News: Yankees Sign Burnett

December 12, 2008 at 16:58 pm · 189 comments

by Mike Nichols

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, citing a ‘baseball source,’ reports the Yankees have signed free-agent RHP A.J. Burnett to five-year, $82.5 million contract pending a physical.

Burnett was 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA in 35 starts with the Blue Jays this season.

As noted earlier today on MetsBlog, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported the Yankees will not pursue Derek Lowe if they sign Burnett.

Cerrone also wrote the following in the above mentioned post:

“The way I understand it, Lowe is more concerned with the dollar amount than the years. Also, the buzz around Lowe continues to suggest that he would like to retire within the next few years or so, and would prefer to sign with a team who has a spring training facility near his home in Florida.”

It is so easy to be the GM of the Yankees all you have to do is outbid everbody else and you got your man

mrose December 12, 2008 at 5:00 pm

spend spend spend spend spend spend spend spend spend

gipper82475 December 12, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Ok, Omar….time to sweep in and get Lowe….or Sheets.

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Absolute worst contract so far.

Burnett is average and injury prone, the Yankees made a huge mistake here. Nice.

Hopefully, this allows us to get Sheets and not Lowe.

lil pelf December 12, 2008 at 5:02 pm

i have a feeling we are gonna get lowe now…. if the yankees miss the playoffs again i will laugh and laugh after all this spending

GET MANNY 09′

shea_guevara December 12, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Carl Pavano 2.0.

The only bad thing about this is that, even in the likely event that Burnett throws like three total pitches for the Yankees, they still won’t feel it financially.

metsfan42793 December 12, 2008 at 5:04 pm

The Yankees just wasted 82 million. Burnett is going to get hurt every year of his contract and Burnett was only good against the Yankees.

hornthecheck December 12, 2008 at 5:04 pm

We definitely need Sheets rather than Lowe. (Although i wouldn’t mind either). But Sheets will only command a 2-3 year deal, and he is an ace on top of that.

Pitching first, the worry about the hitting.

Philnym31 December 12, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Great news. This lets allows us to swoop in on Lowe.

CaseStreet December 12, 2008 at 5:04 pm

2009 Yankees=2008 Tigers

lil pelf December 12, 2008 at 5:06 pm

yeah i think id prefer sheets to lowe as well,, but i like both. get one sign pedro or trade for marquis to compete with neise and sign manny

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:06 pm

can the mets really not afford perez and ben sheets ? i mean come on the mans not asking ransom money hes still gotta prove himself he can stay healthy were New york theres gotta be enough money to sign perez and sheets

Metfreak December 12, 2008 at 5:07 pm

I hate to say this but part of me wish that the Wilpons would spend like drunk fools like the Yankees

lil pelf December 12, 2008 at 5:07 pm

yeah its embaressing the yankees can afford cc and burnett and we cant afford perez and sheets

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:07 pm

atleast on Manny or 2 top starting pitchers

stillbelieve December 12, 2008 at 5:07 pm

lil pelf, looks like you made your christmas wish list

grmetsfan December 12, 2008 at 5:09 pm

They will never learn, like someone pointed out already. Pavano Part II for sure.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:09 pm

its a shame i mean niese needs more triple A time and sheets can be signed for 2 years with 3rd year option that gives neise time to progress and maybe trade perez or sheets down the line if neise becomes a more cheap proven starter there both def. worth the money to have a stud rotation

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:10 pm

We need Sheets and Garland.

I doubt the Yankees will want Sheets and Burnett in the same rotation, as both generally miss about 10 starts a year.

Garland is pefect to offset the risk of Sheets. He’s a workhorse, and you can never have too many of those.

metsflip December 12, 2008 at 5:11 pm

lol Matt love the icon u put on the post… Its what ive been preaching all year…

hornthecheck December 12, 2008 at 5:11 pm

What the Mets need:

1. O. Perez
2. B. Sheets
3. O. Hudson

Manny would be nice, but I don’t see him as a realistic solution. I really like Murphy and i want to see what he can do with 300+ AB’s.

lil pelf December 12, 2008 at 5:12 pm

i prefer lowe to sheets actually for two very good reasons. one: he is a proven post season pitcher. two: he’s gone ten years without going on the dl

hornthecheck December 12, 2008 at 5:12 pm

You can add Garland to the list as well. I personally don’t want Randy Wolfe.

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:12 pm

2/32 max for Lowe.

Burn_Philly_Down December 12, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Shocker of the day hehe

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:12 pm

i think if you let the market ride out and let the yankees settle them selves with there rotation and hopefully the yankees dont call on sheets and just take pettite back maybe then sheets value can drop because of hit health issue then maybe the mets can entertain him with a nice amount of money for 1 season to redeem himself with a 2nd year team pick up option incase he proves he can stay healthy then we pick it up

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:13 pm

The Mets need Jon Garland.

darkstar73 December 12, 2008 at 5:13 pm

wow, horrible signing, this will easily come back to bite them. However, it leaves the door open to Lowe or Sheets. Sheets has the higher upside, Lowe has consistency.
About the spending, the Mets can’t spend like the Yankees, no team can, no team makes the money the yanks do, bottom line. Furthermore, spending may be fun, but has it gotten the Yankees? Nothing. When they started spending the mega big bucks (2001) they started not winning championships, and now, they can’t even make the postseason. I bet they don’t even this next year, they’re offense is bad and aging.

steadyeddie December 12, 2008 at 5:13 pm

Carl Pavano in a BlueJays cap….
could’nt happen to a better team.
CC is like 300 pounds and won’t want to extend himself , what with that long contract and now they get this accident waiting to happen.
Pride, BenGay and horse hormones.
Long live the Skankees!

janss36 December 12, 2008 at 5:13 pm

Yanks will probably land Lowe as well… Just u wait and see…

How bad do they come off looking with the economy in collapse, and asking for another 200M to finish New Yankee Stadium?

