Read: Ranking The Winter Meetings
By Mike Nichols - Dec 12, 2008 11:02 am

Keith Law of ESPN.com recaps the significant deals and free-agent signing form this year’s Winter Meeting with his rankings of the top 25 moves.

Dominating the Law’s top five are the Mets recent bullpen acquisitions – the signing of RHP Francisco Rodriguez and the trade for RHP J.J. Putz and RHP Sean Green.

Law ranks the acquisition of Putz as the better move, than the signing of Rodriquez, writing:

“If he’s fully healthy, he’s one of the most dominant late-game relievers around, with outstanding control and an out-pitch splitter. He’ll make more of a difference to the Mets’ bullpen than the other guy they acquired this week.”

Meanwhile, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com also provides a team-by-team recap of the recently concluded winter meetings.

Just realized we still have a looooong way to go til spring training.

  2. Crazy Eddie says:

Law is really high on Sean Green too which I was surprised at.

  3. QnsNative1718 says:

DWright, as much as I hate to admit it, I agree with what the guy said. I think we have nothing but a bunch of “nice guys” and PC conscious individuals. We need some balls, big time.

  4. GravediggerHebner says:

There is NO short term response to Hole Camels.

The only viable response is to be ahead of the Phillies at the end of 2009.

  5. QnsNative1718 says:

But not to stray off topic, its good to see an analyst give the Mets 4 of the top 5 Winter Meeting aquisitions. Still got some work to do.

  6. Jaded1983 says:

Dude really? Just because Dwright and reyes may give you canned answers doesnt mean they have no heart/fire.

what about all the grief that other players give them mets above reyes “antics?” Id say he is fully invested in the game and cares about the outcome.

do you remember that phillys game where DWright came sliding across the plate to tie either the tieing or go-ahead run and came up yelling and pumping his fists?

those two guys are NOT the problem, get off it.

  7. QnsNative1718 says:

    *3 of the top 5.

  8. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

unclutch is a phillies phan..who cares what he thinks…Hamels was roped into that statement and took it hook line and sinker..he won a championship, we know but on the other hand if the mets have a healthy bullpen he doesnt make the playoffs.

  9. TBlz says:

Ignore him, he will go away.

  10. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

hey unclutch..how good are the phillies without lidge…yea that’s what i thought

  11. QnsNative1718 says:

    (7)

The “antics” you mention are our guys having fun playing the game. Its the Phillies finding an excuse to hate us. I am not saying our boys dont play with fire, Im saying that when the Phillies jar and smack talk I want our players to jar back, grill the Phillies dugout, see more “1″ fingers pointed in the air etc..

  12. jamie says:

Omar’s had an outstanding winter so far, and we’ve started 09 off great. We basically won the winter meetings; next we’ll win the division, the pennant, and the whole enchilada. *

    LGM!
*pending a couple more minor moves :-)

  13. MetzFanInTX says:

Is everyone forgeting that the Mets where 2nd in NL in Runs scored? what did us in what our bull pen. Guys were being played in roles they are not use to. Now our bull pen is solid(albeit on paper).

  14. kingman 26 says:

Losers in Philly booed Mike Schmidt, just like sad, mal-adjusted, unrealistic, miserable losers like Furioso/DWright Unclutch come on here again and again saying the EXACT same thing.

He doesn’t want the Mets to win, as he wants to be miserable, and coming on here and baiting all of us is clearly something that he enjoys tremendously.

Hopefully he will be banned again soon, as the way he is able to dominate threads with his idiotic drivel is unfair and ridiculous.

  15. QnsNative1718 says:

Basically we need to be more like 1986.

  16. zen says:

great start, but major work to still be done. major work on the starting staff and the mets also need a bat.

k-rod replaces and improves wags. putz is a huge upgrade.

phils improved themselves a lot too. replaced a low character burrell for a high character, under-rated ibanez.

  17. mistermet says:

Not enough, Omar’s work is maybe 25% done…

If the Mets are too cheap too get Manny, Ibanez would have been perfect, and you let your arch rival get him cheap. That was pretty infuriating, and reading this also makes my blood boil:

Mets GM Omar Minaya recently admitted he did not expect to pursue A.J. Burnett orDerek Lowe, saying, “I’m probably not going to be in there right now, financially. Not after spending all the money that I did on K-Rod.” Sherman isn’t sold, though – he thinks Lowe’s price could drop and give the Mets a shot.

