nd rounder. Absolutely not worth it.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 8:56 pm

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger

I’d need to find out more about his health, but Chris Capuano was non-tendered, that would be one “on the margins” guy I’d consider.

kingman 26 December 12, 2008 at 8:57 pm

Well, Sylar, I certainly hope you are right.

It’s a crapshoot to expect Tatis to repeat 2008 and we have no idea what Murphy will do over a full year.

CaseStreet December 12, 2008 at 8:58 pm

Capuano is interesting, but he won’t be ready until a few months in the season.

Flushing_is_Burning December 12, 2008 at 8:58 pm

Omar is cleaning house, or pen I should say. not sure how I feel about this deal though. Omar can still package the new guy, Felicieno, and a single A guy for the Cubs??

Gina December 12, 2008 at 9:00 pm

kingman even though all thats true why would Ibanez make sense? there are other left field options who are younger, just as good, if not better, and won’t cost a draft pick.

kingman 26 December 12, 2008 at 9:00 pm

But I LOVE being rid of Schoeneweis….never could get anyone out in a big spot, never met an inherited runner he didn’t want to usher across home plate, didn’t throw hard or any pitch particularly impressively, and has been mediocre his entire career.

I ain’t wrong about any of that.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:01 pm

@GraveDiggerHebner

Was thinking about LOOGYs, but… hmm… Capuano is intriguing.

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 9:01 pm

One question I’d like to ask… why would the D’Backs want Scott??? Have they looked at his numbers away from Shea Stadium?? They’re god awful

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:01 pm

CaseStreet

Thanks for the info on Capuano. Maybe Gary Majewski? He’s been horrible for a while now. I’ll be able to take more wild stabs in the dark once the official non-tendered list is released later.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Schoeneweis actually threw one of the hardest fastballs on the team (96-97 tops, harder than anyone but Wagner). Problem is, it had little movement, and his location could be spotty.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Oops, if it’s loogys you’re looking for cancel my suggestion of Gary Majewski, he’s a righty.

kistics December 12, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Connor Robertson is not that young either.. he’s 27 and still not on big leagues full time

jlaz89 December 12, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Hahahaha schoeneweis did not throw 96-97, he threw 90-91

CaseStreet December 12, 2008 at 9:03 pm

The look on Shoe’s face after the last game is how I felt whenever he pitched. Drugged, robbed and beaten!

kingman 26 December 12, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Gina–Everyone has players they like and prefer, and I am guilty of thinking Ibanez is pretty good…yes, there are younger and cheaper options, and no, Ibanez is no hall of famer, and now that he is a Phil, I like him a lot less.

We are rooting for the same thing, so let;s get Dunn and his great OBP for the 6 hole, or let’s get Rivera and hope Case is right about his potential.

Anyways, I am out of here for the night, so let’s hope Omar trades Slappy next!

While I loved Chan Ho’s trade ideas of Schoeneweis for a bag of pretzels, at least we got a player for him.

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 9:03 pm

There is no way Scott threw 96 mph.

PedroMANIA December 12, 2008 at 9:04 pm

According to ESPN the Mets sent 1.6 mil with Schoe for this guy. Schoe was making 3.6 mil in 2009 so we saved 2 mil. I’m not upset that he is gone but I would have thought Omar could have gotten more for a LOOGY with good stats and only 1 year left on his deal. The guy we got in return is a dime a dozen; we seem to be collecting these type of guys lately. Oh well, looks like Omar really needed to shed that 2 mil for his next move.

Gina December 12, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Sylar

probably because he does his job against lefties and loogys are almost always in high demand.

BIG17EASY December 12, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Post says Roberston throws righty. Picture is of a left-hander. Which is he?

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:05 pm

@jlaz89:

Just looked it up. My bad.

(Could’ve sworn I saw him tickle the mid-90s a few times last year on TV… bah.)

nyj0126 December 12, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Thank you Omar. He needed to go. Paying for 1.6 million out of 3.6 million is a lot, but we needed to get him out of here. By paying part of his salary, it helped pick up a decent pitching prospect for the Mets. Those numbers Conor Robertson has in the minor leagues is impressive. Especially the K’s.
\Rotoworld said Schoenweis could have gotten 2 year/6 million out on the open market. That’s wrong. Arthur Rhodes got 2 years/4 million and that would have been what Show would have gotten. I actually would have liked to see the Mets sign Rhodes, but he signed with the Reds before we could get to him. The Mets should seriously consider signing Juan Cruz or Joe Beimel now.

CaseStreet December 12, 2008 at 9:06 pm

There is no way Shoe was gonna pitch for the Mets in 09. We’re lucky we got anything in return.

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Scott Schoenweis away from Shea Stadium:

BA: .296
OPS: .849

That’s horrendous. How much value do you think Omar could’ve gotten for THAT?

Gina December 12, 2008 at 9:07 pm

yeah jlaz pitch fx has Schow at 90-91 and fangraphs has him 89-90.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:07 pm

@ Sylar:

Not sure who I was thinking of… Scot Shields, maybe?

Gina December 12, 2008 at 9:08 pm

sylar whats it just against lefties?

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 9:11 pm

The guy we got isnt anything special, but Omar is doing what he needs to do.

He’s getting rid of the people responsible for these collapses, and it starts with Heilman/Schoenweiss. I liked Smith, but he was part of the problem as well.

Putz, Krod, and probably one of Beimel/Ohman/Guardado will keep doing that. The only guys that should stay are Parnell, Feliciano, and Stokes.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:12 pm

perhaps Chuck James? He was HORRIBLE last year, but his splits against lefties were, well, better than against righties anyway. His career splits are rotten all around though, so would be a last resort.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Damaso Marte, mebbe? (After his fizzle with the Yankees, he should be highly affordable, and due for a bounce back.)

c.1970 December 12, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Logical move. Move anyone off the 2007–2008 Mets that isn’t needed (Beltran, Reyes, Wright, Santana, and a few others will be needed). Beyond talent, the Mets are trying to create a different clubhouse culture. No GM is going to openly say that.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:19 pm

I’d take Marte, but unfortunately the Yanks re-upped him for 3yrs/$12mil.

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Scott Schoenweis Away 2008:

Lefties: 1.88 ERA, 11 hits in 14 innings
Righties: 6.43 ERA, 21 hits and 13 walks in 14 innings

taestee December 12, 2008 at 9:20 pm

there was no way this team could move on with the show and heilman on board. their long faces on and coming off the mound practically invited the boobirds. we need guys with some fire. krod, putz, and this guy all seem like pretty intense dudes.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:21 pm

(Almost swallows own tongue)

COUGH. 3/12 for Marte? Jebus.

Okay, then… Steve Kline, or Embree? (Plus, they could keep the kids entertained with, “When _I_ broke into the majors” stories.)

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:22 pm

NIce splittin’, Sylar!

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:22 pm

Jamie Walker? Maybe the O’s will decide that after his wretched ‘08 they don’t want him for $4.5 mil this season, but it would require a trade of some kind.

Philnym31 December 12, 2008 at 9:22 pm

Willie Harris resigned with the Nationals. I would have signed him just to stop him from making any more spectacular catches against us.

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 9:22 pm

Addition by subtraction people… Besides who knows? Maybe this guy can be good…

ipg37 December 12, 2008 at 9:23 pm

#1) STARTING PITCHERS PLEASE
#2) 1 or 2 more changes in the bullpen.
#3) GET MANNY

gipper82475 December 12, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Show for WHO? Huh? What? I mean…Marquis was ok…this is just weird. Hopefully just clearing room for a big move.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:24 pm

“Willie Harris resigned with the Nationals. I would have signed him just to stop him from making any more spectacular catches against us.”

That gets me thinking… Burrell, anyone?

bucknersankles December 12, 2008 at 9:25 pm

MANRAM OR BUST !

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Did Darren Oliver reup with Anaheim?

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Embree just signed with the Rockies 1yr/$2.25 mil

darkstar73 December 12, 2008 at 9:29 pm

it’s funny how people during the season would have traded Show for a “bag of balls” or just out right released him, but now, we trade him for a semi-promising minor league arm, they complain. Satisfied much Met fans?

Jared Blank December 12, 2008 at 9:32 pm

The pic is Dana Eveland not Conner Robertson.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Kline & Oliver both available as best as I can tell, Kline more so:

On June 9, 2008, Kline was ejected from a game for making contact with an umpire; facing a fine and possible suspension, the Phillies released Kline two days later, on June 11, 2008.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:32 pm

So, without trimming, our pen looks like so:

Cherry
Muniz
Kunz
O’Day
Parnell
Green
Sanchez
Feliciano
Stokes
Putz
K-Rod

(w/Knight, Figueroa, and some others with undefined roles)

Who goes?

Al Kykyoras December 12, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Gotta agree with ya there, darky. Show is gone. That in itself makes the deal perfect.

So far, Omar has shined this off season. I’m not really an Omar fan boy either. I think he has made good and bad moves. So far, he’s done an awesome job this season and K-Rod, to me wasn’t even the best deal.

If he could get a Ben Sheets for a two year deal now, we’re set.

MainStMets23 December 12, 2008 at 9:33 pm

say it aint schoooooooooooo, THANK GOD hes gone, he was awful

NYCESQ December 12, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Saito is officially a FA.

NYCESQ December 12, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Oh, and…

Get Manny 09′.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:35 pm

I’d say Kunz, Muniz & Parnell to AAA, and O’Day to the DL so that’s 7 remaining, but needs another lefty IMO.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Subtract Cherry, add “future” lefty, that’s the pen. Guardado please.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:38 pm

If we can sign Guardado and Saito, we’d have quite the closer rotation.

darkstar73 December 12, 2008 at 9:39 pm

if Saito really gets nontendered, there’s a reason, his arm is f’ed. No reason to pick him up. And if he’s ok, there will be other teams willing to give him a chance to be a closer. We can’t pay the guy enough to be a 7th inning guy, sorry.