Seriously…

mrose December 12, 2008 at 5:14 pm

“I hate to say this but part of me wish that the Wilpons would spend like drunk fools like the Yankees”

Why?
CC fine, but we signed Santana last year, so that is a wash to me..

Burnett.. for 5 years! 5 YEARS!! its an unbelievable amount of money, especially considering they just got done w/ Pavano… I don’t envy this whatsoever

bucknersankles December 12, 2008 at 5:15 pm

BRIAN CASHMAN IS A TRUE ” STRATIGIST ” I LOVE THE WAY THE SPANKEES TRIED TO GIVE CC AN ULTIMATUM ONLY TO GO FLYING ACROSS THE COUNTRY AT WARP SPEED TO BID AGAINST THEMSELVES AND COUGH UP AN EXTRA 20 MIL, FREAKIN BRILLIANT.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:15 pm

if the mets decide we’re getting to pitchers of oliver perez then yes i would want jon garland over a pitcher like marquis to eat up inngins but it all depends on how much he wants if he’s asking crayz money i rather trade show for maquis for that 5th spot but regardless us mets fans deserve 2 starting pitchers this offseason a legit 1 and a 5th starter minaya needs to get it done, and i still think we can afford to stud pitchers like perez and sheets but wlipons trying to hold that dough

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Let the Yankees have Lowe, I want no part of him.

grmetsfan December 12, 2008 at 5:16 pm

I’d rather have the Mets resign Ollie. Lowe was anything but consistent last year and pitched in a horrible division.

May they could sign another guy like Garland, you know what to expect from him. Sign Ramirez for LF and forget about Hudson.

Hudson looks good now, but isn’t that what we all thought about Castillo when he first came on board after the Deadline in ‘07? He’s got more pop… that’s it. I believe if the Mets give this guy a long term contract he will fall off the table… this will be Castillo 2.0 IMO

Burn_Philly_Down December 12, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Ok it should go like this for Omar:

1. Manny
1a. Manny
1b. Manny
1c. Manny
1d. Manny
1e. (you get the pattern Omar!??)

Philnym31 December 12, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Did anyone else hear that loud noise? That was the door closing on the market for Derek Lowe. LOL

Deaner December 12, 2008 at 5:17 pm

if the mets sign sheets they def. need some insurance pitchers

they should sign ollie and get either penny, garland or marquis, in that order

then they should sign manny. i just think he’s the only type of player who will a) instill fear in the other division members b) dramatically improve the lineup

they should also sign cordero and get another lefty for the pen.

lineup

reyes
castillo
wright
manny
beltran
delgado
church
castro

santana
pelf
ollie
maine
penny/garland

krod
putz
cordero
felciano/green
sanchez
parnell/kunz/schoe

bench: murphy, reed, evans, schneider, utility inf.

lil pelf December 12, 2008 at 5:18 pm

forget about the yankees, they are still worse than the rays and sox, we need to go out and get lowe. he won all three decisive games for the 04 sox, has never been on the dl, and has pitched a no hitter!

jaydh December 12, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Lowe – $50mil / 3yrs

lil pelf December 12, 2008 at 5:20 pm

manny – 70/ 3 years

Burn_Philly_Down December 12, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Obama-Manny 09

(Im not stopping until we sign him lol)

steadyeddie December 12, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Hank must be so proud and blouted…

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:21 pm

sign oliver perez 4 years – 48 mill
sign sheets 2year deal pick up option on 2nd year
sign garland if he can come cheap if not trade for marquis
sign marcus thames
sign alex cora

resign ayala
sign another low end catcher from the scrap sheet if theres any one you can send to spring training or triple a that might have upside incase we get sick of schneider unless you want to trade for molina which i would love

this is if the mets want to go cheap on a power hitter if they say manny out of nowhere im all for it but i wouldnt mind if they platooned tatis and murphy with thames playing here and there and also coming off the bench with power hitting bombs in crucial spots also with nick evans growing up and contributing and angel pagan probably fighting for spot on the roster we could go teh cheap rout and still make it but we will need either a lowe or perez but i pefer perez and a guy like garland or marquis

WallyWhitehurst December 12, 2008 at 5:22 pm

This has got to mean the Mets can make a bid on Lowe and GET HIM..

- the Braves need to figure out Glavine, Smoltz, and from what I’ve read, have not been in on Lowe up to this point.

- the Phils just spend 30 mill on what will become their 39 year old left fielder who’s another lefty, and still have Adam Eaton’s contract to deal with.

- the Yanks just spent $243.5 mill on pitching (CC and AJ) and still might be in the mood for Pettite and Sheets

- Lowe, Ollie, Sheets, Garland, Wolf, Pettite, Pedro, Randy Johnson all remain unsigned so the odds are in our favor.

