The Top 4: Mets-Related Links of the Day
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 22, 2008 8:24 am

In a report for Newsday, Ken Davidoff explains how Omar Minaya is learning from his past mistakes.

Davidoff points out Minaya’s new view on age; building a bullpen; and being patient in the market place.

…i like it, but let’s wait and see how the total off-season ends up…because, as much as i want to, it’s difficult to shake the memory of Moises Alou and Orlando Hernandez, who, by the way, are still floating around as free agents

Bill Price of the Daily News gives the Mets some advice with regards to free-agent Oliver Perez: tell him to ‘get lost.

i am sure Scott Boras will appreciate that…you know, the same Scott Boras who represents Derek Lowe…

Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors takes a look at which remaining free-agents will cost a draft pick if signed by a new team, such as Derek Lowe, Orlando Hudson and Oliver Perez.

i will say, i have heard more and more about draft picks this off-season from people connected to the Mets, than any other off-season…and it’s about time…this is not to say draft picks should rule the agenda, but at least they’re being mindful

Joe McDonald of The NY Mets Report posts Jerry Manuel’s Q&A with reporters from last week’s press conferences.

Tell Oliver to get lost lol

well good morning sleepy head. i agree with the opez post. matt, why do you not see the importance of the mets finally replacing piazza with a legit CLUTCH CLEANUP RIGHTY SLUGGER? signing manny should be a no brainer for omar.

    • stickguy says:

That’s why I am so surprised the Dodgers let him go after he carried them to a WS title.

oh wait, that was the Phils…

      never mind.

Still not sure why you are so fixated on 1 hitter (and position on the field). the 2008 team was pelnty good enough to go to the WS if they had an even barely adequate BP, especially during September. And that was even with 1/2 of the team hurt, and having “shlubs” in LF.

I also am having trouble understanding the logic that if you put better players at a position (even if they aren’t MANNY!!!), the team does not improve?

Oh well, I guess I will understand all these complicated issues come October when I am watching the Pirates and Royals in the WS.

      • nostradamus says:

the mets need a legit cleanup hitter, who will make all the others better by justbeing in the lineup, e.g. miss beltran. watch and learn bro.

      • Nordberg says:

        Stickguy,

I agree with you 110%. Too many bozo’s on here think we need to do something drastic to the offense when in reality fixing the bullpen and rotation should be where the majority of money should be spent. If we would have blown half as many saves last year we would have won the division by 10 games!! YOU HEAR THAT EVERYONE…PITCHING!!! Enough of this We need Tex and Manny rah rah garbage.

  3. FSMetFan says:

this is all boring…come january things gotta get moving

  4. Les_Gomez says:

if the angels are off Tex, Omar has to see what they’ll give him for Delgado and then SIGN TEX. after that, re-sign Pedro and look in to Brad Penny. Tex gives us the clean-up hitter and defensive 1B we need

    • nostradamus says:

tex would be the only other choice other than manny for run at the ws. but tex is no cleanup hitter like manny bro.

      • Les_Gomez says:

not for 2009, i agree, but Tex is .300/.400/.500 and gold glove defense at 1B. i’ll take that over hoping manny keeps his head on straight and doesn’t kill us in LF

    • stickguy says:

You should have stopped at sign Tex.

Penny is interesting, but will he even be able to start the season? Great idea on an incentive type deal and ope it works out though.

And pedro just needs to move on.

  5. If the Angels are out on Tex, and Boston wants to play games. Omar has to at least kick the tires on him (i he hasn’t already).

    • Les_Gomez says:

i agree 100%. you can’t let one year of delgado stop you from adding what could be a key long-term player

      • FSMetFan says:

i don’t disagree but just speaking in terms of the mets thinking I don’t think they want any party in giving ANOTHER player 23 million a year

    • Dirtysanchez says:

lol you beat me too it carlos….we should at least see whats going on. Im sure tex would much rather come to us than the nats

  6. stickguy says:

Yeah, Tex is certainly expensive. And of course no one is “worth” that much money.

But putting the economics of MLB aside (or just accepting them), Tex, combined with a few other key moves, can really set this team up nicely for 2009, and especially for 2010+ when CD is (hopefully) gone.

sign Tex, and move Delgado to fill some other hole, and go from there.

    • Les_Gomez says:

definitely. if your offensive core is Reyes-Wright-Tex-Beltran, you can fill in average players at the positions and still be in good shape. that will allow omar to concentrate on pitching.

  7. nostradamus says:

the offense will NOT fire on all cylinders until omar acquires a legit CLUTCH righty cleanup hitter. the only ones available are manny and tex. it is ridiculous that we havent had one since piazza!

  8. 4JoeOrsulak says:

Bill Price is a silly, silly man. Oliver Perez’s problems are 5% headcase issues, 65% control problems, and 30% mediocre changeup.

  9. enut says:

    hey Ollie ‘Get Lost’!

  10. Cactus says:

Your knock on Bill Price is unwarranted.

If the Mets offer the most money for Derek Lowe, you can say whatever you want to Oliver Perez.

We all know Boras clients almost always end up with the highest bidder regardless of anything else.
