Murphy at 1B in 2010 is fine... in a vacuum

with no production coming from C and 2B, and presumed below average production in LF, you cant have Murphy being a below average 1B as well. He doesnt hit or defend well enough in that scenario.

The best thing about him is that they can play him at a few position and make other moves around him, or move him in a trade.
I see them letting F. Martinez be that below average player in LF, while eventually moving Murphy for pitching or an upgrade at catcher.

They just dont seem to be able to develop position players anymore.

Too many pitchers being drafted and held onto. Especially relief pitchers. Murphy and Evans are basically those league average players, in the Mets eyes anyway...

To be fair there are a bunch of 2B/SS's in the system that have failed to progress well (Manny Garcia, Pellot, Lagares, Veloz, etc)
Catcher has been a major cluster F in recent years. They can't even develop good backup catchers anymore like they had for 30 years.

It would be a scoop if he is suggesting they are interested in signing BOTH players. Everyone else knows its one or the other...

Jefferies could be a good comparison, and it would be a bad career if Murphy was a comparable player.

But if you could trade Murphy now as a potential everyday 3B and he ends up like Jefferies then it would be a mistake.

I'm guessing we will see one of Murphy or FM traded next winter. They are a little redundant, but I think the Mets want to see FM do something before trading what is perhaps the better of the two.

If Murphy is a .290 - 15 - 90 player with a .800 OPS then he can get by with below average defense.

I see those numbers more as his ceiling, not an average year.

why does it matter Gina...i agree that OBP is more important stat than BA...but BA still carries an importance. This is because when players go in cold streaks pitchers will be more likely to pound the strike zone...and a player that has the ability to hit for a higher BA will be able to grind out hits. Kinda how Beltran who is a career .275 hitter or so wont be able to get a big base hit when he slumps down the stretch..

your forgetting how Beltre is an 18 million per year bust for the seattle mariners....while Murphy makes nothing. Lets trade for a player that makes a ton of money that hasnt lived nearly up to his contract..

Beltre is a defensive master at 3rd who could play 2nd easily; and Beltre has offensive and defensive value, whereas Murphy only has offensive value. And part of the deal would be restocking the farm. And Beltre should be more valuable than Murphy in 2009 and beyond.