- Speculation about the Mets interest in Lowe has been ongoing since the end of the season and has been confirmed by nearly every beat writer out there.

- The Mets desperately need a number 2/3 starter who’s dependable

nydre78 December 12, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Once again, Brian Cashman proves he is the most overrated GM in baseball.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:23 pm

when i wrote sign sheets and then garland after i ment it as if we cant get sheets than replace him with garland or marquis sorry for the mix up

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 5:23 pm

lil pelf

id take that in a second

Metfreak December 12, 2008 at 5:23 pm

I am sure the Wilpons makes close to what the Yankees are making plus now they are getting a 20 million from Citi group so yes I do understand they signed Johan but that was it and this year they are on a roll I just don’t want to them to go cheap all of a sudden . They can sign Garland and Perez or maybe just Perez and then go after Manny you know if they wanted to they can

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:25 pm

i hope next time minaya go gets a bagel someone says next wheres manny or our top starting pitchers lol

steadyeddie December 12, 2008 at 5:25 pm

where the heck is rusty jr when this funny crap is happening?

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:26 pm

If the Mets sign Sheets (and they should), Garland is the perfect guy to counter him. It gives us 3 guys who pitch 200 innings, and we wouldn’t even have to rely on Sheets to be our 2 starter. If he misses time, we have Niese who is ML ready to take over.

Since we would have Santana, Pelfrey, and Garland to throw all those innings, Sheets is perfect for this team.

Metsfan111 December 12, 2008 at 5:27 pm

There is no way that the Mets make as much money as the Yankees. The Yankees sell out every game at much higher ticket prices than Shea. They also own the YES network.

TheBigStapler December 12, 2008 at 5:27 pm

This is probably going to be a super rotation. I wonder if they plan on dealing Hughes or Kennedy.

Sabathia
Wang
Burnett
Chamberlain
Hughes or Pettite

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:28 pm

wilpns own SNY which is a better network and still dont do nothing

Burn_Philly_Down December 12, 2008 at 5:28 pm

In all seriousness if we did sign Manny would anyone agree with this lineup?:

Castillo
Reyes
Beltran
Manny
Wright
Murphy
Church
Schneider/Castro

Louie leading off scares me, but I have a good feeling about him for some stupid reason.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:28 pm

atleast the braves aren’t getting burnett atleast it make us fan a bit happier

gipper82475 December 12, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Metsflip (21),

It was a Nichols’ post, not a Cerrone post.

Great graphic anyway!

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:29 pm

whenever you get a good feeling something good going to happy i hope your right especially if were keeping castillo

mistermet December 12, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Mets are the 2nd richest team in MLB, and should be able to compete financially with the Yankees for a player at least “some” of the time. Problem is it’s never.

Metsfan111 December 12, 2008 at 5:29 pm

The Mets have a top 5 payroll and just got Johan Santana, yet you say that they don’t do anything.

mdemaio December 12, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Picking up Lowe is an offensive and defensive move for the Mets. If he wants to be closer to FLA, Atlanta fits the bill, and they clearly have the $ to pursue him given their interest in Burnett. It wouldn’t surprise me if the two clubs end up being his strongest suitors…if Atlanta signs Lowe and is able to trade for a Greinke or Peavy, that becomes a pretty tough rotation…

I wouldn’t count out Philly, either…

x-nady December 12, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Forget about the Yanks. This signing could have major repercussions on the deals Lowe & Ollie ultimately get. We’re looking at least 4 years for both of them now, minimum. Couple that with Wilpon getting swindled out of 300 million from that Hedge Fund fraud, and we may not see another major signing this year for the mets. I hope I am wrong. Sigh.

jamohn December 12, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Great deal. The five games he actually starts will be decent, after that he’ll be their best pitcher on the DL. Wish they’d sign Manny so he can quit on them. (CaseStreet, comment #10: well put)
Why all the love for Sheets? Much like Burnett, he’s good when he’s healthy but spends way too much time on the DL. I’d watch the market on Lowe- not a lot of deep pockets out there so the Mets could be in the catbird seat on this one.
Lastly, why didn’t they push harder for Ibanez? Solid fielder, excellent bat and now with the (hated) Phillies. Don’t get me wrong, the K-Rod/Putz acquisitions are great and I realize Omar needed to address pitching before offense. I just think that timing dictated a move on Ibanez.

Metsfan111 December 12, 2008 at 5:31 pm

The Mets operate on a budget, just like 28 other teams. Just because the Yankees are idiots and overspend on players doesn’t mean that the Mets should. The Mets have an ownership group that wants to make money.

NewYorkMetfanatic62 December 12, 2008 at 5:31 pm

The Yankees really are going all out this year.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:31 pm

even if you gave perez 10 million for his 1st season and either sheets 10 or 12 for his 1st season thats 20 or 22 mill and if you get garland at maybe 8 mill for the 1st season that would be only 18 to 22 the most on for next seasons payroll on solid pitchers its a shame burnett is injury prone and he gets almost what perez and garland can get in there 1st season come on wilpons give us something

mistermet December 12, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Top 5 payroll is not good enough- their payroll is disproportionately low given their immense revenue streams which will continue to soar. Just being among the top 5 or even the top 2 or 3 payrolls is not good enough…The Mets’ payroll is closer to the Blue Jays’ payroll than it is to the NYY, and that is just unacceptable to me, and should be unacceptable to all Mets fans who are paying astronomical ticket prices.

metalsnake89 December 12, 2008 at 5:32 pm

boy……..yankees sure can throw money….outbid themselves for pitchers.

if andy petite does not sign with the yankees, the yankees will either over spend for sheets or perez.

