I love the end.

‘Yeah, you’re welcome’
idk why I found it funny just usually ends with a ‘no problem’ or ‘catch ya later’. lol

starz31 December 19, 2008 at 1:42 pm

haha…I liked the intro… “How ya doing” “I’m good, good…thanks.” lol

as for the actual news, Lowe is no Peavy, and Burnett, when on, is better than Lowe. That said, the market seems thin for a guy who has never been on the DL before and has a very consistent history. But He is not the savior kind of guy and we don’t need that…a very good #3 and #4 later on. I’d love to see him on the Mets for only a 3 year deal. Be a nice rotation.

oleosmirf December 19, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Lowe might not be “the savior” but we don’t need him to be.

all we need is for him to pitch just as well as he did in LA. 200+ IP 15 W ERA under 3.80

Other than Santana we have no other SP we can rely on.

Ollie, Wolf, Garcia, Redding, are not reliable guys and we dont need them here. Garland would be a decent plan B as long as its for 3 years or less

Deaner December 19, 2008 at 2:02 pm

exactly.

he’ll be our right-handed version of moyer, if you will.

if they get him for a reasonable contract, then they can take more of a risk with another pitcher…preferably sheets, but ollie would be okay

Derek Lowe’s last four years (his four years in LA) in ERA+:

114
124
118
131

Plus he never had a WHIP over 1.3 as a Dodger.

If he’s not a #2 starter, who is?

therealsince86 December 19, 2008 at 2:13 pm

There is not one on the marekt. He is a very solid to above average #3. Thats fine, but not a #2. I expect a #2 to pitch 200+ innings with mostly solid starts but have the ability in some games to pitch like a #1. That does not really describle Lowe. He is a #3. A guy I expect to be solid night in and night out. But never going to be flasy. Kind of like what Glavine was for the Braves for years.

And I really like the idea that the market for Garland is small. He would be a great pickup for the #5 and would actually allow you the posibility to trade Niese or even Maine later in the year or next offseason.

haplo December 19, 2008 at 2:20 pm

In three of his four years in LA, Lowe pitched over 200 innings; the one year he didn’t, he pitched 199.3. Last year he finished ninth in the league in ERA, ahead of Brandon Webb.

A rotation with Lowe as a #3 would be ridiculously amazing. On most playoff teams, he’d be a #2.

I think your standards are a bit high.

MetsLv31 December 19, 2008 at 2:36 pm

You’re both essentially right. He’s a 2.5, which on most teams becomes a #2 since most teams don’t have a totally dominant 1-2. If he can be your #3 and you have 2 clearly better starters in front of him, you are in pretty good shape..

DanTheAnswerMurphy December 19, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Mike Pelfrey

haplo December 19, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Sure, if he repeats what he did last year. Huge “if,” though. Not that I don’t think he’ll do fine; it’s just natural to expect some regression, especially considering his workload jumped so drastically last year from prior years.

If Maine and Pelfrey both turn out to give #3 production next year, the Mets should be thrilled (especially if they sign Lowe).

phuck da phills December 19, 2008 at 10:19 pm

what is era+. what are you talkin about?
those are not era’s i’m lookin at. I’m confused

LNBGS December 19, 2008 at 2:07 pm

“I’m good, good…thanks.” for restoring the reply format.

NYCESQ December 19, 2008 at 2:11 pm

He is a legitimate number 2 starter.

I think some fans have the idea that a no. 2 is supposed to be a 17/18 game winner. Team such as the Diamondbacks, and now the Yankees have two aces as their frontline starters. This doesn’t imply that a team with one ace isn’t capable of winning the world series. Look at the Phillies. During the regular season, our no.5 starter is just as important as our no.2. The one, two, and three are more of a factor during the playoffs.

All this being said, I’d love to have Lowe.

therealsince86 December 19, 2008 at 2:17 pm

I agree with the idea that you need solid 1-5 and I am fine not having a #2. But Lowe is not a #2.

NYCESQ December 19, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Ok, who do you feel a no.2 is?

wadehead9 December 19, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Lowe is a fringe #2.

oleosmirf December 19, 2008 at 4:17 pm

you overrate the 5th starter.

Lowe and Niese/whoever > Garland and Wolf

rM teM December 19, 2008 at 2:15 pm

So, What’s the deal with season tickets?
I go to the Mets site and the only thing I can
do is give them a $250.00 non refundable
deposit.
I don’t know what tickets may be available, I
don’t know what the prices may be and they
don’t even have the seating chart up yet.
I’m supposed to give them $250. for something I might not afford, or want to pay in
a section I may not want??

udontmesswiththejohan December 19, 2008 at 2:21 pm

That is why your “deposit” is “refundable”. In the event you decide you are not interested, then they will “refund” (i.e. return) your money. Wayyyyyyyyyy to much complaining on this site.

rM teM December 19, 2008 at 2:38 pm

the $250.00 deposit is

NON REFUNDABLE

udontmesswiththejohan December 19, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Ooops, well that changes everything. My apologies sir. Complain a way. That is ridiculous.