…Excuse me, Omar? You just had at least 35 million come off the books. Spending 13 on K-Rod and a few more million on Putz along with some other players getting raises still leaves you at 12-15 million under last year’s payroll- plus god forbid you bump the payroll up another 10-15 million with the money you are raking in.

This is a joke. I guess they are going to get Jason Marquis (he’s pretty bad), and call it an offseason, and play Tatis, Murphy in left, Castillo at 2nd.

It’s amazing to me that a team who fell on their face again last year (and had their arch rival win it all) would bring back the same manager, the exact same starting 8 offensive lineup (that withered yet again down the stretch), and the same rotation minus Perez plus a worse guy in Marquis or Wolf, etc…Yeah they have a good 8th and 9th inning RP now, but this is just a disgrace and I don’t know why more people aren’t up in arms about it. I’ve heard a few people on WFAN bitch about it, but not nearly enough.

  18. GravediggerHebner says:

The Phils lineup just got more lefthanded, meaning that either keeping Feliciano, Scho, (or both) around and sticking strictly with them in the LOOGY role, or acquiring other LH RP is important.

  19. chicagometfan says:

Putz was finally healthy in Sept of 2008
    His numbers for Sept
    8IP
    13K’s
    2BB
    5 hits
    5 for 5 in saves

  20. DHarrisDBS34 says:

If someone told you before the Meetings that the Mets would acquire 3 of the 4 best players moved and all of them were relievers, I think you’d be pretty damn happy, and believe it too.

  21. toomanyuniforms says:

Ibanez gives you Burrell’s production without the Old City hangovers.

Mets still need someone unafraid to tackle Victorino on his way to the mound. Although I’ll take a corner outfielder who can hit, too. If Pagan comes back, there are a lot of guys to throw out there flanking Captain Stoic, but I’m not sure we have confidence that any of them will be productive for 150+ games.

  22. TBlz says:

I am spitballing here, but has anyone ever left a man on 3rd with no outs before?

  23. Nordberg says:

I’m sorry but unclutch is a total idiot. Please go play in traffic.

  24. QnsNative1718 says:

The guy is obviously trying to bait you. He’s having a field day getting you all worked up. Just ingore the guy like he was a leper.

  25. toomanyuniforms says:

“DWright” doubtless showed this guy’s girlfriend just how “clutch” he is on a recent road trip.

  26. alex242 says:

out of 32 teams in the ML nobody, and i MEAN NOBODY has a left side of the field as good as OURS!!! and you know what guys, let’s keep it real, they DID choke in 2007, last year they sort of did because regardless of everything they were 3 games up in the standings with 17 games left and only 1 team (the cubs) left with a winning record.. althoug i say they overchieve they still had a shot to make it and once again folded (specially that game against the cubs)

  27. a1boogz says:

My bigger concern is why people think it’s okay to slam people with great accomplishments. I mean last season all we heard was that Santana had lost something, he wasn’t the same player, then he went out and gave us the best season we’ve seen from an SP in a long time.

Now everyone is saying KRod has lost a step because his whip and BABIP were up a bit last season, but the man is only 26/27 year’s old.

    Keith Law should STFU

  28. HOFMets57 says:

    Gravedigger,

Agree wholeheartedly. Which is why I’ve been a BIG proponent of bringing back Ollie, as well. Having LH starters AS WELL as relievers will prove crucial against the Phillies and Braves.

**Although, if the Cubs want Schoeneweis for Marquis, you pull the trigger and find a LHR on the FA market or through another trade. The only thing worse than a shallow bullpen is a shallow starting rotation…

  29. zen says:

he’s not getting anyone worked up.

it’s just annoying to shift thru his comments and the responses to them. the thread has nothing to do with wright.

  30. QnsNative1718 says:

    (32)

With all due respect, we gotta leave 2006 behind us.

  31. toomanyuniforms says:

Did Matt ever provide an explanation for why he went to this neolithic comments format?

  32. jamie says:

he did, it’s because of traffic during the winter meetings

  33. toomanyuniforms says:

SO, one day, I trust, we will revert to the nested style that made Metsblog famous . . . although it did allow 150 post slap fights between “Costanza81″ and “VCarver/Free Aaron Heilman/ whomever”

  34. therealsince86 says:

Get Everyday Eddie when you unload Show. He for sure is not a LOOGY. Although LH, his splits are no where near as drastic.