Omar’s focus should be to sign at least one of these pitcher in this order:
1. sheets
2.garland
3.perez

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:32 pm

If we do sign Sheets and Garland, the Yankees rotation isn’t as good as ours.

Santana>CC
Sheets>Burnett
PelfreyPettitte
Maine<Joba

randytate December 12, 2008 at 5:33 pm

While on the surface this seems like a huge amount of money they are spending, the Yanks just traded the following salaries:

Sabathia for Giambi

Burnett for Mussina

I think each makes the Yanks a better team, sorry to say.

mistermet December 12, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Metsfan11,

No reason the Mets can’t sign at least 1 big free agent. I’m not saying we have to “be the Yankees” and sign 4 or 5 big free agents, but 1 or 2 should not be too much to ask from the 2nd richest team in MLB, the Mets- and they’re not even giving us that. And I only count a guy as a “big” free agent if the total contract is 50 million or more. I’m sorry, K-Rod does not count- they got him way cheaper then they should have anyway, and lucked out. Money should be invested elsewhere now. but it won’t be, and I’m sick of it.

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Jamohn:

When Sheets is healthy, he’s miles better than AJ Burnett. There are only a handful of guys better than Sheets and if he misses 10-12 starts, he’s absolutely worth it.

FelixMillan December 12, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Wow. That’s 39.5 million for two starting pitchers, only one of which is a true ace. Wow. After the JD Drew act that Burnett pulled after last season–after giving the Jays only one good season–I wouldn’t want him.

I’d take Lowe over Perez, for consistency sake. And I’d take Lowe over Sheets. Sheets has better stuff, but you can’t count on him. Then you start the shuttle up from the minors. Lowe has never missed a start.

Then again, neither had Glavine.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:35 pm

i mean dont get me wrong it had to be done for them but what happend to the youth movent to try and develop through there system or through trades they went against it
look pelfrey is home grown and main was bought for nothing hes practially home grown and niese will be next there far from home grown except joba who needs to be in the 8th inning role if there trying to win a world series

randytate December 12, 2008 at 5:35 pm

And remember, the Mets had AJ Burnett once – and traded him for Al Leiter. And that was a great trade for us!

Pimp_Daddy December 12, 2008 at 5:37 pm

How about:

Trade Delgado to Tampa for a #5 and sign Sheets. Sign Dunn to play first.

Santana
Sheets
Pelf
Maine
Tampa Pitcher

NewYorkMetfanatic62 December 12, 2008 at 5:37 pm

sign Manny and find a way to get rid of Castillo.

1. Jose Reyes
2. Carlos Beltran
3. David Wright
4. Manny Rameriz
5. Carlos Delgado
6. Orlando Hudson
7. Ryan Church
8. Brian Schneider

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:38 pm

i think perez and garland is the right fit for the mets getting marquis makes no sense because hes getting paid 9 million from the cubs this sesaon and i bet you can get garland atleast 8 million off his 1st year and we’ll just keep shoew and make him lefty specialtist only not pitching to righties because he dominated lefties perez and garland seems the most right and best fit and im not saying perez is better than lowe its just that hes young and has power stuff and can dominate at any giving night and hes al lefty that we need to go with johan and need in this division with many lefy hitters and garland is a gurantee 200 innings and keeps the ball down so there just looking like the best fits for the mest at reasonable prices

metalsnake89 December 12, 2008 at 5:39 pm

i would stay clear of Lowe. this guy is ready to go on the DL once he joins the mets. garland for two years would be alright, hope he could bounce back like Kyle Lohse did for the cards.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:39 pm

tampa traded jackson already no more starters getting traded

Nightlife December 12, 2008 at 5:40 pm

lol

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:42 pm

Metalsnake89:

Agreed completely, nothing interests me about Lowe. His splits are scary.

Garland would be a great pickup as our 4 starter. Sheets would be awesome too, just as long as we get a Garland/Marquis as a workhorse out of the 5th spot.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:43 pm

oliver perez
garland
cora
ayala
thames
another backup catcher or trade for back up catcher

lets play ball

Pimp_Daddy December 12, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Tampa needs a DH and Delgado would be perfect. They have enough arms that they could still trade that pitcher thats last name starts with a S. Sonnistine or something like that,. I think he would do well in the NL.

mdemaio December 12, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Here’s one that will never happen, but I’ll throw it out there anyway…fun to discuss…

Mets trade Delgado, Schow and Parnell to Chicago for Derrek Lee and Jason Marquis.

Mets are lefty heavy, Chicago is righty heavy. Delgado’s and Lee’s contracts basically offset this year. The difference between Marquis and Schow’s contracts is about 6M, which should be enough for them to squeeze in Peavey. Chicago could flip Parnell in the deal. Mets get a solid RH bat who they control for 2 until 2010.