The Captain December 12, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Juan Cruz and Joe Beimel have decent stats, however wouldnt they cost a draft pick if aquired? Dont think a middle reliever would be worth a top pick.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:41 pm

I’ve read conflicting reports about Saito’s health, but if he’s viable at all I have to think Detroit, who was desperate for Putz, will jump on him. Yes, I said “desperate for Putz.” Sue me.

mdemaio December 12, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Leiter, you forgot Robertson… ;)

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Maybe TOO many closers in a bullpen can be a bad thing… U need at LEAST 3 guys that can give u 2 to 3 innings ready every day

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:43 pm

Kidding about Saito.

Beimel’s a type B, Cruz is a type A (!)

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 9:45 pm

K-Rod
Putz
Guardado
Green
Sanchez
Feliciano
Stokes

I’ll go forward with that. Get me Everyday Eddie.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:46 pm

@ mdemaio: Ah, so.

Ohman’s looking better and better. Or maybe (digging deep) Casey Fossum?

Philnym31 December 12, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Ohman or Guardado would be fine.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 9:51 pm

damn i hope this is to make a push for lowe or manny – especially now that the yanks have signed that lack of intestinal fortitude pitcher ( burnett) i cant see em ponying up another 75 mill for lowe – he may be ours boyz and girls

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 9:53 pm

heres to list of non tendered so far
Jonny Gomes
Willy Taveras
Takashi Saito, Scott Proctor, Yhency Brazoban, Angel Berroa and Mario Alvarez
Clay Hensley and Charlie Haeger
Chris Britton and Justin Christian
Tim Redding
C. Trent Rosecrans e-mails that the Reds will not tender contracts to Matt Belisle or Gary Majewski.
Chris Capuano
Kevin Cash
Chuck James
Chris Burke

gomes is a interesting name so is redding

wrightfan24 December 12, 2008 at 9:54 pm

so is capuano and saito

darkstar73 December 12, 2008 at 9:54 pm

we need another lefty in the pen either way, can’t just have only feliciano, especially now that the Phillies have an even heavier lefty line up (idiots!). I like how our bullpen shapes up though. I wonder how Stokes will do, and also what role Sanchez will play, now that there’s a lot less pressure on both of them. Should be interesting.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 9:59 pm

I’ll take Guardado, for the win. (Both for the LOOGYness and for the Orosco flashbacks he’ll give me after a few giant Coors Lights.)

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Guardado who?

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:03 pm

I wanna see what his stats look like…

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Ugh, Coors Lights. Tastes the same going in as it does coming out. I look forward to this beer island, or is it Beer Island, thingy.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:03 pm

As in, “Everyday Eddie,” former Twins/Mariners all-star closer, current LOOGY-in-waiting.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:04 pm

Beer Island? WHAAAAAAA?

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Ya saw Guardado’s stats… yaaaa not so much… last guy we need…

PelfreyCyYoung09 December 12, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Shoe wasn’t really that bad, he was a supposed to be a lefty specialist, but he had too many moments where he messed it up for us…

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Cerrone did a tour of Citi Field and said that there was a ‘beer island’ but he used lower case letters so I’m not sure if he’s just saying there is a place in the middle to buy beer or if it’s like the ‘Beer Island’ at Coney Island that I’ve read about.

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 10:07 pm

scott proctor

now thats a guy id be interested in for the last 2 spots in the bullpen

jeenyus245 December 12, 2008 at 10:07 pm

so does this mean the mets are keeping feliciano?

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:08 pm

i feel bad for scho – he didnt deserve nearly all of the abuse he got – just not the right player for the team – and his excuse ala tom glavine in the last game punched his ticket outta here

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:08 pm

oleosmirf: I agree with you, Proctor can be our last addition for the pen…

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:09 pm

Schoeneweis was garbage. Plain and simple. The fact that Omar got a good prospect back is icing on the cake. I would have traded him for a Big Mac meal with a diet coke. Super sized.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:10 pm

LEITERMILNER LOVE THE 6 million dollar man reference in yer handle

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:10 pm

Proctor’s okay… but we’ve got Sanchez and Stokes (and, potentially, Parnell or Kunz) for that sorta thing.

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Actually, Proctor had a terrible year with the Dodgers… Gosh we just need 1 or 2 bullpen guys, 2 SP and its done…

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:11 pm

chan i disagree with u he had peiods of effectiveness and periods when he was gawd awful but remember in 07 he had that achillees problem – last year no excuse

ajm317 December 12, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Nice move by Omar. Would like to see them persuie Sheets or Lowe. Also we need 1 more bullpen guy and possibly a nice outfielder. How about trade Church to Rays for Sorenstein?

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:12 pm

we can also sign oscar gamble and have the team of PROCTOR & GAMBLE :p

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 10:13 pm

I think Beimel or Ohman will do it.

More interested in Beimel.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:13 pm

now that scho is gone – i don’t see church being traded – unless they can’t get lowe or sheets or find a better sp via trade – then i think he may be gone and manny or bradley in his sted

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:13 pm

I dont get the fascination to get Sonnastine nor the idea to trade Church… Sonnastine is just as good as Marquis and i LOVE Church… just got unlucky last year…

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 10:14 pm

no beimel or cruz

not worth losing draft picks to sign them

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:14 pm

well the dodgers didn’t tender saito – he could work in the pen

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Scho was fine against lefty hitters, but the Mets were unable to use him exclusively that way and he was exposed. I think for intangible reasons it’s best that he’s gone but it does create the need for another lefty in the pen to go with Feliciano, a$$uming he stays.

ilovenysports03 December 12, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Hey doesn’t he look like Heath Bell in that picture. Hey another power arm to compete for a spot in the pen. Getting rid of Scott was a necessary evil. I wish him well.

IWantManny/Krod4Christmas December 12, 2008 at 10:15 pm

not too sure about the current type a/ type b deal , but can we sign manny and lowe now or no?

cousinrk December 12, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Look Show’s a middle reliever with average stuff with a big contract and who did not perform well against anyone other than lefties. He’s not exactly a step above any other average reliever. Why on earth would anyone give up something really good.

So they got a guy with good K numbers in the minors, you take a flier on him and see what happens. That’s what relievers are about. You never know who’s going to be good from year to year. If he doesn’t make the team, he’s depth in Triple-A.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:17 pm

also no Beimel because, despite his fantastic ERA in 2008, he’s not a good pitcher, unless one enjoys lots of baserunners against.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:17 pm

guys check out hot foot – they did some payroll calculations and with the moves we just made we can still sign lowe and stay under the luxery tax threshold !!!! at least thats what i got out of the article

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Beimel’s a type-B: we don’t give up a pick to sign him (the Dodgers get a sandwich pick). Cruz, on the other hand…

(Although it would just be a second-rounder we give up– our first-rounder’s headed to Orange County for signing K-Rod.)

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Beimel wasn’t offered arbitration, right?

MrazDeGrawGrrl December 12, 2008 at 10:17 pm

rustyjr- schoeneweis had missed games earlier in the week to be with his wife and new baby when there were medical concerns involving the baby. i really don’t think his ‘excuse’ was quite like glavine’s

jeenyus245 December 12, 2008 at 10:18 pm

i’m not a huge fan of Sonnastine after the World Series. i had hoped he would subdue the Phillies but that didn’t happen hence why I would not want him on the Mets.

I would like the Mets to go after Lowe or even Ollie (but for only one year)

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:18 pm

u r corect sir – hi ho!

BSMITTYFDNY December 12, 2008 at 10:18 pm

If Fred really lost 300 million doesnt everyone think he will tell Omar stop no more signing and spending? I am worried we are done getting players after their big loss.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:20 pm

understood mraz -i’m just saying the perception – i was a scho supporter – like i supported delgado all last season – by the way jason mraz??? howzabout kerrykingskolnickiommi – yeah i know u got the name from some tween tv show lol

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Ah, so, ReyOrdonez: No arb offer for Beimel, so no draft pick for LA.

Cruz was offered arb (as was Brandon Lyons).

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Btw, the guy we got in the Schoe deal looks like Brian McCann

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:21 pm

btw does ne1 know if toasty joe is still alive?? i don’t know if he had a coronary after all the moves weve made – he hasn’t updated his site in 3 weeks

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:22 pm

more like buster brown lol

Nate W. December 12, 2008 at 10:22 pm

I wouldnt call a 27 year old averaging 4 BB/9 in AAA a prospect. I guess it frees up money to spend on another lefty reliever.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:23 pm

people still considered brandon knight a prospect and he was 30 lol

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Old friend Ty Wigginton is a free agent. Too bad he’s not a LOOGY. Maybe he could fill the old Damion Easley role?

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:25 pm

hebner he couldn’t field when he was with the mets lol btw how’s mike vail doin?

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:25 pm

I can’t speak for anyone else, but to the detriment of conversation I often use “prospect” when I should use “minor leaguer” simply to save syllables.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:26 pm

cabrera from the o’s was just non tendered

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:27 pm

i guess that means most of our farm team are minor leaugers lol

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:28 pm

guys today is yet another day in mets infamy
New York Mets traded Rusty Staub and Bill Laxton to the Detroit Tigers for Mickey Lolich and Billy Baldwin on December 12, 1975.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:30 pm

rustyjr, I haven’t heard from Mike Vail in a while. I googled him recently and for some reason found an article about how one should NEVER plug an X-Box into a surge protector though, always plug it directly into an outlet, this will extend it’s life. Fun fact.

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Is Reed Johnson a FA?

