Quote: J.J. Putz is Fine, Glad to join KRod
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 19, 2008 10:20 am

Mets RHP J.J. Putz was introduced to reporters yesterday during a Q&A and tour of Citi Field.

In case you missed it, click here to check out video the event.

Putz, speaking about Francisco Rodriguez, while talking with reporters, said:

“I’m just glad I don’t have to watch him on the other side anymore because he killed us… It’s going to be great.  He’s a lot of fun to watch, I’ll tell you that.  He’s been as dominant as anybody in this game the last few years.  He’s not a bad guy to have to set up… I’m fine with the role.  Like I said, bottom line, I just want to win.”

frankly, the best news of the day came when putz told reporters his walk-on music will be Thunderstruck by AC/DC, which hasn’t graced a Mets game since the late 1990s…

To read more about Putz’s day in Citi Field, as well as quotes from his talk with reporters, check out the Associated Press, the Star-Ledger, the New York Post, and the Daily News.

By the way, to learn all you’ll need to know about his last name, where it comes from, how it’s pronounced, how it’s not pronounced, and so on, check out the New York Times.

    love this quote from Putz.

  2. CaseStreet says:

I just hope this Putz v. K-Rod thing stops. I’d hate for this rivalry thing to get blown out of proportion.

    • TBlz says:

The New York media is nothing if it isnt predictable. Start something where there aint nothing.

    • starz31 says:

I know what you’re saying…but from what I read today it sounds like they wont instigate it too much. I think they liked how Putz handled it yesterday and they covered it pretty good so far…

Things might get interesting once/when Krod blows that first save.

      • wnymetsfan says:

Media can try to start anything they want. All I care about is that Putz and KRod seem to be perfectly fine with the situation especially Putz. As long as the players are fine the situation will be fine.

  3. insidetheparkdouble says:

Thunderstruck? Really? You can do better if you’re going with AC/DC. Since he’s not in the closer role, how about Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap?

  4. nostradamus says:

what is krod’s walk on musuc?

  5. if at first says:

j.j.’s come out to “thunderstruck” in seattle for years. as a recent emerald city expat, i can tell you it was one of the few genuinely awesome experiences at safeco. bonus: he didn’t rip his music off from mariano.

    • starz31 says:

He didn’t rip his song off mariano…lol…funny but not actually true.

Is it possible that our 8th inning guy has a better song than our 9th inning guy?

  6. iluvmookie says:

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a set up man having a song before but Thunderstruck was made for an entry song.
Kinda like wild thing in Major League.

  7. Burn_Philly_Down says:

    You’ve been……….THUNDERSTRUCK!!

  8. Burn_Philly_Down says:

Can’t wait to hear that opening riff…the electricity (no pun intended) is going to be insaneee

  9. djbutler says:

I can envision a crowd of 40,000 stamping their feet chanting “thunder”. K-Rod uses Sandungueoso by Tego Calderon. The beat is good, but I can’t see the crowd chanting or stamping their feet. They will sway, but you won’t feel the stadium move. How cool would it be if they could talk K-Rod into coming into Ride the Lightning by Metallica. Then we could call Putz and K-Rod Thunder and Lightning. That would be cool! I’m such a dork.

  10. phukthephills says:

    my opening day prediction

    johan – 7 ip 8 k 2 bb 4 h 3 runs 1 earned, 1 hr
    putz – 1ip 2 k 1 h 0 runs hold
    krod – 1 ip 2 k 0 h 0 runs save

    rbis – reyes 2, church 1, wright 3
    homers – wright 1, church 1
    doubles – reyes 1, beltran

    mets win – 6-3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Lightweis says:

How about instead of chanting “THUN – DER”, everyone chants “J – J”. I think that would be pretty cool, and get the guy pumped up beyond belief.

The more I read about JJ and check out some closing performances on mlb video, the more excited I am about the season….

  12. Nightlife says:

I think I would be happy never hearing Thunderstruck again.

  13. Nightlife says:

Every reliever last year should have came out to Herb Alpert’s “Spanish Flea”.

    • NYMETSFAN718 says:

      Nightlife,

I think that ALL Met relievers should have came out to Nirvana’s “All Opologies”.

  14. darknova says:

Man, the more I see and hear of Putz the more I think he’s got exactly what it takes for this city and to adjust to his new role. This is going to be fun to watch.

  15. therealsince86 says:

I think what will be interesting is next offseason with a potential of Krod, Putz and Wagner being under contract. What the Mets do with having 3 closers under contract and who stays and gets traded will be quite the soap opera.

    • reyesnwright says:

I’m pretty sure Wagner’s contract is up at the end of the ‘09 season.
Does anyone think there is a chance of Wagner coming back in September? I know he says he’s pitched his last game as a Met, but it would make sense for him to want to come back as he would be essentially pitching for a contract. If he can pitch well for a month, I’m sure someone would sign him as a closer. Wouldn’t the usual time table on Tommy John have him coming back around then? It would certainly be an interesting situation.

  16. I know I’m hoping against hope, but I really hope the tabloids stay away from the idiotic use of Putz’s last name in any sort of negative fashion.

I mean, come on. What are we, eight?

  17. Peter says:

    Thanks for changing back Matt!

  18. longislandmetsfan says:

i think we can pretty much count wagner out…even if he makes it back in september, if jj and krod are healthy and doing well, do you mess with that formula? unless perhaps they give him an inning here and there, like the 7th, or if either of the other 2 guys are being overworked, then maybe bring him in?

    • reyesnwright says:

Oh yeah, I wasn’t suggesting that he pitch in the 8th or 9th- if he has to then we are in terrible shape. I mean more of a 6th/7th inning guy just to show other teams he is healthy. It just seems like it is something he would want to do just to get a contract for 2010.

      • wnymetsfan says:

It is possible depending on how he heals. But remember he would need to be able to pitch late July early part of August in order to rehab to pitch in September. I would think it most likely would not happen based on your typical timetable for that type of surgery but if he can and the Mets need him I can see him doing it. Helps him get a contract for 2010 showing he is healthy again.

      • Peter says:

I’m thinking that, no matter what, Wags is sping training invite for someone. I’m not sure someone is signing him right after surgery

  19. nsr says:

    to dantheanswermurphy,

no offense but i think i came up with that nickname when we first got putz. and krod comes into daddy yankees, Gasolina.

    THUNDER AND LIGHTING

  20. dave27 says:

Were Reed and Green invited to this presser? Kind of odd if not….

    LETS GO METS!