Two-By-Four December 12, 2008 at 5:45 pm

The Yankees top four in their starting rotation will be CC, Wang, Joba, and Burnett. Talent wise that is a scary array of starting pitching and if they stay healthy will be hard to beat. George Steinbrenner’s skills in the sports entertainment business has built an incredible fan base drawing over 4 million a year. When you factor in other sources of revenue it puts the Yankees in an enviable position where they can absorb a Pavano as the cost of doing business. Signing Burnett to a risky contract is a chance they can afford to take,

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 5:45 pm

mdemaio

id do that in a second, although the cubs arent stupid

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Lee is a great player but chokes when it matters the most plus i doubt they would but if they would i would do it just so we would have a 1st basemen beyond this season but if thats the case i’d be hollaring at Texeria

Willie Randolph December 12, 2008 at 5:47 pm

There’s supposed to be a rule of 2 or 3 type A free agents right ?

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 5:47 pm

two-by-four

the scary thing is they arent even close to being done yet.

pettitte and teixiera will probably be next

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 5:50 pm

tell me if you guys would be satisfied with these signings if we are not to go after big name leftfielders

sign perez , garland
sign marcus thames
sign alex cora or jerry hairston jr.
resign ayala
sign another cheap hard nosed catcher with ability of having a comeback year to invite to spring training

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 5:50 pm

Ever since the Yankees started buying these extremely high prices players, they’ve failed to win a WS.

They can continue to buy up high risk/high reward players, but teams like that don’t win championships.

Signing Garland and Sheets gives us a very good solid rotation, with Sheets being the only big risk in there. 3 200 inning pitchers in one roation is hard to come by

Hubie December 12, 2008 at 5:52 pm

Two by Four:

You make good points but the Yanks revenue base is no longer as guaranteed as you think. These two contracts + their already enormous payroll will put the squeeze on them if this economic downturn is as severe as it now seems. There is no longer a laundry list of firms willing to pony up silly dollars for high prcies seats and luxury boxes. Advertising on YES will also take a big hit.

Maineiac December 12, 2008 at 5:54 pm

The Yankees like to sign players with initials (C.C. and A.J.)

The Mets should go for Ben Sheets. Yes he is an injury risk but he has great stuff. If they don’t sign him, then go for Lowe or Perez.

Santana
Sheets/ Lowe
Maine
Pelfrey
Marquis/Wolf/Garland

metalsnake89 December 12, 2008 at 5:55 pm

eduardosmets

sign perez , garland — ok

sign marcus thames — ok, if it is under $2million

sign alex cora or jerry hairston jr. — try jose valentin again for spring training

resign ayala — ok

sign another cheap hard nosed catcher — the guy is Javier Valentin, hard nosed catcher and a pain in the a $ $ when pinch hitting with runners on.

cleonsvan December 12, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Ibanez is 37 and past his prime. Remember the roids era is over and players are not going to last like they did over the past 10 years. Phils can have him. We need youth. I’d rather sign Bradley.

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 5:57 pm

reyordonez

but signing them both is not very realistic.

garland looks like he will be our pitcher to replace Ollie which is an improvement there

marquis is an improvement over Brandon Knight

and let Omar do his thing and get manny

add a UI like Punto, Cora, Counsell, etc and thats it

My guts telling me that we are gonna sign Sheets for 2 yrs,we’re trading Schow for Marquis ,Alex Cora will be our utility and we gonna carry 3 catchers with Pudge Rodriguez being our primary catcher !

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 6:00 pm

bradley is the man but i warn you to mention his name on this blog i had many tryn to come for my head for mentioning him but that guys the man and would crap on howard and hamels if they ever came out there mouths and would shine here

metalsnake89 December 12, 2008 at 6:01 pm

please, say no to pudge …. the last thing i want to see is the mets pitchers complaining about pudge.

i’ll rather give Thole a chance to start or might as well just keep Brian Schneider.

Willie Randolph December 12, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Pudge is the only catcher that has the balls to ask for the chin music against anybody in the league !

Anyone else here concerned about the story out today regarding the huge losses the Wilpon’s have apparently absorbed with regard to the Madoff Ponzi scheme? Sounds like Sterling Mets may have taken big hit financially. I’m worried about the possible impact of all this on payroll and potential free agent signings…

darkstar73 December 12, 2008 at 6:05 pm

guys, the net worth of these organizations is released yearly and the Yankees are ALWAYS, among the top in all sports, 2nd usually to the Cowboys. They simply make more money than the Mets, you cannot argue this point. Sure, the Mets will begin to start to make more than they used to with the new stadium, sny, etc. However, the Yankees have been making WAY more for YEARS now. It’s not just about this past year, it’s about every year. The yankees are by far the richest team in baseball.

Deaner December 12, 2008 at 6:05 pm

looking at the history of ben sheets, he’s really had only two seriously injury plagued years. he’s made 30+ starts like 3 or more times, so he’s not as much of a risk as i thought

besides the fact that he has nasty stuff AND is only 30 years old.

in terms of commitment and dollars i’d say go with sheets, but in this instance, they need to have a wealth of starters. the mets will need 3 pitchers if they sign sheets.

Philnym31 December 12, 2008 at 6:06 pm

That was the door slamming on Lowe’s market.

Free Aaron Heilman III December 12, 2008 at 6:13 pm

Holy #^&W … I heard about Madoff earlier today but didn’t know that Sterling Equities had lots of accounts with them. If the Wilpons take a big hit, this could mean some retrenchment for the Mets.

As long as they don’t have to cut payroll too steeply they should be fine. Their team is competitive enough now with the young core.