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:31 pm

lol hebner well alex trevino told me to sa “hi”

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Ooooooh… always liked Ty’s pop. And he’s learned some new tricks– now he can play anything but SS or C…

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 10:32 pm

wigginton

now he’d be a solid #6 hitter on this team

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:33 pm

bautista – the pitcher not the wrestler was non tendered

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Reed Johnson was re-signed by the Cubs.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:33 pm

ty has a hole in his glove that is worse than slappy and gotay’s combined

mdemaio December 12, 2008 at 10:34 pm

I wonder what it would take to pry a guy like Jesse Carlson away from Toronto…he’s got some nasty stuff…

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Dang… thanks Gravedigger for the info
Reed Johnson would have been PERFECT for the Mets…

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:35 pm

im surprised – no news if dirty sanchez was nontendered or not

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Ty is a great pick up for any team i would love if the mets brought him back along with thames but Ty is a gritty player the mets can use i wouldn’t mind it

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Wigginton as first man off the bench sounds grrrrrreat. Spelling Delgado against tough lefties, subbing for Castillo twice a week…

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 10:35 pm

rustyjr

yea i know but he can hit

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Yeah, I do think Ty could contribute to a winning Met team, and I think the Damion Easley role is an important one to fill, unless they’ve signed someone that I missed.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:35 pm

johny gomes and willy taveras are out there now flip

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:36 pm

oleo so could easly – and where did that get us?

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Jonny Gomes is an intresting guy… He’d be nice young guy to have…

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:38 pm

metsflip, no prob. I like looking things up, I should probably work in a library or something.

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Ok I finally have what we can do:
1. Sign Gomes
2. Trade for Marquis
3. Sign Ollie back
4. Sign one more DECENT bullpen guy
AND DONE

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:39 pm

when they say omar took a sledge hammer to the pen i disagree – he took a freekin patriot missle and blew the bejesus out of it !!

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:40 pm

flip something in my rusty sense is telling me that we will be getting lowe or sheets – i don’t know why but my rusty ribs are tingling !!! VIVA LA GRAND L’ORANGE !!!

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:40 pm

rustyjr: All teams need utility players of some sort–it’s when they’re starting half-the-year and getting 400-plus ABs that things get problematic (you hope for Tatis or 2006 Valentin, but more often you get… em… something else). Ty would make a more serviceable starter than most… and he can fill in at either corner OF position, 1B, 2B, or 3B.

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 10:40 pm

I don’t want to read through this whole thing… Ty was non-tendered? He’d be an incredibly perfect fit.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 10:41 pm

when the rays were in the playoffs gomes was on the bench being a cheerleader the whole playoffs not even a pinch hit no thank you to the cheerleader

if were going cheap i pefer guys like mixtures of TY or Marcus Thames proven players

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:41 pm

just wondering did anyone check by beerleauger to get their reaction to all of our transactions?

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 10:41 pm

say no to Ollie

he had a 5-1 lead early in the cubs game and couldnt throw a strike to save his life.

dont care how good Ollie is when he’s on his game, when he’s off he’s beyond awful

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Leiter: I almost cried when u said Valentin 2006…… I will forever love that guy……. He will forever be in my heart…….

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 10:42 pm

when hes on his game hes almost as dominate as santana or any left hander out there i believe in ollie and so should you

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:42 pm

true leiter but wiggy has been more of a everyday player lately – don’t know if he can adjust – imoho i think tony clark would be a better addition – he’s done that role for us b4

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Kellman

Yes, Ty was non-tendered, and I agree.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Dammit, Rusty– now I’m thinking about ribs.

Speaking of which, Blue Smoke? Shake Shack? Beer Islands? When did I miss the CitiField food announcements? I mean, daaaayamm.

(Am kinda waiting to see what sort of pizza makes its way to the new place, though– have always thought it a shame that the pizza at both ballparks IN NEW YORK was S’barros.)

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:43 pm

I thought Gomes was hurt… Ah well…
And ya the Mets might get Lowe or Sheets, but i perfer Lowe because Sheets is a freaking paper mache..

GetsByBuckner415 December 12, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Calling All Die Hard Met Fans,

If we want a world series, we have to take it into our own hands. We need Manny to bring us to the promise land. My friend and I are starting “The Manny Fund” we are putting in $100 each to start and need all fellow Met fans to do the same. If we can get 100,000 met fans to donate $100, I will personally present the check to the Wilpon’s with the condition that they spend it on Manny Ramirez. If they do not sign him, we get the money back. I will have legal documents drawn up if necessary to get this done. I feel if that we even show this kind of support in our effort to sign Manny, the Mets will have no choice put to pursue Manny in fear of alienating its fan base. Please post comments and let me know of your interest. If I see enough support, My friend and I will keep the ball rolling. I know this sounds insane and I am willing to take the good comments with the bad so fire away. Met fans together we can bring Manny home. Lets help Omar fight the Wilpon’s to do this. Lets Go Mets.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:44 pm

rustyjr

I stopped going to beerleaguer, too much pain, but I did hear that they pretty much universally panned the Ibanez signing.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:44 pm

i know hebner – there should be a rusty ribs a tutonnos or lombardi’s pizziaria even a real nathans woulda been nice

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 10:45 pm

marcus thames or TY no one else
tim redding is intresting also as a back up 5th starter if nothing else is around
if we want go above average pay for an outfielder then either abreu or bradley i pefer bradley and if you want to go big time for a hitter than of course who else but he big man himself MANNY RAMIREZ right now tho thames and Ty are looking more realistic

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:45 pm

getsbybuckner – u first and show us the cancelled check endorsed by fred – then i’m game lol

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Ty can play multiple positions, he rakes lefties, he has power, and he’s “tough”. Plus, people already like him. Can’t draw it up much better than that.

As for the Ollie opinions, he is increasingly becoming one of the more overrated pitchers in baseball. He has good, not great, stuff. His fastball is by no means electric. When his slider is on it’s incredibly good but it’s inconsistent from start to start and even inning to inning.

This idea that he is a top pitcher still comes from his 2004 season IMO. It’s the only real justification. His stats against the Phils this season were remarkable but the “big game” pitcher is hugely overblown. He’s a solid pitcher and isn’t even kind of worth the money he’s going to have to get. He’s way too inconsistent to be paid what he’ll be paid.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:46 pm

mi no gusta abreu eduardo – esto afraido of el wallos

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:47 pm

@eduardo

Thames is an older version of Gomes, with slightly more power, but less of an eye. Both swing for the fences and play serviceable, but ultimately lacking D.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:47 pm

gomes impressed me during the 07 playoffs against the yankmees

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Also, am not sure Bradley can play the OF more than 2-3 times a week (what he did with Texas). He’s a great hitter, but extremely tender-of-leg.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 10:49 pm

oliver pitched his best against above .500 teams if you were paying attention this season and on long stretches he carried the staff and the guy strikesout hitter plus the mets need legit lefit with manny lefty hitters in our division especially with the phillies and lefties only hit an average of .187 off of him the guy has taken the ball in big games and has always handed the pen the lead the guy can be trusted when it matters the most cant just turn that away a guy that has proven NY does not scare him away

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Kellman

I agree with your a$$e$$ment of Ollie, but my quandary is this: I think the Mets should have another lefty starter, I just am not sold on any one of the available FA’s (including OP). Curious to hear your opinion.

cleonsvan December 12, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Dare I say – what about Pat Burrell?

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 10:50 pm

gomes is terrible

he batted .182 last season. how can you even offer him a minor league deal at this point

cleonsvan December 12, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Is it true Capuano was also non-tendered? I would seriously take a flier on that lefty.

GetsByBuckner415 December 12, 2008 at 10:50 pm

If thats what you need to see in order to donate…thats what we will do. I am writing out my check tonight to the New York Mets with “The Manny Fund” in the memo line. Once I get the cancelled check endorsed by the Mets, I will provide a link for all to see. I am very serious about starting this.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:51 pm

“extremely tender-of-leg”

Now I’m hungry too.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:51 pm

tender of leg hard of fist btw – i don’t think freddie and saul are in much financial dire straits – my guess is if theyve been investing in this hedge fund for quite sometime – then they are at the upper portion of this ponzi scheme which means they were being paid dividends – thats my theory on this

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:52 pm

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm milton bradly – connect four mmmmmmmmmmmmmm really sneaky sis

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Pat Burrell is a joke
Second of all
He will be a distraction
Third of all
He’s a punk
Fourth of all
He will always be a Phreakin’ Philly
Fifth of all
He won’t accept….

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 10:52 pm

nobody likes abreu i dont especially but they say that he avoids the walls because he wants to stay healthy and the guy was teh best hitter in clutch situations in the AL in a 0-2 or 3-2 count im not trying to bring him to new york just giving him his props esecially that hes going to ask for good money i would pefer to look away but i wouldnt be so upset if we did end up with him but if were going to platton i would like thames starting here and there and coming off the bench as a pintch hitter with a power bat gomes can hit but he cant come thru clutch i bet like thames can the guys has power and any giving night help us in crucial moments i can say the same for TY

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:52 pm

cleon – PAT BURRELL – NEVER!!!

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Kinda curious about Burrell as well… it’d be like getting a righty Dunn, with 10 fewer HRs a year/more Philly-fan psychic damage.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:53 pm

metsflip

I agree with first through fourth of all,
but no one is exactly busting down doors to sign him (yet), he might just accept.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:54 pm

REMEMBER THE STORY FROM LAST YEAR WHEN BURRELL TOLD SOME METS FANS – HE’S LOVE TO PLAY FOR THE METS – THEN GIGGLES – PLUS HE HAS STUNK FOR MANY YEARS – last season midway – he caught lightening in a bottle

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 10:54 pm

burrell wouldnt be a bad idea but he cant play defense and hes going to ask atleast 10 million a season so no thanks

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 10:54 pm

That said, I’d rather have Dunn.

I think the Mets should look into C. Trent Rosecrans.