  35. mark4212 says:

DwrightisUnclutch listens to too much Mike Francesca….. Jeter is the consummate professional, D-Wright has no Heart.

    It’s all a media spin.

  36. therealsince86 says:

Can’t we just all get along and agree to never respond to unclutch again?

  37. GravediggerHebner says:

    HOFMets57

Good point. I’m so ambivalent about Ollie, but I don’t see the FA out there who will do the job with greater certainty (either in performance or health).

Some random names of LH SP from the FA list:

    Shawn Estes
    Tom Glavine
    Mark Hendrickson
    Randy Johnson
    Mark Mulder
    Odalis Perez
    Andy Pettitte
    Mark Redman
    Randy Wolf

That list kinda makes Ollie grow on me.

  38. tuffasnails4 says:

Heroes…No. Treated like they are all-stars…yes, because they are.

Before this year Utley Howard and Rollins were all treated the same as Wright and Reyes and they hadnt won anything yet either.

  39. GravediggerHebner says:

See, you change the argument when it suits your needs.

I settle for arguing the point laid out.

    That’s the difference.

You settle for “I’ll just twist this around and attribute someone else’s words to you.”

I settle for arguing the actual point.

  40. Holy crud, it just hit me. We have J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez. This is not a bullpen upgrade, it’s a revolution.

It’s practically overkill. Even if our starting pitching only moves laterally in quality, our team is still at least 5 or 6 wins better, probably more.

  41. tuffasnails4 says:

Nobody is settling, we all want to win the world series. I went to college around Philly and I saw how they treated Utley and Howard and it was nothing different than how we look at Wright and Reyes. This was pre world series.

  42. therealsince86 says:

Good lord why do we keep responding and messing up a good blog with garbage?

Anyway, back to Ollie. There is no doubt that Ollie is better than those guys on the list but is he enough to pay 4/60 or 5/70? Not to mention that you lose 2 picks for resigning him that we would get if we let him walk and sign any guy not a type A or not offered arbitration.

  43. TBlz says:

ok, trs. what if boras over-plays his hand, and the price will come down to 3 yrs, at whatever ollie wants. do you do it then?

  44. alex242 says:

    TRS:

we’re most likely ar gonna sign him or wolf due to the addition of the overrated ibanez to the phillies

  45. GravediggerHebner says:

    therealsince86 53

    Good points in both paragraphs.

I am a tad worried about going into the season with just 1 LH starter. If I were more confident in Wolf’s health, I’d be happy with him (but then again he’d be more widely coveted and more expensive).

As you laid out, it’s all about pros and cons and weighing them, and I’m glad I only have to do it in theory, not in highly public practice.

  46. toomanyuniforms says:

I’d sign Ollie for 3 years, sure. He’s had some success in big games before, and no one is pretending he’s an ace-in-waiting anymore.

  47. therealsince86 says:

Good question TBlz. I still think that in this market he gets at least 4/50 and that still may be too much considering the picks lost and the cheaper alternatives.
What if you could have Marquis and Garland for the same price as Perez and did not give up picks?

  48. alex242 says:

Why not offer sheets 3 years 39 millions and get over with it?
i’m sure he’ll sign right away if he sees that… i’d offer wolf 2 years at 16.. start from there..

  49. mark4212 says:

    Alex,

I’m all for Sheets at that. And pray he doesn’t have a serious injury or makes 32 starts a year.

  50. therealsince86 says:

Like I said, I think if we can’t get Lowe or the big names then we should just be patient and see what happens. Maybe Ollie gets spooked and settles for much less or even a shorter deal to try and hit FA still under 30 2 years from now. Maybe Wolf, Garland or other backend guys get left out and end up with a Loshe contract. Just be patient on the SP market. No reason to over pay all of these guys.

  51. zen says:

    k-rod
    putz
    feliciano
    green
    parnell
    sanchez
    stokes

looking good. it’s essential that the mets add 2 starters who consistently pitch well into the 7th inning to keep this pen fresh and at peak performance.

i’d like to see something tweeked with the offense. either a little grit, some pop, or a second spark plug

  52. TBlz says:

    good question, also.
I am scared of both Garland’s and Marquis periphs. Wolf is more interesting because he has better numbers, and he’s LH, but his health is an issue.
So, ideally, Wolf is healthy all season, I’d say him.
As far as the picks go, I think that in baseball, it’s abstract, a tad. Would any of those picks even sniff the bigs within the life of Ollies new contract? Look at our picks from this year. Realistically, someone give me the odds of any given 1st rounder making it as a star in the bigs.