But, hey, forget about getting Manny or Tiexiera. That’s unrealistic not only in light of the Madoff news, but also in terms of how much the Mets already spend and where their priorities should be now (Ollie or a replacement and perhaps even more bullpen tweaking).

cleonsvan December 12, 2008 at 6:14 pm

I’d rather sign Lowe than Ollie. He’s just the type of pitcher we need for the big games down the stretch. Neise can slot into the other lefty spot.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 6:14 pm

why is everyone scared of milton we have a gangsta as a coach milton will fit right in and i wouldnt mind 1 bit we would atleast be getting a guy with balls to stick up for this team last guy i really saw fighting for the blue and orange was mike defilce when the marlins and mets got the beefing in 07

i wouldnt mind ivan rodriguez i would take the chance on him since our catchers or no better plus hes another guy with a set of balls plus a ring enough requirment

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 6:15 pm

brian schneider is perfectly fine as our catcher and if ramon can lay off the rice and beans maybe he can actually contribute to the team.

i mean scheider batting 8th is not a concern for this team…

cleonsvan December 12, 2008 at 6:15 pm

I heard as much as a 300 million dollar loss.

Free Aaron Heilman III December 12, 2008 at 6:16 pm

The Yankees are grotesque and a joke. I don’t care how much money they make. They shouldn’t be driving up the market so much and outspending everyone by such a wide margin — especially when they have their tin cups out, begging to the state/city for further stadium support.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 6:18 pm

schneider hitting 8th for this team is a MAJOR concern the guy destroys anyt rally we put together i would put him in the 7 th role and better hitter in the 8th hole just so he doesnt ruin a rally that guy is that bad witth guys on base he is only around for defense which he wasn’t even all that great especially if he’s making 4million i really like robinson cancel for us the guy stays in shape pretty well for a big guy and if castro doesn’t show he can stay in shape for the sake of his team i would take cancel over him or atlest over schneider , schneiders done on this team he’s going to be the next heilman next year he wont make it thorough half the seaosn he will be booed out of town in a month

gipper82475 December 12, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Mistermet (69),

You do know the Wilpons just lost $300 million in the Madoff ponzi scheme, don’t you?

The Mets have a budget…which is smart. Given the last few years (Pedro, Beltran, Santana, K-Rod, etc.) they spend plenty. Would I love the budget to be a bit higher? Of course….but that is a slippery slope.

Finally, if just spending equaled winning, the Skanks would win every year.

I wish the Yankees good luck with Burnett. Talk about making your living in your contract year:

1999: Made Major League debut. 162 innings.
2000: Penciled in for Marlins’ rotation, but ruptured thumb ligament pushes season debut to late July. 95 innings.
2001: Broken foot pushes season debut to May 182.6 innings.
2002: Ranks second in baseball in Pitcher Abuse Points per start (thanks to Jeff Torborg). Threw 122 or more pitches nine times. Late in year, has DL stint for an elbow bruise. 204.3 innings.
2003: Burnett goes to arbitration with Marlins and loses. Forearm tightness leads to a cortisone shot in the elbow in March; starts season on DL. Has Tommy John surgery April 29th. 23 innings.
2004: A setback pushes his season debut to June 3rd. Says arm is stronger than it was before surgery, but elbow inflammation surfaces by September. Included in December trade talks with Yankees, D’Backs. 127.3 innings.
2005: Burnett’s last year before free agency. He sought a three-year, $21MM deal, but the Marlins offered $16MM and no agreement was reached. Has laser eye surgery in offseason. Elbow inflammation in May, misses one turn. In June-July, trade rumors link him to Orioles, Jays, and White Sox. Burnett’s unwillingness to sign an extension and the Marlins’ insistence on packaging him with Mike Lowell nixes all deals. September: Burnett rips team and Jack McKeon and is asked to leave the team. 209 innings.
2006: Signs widely panned five-year, $55MM deal with Jays. Starts season on DL with elbow soreness. Makes a few starts and is placed back on DL. Returns in June. 154.6 innings.
2007: DL stint for shoulder strain in June. Makes one start and returns to DL. 170.6 innings.
2008: Broken fingernail prevents curveballs in spring, but it doesn’t become an issue. Mockingly doffs cap while Jays fan boo after poor start. Admits he wouldn’t mind playing for Cubs.

bigchart333 December 12, 2008 at 6:49 pm

yanks gonna re-sign Pettite for one year 11 mil or so now that they got pavano, i mean AJ burnett…

believe me, as much as i hate to see the yanks BUY all the great players, them signing cc and AJ is nothign but GREAT news for us…the market for lowe and sheets just dwindled immensely…we WILL wind up with one of them 2 and/or ollie..mark my words

and yes, the thames platoon u talkin about is perfect, especially his power off the bench…im sure someone will jump down my throat saying “thames is not gonna save this team”…no S sherlock, i dont htink he’s piazza, here to save us all..but a legit power bat that can come in in the bottom of the 8th and cause an opposing manager to change his mentality on how to face us…

but yeah, all that aside…it should be manny time, i got the perfect contract for him, been postin it for the last 3 weeks..