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 10:57 pm

I believe Omar will make the right moves regardless to who he signs or who he trades for, he’s a smart guy…

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:57 pm

he’s good??? he was almost booed out of philly – hell they woulda tied him to the next conrail train out of town

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 10:58 pm

cleonsvan

so is Manny plus Manny is also good for carrying this team into the playoffs.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:58 pm

heb what about gilderstern?

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 10:58 pm

rusty we can only get one or the other, together they’re dead.

PelfreyCyYoung09 December 12, 2008 at 10:58 pm

For some reason, I’m more excited about Putz than i am for K-Rod…is that wrong :o

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 10:59 pm

so true flip – i just want 1 more sp and a power bat ala manny or a carlos lee type btw ne1 think cliff le might be made available?

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Hebner,

That’s a fair point with the lefty, and it’d be ideal to have one. But, I don’t think I’d give Ollie 13+ million per year just so the team can have another lefty on the staff. I think it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

I like Ollie enough and wouldn’t mind him back for 10 or so per year. That’s just what the market is and I could stomach that. But for me, once you get into that 13+ range I need consistency. That’s why I am a fan of Lowe. Is there less “potential” in a single start than Ollie? I guess maybe, but it’d be a shock if Ollie put up a better overall season than Lowe in 2009.

Eduardo, I watched. That stuff is nice but doesn’t make a pitcher. They’re not all “big” games but they all count, and Ollie doesn’t show up enough to get the money he is CURRENTLY seeking. Hey, if his price lowers sure, sign him back. He’s not awful or anything. But there is a reason he put up a 4.22 ERA and a 100 OPS+ and not a 3.22 with a 120. Small sample sizes are nice, but his “big game” reputation has gotten out of hand and is now overshadowing the other 80% of his innings.

And regarding that “big game” rep… I think it is legitimate to an extent. He obviously has good stuff and probably focuses a little more in games he deems “big” (I remember on mother’s day he pitched a good game and SNY reported that pitching on mother’s day was a big deal to him, just as an example). But fact is, he started the biggest game of the season and didn’t exactly throw a gem. I’m not basing my opinion off of him on one game at all – just showing that he isn’t lights out as long as the situation is “big”.

Deaner December 12, 2008 at 10:59 pm

i’ll take wiggy and capuano

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:00 pm

alas poor bobby schoenweiss – i knew him well – btw heb u think ne1 got the shakespeare reference?

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:00 pm

oops i meant scotty lol

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:01 pm

ollie isnt getting 13 million in this market unless its coming from the yankees he’s going to have to settle for 10 mill a season

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:01 pm

pelf im excited about both – now we hae a big putz in the pen – and that gets me excited in a non barry manilow kind of way :P

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Most of the Phil fans I know had gotten over the booing-relationship with Pat the Bat around 2006… and most of the BeerLeaguers did NOT like the Ibanez signing.

He was more than a McReynolds to them.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:01 pm

eduardo – are we forgetting who his agent is now?

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 11:02 pm

u know leiter i like that obsevation about mcrenolds

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:03 pm

we have a heavy metal/salsa bullpenn now – kinda like the band puya !!!

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:03 pm

thats the same agent that cant get many teams to bid high for manny ramirez right now so i believe many teams arent going to throw big dollars at a guy like perez hes going to have settle for 10 mill a season trust me

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:05 pm

guys u think we take a chance on tim redding? he was lights out against us and i think he was the nats best pitcher down the stretch

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 11:05 pm

The nice thing about Putz in the 8th is that he’s going to come into jams. The case can EASILY be made that he (if healthy) is better than K-Rod. Fine, let K-Rod close. Putz coming in with two outs, two on in the 7th and getting a K would be outstanding.

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Guys I have the craziest thing in my mind that makes me go crazy:
COULD JJ AND KROD BE THE BEST SU AND CLOSER TANDUM OF ALL TIME?????????

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:05 pm

pelf – start singing copacabana – that could be k-rods new entrance theme lol

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:06 pm

PelfreyCyYoung09 December 12, 2008 at 11:06 pm

Forks28Attack December 12, 2008 at 11:08 pm

hey eduardo- why not sign every single FA that’s left?

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:08 pm

metsflip, a Philly fan will beg to differ with Madson & Lidge, but that’s a small sample. I hate to say it but Mariano setting up for Wetteland was pretty devastating. If Johnson & Johnson (sorry, that’s my Putz/Rod joke) can be anything close to that I’ll take it.

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 11:08 pm

Rusty: I know I’m just starting a pretty good conversation..
But could Krod and JJ be BETTER than Orosco and McDowell? Kind of crazy to think about…

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:08 pm

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 11:09 pm

Agreed, Kellman– K-Rod’s presence as the nominal closer lets Putz (the better pitcher when healthy) pitch the high-leverage stuff, and it makes K-Rod’s likely 1-inning limit palatable… if all goes well, Putz is our Gossage or Lyle figure.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:09 pm

1st off all perez is being linked to us same with cora same with pedro i bet you minaya is looking at redding at the same time same with thames and probbaly TY now so what are you talking about you know minaya he doesn’t like to spend big unless its proven guys or guys he knows already and the wilpons hate manny so hes not coming so what i said is realistic

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 11:10 pm

I always liked Redding because he pitches well against the Mets, but he’s not good.

tjones28 December 12, 2008 at 11:14 pm

I would have rather have taken a flier on a starting pitcher if I could manage to grab one. It’s quite obvious that the Mets lack the depth in the rotation.

Santana, Pelfrey, Maine are the only sure bets to make the rotation. Niese, Knight, Figueroa, Bostick…man is that weak or what?

Get me a trio of starters on the free agent market. Perhaps one solid 3 or 4 and a couple of cheap starters that have the ability to be a #5 or spot starter.

I think getting #4 in place is a must right now, but playing the patience game might benefit the Mets if they can somehow grab another 2008-Kyle Lohse type player in February or March on the cheap.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 11:17 pm

True, tjones28, but Lohse’s deal came in March (he was pitching himself at 10/yr and up into February).

No bargains are to be found right now– even in this economy, we’re still at seller’s market season.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:17 pm

cleon – u gettin wiggy with it?

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:17 pm

i forgot about Knight i really liked that 1 start he had for us i think hes a guy that can prove himself but he would be better off being long relief because guys like nelson and knight are good pitchers but 5 innings only pitchers as a 5th starters you need a guy that eats innings but with a rotation you always need more than 5 starters if you want to give your 1st 5 breaks here and there so these guys are good to keep around

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:18 pm

kyle loshe’s season last year – who’da thunk it – noy us mets fans lol

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 11:18 pm

TJones, I hope they take that philosophy to the offense as well. There are a ton of good players left with very little interest from other teams. Burrell, Dunn, O-Dog. These guys are good players and might end up cheap.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:18 pm

i rod isnt the greatest but if i have to see schneider ruin another rally i will be bald plus i see scnheider being the next heilman being booed off this team come half season

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:18 pm

rusty she probably did give that to him. I think the term is “beard.”

But back to baseball, does anyone think that the Dodgers non-tendered 4 players to create a little extra Manny money? Brazoban they probably won’t miss, but Berroa, Proctor and if healthy Saito are useful parts.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:19 pm

i was at knights debut – he was shaky in the first then pitched if i recall correctly 4 good innings before he faltered – then the pen blew the game

we have an outfield postion that is no lock so ty will get his playing time in the outfield at 2nd and gives david nights off at the third he will get plenty of play time a must sign same with cora to give reyes some nights off as well

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:22 pm

cleonsvan

are you Chevy Chase hitting some golf balls?

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 11:22 pm

Ty could borderline play every day. Just not at the same position. Give him a start against every single LH.

rustyjr December 12, 2008 at 11:23 pm

ok guys im headin to bed – maybe by the end of the weekend we will be high on signing lowe lol

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:23 pm

I’m down with Lowe

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:24 pm

I really like the idea of Ty returning. Otherwise, who are some legit options for the Damion Easley role?

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:24 pm

i think oliver deserves to come back but at our price along with garland and if not garland then marquis

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:26 pm

for easlys role you have maybe ramon martinez you saw what he did in the last few games you have alex cora has a ring and jerry hairston jr . he played the bench last year but he’s still 32 he might be trying to find a starting job some where

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Garland isn’t going to be worth the price he paid. There is value in throwing innings even if they’re average, but not at 10 million per year for multiple years.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:28 pm

Cora is a lefty, and we still have Marlon Anderson, but Hairston is intriguing. I could handle Hairston on this team.

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 11:28 pm

sign Manny, Garland and bring back pedro to appease Manny and get a backup infielder. with this bullpen and Manny in the lineup, we can afford to have a less than stellar rotation and still make the playoffs

plus omar can always acquire a SP at the deadline like a Justin Duchscherer

Reyes
Castillo/Murphy
Beltran
Manny
Wright
Delgado
Church
Schneider/Castro

Castro
backup IF
Murphy
Tatis
Reed

Santana
Garland
Pelfrey
Maine
Pedro (Figueroa, Niese and others in AAA)

Stokes
Sanchez
Parnell/darkhorse player
Feliciano
Green
Putz
Rodriguez

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:30 pm

oleo, except for perhaps “darkhorse player” there is only 1 lefty in your pen, and I think given 18 games against the Phillies we’ll need 2.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:31 pm

you know why i hated schneider so much last year and it wasn’t even all his fault is that jerry and willie tended to play schneider even on days lefties were pitching we were suppose to platoon becuase he simply cant play everyday he just doesnt fit that well in our lineup only against righties and at this point ive seen better hits off of robinson cancel than castro but if castro get be dedicated to staying in shape and doesnt swing at that outside pitch so much he can platoon other wise i would make him 3rd string ocming off the bench as pinch hitter having cancel platooning over castro since cancel seems to stay in shape more and looks to always hit the good pitch

jlaz89 December 12, 2008 at 11:32 pm

I would like to bring Ty back too, but he can’t play SS, and would probably be an albatross as 2B

jlaz89 December 12, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Eduardo, that’s the longest run-on sentence I’ve ever read…

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:35 pm

jlaz, true, but ideally you only need a SS for like 3 games. Hairston Jr. can play short, he could be signed instead of Wiggy, provides good defensive versatility, and more speed which can’t hurt.