  53. toomanyuniforms says:

Agree wholeheartedly on the tweak. I think we can manage a fifth starter out of duct tape and bubblegum if we can’t get a second starter. We definitely need one, however. Two is preferable, but only because I don’t trust Maine.

  54. alex242 says:

    Mark:
I’m all for Sheets at that. And pray he doesn’t have a serious injury or makes 32 starts a year.

u want me to pray that shets doesn’t make 32 starts?? lol.. i won’t pray then..

lol, i just hope we get him and for once forget about a good player having injuries, last time this happen we lost guerrero.. and how that turned out

  55. toomanyuniforms says:

Alex, how did it turn out with Pedro?

  56. alex242 says:

agree, but we HAD to have him.. sheets is more elbow than shopulder, his velocity is the same, pedro was more shoulder after 05.. with that said i mention that even though i don’t want him, omar should now make a move on peavy..

  57. NYMETSFAN718 says:

and alou, and el duque lol

  58. therealsince86 says:

Those picks are important because they allow us to trade for players who do help.

Why not try the old Omar trick and offer all of the current SP a market value contract and see which one bites first.

    Lowe 3/50
    Sheets 3/33
    Ollie 3/36
    Wolf 2/18
    Garland 2/20
    Johnson 1/6
Any other’s I missed besides Burnett?
Take the first one and see where you are. If it’s a big name then go get Marquis. If not then wait for the next guy.

  59. alex242 says:

if we’re not going hard after manny or tex we should make a big push for either sheets, lowe and yes.. peavy.. but not forgetting to fill out 2 more roster spots (guardado & cordero) to be complete..

  60. mr.gee21 says:

TRS: dare we add Smoltz to that list?

  61. I’ll take either Lowe or Ollie, but not for the money they both want. If that’s the case, give me Garland and I’ll be content. I don’t know why, but I’ve just got a really good feeling about that guy….it’s dumb but something tells me he could be a solid pitcher for the Mets, especially with the BP we are putting together.

  62. mr.gee-
Yes, add Smoltz to the list. I don’t care that he is a lifelong Brave, I have always idolized him. But if we offer, we better not go over 1-2 years.

  63. TBlz says:

Well, I think we have seen that Omar is about a little misdirection this winter. Don’t show your hand type of thing, so who knows what is the true plan.
The point I was making about the picks, is the round doesnt always indicate future ability.

  64. mistermet says:

The Mets’ expectations for offseason moves, along with their fans’ expectations, are way, way too low.

  65. Well it doesn’t help that the Yankees are throwing ridiculous money at anybody who can throw…They really are being irresponsible in the way they are offering, because it is driving up the price on everyone else. I think Omar has played it perfect so far, and I hope he continues to address our needs, but for a reasonable price.

  66. Ottic0 says:

Add Jason Marquis…re-sign Ollie and Pedro..and try to sway Derek Lowe to our rotation.

As far as power try to get rid of Luis Castillo even thought nobody wants him and add a powerful young infielder…how about Michael Young!

  67. garfios says:

We need an outfielder too, Milton Bradley will be the perfect fit, he will show some emotions, when needed and not needed, not to mention that he has some talent.

  68. jamie says:

tmu, the slap fights are what made metsblog so special!

  69. metskid96 says:

I am so glad! Now they need 3 more starting pithchers. I preffer Marquis and garland for the 4 and 5 spot, Burnett or Lowe for the number 2 spot. for second base, let castillo start the season, if he gets off to a bad start, trade him away and get another second basemen. For left field, I’m 50 50 about Ibanez.I dont know whether to get him, or keep Murphey and Tatis. Thogh now i am starting to lean towards murphey and tatis.

  70. metskid96 says:

I changed my mind. My pitchers would be sheets, Burnett and marquis. How do you guys think about that?

  71. gipper82475 says:

    zen (51),

    Spot-on.

PS: Matt, the meetings are over, let’s revert to the normal comments format!!