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Deaner December 12, 2008 at 6:53 pm

chris capuano was just non-tendered by the brewers

he’s a lefty, has pitched over 200 innings more than once and strikes out batters

he’s coming off surgery, but he’s a guy i would take a look at for insurance

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 6:58 pm

@ eduardo:

Why Perez and not Lowe? Much as I love Perez, he was league-average last year, averaged just over 5 innings a start and wildly inconsistent (which tends to be the rule with him). Lowe, in the meantime, averaged close to 7 innings a start over the last 3 years and is a groundball machine (minimizing HRs and maximizing usage of our infield D).

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 7:00 pm

i would pefer a lefty strike out machine in perez with garland or marquis then over pay for derek lowe we need a 2nd lefty for sure

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Lowe is a product of the NL West.

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Also, it’s pretty obvious that Garland is a must for us. It makes almost too much sense.

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 7:02 pm

i read manny is not considering retirement and wants to play and his goal is to reach 700 home runs OU OH i want to drop the manny talk but he has a GOAL!!!! 700 home runs !!!!! please atleast consider thinking about it manny has a goal !!!!!!!!!

There is a god after all

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 7:03 pm

strike out machine with innings eater both in perez and garland is perfect fits in both age and talent

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Garland had a 4.90 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, less than 100 Ks, and less than 200 IP. That, with the Angels infield defense, which is among the best in baseball.

As for Lowe not being consistent…. He had 1 month with an ERA of 6… every other month, his ERA was under 4.

Lowe > Garland by far.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 7:10 pm

League-average pitching over 200 innings does have value. That value isn’t near what Garland– a “proven double-digit winner”– will command (between 10 and 12 million a year, according to most guesses I’ve seen online).

(And BTW, eduardo– that’s less about strikeouts per 9 innings for Garland)

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 7:10 pm

lowe is old and cant handle new york this is manuels team we want guys with swagger like perez and garland lowe cant handle this side of town

tim redding , chuck james , chris burke all not bad players off the non tendered scrap sheet so far

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Garland is the perfect 4 starter. He’s much cheaper than Lowe and he also always pitched 200 innings.

Garland at 3/30>Lowe at 4/60

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 7:13 pm

1 day of ryan howard , chase utley and victirino hitting wild off of him and he will pack his bags and leave town himself trust me perez has no fear of no hitter i go 4 guys with great stuff and balls perez has both and garland will be an innings eater for us if he wants to much money then settle for marquis
or a tim redding now that hes non tenderd

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 7:13 pm

What makes you think Garland could handle NY over Lowe??? Lowe did spend a few years in Boston, which I heard is a pretty big baseball market…

Youth does not equal talent…

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 7:14 pm

when Lowe was in Boston was he a product of the AL East?

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 7:14 pm

this is queens boro baby not boston

bigchart333 December 12, 2008 at 7:16 pm

why ollie?

Its really simple actually, and it has almost nothing to do with numbers/talent

he’s YOUNG, just STARTING his “pitching prime” and he’s shown brilliance before, i am FULLY confident he will just get better and turn the corner, espeically with a full year under Jerry and Warthen
and also, he’s pitched in NY, big stage, for over a year and a half now…being able to pitch IN NY is a HUGE factor when signing someone so young, i think…he can handle it….
intagibles are sometimes over looked with this team, which is why a guy like K rod or D wright are simply MADE for NY, and a guy like heilman always looks like he’s gonna wet himself

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Garland’s a back end of the rotation guy…. Lowe is a #2…

Perez is a nutcase, and in 2006 and 2007, he was horrible against the Phillies

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 7:17 pm

our team has no tolerance for failure
asking for a high contract at 36 years old you better be good because if you allow the phillies to beat u up even once this town is running you out and lowe just isnt ready for that mentally perez has shown he can come back from a bad start and dominate especially against teams above .500 which is a proven starter to me

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 7:18 pm

@ ReyOrdonez: “Lowe is a product of the NL West.”

Lowe’s record against the NL East (none against us):

6 GS, 39 1/3 IP
3-2 record, 2.05 ERA, 0.99 WHIP

eduardosmets December 12, 2008 at 7:21 pm

i can see it right now utley and howard back to back homers lowe is just standing up there rubing his sweat cap across his forehead looking at the booing crowd saying what have i done thinking in his head ” WHY DID I COME HERE”

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:21 pm

90 of Lowe’s innings last year were against the NL West, where his ERA well well under 3. For his ERA to equal out to 3.24, it had to be around 4 for the rest of the league.

His home/away splits are pretty scary as well.

Unless he’s willing to do a 2/32 deal or something like that, we shouldn’t touch Lowe.

jamie December 12, 2008 at 7:25 pm

ben sheets ben sheets ben sheets

mdemaio December 12, 2008 at 7:26 pm

I wouldn’t be quite so quick to dismiss Lowe as being just a product of his division…sure, he faced SF 4 times and SD 3 times…but he was also 3-1 against AZ when LA needed the wins in the second half, including 2-0 in back-to-back starts against them in late August/early Sept. (he gave up 1 run combined in the two starts). He won his first three starts in September, then lost one 1-0 against SF (5 hits, O ER, 7Ks in 7 innings)) then was lifted early in a the last game of the year (he was tagged with the loss, though he only pitched 3 innings and gave up 0 earned runs). So in the middle of the playoff run he was at his best, in the games his team had to win. He lost both games against Phillie in the playoffs, but held a good offense to 2 runs in 6 innings in both games…it wasn’t his fault the offense and bullpen didn’t pick him up…

If you took discount his interleague games, his ERA would have been under 3 last year…

He’s a horse who’s at his best when the pressure is highest (he’s got a 3.35 lifetime ERA in 21 career playoff appearances – 10 starts). That’s exactly what this team needs.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 7:26 pm

@ ReyOrdonez: Check out Jon Garland’s home/road splits the last two years.

oleosmirf December 12, 2008 at 7:28 pm

eduardo

i usually dont respond to you b/c you dont make any sense but this is insanity

Wednesday September 24th 2008. Delgado hits a grand slam against the cubs to give the Mets a 5-1 lead. Perez then CHOKES and hands the lead right back.

the mets could have won that game they would have gaurenteed at least a 1 game playoff but Perez couldnt throw a damn strike to save his life.