Kellman December 12, 2008 at 11:35 pm

The problem with Schneider is that he’s supposed to be a stud defender and he wasn’t at all.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Castillo’s our 2B. He’s untradeable, and he’s got 3 years left. At the very least, he’s getting 50 percent of those ABs (with Murphy and another player– Ty? Hairston? Cora?– getting the rest).

@eduardo
If Castro could be dedicated to staying in shape, he could be our everyday catcher… and if I had wings, I’d be late for work a lot less.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:36 pm

exactly and hes getting paid 4 million what a shame

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:37 pm

cancel can run good for a catcher and seems to keep his head in the game and can hit also he deserves more playing time as hes a better all around player than castro

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:38 pm

Hairston would be much cheaper likely, he made half a mil last year, Ty made $4.35 mil.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 11:39 pm

CAN Hairston play short? I know I’ve seen him at 2B, and the OF…

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:39 pm

hairston jr. is a good fit but he most likly will look for a starting job being only 32 but if he wants to play the bench roll he’’s the guy

him and thames seem the best fits for the mets right now and if not hairston then cora

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:41 pm

I don’t know if he CAN, but he HAS, he played 34 games there last year filling in for injured old friend Jeff Keppinger, who also surprisingly has played short.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 11:42 pm

You had to remind me of Keppinger, eh?

Okay, I’m feeling like so:

1)Wiggy
2)Hairston
3)Someone else, and a whole lotta LeiterMilner grumblin’

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 11:43 pm

willie harris would of been a good utilty player for us to bad the nats had to offer him a contract of 3 mill and he accepted

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 11:45 pm

I’d have been curious to sign Willie Harris… or for that matter, Scott Eyre as our LOOGY. Alas, these Met killers remain so…

The Amazings December 12, 2008 at 11:45 pm

I think castro can be a great catcher, hes might not hit above .300 but hes got alot of pop in his bat, pretty good defensively and has a good arm behind the plate. I think he can be a .265/.270 20 HR 70 RBI man. With only 144 at-bats last year he had 11 HR’s and 143 at-bats this year he had 7 HR’s I say give him the start jobing as opening day catcher. Better then having Schnieder who bats .210 and goes on a hot streak for 5 games then stops for half the season.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:46 pm

I don’t know enough about defensive metrics to speak intelligently about the defense of either Wiggy or Hairston. Offensively, their career OBP are exactly the same! (.330), Wiggy more slugging, Hairy more speed. Which would this Met team be better served by?

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Amazings:

The question isn’t his bat– I’m a huge Castro fan, personally… WHEN HE’S PLAYING. (There’s a reason he hasn’t put up 250-plus ABs in a season ever… and it’s not his hitting, or even his defense.)

TilMetsDoUsPart December 12, 2008 at 11:49 pm

They’re going to deal him and someone else for Marquis.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:54 pm

I just found out, this is K-Rod’s contract:

09:$8.5M, 10:$11.5M, 11:$11.5M, 12:$17.5M option ($3.5M buyout)

That’s a heck oven option.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 11:54 pm

Since he’d be coming off the bench, and not likely as a defensive replacement (given current staffing)… would prefer the power– and ability to play corner OF– of Wigs.

Am kind of an idiot regarding the latest in defensive statistics, as well. If memory serves, and it may not (lived in Balto for a while), Hairston’s IF defense was solid. His speed equated to nice range. Whereas Wigs… well, my memory doesn’t serve HIM so well.

GravediggerHebner December 12, 2008 at 11:58 pm

Good point, would be better to have the pinch hit HR potential as opposed to the pinch run SB. The only other possible hitch is Wiggy made just over $4mil last year, while Hairy made $500 K. Since Wiggy was non-tendered I suppose a pay cut is inevitable. Sign him up.

Deaner December 12, 2008 at 11:59 pm

i would hope if they are going to use this reliever in another deal, they would get someone better than marquis.

Deaner December 13, 2008 at 12:01 am

wiggy is tough, too. something this team is sorely lacking.

with green, putz, krod and wiggy, this team would have a few more players with ballz

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 13, 2008 at 12:06 am

Also, Hairston looks to be close to re-upping with the Red ma-cheen. (See: MLB Trade Rumors)

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 12:13 am

deaner

which is another reason why the Mets need Manny. not only is he a deadly offensive player but he has huge cojones

GravediggerHebner December 13, 2008 at 12:15 am

I don’t see that Hairston tidbit (all I can find is “3 teams interested in Hairston” from 12/9) but I’m very tired and my eyes are the first thing to go.

I guess the last question I’ll ask as I say goodnight is, would Wiggy come here for the reduced role combined with the proverbial “chance to win” or would he go elsewhere for more playing time?

k-mets December 13, 2008 at 12:57 am

Well, I cannot see this as a salary dump when they are picking up 1.6 Million out of 3.6 Million owed this year according to ESPN.

PeckWizzle December 13, 2008 at 1:54 am

I like Wiggy. Who knows, maybe we can even start him at 2B if we sacrifice a little D for Castillo’s inability to hit a ball out of the infield. He could hit 25 homers in a starting role. Things are looking up for Lowe/Perez for the mets now that Burnett signed with the yanks. I don’t know about this Robertson guy though. maybe we can package him for a useful starter?

jlaz89 December 13, 2008 at 1:56 am

How do you know Wigginton is tough?

PeckWizzle December 13, 2008 at 2:00 am

and we’ve gotta be looking at Ohman now for the other lefty reliever. the guy’s good and we could sneak in and grab him since its been quiet on his front. the pen would pretty much be air tight.

Mariners005 December 13, 2008 at 2:11 am

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 7:24 am

reyes got non tendered and i dont think anderson will be back there going after alex cora which i wouldnt mind and maybe jerry hairston jr. and they got jeremy reed from teh seattle trade he can hit left handed

your right ill band myself from lineup writing for 30min lol

carmine_riccardi December 13, 2008 at 8:16 am

This is so awesome… we could have got a bucket of balls and some seeds and I’d be happy with it. So far minaya is treating our bullpen like the part in goodfellas where they’re wiping out everyone involved in the lufthansa heist who may snitch. I love it.

lil pelf December 13, 2008 at 8:23 am

i think the goal here is to not bring back more than 2 mets bullpen guys. smart idea. i will be very dissapointed though if we do not get either two starters at the level of sheets, lowe, and ollie, or one and manny.

stickguy December 13, 2008 at 8:33 am

well, there are only about 2 of the regular pen guys left anyway (sanchez and stokes). The rest have either been traded, or let go as FAs

should be pelnty of competition in ST. May the best arms win, and hopefully the losers have options!

I think they need 1 more solid set up guy. Preferably a lefty.

So, sign Guardado and move on to the SP and position players.
Wiggington can be added to the list of possible RH powerish bats. Just have to figure out where he would play.

so, sign sheets and another bat (LF), and/or trade for Molina, and the team is pretty much done.

pen sorts itself out in ST, and quite likely the 5th starter is found then too.

Or trade marlon for marquis and have the spots theoreticlaly filled.

stickguy December 13, 2008 at 8:38 am

give the ball to Garland for 33 starts and he will likely give you 200 innings. Of course, that is barely over 6 per start..

however, they are likely to be 200 lousy innings. And he only is still going to be in by the 6th/7th if the team has scored a bunch of runs.

if you want almost guaranteed mediocrity, just get marquis and pocket the 5 million difference in salary, and save 2-3 years.

he can eat 200 mediocre innings just as easily as garland.

Bucknerfan December 13, 2008 at 8:56 am

I do not think the team will go into the season with only 1 lefthanded option (Feliciano) outta the pen.

youthmovement December 13, 2008 at 8:56 am

1. Lefty reliever
2. 2 SP, 1 of which is a lefty
3. Wiggy – LF and back up 1B & 3B. Wiggy will run through a wall – exactly what we need. Can put a thumping on the ball from the 6 hole in front of Church.

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 9:12 am

the Mets really have 2 choices

sign Manny
get 2 mediocre starters
get a backup IF
get a decent LHRP

or

sign Lowe or Sheets and a mediocre starter
get a LF (Wiggy, Thames, Rivera)
get a backup IF
get a decent LHRP

Bucknerfan December 13, 2008 at 9:16 am

25 guys: 12 or 13 pitchers
Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Starter TBD, another Starter TBD or Niese

Krod, Putz, Feliciano, Stokes, Sanchez, Green = 11:

then speculation 2 or 3 of: Kunz, Parnell, Muniz, new lefty

Unless you believe Stokes, Sanchez or Green will not be here, there is not much room to fit much else.

buddha December 13, 2008 at 9:18 am

re: Abreu

I’m not sure what running through walls has over a .370 obp the last two seasons and a career .405 obp.

lil pelf December 13, 2008 at 9:21 am

i will be immensely dissapointed if we only sign one decent starter and no manny

jshaps77 December 13, 2008 at 9:30 am

We have no need whatsoever for Wigginton. Yeah he may be “tough”, but he’s tough and not a very good baseball player. Also Wigginton and Tatis are virtually the same player…we don’t need to double up on that mediocrity.

A Cora/Thames tandem might be nice. I’d really love Dunn, but I don’t see that happening.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain December 13, 2008 at 9:32 am

Wow, will SNY and Jocelyn Pierce have anyone to play golf with in Spring Training? I think her whole foursome was eliminated via trade.

