Quote: J.J. Putz just wants to Win
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 18, 2008 2:27 pm

J.J. Putz was introduced to reporters today at Citi Field.

Putz later was as a guest on WFAN, which you can listen to here.

When asked by WFAN whether it will be difficult serving as a set-up man to Francisco Rodriguez, Putz said, “I just want to win, man.  It’s gonna be fine.  I’ve done it before, and Frankie is not a bad guy to have to set up.”

Putz said, of course, he prefers to be a closer, ‘but at the same time, winning is Priority No. 1, and if that means I have to pitch in the sixth or seventh inning some time, so be it.”

Putz says he loves the pressure, he knows New York is bigger, he’s excited for the pressure and can’t wait to feed off the fan’s energy in Citi Field, which, he says, ‘by the way, I saw earlier and it’s incredible.’

I heard Putz on wfan and I was impressed with him. Sounds like a genuine guy. Also, Jerry stated he wanted to use Frankie/Putz on a 70/30 percent basis as closer. Frankie would go 70% while Putz 30%.

  2. SimulatedGameMVP says:

How did Putz respond when he was asked, “J.J., how do you feel about the current comments format on Metsblog?”

  3. roman411 says:

    1. Expect 80/20
    2. Putz replied “The old format was so much better.’

He talks a good game and plays a good game. Let’s hope it translates.

  4. QnsNative1718 says:

    LMAO..

  5. jlaz89 says:

    Is he wearing #40?

  6. QnsNative1718 says:

    Yes.

  7. NewYorkMetfanatic62 says:

Putz is a well spoken guy. I wonder if he’ll take on any leadership roles with the bullpen. Glad he’s a Met and hope he does well here in NY.

  8. Lmao…people are just gonna keep hammering Matt about the new comments thing.

  9. NewYorkMetfanatic62 says:

Putz also said on WFAN that he would be talking to Howard Johnson about the number 20.

  10. QnsNative1718 says:

Yea he seems like a guy that shoots from the hip. He comes off like a leader and a no BS kinda guy. We’ll see…

  11. therealsince86 says:

Guys I don’t think many of us realize that Wagner has a 2010 option for 8 million. Not likely be we could pickup Wagner and Putz’s options and trade Krod. Wouldn’t that be an interesting situation. Either way, would we pick up Wagner’s option and try and trade him? Think someone would want him at 1 year 8 million?

  12. wadehead9 says:

Next jersey I’m going to get is Putz. I’d walk around so proud with that baby on my back.

Incidently, do we know what number he is going to wear yet?

  13. QnsNative1718 says:

Didnt Wags say hes pitched his last days as a Met?

  14. QnsNative1718 says:

    #40

  15. NYMETSFAN718 says:

    thereal

you are right, not alot of people know that, but imagine what the mets would be able to get in return for say putz and/or wagner as trade pieces.

  16. NYMETSFAN718 says:

    in seperate trades of course.

  17. therealsince86 says:

NYMetsfan you are right. It’s going to make for some interesting debates on here next year. But what does impress me is how many options Omar now has if things don’t go as planned.

  18. NYMETSFAN718 says:

maybe restock the farm with some top tier prospects.

  19. zen says:

    dear mr. heilman,

did you hear how putz handled a much bigger demotion?

    sincerely,

    mets fans

  20. PeterDragon says:

a few days ago I heard Putz intereviewed by Dave Sims on XM radio; he seems a good guy- maybe a modern day Roger McDowell, as for the Mariners he was the prank guy (ie- whipped cream to the face of guys who just got first win, etc)

  21. Aquadealer says:

I think Heliman would have been fine with this new comment format.

  22. jlaz89 says:

THAT’S who! I forgot about HoJo for a minute…my bad…i was like “what is stopping him from taking 20″? My bad…

  23. stickguy says:

62, pretty much all the leadership roles in the pen are up for grabs this year!

Quite possibly, the only holdovers end up being Feliciano and Sanchez, and I doubt they will be in the running for the ” king of the pen” title!