I could care less how much talent Perez and how good he is when he’s on, when he’s off he’s the worst pitcher in the league

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 7:32 pm

BTW, just for fun: Jon Garland’s closest statistical mirrors in baseball history, as per baseball-reference.com, include:

Paul Byrd
Moose Haas
Rick Heiling
Steve Avery
Bobby Jones (!)

Slim December 12, 2008 at 7:33 pm

So no one of you Lowe enthusiasts see red flags waving when you hear “is more concerned with the dollar amount than the years” or “he would like to retire within the next few years or so.”

We don’t even know what Garland is asking. Let’s get some figures before we sign Petey pt. 2…

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Garland’s splits are more consistent than Lowe, I dont see your point with that.

Garland is simply a more sensible buy for this team. 200+ innings every year, he’s under 30.

Signing 36 year olds to 4 year deals is not where this organizations hould be going.

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Lowe is old, and said he wants to retire at 40. That does not indicate he’s washed up.

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Sylar December 12, 2008 at 7:39 pm

I’d much rather have 200 quality innings from Lowe, than 200 terrible innings from Garland. Just because Garland’s younger doesn’t mean he’s better.

And how are Garland’s splits better?? He had an ERA of almost 6 on the road, and batters hit .332 against him on the road.

Lowe is a much smarter signing than Garland.

bigchart333 December 12, 2008 at 7:40 pm

mets just completed a MEGA Deal

just traded Show AND CASH to the Dbacks for Connor Robertson

he had a slick 5.14 ERA and 2 whole K’s…can u say DOMINATOR???

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Disagree with you 100%. Lowe played half of his innings against the NL West, the worst division in baseball.

He’s a better pitcher than Garland, but for another year and probably 5 or so million more per year? Just doesn’t make sense.

Sheets and Garland would be perfect.

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Lowe is a sinkerballer, not a power pitcher (although he still misses about twice as many bats as Garland EVER has). His skill set ages much better than that of 2-pitch power guys like Petey. A 36-year-old who pitches– superlatively– to weak contact is much safer than an aging soft-tosser (recall Glavine when not getting calls, or Bobby Jones at age 29-30), and less of a risk (even at 3/45, say) than an flamethrower at 32 (enjoy, Yanks).

And yes, Garland’s younger. He’s also got a significantly lower ceiling. Like I said, paying his likely price simply isn’t worth the value he provides– it’s simply not smart to pay 10-million plus per year for a guy you wouldn’t think about starting in a playoff series (barring catastrophic injuries to the front 3-4 guys).

BTW, those splits for Garland:
2008
4.18 ERA/1.40 WHIP at home
5.94 ERA/1.67 WHIP road

2007
3.78 ERA/1.21 WHIP at home
4.76 ERA/1.45 WHIP road

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger December 12, 2008 at 7:50 pm

No Show? Hmm.

Robertson, though… intrigues.

ReyOrdonezforlife December 12, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Garland is basically a long-term 4 starter and brings more stability.

I’m all for Lowe on a 2 year deal. But 3 or 4 years, absolutely not.

stickguy December 13, 2008 at 8:37 am

give the ball to Garland for 33 starts and he will likely give you 200 innings. Of course, that is barely over 6 per start..

however, they are likely to be 200 lousy innings. And he only is still going to be in by the 6th/7th if the team has scored a bunch of runs.

if you want almost guaranteed mediocrity, just get marquis and pocket the 5 million difference in salary, and save 2-3 years.

he can eat 200 mediocre innings just as easily as garland.

vic79 December 13, 2008 at 10:20 am

Loving the Yanks overpaying for Burnett………I guess there staff is now set………they should not bother w/Pettite

NOW lets get Lowe on the METS………that would be perfect but I am cool if it has to be Garland or Wolf……..really don’t want Perez back……..more new faces needed to change things up

CaliFan05 December 15, 2008 at 4:33 am

Dont sign Lowe. Hes too old and too expensive!

Dont sign Manny. We have a good outfield right now with Beltran, Church, Murphy/Tatis/Pegan/Reed/ and Evans.

Help eachother dump salaries by trading Castillo to the Dodgers for Jones or Pierre

Sign Ivan Rodriguiz abd some how get rid of Shcneider (they signed him for defense and Rodriguiz is a far better defensive and offensive player with heart) “a better LoDuca”

Dont sign Kawaksami if it long or expensive (look at Saito if the price is right instead)

Jump on a free agent starter quick if you arnt’t going to make a trade Omar

Look at the less epensive alternative of Sheets Garland Ollie Garcia or Cabrea

I still don’t understand why the Mets didn’t consider Burnett