NYMETSFAN718 December 19, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Is it me, or does today seem like its dragging?

longislandmetsfan December 19, 2008 at 2:27 pm

BIG time…

F.Calisi December 19, 2008 at 2:30 pm

Agreed

udontmesswiththejohan December 19, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Time is going backwards. Yet, I’ve still learned nothing.

twofours44 December 19, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Lowe is a solid # 2/great # 3 and hes also the best option on the market. so you would like to get a guy like that. So if we add him we basically have a legit #1 and three #3’s. That is perfectly fine and a very capable rotation of being a world series contender.

NYCESQ December 19, 2008 at 2:42 pm

To add on to what you said, the projection of three no.3’s may turn out better than we thought it could. There is nothing that says that Maine can’t win 15, or Pelfry could win 16. I think our rotation could be a force to be reckoned with.

longislandmetsfan December 19, 2008 at 2:40 pm

So, seriously, putting fantasies aside, what does everyone REALLY think we are going to wind up doing as far as additional moves go?

MetsFan4Decades December 19, 2008 at 2:50 pm

I wish I knew. Given the fact that Omar was working on the J.J. Puts deal since late Oct. – and was one of the best well kept secrets this past month, anything could be going on behind the scenes right now….

MetsFan4Decades December 19, 2008 at 2:51 pm

Sorry – Putz

Blue_n_Orange December 19, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Yeah, Omar plays it close to the vest which is cool. I can tell you what I would like to happen. I’d like to see the Mets sign Lowe to a 3-year deal and find some way (if there is one Omar will find it) to move Castillo and bring in Michael Young from Texas to play second.

rM teM December 19, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Not only that, but it’s $250.00 NON REFUNDABLE per seat! if you want 4 seats, it’s $1000.00 NON REFUNDABLE.

rM teM December 19, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Matt, can you interview someone at ticketing and find out why the team feels it can treat their fan’s this way???

NYCESQ December 19, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Long Island Mets fan,

I feel the Mets will end up with Lowe, with Perez as the alternative. Although, Lowe becomes more and more realistic everyday. I see us adding one more reliever. I probably couldn’t say who, but I am sure we have read his name linked to us already.

Our no.5 will be a veteran. I actually do think they will give Niese a chance to win the job though. As far as LF is concerned, we will not hear anything about an OF-er, until we sign our No.2. Even still, we may go into the season with the platoon, and eventually trading for someone towards the deadline.

Castillo will likely be our second baseman. I actually think we have a better chance of acquiring a catcher via trade, rather than finding a taker on Castillo. Last but not least, we will sign one more person to play the role of utility infielder.

Manny is a long shot, but not an impossibility. The market has not developed for him yet.

twofours44 December 19, 2008 at 3:19 pm

realistically:

1) I think we get Lowe.
2) Neise loses 5th spot to a vet in spring training. Who that is I have no clue but I bet hes been mentioned before.
3) We start Castillo at second until mid june until he gets hurt and loses his job to whoever gets signed as our UTIL guy.
4) I think the bullpen moves are done but would not be surprised to see a lefty like ohman added.
5) Tatis/Murphy platoon in left until mid year when murphy wins the job outright.

longislandmetsfan December 19, 2008 at 2:54 pm

nice answer…i actually feel pretty similar….just wanted to hear some other realistic views, instead of the usual fantasy, such as, “I want Manny, AND Tex, AND Lowe, AND Ollie, AND Hudson” etc…you get my drift…

CaseStreet December 19, 2008 at 2:59 pm

The Mets have most of those, on my season of MLB2K7 that I’m playing right now.

NYCESQ December 19, 2008 at 3:02 pm

I definitely get your drift. The worst part is the wait. However, I am confident they will have a solid team on the field.

NYCESQ December 19, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Also, I’d like to add that the Juan Rivera signing only opens things up for the Mets, with respect to Manny.

Knock it all you want, but the last time Omar answered a question re Manny, he responded by saying, “He is a great player, but we are focusing on our starting rotation.” It’s similar to him reacting to Castillo. Of course he is going to say he is going to be our starting 2nd baseman. However, if another team did decide to take him, how would he NOT trade him.

He has to be careful with what he says. He wouldn’t want to disgruntle any player, prior to solidifying a certain position. As some mentioned, if a team did approach the Mets re Delgado, and they felt they were getting something of significance, why wouldn’t they pull the trigger? I think we can take Omar’s “public words,” as a grain of salt.

longislandmetsfan December 19, 2008 at 3:05 pm

another very good point there.

seth1280 December 19, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Someone remind me why the Mets are not in the Peavy derby. He would be a great compliment to our staff.

twofours44 December 19, 2008 at 3:22 pm

because he would cost neise, fmart and another plus prospect

twofours44 December 19, 2008 at 3:23 pm

oh taht and he hates ny

longislandmetsfan December 19, 2008 at 3:31 pm

yeah..he will cost us way too much in the form of prospects..

drewblood January 7, 2009 at 1:23 pm

for some reason i want a hot dog.