LIMetfan74 December 13, 2008 at 9:36 am

THE METS ARE NOT GETTING MANNY!
You guys can say it all you want it is not going to happen!!

x-nady December 13, 2008 at 9:39 am

carmine_riccardi,

Nice Good Fellas reference! I can hear that Clapton tune now as bodies turn up. lol.

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 9:40 am

jshaps77

wigginton batted .285 with 23 HR last season in only 386 AB. that is much better than Tatis

also here are some red flags regarding Adam Dunn,

in 2601 plate appearences with 2 strikes

BA – .150
OBS – .273

thats about 80 points lower than the league average. take away the full counts and his BA is around .130 with an OBS of around .240

sure the guy can hit HR and BB but what use is that when the guy doesn’t know how to hit

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain December 13, 2008 at 9:43 am

I just realized if Castillo is traited, there may not be anyone left to boo on opening day.

I think there may be a lot of frustrated fans who many disappointed! LOL

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain December 13, 2008 at 9:45 am

woops, traited –> traded

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 9:45 am

the best hitter in the market besides manny with men on base with an 0-2 count or 3-2 count is bobby abreu i dont like his defense but he stays away from the wall to make sure he stays healthy which most anaylst say is for the best and the guy had 100 runs and 100 rbi’s and at 1 point carried the yankees im not a huge fan but if he takes a 2 year deal for not 2 much money i wouldnt mind

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 9:47 am

have the mets considered signing Saito?? hes now a free agent. Are the mets done making moves for relievers or is there still work to be done? Also…its looking like we mite be able to get Manny for a great price…lets do it

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 9:48 am

i wouldnt mind this

sign abreu

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 9:49 am

if the dodgers move on the mets have a chancce but i have a feeling the bankees are going to give that man the money he wants

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 9:49 am

I mean if we could sign Manny for a 2 year 32 million dollar deal i dont see why not…

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 9:50 am

he’s not even buding at 2 years 45 mill he will never take that contract

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 9:50 am

Yanks dont sign Red Sox players…they arent getting Manny

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 9:51 am

lets hope not beccause the’ve done enough to disrespect the people of new york

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 9:51 am

hes not budging…but NO team will offer him that money…he’ll have to give in at some point

dwright5_godsend December 13, 2008 at 9:51 am

I’m not sure if they are looking at Saito, since we have 2 closers already and he’s coming off an injury. As for us being done, not by a long shot. Omar has said numerous times that he will continue to make moves that improve the club, even if it means waiting a bit to see how the market plays out. I still think Chad Cordero will be a Met next season because Omar loves that guy, and if he can return to form then why not? He said he is also looking for another RH bat, wherever and whomever that may be.

Omar has done a great job so far, but some of you guys need to chill out because he is not done…its only December!

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 9:53 am

i really disliked bobby abreu a week ago but hes really looking good with his stats the more i look at them especially now that hes not a type a no more and dont have to give up picsk for him and the phillies had to give up picks on a 37 year old player for 3 years 30 million lol

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 9:53 am

Chard Cordero could be a phenominal pickup and its worth the risk at this point

Bucknerfan December 13, 2008 at 9:53 am

Sounds like they’re getting desperate, would the Padres take some sort of deal around Church, FMart, Niese, & Parnell for Peavy?

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 9:53 am

abreu might be afraid of walls but he would be the perfect #2 hitter

he’d be a lock to bat .280 16 HR 80 RBI 100 R high OBP so not only would he let Reyes steal but he can actually drive him in instead of just moving him over

not to mention he’s a better fielder than Murphy/Tatis anyway

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 9:54 am

i wouldnt trade Church Fmart Niese and Parnell for Peavy…thats giving up way too much

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 9:54 am

airfeet

what about Johnny Damon???

JoseReyesForPresident December 13, 2008 at 9:55 am

i agree he will have to,i doubt any team will give up that kind of money…i see the dodgers giving it to him just cuz what he did for them late in the season while taking them to the playoffs.

rustyjr December 13, 2008 at 9:55 am

uh what teams did damon and boggs play for

dwright5_godsend December 13, 2008 at 9:55 am

Airfeet-
Yanks don’t sign Red Sox? So Johnny Damon and Roger Clemens weren’t Boston favorites before donning pinstripes? If the Yankees want Manny, they will go after Manny. However, Manny might not want to play for the Yanks…

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 9:55 am

forget peavy that dudes blowing his arm out in 2-3 years fmart church and parnell isnt worth that , that being said i really beleive omar could of had peavy with what he gave up for the putz deal but we would of lost smith and heilman with bullpen help in return and a bigger hole to fix and no trade chips to get a setup man so i feel like if peavy would of said he would go to new york we could of had him but it aint worth it

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 9:56 am

why would you want Johnny Damon? he sux

Bucknerfan December 13, 2008 at 9:56 am

Maybe I misspoke, I said “around” meaning would there be some type of combination that would be acceptable to both sides involving these guys.

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 9:56 am

yeah thats a decent point i guess…idk what to say

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 9:56 am

airfeet

no i dont want Damon but you said the Yankees dont sign Red Sox players and last time i checked Johnny Damon is on the yankees

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 9:58 am

mets need bobby abreu at this point

100 runs 100 rbis best hitter in the AL last season with men on base he had 22 stolen bases pretty good and with santana recruiting i bet he will come at a discount back home to the NL east and have a little pay back for the philly fans

rustyjr December 13, 2008 at 9:58 am

hey matt winter meetings r over can we go back to the old comments forum?

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 9:58 am

i like Parnell…i think he could be real Money on our pen this year..i mean real solid…I would deal Fmart Niese and maybe Evans (or lower prospect) for Peavy MAYBE

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 9:58 am

dont forget Babe Ruth

dwright5_godsend December 13, 2008 at 9:59 am

Bucknerfan-
I think that package hurts us more than anything. F-Mart we can live without because he will not contribute until 2010 at the earliest and Flores looks to be even better. But Niese, Parnell, and Church just creates more holes. Yes, we get one of the best in return but then we need another corner OF, RHP, and a LHP for the rotation, which the market isn’t very good for right now. No doubt Peavy is ten times better than all of those guys, but packaging them for one man just creates too many holes…

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:00 am

peavys delivery is 2 harsh to watch and he’s not going to last our prospects need to grow and im waiting for them i love youth movements no trading prospects sign through free agency

kistics December 13, 2008 at 10:00 am

I wonder how much impact Wilpons losing money to that Ponzi Scheme will have on FA signings

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 10:00 am

F mart will be ready to play mid season this season….mark my words

JoseReyesForPresident December 13, 2008 at 10:01 am

yes old forum back even though these shows the exact time lol!

jshaps77 December 13, 2008 at 10:01 am

@oleosmirf – I still like that you can write in pen 40hr/385+obp when it comes to DUnn, but you make good points. Perhaps Abreu would be a better fit.

As far as Tatis and Wigginton go…here’s their career 162 game averages as per baseballreference.com:

AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS+

547 78 145 31 2 21 82 10 4 61 132 .264 .346 .445 102 – Tatis

561 72 152 34 2 23 79 7 4 45 110 .270 .330 .460 105 – Wigginton

You would be hard pressed to find any two players anywhere with numbers that even.

vic79 December 13, 2008 at 10:01 am

Sooooo Salary Dump here …AAA call up…………..so who is the new 2nd lefty in the pen…………still alot of FA’s

dwright5_godsend December 13, 2008 at 10:01 am

Parnell is a gamer…he was actually one of the only ones (other than Smith) that I trusted last season when he came in. For a rookie to look that good is pretty impressive, and I expect the same from Kunz once Jerry actually gives him some work. They just need to focus on throwing strikes more, but if Warthen could get Pelfrey and Perez to pound the strike zone then I’m sure he can do wonders with these two.

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 10:01 am

Murphy should be starting at 1b and hitting .330 this season…i really wish we could move Delgado and his .260 BA for something useful in return and continue moving forward like we have done so far at the start of this offseason

dwright5_godsend December 13, 2008 at 10:04 am

Airfeet-
That would be awesome if he was, but I think he would have to bat around .350 with 10 HR and 50 RBI through the first 80 games in AAA for Omar to consider bringing him up at such a ripe age…he may be a Sept. call-up in my opinion, but he needs to see better pitching first and AAA is the place for him to do that.

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 10:05 am

jshaps77

to think that Tatis is capable of putting up those numbers again is crazy.

i mean he was a great feel good story but i wouldnt be shocked if he batted .220 this season

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:06 am

if were not getting manny or tex Delgado must stay he is our Power Bat

Reyes
castillo/Murphy
Wright
Abreu

JoseReyesForPresident December 13, 2008 at 10:08 am

excuse me amount*

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 10:08 am

this team still does need a bat…lets not forget that

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 10:09 am

airfeet

Murphy batting .330 for a full year is crazy. Wright hasnt even done that yet.

if i had a guess murphy would bat around .280 this year

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:09 am

i just sed bobby abreu he hit the best with men on base last season he belongs in the cleanup so he can bring guys home with beltran and delgado following

jshaps77 December 13, 2008 at 10:09 am

@oleosmirf – I don’t see what’s so crazy about it, he just did it last year and he was coming off of a few years of no major league baseball. Stands to reason he may be more prepared this year. And it’s not that I don’t think Wigginton will put up better numbers given similar ABs, it’s just not enough of a difference to employ both when we need a better OF and a IF utility guy.

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 10:11 am

Olesmurf…i mean it isnt crazy…no one has any clue what any players that come out of the minors are gonna bat..thinking Pujols was gonna hit 30 HRS his rookie year was CRAZY…anything is possible and lets not forget Murphy hit what like .315 in 150 ABs last year…its POSSIBLE he’ll hit over .300 for a full season

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain December 13, 2008 at 10:11 am

NOT that I would really WANT to go that way, but if I was an “older” pitcher who already made enough money, but want to stack on the wins to his record to make him more attractive for HOF considerations (or if he is already HOF bound, just to pad his win count).

