Starting Pitcher: Nothing Imminent with Lowe
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 26, 2008 8:51 am

Kat O’Brien of Newsday talked with Mets GM Omar Minaya and reports that, while he is in talks with Scott Boras, who represents Derek Lowe and Scott Boras, nothing is imminent.

On Wednesday, the Boston Globe said the Mets appeared to be closing in on deal for Lowe, worth either three– or four-years and for worth roughly $14-16 million per season.

…well, these days, imminent and closing in are rather subjective in baseballfrom what i can tell, neither of the above reports are false…i bet things pick up next week, prior to new years…i hope

Speaking of pitchers…

Relief pitcher Joe Nelson signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Rays, according to the Miami Herald.

Also, to paraphrase Omar from Newsday this morning he emphasized that nothing was going to happen with “go relax and enjoy the holiday’s”.

Of course this was on the heals of waking up and hearing K-Rod is getting ready to play…winter ball? But, the Met’s will have someone there to watch him. Oh that’s just great. Now I can relax.

And Sosa’s looking to make a return to MLB, hmm another 41 year old outfielder in our future. God, I hope not. Omar, don’t even think it please.

I’ll wait patiently and try to relax and wait to see how the offseason plan unfolds, since the bullpens off to a good start, but just get the rotation addressed already before our first options move on and we’re left with Redding as our first option instead of our compete for the 5th spot option.

i would give Sammy Sosa a minor league deal…

      • Hazmet says:

That I agree with, even though it would raise eyebrows. See if he’s got anything left and if he does we get some organizational depth going for us much like Tatis gave us last year.

all i’d ask is that we all take the “source” with a grain of salt. the BOSTON globe is a red sox paper and who is our biggest competitor for lowe? the red sox.

  4. GravediggerHebner says:

I guess for those who considered adding Jose Guillen, Sammy Sosa would be a less costly version on pretty much every level.

  5. tonym says:

The Yanks are or Boston will swoop in and take Lowe – just you watch.

    • Sylar says:

      Doubtful.

The Yankees can’t even afford to give Pettite $10 million, what makes you think they’ll give Lowe $18 million?

As for the Red Sox, I really don’t think they much have interest.

Lowe will be a Met, but it’ll take time…

  6. letsclonesantana says:

    scott boras represents scott baras?

  7. bobabouy01 says:

Just read that the Yanks will look to move 2 players from the group of Nady, Swisher and Matsui…..I know they don’t normally deal with the Mets, but Nady or Swisher would be decent options…either one could step in next year at 1B if Murphy proves to be a “flash in the pan”…..wonder what it would take to get them ?

  8. sellitman says:

I’d rather go after Pettit than Lowe.

  9. Mags.328 says:

My 2 biggest concerns with Lowe are that we don’t know how far Omar is willing to go, nor do we know where Lowe wants to play. Given that Boras is his agent, and that we have no idea where Lowe wants to play – we haven’t heard word one about Lowe’s feelings towards playing for the Mets, yet we know he likes the Sox- it worries me that if the Sox do get into the bidding, Omar will only go so far. But it shouldn’t be that way. Omar should’t look at Ollie, or worse, Wolf, as viable backup plans. There’s a big dropoff after Lowe, and I pray that Omar feels the same way, even though we keep hearing about how, even though he prefers Lowe, he would be fine with either of the other two. I truly hope that’s just a ploy, same as with K-Rod. Fortunately with K-Rod, he really wanted to play for the Mets and he took the money right away, and so we never got to see what would happen if Omar had to keep bidding on him, not to mention it was clear the Mets were the biggest market team in need of a closer, scaring off other teams from even trying. And we can also thank God that Boras wasn’t K-Rod’s agent, otherwise, who knows how it would have gone down. In Lowe’s case, however, there are more ifs involved, more variables.

In the end, I can see the Sox bidding for Lowe, but only going so high, since he’s not a priority. They will probably just check in to see if he can be had. So, it would come down to whether Omar is willing to outbid whatever the Sox puts out there, or, and this also concerns me, where Lowe would rather play. In the end, he just simply may want to play with the Sox again. We’ll see.
