By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 21, 2008 8:42 am

The Nationals signed free-agent RHP Daniel Cabrera to a one-year, $2.6 million deal, according to the Baltimore Sun.

“The Nationals beat out the Mets and Pirates for Cabrera’s services,” reports MLB.com, citing ‘one source.’

Last week, MLB.com said 11 teams had initially shown interest in Cabrera, who other teams were waiting to see him pitch in the Dominican Winter League.

my guess is that the Mets and other teams were unwilling to guarantee cabrera a roster spot, and were offering a minor-league contract, while the Nationals gave more

He’s horrible. Can’t wait to light him up.

Good. This guy has no talent. He’s a chucker not a pitcher. You can see it in the picture above!!

    • The Slider says:

Except that the guy throws something like 98 mph with a hard biting curve ball, if I’m not mistaken. Sounds like he may be a project, but one with a very high ceiling if you can harness his talent. Yes?

      • Gina says:

He doesn’t any more. He lost insane velocity on all his pitches. He couldn’t even touch 95 last year. No one really knows why. His k rates have been plummeting.

Like really between 05 and now he lost 4-6 mph on ALL his pitches. It’s crazy.

In other words, like Victor Zambrano and Oliver Perez?

You want to go through that again?

I actually would have liked to see the Mets land him and use him as a #5. He is somewhat similar to Ollie in the sense he has shown to be dominant at time, but always seems to have control issues.

Being a veteran fantasy baseball player, Cabrera is always on the list to be a late round breakout candidate.

It’s not a dramatic loss by any sense, but it’s one of those things were you would like to see if a change of scenery maybe helps.

his strikeouts are down and his walks are up…plus reports of his velocity being down…wouldn’t have been a bad option if it came cheap, but obviously the nats are giving him a spot in there rotation, which probably had something to do with it

    Good for us

The really amazing part of this story is that Matt got up at 8:42 a.m. on a Sunday to post. Now that’s dedication.

  9. CitizenSnips says:

Sweet. Let’s hope he doesn’t plunk anyone on the hand like he did Jeter last year. This guys control is awful.

  10. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

he has alot of potential but has never reached it. although im sure he will dominate us.