Think UNIT, think SMOLTZ. think PETTITE

Again, I am not saying I would want any of these guys, but with out bull pen now…. you gotta think that bodes well for attracting that sort of pitcher.

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:12 am

mets against right hand pitching

reyes
castillo
wright
abreu
beltran
Delgado
Church

mets against left hand pitching

reyes
castillo

abreu
beltran
Delgado
Tatis
Cancel/Castro

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 10:13 am

jshaps77

theres a reason Tatis was out of baseball for so long. He was awful. besides 2008 his only other good years were 98 99 and ‘00

theres a much better chance Tatis hits himself into AAA then repeating those numbers again

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 10:17 am

airfeet

.300 is a lot different then .330

also Abreu is not a cleanup hitter, he doesnt have the power anymore.

he’d bat 2nd or 6th here

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:18 am

you right he doesnt have the power but the guy was the best in the AL with runners in scoring postion and 0 -2 and 3-2 counts that would be good in the cleaup which he would come thru clutch with clutch hits and get on base after bringing guys home then letting beltran and delgado sending them out the park

SciosciaHeartburnDiarrhea December 13, 2008 at 10:18 am

Daniel Cabrera would be the perfect project signing ala ‘06 Ollie Perez.. His stuff is filthy but his control is off like Seattle Mariners-era Randy Johnson. He’d be a great #4 or #5

jshaps77 December 13, 2008 at 10:19 am

@oleosmirf – All I’m saying is there’s no reason to dole out good money to league average players when we already have guys on the roster of putting up league average numbers. Better to spend that money on holes that aren’t filled.

Bucknerfan December 13, 2008 at 10:21 am

I don’t know actually looking at our lineup written down like Eduardosmets has it for some reason makes me realize how much we are lacking a big bat in that lineup. Fred won’t bring in Manny so who else fits the bill?

LIMetfan74 December 13, 2008 at 10:21 am

The more and more I read it looks as if Omar is going to bring this same line up back. That is a huge mistake they were the second reason for the collapse I know they scored the second most runs in the league but the unclutch hitting killed us. Too not birng in another bat is crazy. You can not think you are going to catch lighting in a bottle twice with Tatis and I know Murphy has looked good but you stiil dont know what you are going to get out of over the long haul. you dont know what Church will be and which Delgado will we
see?? Do I even have to mention Castillo???

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 10:26 am

jshaps77

we have 2 huge question marks in LF.

1) is murphy the real deal
2) can tatis put up similar numbers

if Murphy and Tatis can’t do it what do you do play jeremy reed in LF??

keep tatis on the bench and let him start once a week and platoon murphy and wigginton in LF and castillo/wigginton/murphy at 2B

wigginton kills 2 birds with one stone and is a great option if Manny cannot be had

Bucknerfan December 13, 2008 at 10:27 am

100% agree. to have a question in right (who knows what to expect) a question in left (what do you expect in 2nd season for Murphy and what will Tatis give you again), slappy at 2nd (Nough Said), an almost auto out catching (with the other almost always hurt) delgado never going to repeat what he did at the end of the summer, sounds like a recipe for disaster, and a rookie as your fifth starter leaves too many possible holes.

Forks28Attack December 13, 2008 at 10:27 am

The reason Philly fans aren’t very friendly in regards to Abreu is because the guy flat out refused to bat anywhere in the lineup but third. He wouldn’t have a place in this lineup if thats his mentality again!

SciosciaHeartburnDiarrhea December 13, 2008 at 10:29 am

MAJOR cause for concern Mets fans

“Panicked investors scrambled desperately yesterday to determine whether their life savings had been wiped out after a Wall Street legend allegedly admitted blowing as much as $50 billion in what is emerging as the largest Ponzi scheme in history.

Among several big-name investors who trusted former Nasdaq Chairman Bernard L. Madoff with their cash were New York Mets owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, who may have lost as much as $500 million in the scheme, sources said”

- NY Post

Forks28Attack December 13, 2008 at 10:30 am

Does anyone think it’s very farfetched to deal Delgado to San Fran? They need a power bat and I’d rather get him shipped while his stock is high. Maybe deal him for a 3/4/5 pitcher?

Better yet, anyway we could deal Delgado/Schneider/Prospect for Molina and say….Sanchez or Lowry?

JoseReyesForPresident December 13, 2008 at 10:32 am

fred cant get his money back?

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:32 am

if they were to do that i would trade them for molina and sanchez

then sign manny
let murphy and evans play 1st
sign rich auirlla to help them out

sign lowe

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 10:35 am

forks

the Mets arent trading Delgado

Forks28Attack December 13, 2008 at 10:36 am

You would take Sanchez? I’d like to see Lowry. Great lefty who’d fit nicely 4/5

BiggieSmalls December 13, 2008 at 10:36 am

Does anyone think it’s very farfetched to deal Delgado to San Fran? T

Not farfetched to see Delgado move at this point. More likely tot he AL where he can DH.

Angels look like a good match if/when they lose Tex.

mdemaio December 13, 2008 at 10:37 am

This lineup is filled with question marks – which Delgado shows up? Was Church’s poor showing in August/September a slump, or something more? Will Murphy adjust to ML pitchers as they learn his weaknesses?

This team needs another consistent, take-it-to-the-bank productive bat. It also needs a horse to fill the number 2/3 slot in the rotation who’s not afraid to take the ball in a big game and can give you 200 innings, and a left-handed reliever who doesn’t get lit up by righties. Can they fill all three in their budget?

My gut says they’ll go cheap – sign an adequate pitcher and gamble with what they have offensively, reasoning that if they won only half of the games they lost via the bullpen last year they’d have won the division. I think that’s a mistake…it’s not reasonable to expect the same years from Delgado and Tatis as you got last year, you don’t know what you’ll get from Murphy and Church, and the lower third of the order is awful. While I agree that the bullpen was their biggest weakness last year, and they’ve done a great job sealing up the back end of it, it is by no means the only issue on this roster. I hope they’re prepared to go all the way in this rebuild…

vic79 December 13, 2008 at 10:37 am

For offense they are just going to get a IF like Cora and a OF like Baldelli………….I am for Wigginton if he comes at a good price……I bet he would love to come back……………on the other hand he may get ALOT more money playing for a team like the Twins

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:37 am

what about since the bankees like spending so much money they spell us from castillo and take delgado and castillo for robinson cano lol

Forks28Attack December 13, 2008 at 10:39 am

I doubt they’ll trade Delgado too, it just makes too much sense to me though. Delgado’s stock is high, we have no place for Murphy ATM so we could stick him at first.

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:40 am

how about a delgado for erik bedrad since i doubt the orioles will win the sweep stakes on tex but how is bedrads health? doesnt he always get hurt?

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:42 am

wow he doesnt he play for the orioles any more sorry lol we just did a trade with the marines i doubt they would do that for delgado now

Forks28Attack December 13, 2008 at 10:42 am

If the Angels don’t sign Tex, they’d be absolutely depleted at 1B, down right awful.

Delgado, Prospect to Angels for Joe Saunders? Lefty starter

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:43 am

i would pull the trigger if were getting manny right after that

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 10:43 am

but the Mets arent going to trade Delgado

Philnym31 December 13, 2008 at 10:44 am

Did anyone else hear Omar on Mike Francesa’s show this past week? I find it very curious how he conveniently never mentioned Carlos Delgado’s name while he was talking about his everyday players. Also, he stated that we need to find a way to play Daniel Murphy.

Hmmm… let’s do the math?

therealsince86 December 13, 2008 at 10:45 am

delgado for Figgins and Morales. Figgins plays lf until we can unload castillo.

Forks28Attack December 13, 2008 at 10:45 am

oleosmirf,
where are you getting your information from??

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:46 am

i would trade delgado and neise
for ervin santana

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:48 am

i dont want to give up no legit position player prospects as they always have more vaule if there legit and you can always get a starter throught free agence plus it gets rid of delgado and santana has a brighter future than neise

therealsince86 December 13, 2008 at 10:49 am

you could have a lineup with Wiggy, Murphy, and Molina and trade Delgado and Schnieder and still save money.

BiggieSmalls December 13, 2008 at 10:49 am

I love that Omar went Nuclear with the bull pen.. Agree with the recent sentiment that the daily 8 need an airing out as well.

He needs to shake up the every day… Catcher, 2B , LF and 1B.. Murph should have the Kevin Mitchell Super sub role and tatis should be bench.. not platoon..

JoseReyesForPresident December 13, 2008 at 10:50 am

Dec. 12 (Bloomberg) — The New York Mets baseball team said in a statement today that the arrest of Bernard Madoff for defrauding investors “does not affect” plans for the team or for its new stadium in Queens.

Thank god.

Forks28Attack December 13, 2008 at 10:52 am

I’d want Dunn in LF but he is such a rally breaker..we’re all about the rally ah haha.

911nafstem December 13, 2008 at 10:52 am

Bye Show and Sh#&, thanks for nothing

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 10:53 am

the fact that Omar loves Delgado and will not trade him especially when he comes cheap, has 1 year left on his deal and came off an MVP type season where he tied for 2nd in the NL in HR and with no viable replacement in sight

BiggieSmalls December 13, 2008 at 10:53 am

they should do a PR that it wont affect our Off season spending.

My bad on my previous ost .. WHEN Delgado gets moved Murph goes to First base.

therealsince86 December 13, 2008 at 10:54 am

Reyes, Murphy, Beltran, Wright, Wiggy, Church, Molina, Castillo. That’s a deep lineup.

