News: Oberkfell Named Bisons Manager
By Regis Courtemanche - Dec 12, 2008 2:14 pm

The Mets’ triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons, have named Ken Oberkfell to be their manager next season.

He was most recently the Mets’ first base coach after Jerry Manuel became the teams’ manager.

Oberkfell is 812-803 (.503 winning percentage) in his previous 12 seasons as a manager.

I’m surprised and pleased that he stayed in the organization.

  2. alex242 says:

    THE NEXT METS MANAGER!

  3. zen says:

why are mets fans so in love with oberkfell?

i’m sure he’d be a decent manager, but who knows? he’s not even tied to mets history. he was a mediocre player for former rivals (braves and cardinals)

    i don’t get it.

  4. alex242 says:

    is the name bro!! lol

  5. GravediggerHebner says:

Most major league managers are former mediocre players from other organizations.

    BOBBY VALENTINE..
    JOE TORRE..
    JACK MCCLEON..
    ETC..

  7. darkstar73 says:

there’s far more former mediocre players from other organizations that don’t become managers, than do. So what gives?

  8. docgoodens8ball says:

Good for him. I play softball against his brother. He could definitely become the Mets manager one day (Ken not his brother).

  9. steadyeddie says:

if Omar keeps up this fine work
I’m certain Jerry will be just fine

  10. alex242 says:

you rarely see a great player become a manager afterwards.. it may be becoz they felt like the contribution with baseball is done.. who knows..

  11. zen says:

alex242: jor torre was a very good player.

  12. alex242 says:

    ZEN:

He was a good player not a very good player.. he was a 295 hitter with 252 hr’s and 1185 rbi’s in 18 seasons.. by definition to you as well i imagine moises alou being a very good player as well..

  13. zen says:

torre was a 9 time all-star and played before steroids.

he was a very good player. very good.

and alou was pretty good too.

  14. I beg to differ that Joe Torre is more than just an average manager.

He was in the right place at the right time with the Yankees – a team with lotsa moolah and lotsa PEDs.

In fifteen years we went from Tidewater, Norfalk, New Orleans and now Buffalo.

Taking dibs on the next AAA affiliate. I’m thinking Indianapolis…

  16. JINBK says:

Alex, I think it has more to do with the fact that you can learn a lot by riding the pine. If you’re picking a manager and bench coach’s brain for ten seasons while the great players are out there playing, you could probably manage a ballclub as well.

  17. alex242 says:

Sometimes that as well doesn’t work either.. didn’t we have a guy manage for us that was 10 years under torre?

    remember him..

  18. koosman36 says:

marv – tidewater=norfolk. all that happened is we got booted out and stopped off in the big easy for a couple of years. i’d guess we’d stay in buffalo for a while

sooooooooo what is the projected AAA lineup?……………not a bad question since I do not follow it at all

All I know is likely Niese, Parnell, Figueroa to start if they dont make the team……Kunz likely closes……..do they still have Muniz?……………Evans likely at 1B or OF, didnt they sign a catcher………..Rivera?

    what else?

  20. Bruce Boisclair says:

I think they want Oberkfell there to take over just in case. But aren’t we all rooting for the original gangsta?

(By the way, I am not one of the “Get Manny” guys, but if it is feasible, I would do it short-term– he brings a winning intangible, if you can survive the nonsense. Also, I think it would be fun to watch Jerry manage him. By the way, maybe the team will be a little looser with Jerry at the helm for the full year?)

  21. C Dubb says:

For those who are wondering why the fans like Oberkfell, I can only speak for myself, but I’m intrigued by what I’ve read about him. Apparently, the players love him, and he is highly respected throughout the minor leagues. Given that he won the 2005 Baseball America Minor League Manager of the Year Award, I am very surprised he’s still in our organization. And that explains why, if the team does not succeed this season, most fans would expect Oberkfell to be waiting in the wings.

  22. Ceetar says:

Hell, knowing little about him, it’d be hard to be worse than Manuel without being actively investigated for throwing games.

  23. m29w_12789 says:

Obie has done his time , I remember him here up in the Catskill Mts ( Mountaindale NY) in the Northern League ( unaffilated pro league) He was a pretty good mgr here, the fans respected him. That was back in the 1990’s . I believe one day he will manage in MLB, I would not be surprised if Larussa ever gives it up, Obie takes his place or Gangsta does a Willie and gets canned , obie takes his place.

  24. jeenyus245 says:

I’m glad the mets AAA team is in Buffalo. Now i don’t have to travel obscenely far to see Met players.

  25. McVillesMet says:

Too bad im transferring away from Buffalo this semester and wont be able to easily watch games…
