Links: Rosters, Megatron, Wright, and Lil Wayne

By Regis Courtemanche on Dec 17, 2008, 4:00 pm

At Sully Baseball, Paul Sullivan compares the best all time Mets roster of home grown players versus their best acquired players.

…very cool, i would take the homegrown rotation any time…

New York Mets Online pleads their case to keep Oliver Perez.

The guys at League of Nations would rather see Megatron at the plate than Pat Burrell, and give their reasons why.

Ted Berg of SNY chimes in on whether or not David Wright is, among other things, overrated writing:

“Take a look at the list of Hall Of Fame third basemen.  How many of them had four full seasons with an OPS+ over 130 before they turned 26, as Wright does? Just one: Eddie Matthews.  Dick Allen did it too (and probably belongs in the Hall of Fame), but none of the others saw so much consistent success so early in his career.”

…i don’t know how people can say that the mets should trade wright for reasons like ‘he is not clutch’… in my opinion they just say it for shock value since that argument carries very little weight, even if he sometimes fails to come through at the plate…he more than makes up for those rare shortcomings the rest of the time…

Im not sure why Lil Wayne has a blog at ESPN, but he approves of the Mets signing K-Rod.

…oh, thank goodness…

On that note, this site proves that there is a blog for just about everything.

I don’t know how somebody can say we’ll only have to put up with this crappy comment layout for a week and then ignore all the users who plead for him to put the old style back, almost two weeks later!!!!!

I’m not sure why Regis Courtemanche and the rest of those dopes over at MEtsblog have a blog, but they apparently also approve of the Mets signing K’Rod.

    Oh, thank goodness.

Hey, here’s this post again, I saw this an hour ago before it was taken down lol.

Anyways…I love the Sully baseball article and Ted Berg has a good one too.

before we start bashing him, in all fairness, he needs to shut up sometimes, he gives away too many quotes, like “HE MADE A GREAT 3-2 PITCH THAT STRUCK ME OUT” . He’s the future of the mets but he needs to addres-s that as well as not get caught up with his numbers..

Wow…from the ESPN link (Lil Wayne):

“I’ve thought about it, and my song would be “Closing Time” by that group Semisonic. You know the one: Closing Tiiiiiiiime. Except I’d just have that loop over and over again “Closing Tiiiiiiime, Closing Tiiiiiiiime” while I came in from the bullpen.”

That might be the worst choice for closer’s theme ever. It is just so…unintimidating.

I, for one, had no idea Lil’ Wayne was a Semisonic fan. His choice of Purple Rain for an at-bat song is pretty inspired, though.

    IAmKeithHernandez;

I believe Lil’ Wayne is employing what is known as “reverse psychology” in his choice of closer entrance music. The man is a genius.

“i don’t know how people can say that the mets should trade wright for reasons like ‘he is not clutch’”

Fatcessa started this in order to create some buzz for his MadDog-less, punchless show. And like sheep, some sports fans actually gave credibility to Fatcessa’s brainbird idea.

Can you bring back the old-style comment section please?

heres what lil wayne said bout the mets signng k-rod got it off espn.com
I’m a big fan of the Mets signing K-Rod. That was a smart move for them because they’ve got all the talent in the world but they’ve lacked that killer instinct to push them over the top.

Is DW overrated? I don’t think so.

Is his defense overrated? Maybe. (notwithstanding his two gold gloves).

Is he clutch? As much as anyone, I suppose.

Does he strike out often in clutch situation? I don’t know if it’s more he should, but it seems so.

I enjoy the information your blog provides, but please, Matt, can you stop with all the “the way I understand,” “from what I hear,” “for what it’s worth,” “the way I read it,” stuff. Every single post is littered with it.

    To OP:

I wish people would stop being apologists when it comes from David Wright. He was flat out with RISP, not just “some times” he was awful 75% of the time. Delgado was clutch and Beltran was clutch at the last month at least.

Yet, I’m seeing trade proposals for Delgado and he was the most clutched hitter on the plannet. Absolutely obsurd. I could also say that this Mets fan base does not like Carlos Beltran, and that is a fact.

    Dec 18, 2008, 1:25 am at 1:25 am #

People need to shut up, A-ROD is the least clutch person but yea people rave about him because of his numbers and the globs of RBIS he gets per RBI hit. I am happy the mets arent built and centered around one person, whereas david wright or beltran have to make big hits. Our clutch players will not come from hitters but from our pitching which has defined great Met teams in the past. We have a great flyball pitchers park, and so we arent gonna get players who are going to hit for great hr numbers. One thing people need to address about David Wright is that he gets to pull happy, and so in the beginning, he usually hits the other way, which is dangerous against other teams and something we yearned for and had with xavier nady (who i liked a lot and miss for his godd left handed hitting) David wright i believe falls into too much pressure and thats why pitchers learn to pitch away with sliders against him (watch every john smoltz matchup in the past against david wright and count the number of hard sliders he throws). David wright, if he tries to go the other way like he did his rookie and second second, will be that much more dangerous again. All the great players have told david wright to just be natural and try not to let the pressure get to him. We need David wrightl he may not have the mouth that we need in him like a pedro and a krod will have (which we really need) but at least he takes every at bat seriously and tries to carry the team on his shoulders unlike certain players on the team.

    For Mr. Bacons:

“He was flat out with RISP, not just “some times” he was awful 75% of the time.”

    DWright Career with RISP: .300/.394/.501
So I guess he only fails 70% of the time. And only fails to reach base 60.6%.

“Yet, I’m seeing trade proposals for Delgado and he was the most clutched hitter on the plannet. Absolutely obsurd.”

That’s true about Delgado being “clutched.” In fact, he led the NL in hugs received over the last few years. It’s probably more Absurd to expect that someone with a limited grasp of English would be able to understand what makes a good baseball player.

” I could also say that this Mets fan base does not like Carlos Beltran, nd that is a fact.”

Speak for yourself dude, because I happen to think that Beltran is awesome.

Sorry if I was mean, but I find it ridiculous that there even have to be “apologists” for David Wright. He is going to go down as the greatest Met of all time (non-pitcher).

So, that Sully Baseball link was cool.

Except who here would take Bud Harrelson over Jose Reyes.

    I’m still waiting.

Oh, and personally, I’d take Rey Ordonez over Rafael Santana. But they’re essentially the same player, so it doesn’t make much of a difference.

  38. Coolpapabell
    Dec 18, 2008, 10:49 am at 10:49 am #

Yeah, I would have to agree, that Reyes is much better the Bud Harrelson. Rafael Santana was all glove no bat, but Rey Ordonez had an Ozzie Smith type glove game so I would have to go with Rey.

Reyes has Bud beat in almost every single statistical catagory created…u know u have an agenda with the guy when the ONLY thing u mention is the fact that he is a “hotdog”

    lol

Bud or Kevin Elster need to be on that list as a backup…