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:54 am

show was good against lefties but i wont forgive him for giving that homer up to WES HELMS come on no type of ballz and then he tears about it on camera afterwards getttt outa townnnn before we throw you out
glad hes gone

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 10:55 am

you only get rid of delgado if your going after tex or manny no other reason other wise i will be pist

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 10:58 am

trs86

why get rid of Delgado to bring in Molina??

the cleanup hitter is much more important than the 8th hitter

jeenyus245 December 13, 2008 at 10:59 am

therealsince86

that lineup looks really empty without delgado and you still have castillo in there

nostradamus December 13, 2008 at 10:59 am

put manny or murph at first. trade delgado for pitching.

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 11:02 am

if we are to trade delgado for pitching then we have no choice and no reason why not to go after tex which i know manny is better but atleast tex is going to give us a 1st baseman for the future and great defense and switch hitter i would take that over manny right now for the sake of the future

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 11:03 am

if the Mets sign Manny and do nothing else to the lineup then the only weak part of our lineup is our defensively sound C who bats 8th.

in a late game situation all you have to do is pinch hit for Schneider with either Tatis or Castro or even Murphy if Castillo is starting

no reason to leave a gaping ho

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 11:03 am

gaping hole in the middle of the lineup do upgrade our 7th and 8th hitter

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 11:04 am

imagine Tex and Wright together 2 leaders shining i get excited just thinking about it

SciosciaHeartburnDiarrhea December 13, 2008 at 11:10 am

Not a fan of Wigginton or Cora. Angel Berroa on the the other hand is a different story. I think he’d at the very least be an upgrade on Marlon Anderson/Argenis Reyes

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 11:11 am

trade delgado schneider and neise and kunz

for molina sanchez and randy winn

we take on half of schneider contract and take over most of molinas contract

then offer Tex 8 years 180 million

oleosmirf December 13, 2008 at 11:14 am

eduardo

Omar wouldnt give up Niese for Putz why would he take him, our clean-up hitter and our starting catcher for an upgrade at catcher, a #4 starter at best and a decent OF

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 11:15 am

now that i think of it we really cant trade delgados contract and get players in return with equal salary that doesnt free money room for players like manny or tex we would have to trade delgado to a team thats iwlling to give us a proven pitcher or hitter that makes rookie money

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 11:16 am

yeah but sanchez is better than niese so far he can pitch to molina is better for 1 season than schneider for 3 seasons and randy winn steals and play defense and is aswitch hitter and it gets rid of delgado and makes room for TEX a long term soultion

SciosciaHeartburnDiarrhea December 13, 2008 at 11:19 am

eduardosmets…thats a garbage deal. No way I’d do that..especially while giving up kunz and niese. good thing you’re not running the mets!

Teixiera is NOT coming to the Mets so you can forget about that. There’s more of a chance that manny ramirez will be in LF than Tex at 1B ’cause Omar has been forever in love with Manny.

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 11:20 am

yeah unfortuantly we got robbed so mannys not coming unless theres more addition by subtraction

MeesesGlokmah December 13, 2008 at 11:22 am

I don’t see why people want to get rid of Delgado so much. Is everybody spelling doom for him next season or something? He was great the second half of last season, and who’s to say that won’t carry over into next season? I know Tex would be a nice upgrade, but I’m honestly fine with Delgado as our first baseman.

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 11:24 am

i just cant wait for omars next move im tired of talking about hopes and dreams we all have

Airfeet December 13, 2008 at 11:25 am

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 11:31 am

the royals want to get rid of jose guillen badley to free up some money so they can get furcal you think they would still be interesed in castillo for Guillen i know they have mike aviles maybe offer nick evans also for aviles

eduardosmets December 13, 2008 at 11:32 am

how low should the mets go in trading castillo is a bad contract of guillen worth it ?

snowmanrt December 13, 2008 at 11:37 am

Why the hell would we trade delgado for a #4 starter?? That makes no sense, he may have started slow last year but he carried us through the second half of the year

kingman 26 December 13, 2008 at 11:41 am

Guillen is worth NOTHING and we should not get him under any circumstances. His stats are mediocre, and he is possibly the worst personality in baseball. Note how many teams he has been on.

You know that Castillo is Johan Santana’s best friend right? If you noticed, we signed him at 2B before we even traded for Johan. As much as he was terrible last year I think it was worth it. Now we just have to find someone who’ll take him.

I’m not a fan of Orlando Hudson but anything is better than what we currently have. If Omar can get Furcal to play 2B for us I think that would be perfect. The guy is a beast when he’s healthy and the perfect #2 hitter in our lineup

The Astros non-tendered Wiggy, which leaves a hole at 3B. Oswalt volunteered to re-structure his contract, Drayton said no. Read between the lines: Astros hurting for $. Dan Murphy’s best position is 3B, put Niese in this trade for cheap $ and dump Castillo’s salary which is still a lot less than what we would get back – Roy Oswalt. If we have to, throw in Evans, Kunz or Sanchez.

They get Murphy, Niese, Castillo and a pick’em of Kunz/Evans/Sanchez. We get Oswalt for the 2 slot, opens up 2B for Hudson, and then bring back Pedro on the cheap for #5 and have Parnell / Figueroa / Wright for back-ups.

Now you sign a lefty bat for the OF. Either Dunn for LF, or Abreu for RF with Church in LF. I’m not crazy about either one, but if you sign Dunn, you have an option for 1st base in 2010.

youthmovement I would sign up for that trade although I doubt they would take castillio unless we ate like 12 million over the 3 years and maybe try to sign daniel cabrera or someone to fill in the 5th spot would be an awesome rotation. Great 1-2 punch in santana and oswalt possible even a 1,2,3 with big pelf and if maine can give us similar 07 production and cabrera gives you league average or better plus putz krod greene our pitching would be awesome and we still might be able to sign manny.

longislandmetsfan December 13, 2008 at 12:45 pm

That trade is insane…There is NO way that they will move Murphy or Niese…Nice pipe dream, but absolutely not happening….Do you have any idea how highly they think of both of those guys? They view murphy as a soon to be everyday player, probably a #3 hitter…They view Niese as a soon to be Big Pelf…Then on top of it you want to add in a Kunz or an Evans??? Kunz maybe, but Evans? Do you really want no one to play 1st base after Delgado’s gone next year??

youthmovement December 13, 2008 at 1:25 pm

I’m not sold on Niese yet and Murphy doesn’t have a position. Evans, Kunz and now Sanchez are spare parts…to get one of the top pitchers in the game, you have to make it worthwhile.

Mel Rojas December 13, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Id take Wigginton to play left. Play Murphy at LF second third and 1st whenever they need days off. Havent we been saying that we need a gritty player like wiggy? bat him 7 ill take it.

MikePiazzaIsGod December 13, 2008 at 2:41 pm

The Mets should now sign Ty Wigginton. He hit .285 last year and can play 1B, 2B, 3B, and I think a little bit of LF. I’d much rather have him, than Castillo or Cora.

Mel Rojas December 13, 2008 at 2:43 pm

can wiggy play second well? Also, if he plays second whos gonna bat second?

MikePiazzaIsGod December 13, 2008 at 2:45 pm

You could put Murphy 2nd.

MikePiazzaIsGod December 13, 2008 at 2:50 pm

You could also bat Wiggy 2nd, he has average plate discipline, but isn’t very fast.

GuruMets December 13, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Phil says Showmeschieser , but he never did. Oh, wait I guess he did only show me s#@t!

vic79 December 13, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Murphy is a LF…….that is where he will be…..maybe 1B after next yr

Wiggi would be great but I also think he will get more money to start for a team like the Reds or Giants

I imagine the options are still in no preferable order, Rivera, Gomes, Baldelli…………likely some other RH OF bats sitting around too………….

vic79 December 13, 2008 at 3:48 pm

so who is Left handed relief option

How can u not like the relief corps now……..

Rodriguez
Putz
Sanchez
Green
Feliciano
Stokes

with Scho gone now, thank god,,,,,,,,,they will need a second lefty……..Guardado , Biemel, Ohman……who else?

vic79 December 13, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Addition by subtraction…..Pedro is part of the failure…….I know he would be a descent #5 and if he gets hurt then Niese but jeeesh how many chances does he need

Either way I guess I dont care………I can see the positive but want new faces

The Slider December 13, 2008 at 4:16 pm

I think that it’s safe to say that this was primarily a salary dump as many of you have already stated. No doubt it is so that Omar can used this saved money towards free agents, probably a pitcher (Ollie or Lowe) or a hitter (Hudson – if we can get rid of Castillo – or, yes, maybe Manny – I think Omar will make a run at him if he’s still available after all the other issues are taken care of and we still have some money left).

ChadBradfordSociety December 13, 2008 at 4:41 pm

All we need to do now is get rid of castillo’s salary. Once we do that, we’ll be free to sign a guy like orlando hudson to compliment delgado’s defence on the right side of the infield. then we can sign another lefty reliever like joe beimel or trade for one. maybe we could get a top-of-the-line starter like lowe or just re-sign ollie. we could bring in somebody to compete for that fifth spot with niese. then, left field can be taken care of.

does anybody else see bringing manny here on a two-year, $45 million deal? omar likes him, and so will the fans.

nostradamus December 13, 2008 at 7:22 pm

guys like abreau, dunn, dye, etc. are schlubs…and most are lefty humps at that. SIGN MANNY AND GO TO THE WORLD SERIES!

CaliFan05 December 15, 2008 at 4:21 am

Dont sign Manny. We have a good outfield right now with Beltran, Church, Murphy/Tatis/Pegan/Reed/ and Evans.

Help eachother dump salaries by trading Castillo to the Dodgers for Jones or Pierre

Sign Ivan Rodriguiz abd some how get rid of Shcneider (they signed him for defense and Rodriguiz is a far better defensive and offensive player with heart) “a better LoDuca”

Dont sign Kawaksami if it long or expensive (look at Saito if the price is right instead)

Possibly look at Daniel Cabrea if the price is right

CaliFan05 December 15, 2008 at 4:22 am

I liked the Robertson trade after i thought about it? anyone agree?
