Whaaaaa...I don't understand, if 1st base is so easy to fill, why we've had a parade of total pretenders play the position. When was the last time the Mets signed a foundational superstar in his twenties who could field his position?? When?? I hate to say it, THIS IS VLAD ALL OVER AGAIN. We get what we deserve.

Free agency for better players is a gamble no matter what b/c player has leverage to demand years or money ... should Mets sit out all high end FA ? is 3 years to Manny or 4 years to Lowe acceptable gamble? i think that Teixeira at 8 years is better gamble than either of those

So you mean we still have a shot? Great News!

Here's how it's gonna go down:

Yanks announce Manny today.
Then there'll be rumors that the Mets are interested in Tex and have offered the same as the Nats.
And Bam, Omar and Jeff are announcing they just signed their newest franchise player, Mark Teixeira!

I think you have something wrong in there cause Tex is mentioned twice.

The Difference is you are getting a complete player. Who has a History in the league. He's a Lifetime .290 hitter with a .378 OBP.

He is indeed a Great 1st baseman. No he isn't Albert Pujols, but he's better then Howard.

If your giving out 8 year contracts you give them to someone like this. Giambi was a dumb contract because he wasn't a good fielder, and if his power left he wasn't a very good hitter. Teixeria hits for a 300+ average most seasons. He hits both Lefties and Righties the same.

In 4 or 5 years into this contract this might look like a steal. Kind of like how paying Beltran to be the Most Productive CFer in baseball at 18 mil a year is.

Both Tex and Giambi produced at a much higher level then Tex before they got their big deals.

The problem isn't giving out contracts like that, it's being unwilling to eat those contracts with 1 or 2 year's left and considering them sunk cost. & ignoring fairly accurate projection systems that predict players declines.

Also wouldn't Johan only have 1-2 years left at 34?