  24. Wanny Backstra says:

Unless Wagner comes back at the end of this year (unlikely) no one will want to pay him $8m next season without seeing him pitch first.

  25. erik says:

Best lines he had were, “My job is to close the game in the 8th inning.” and “I may have to give Ibanez some chin music first time I face him.” That’s the additude that this team needs

  26. bigchart333 says:

    thereal
    nymetsfan

hey, i love u guys both, GREAT posters here..but jesus, the guys JUST signed, and ur already talkin bout the bounty the mets would get to trade them??? lol

im guilty too, i said “pick up putz option and trade him in 2010″….if that aint ur mets fan mentality i dont know what is

  27. bigchart333 says:

    oh and Zen—

POST OF THE YEAR!!! Thats right Heilman, thats how u take a “demotion”…its wahts best for the team

  28. Wanny Backstra says:

he and ibanez are probably buddies. i would read more into that as a joke than a threat.

  29. CaseStreet says:

Darn, I guess Alou isn’t coming back. Hopefully, that number isn’t cursed.

  30. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

I think putz was kidding around about the ibanez thing. but with that being said he seems like the no nonsense type of guy that WOULD give someone chin music if it was necessary.

  31. egnirc says:

What is Robinson Cancel going to say about his number being taken? Potential trouble there!

  32. The_Fonz says:

Casestreet, alou didn’t wear 40. He wore the beloved Straw’s number.

  33. longislandmetsfan says:

oh yeah, that was canel’s #…interesting…

  34. erik says:

It may have been a joke about Ibanez, but I don’t think he’ll have any issues about making Rollins or Uggla eat some dirt for crowding the plate. That’s what I like. Back to the beginning of ‘06 when Met pitchers were leading the league in hit batters for crowding the plate. No-one would go near the inside of the box after the first ten games.

  35. alex242 says:

the immortal ambiorix burgos wore #40

  36. egnirc says:

Alex, hah that shows how much faith the Mets had in him that Cancel used the number while Burgos was rehabbing.

  37. anditsouttahere says:

he looks like a regular in blue and orange. very sharp

  38. alex242 says:

He throws 98-99!! HE CAN LOOK LIKE A BUM FOR ALL I CARE!!

  39. LNBGS says:

Both Frankie and JJ said all the right things and sounded pretty believable so I think this combo will be hugely successful unlike Matt new comment format.

  40. CaseStreet says:

Why is there a need to create controversy? Everyone’s trying to make this K-Rod vs. Putz thing.

  41. Oliver Perez-S-Mets Dec. 18 – 3:32 pm et

SI.com’s Jon Heyman believes the Mets and free agent Oliver Perez are too far apart in negotiations for a deal to be reached.

Heyman lists the Brewers, Dodgers, Reds and perhaps the Mariners as potential suitors for Perez. He’s believed to want $14 million per season for five years.

  42. starz31 says:

AJ Burnett got 5 years…so it makes sense Ollie, I mean Boras, is campaigning for that.

  43. gipper82475 says:

    CaseStreet,

    It sells papers.

  44. K-Putz says:

I am really about using Putz as a fireman. I can’t count how many times the Mets had a small lead in the 6th or 7th with based loaded and 0/1 out. This is the time the game needs to be saved, not the 9th! I guess the whole ’save’ stat being garbage is another discussion, but I think using Putz in this manner will give us 4-6 games that we would not have won otherwise.

  45. sundaysection15 says:

yeah, starz, if injury-prone burnett can get 5, Ollie should want 5 as well. When they asked Ollie about the Mets he replied with a very simple, “only if Cerrone changes that Metsblog comment section.”

  46. Wanny Backstra says:

Pereaz signing with Seattle or Cincy would be disastrous. Their first round picks are protected from being compensatory picks.

  47. NJMike says:

I love JJ closing 20% or 30% of the time and unlike everyone else I love the new format!
