Starting Pitcher: Limited Suitors for Lowe
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 28, 2008 9:49 am

Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes the Cardinals, Brewers, Dodgers and Braves are no longer in the market for Derek Lowe or Oliver Perez.

Olney adds, “So the Mets can sit back and pluck the best of the starting pitchers, at their price… Heck, the Mets might find themselves in a position to take advantage of a two-for-one sale.”

According to the New York Post, “It seems clear the Mets want to get the situation resolved by New Year’s or shortly thereafter so they can begin filling in other cracks.”

Speaking of starting pitchers…

The Padres are no longer working to trade Jake Peavy, though they continue to listen to offers, reports the Union Tribune.

Lastly, the Giants and free-agent LHP Randy Johnson agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal, according to the Associated Press.

As such, reporter Chris Haft of MLB.com believes the Giants may now listen to offers for LHP Jonathan Sanchez, who will cost a young, major-league hitter who is not eligible to be a free agent until after 2009.

Sanchez, 26, is 13–18 with a 5.18 ERA in 89 games in his career.

Man getting Lowe and Perez would be unbelivable.

  2. huge_mets_fan11 says:

It also says in the Olney article that the Mets are still trying to trade Castillo which is a good sign.

  3. VCarver says:

If Sabean were Mets GM I’d tear my hair out. The last thing the Giants need to do is bring in an old faded starter like Johnson.

Hopefully the market comes down for Lowe. I agree with Omar taking a patient approach to him and Ollie — even if it means losing their top choices and having to settle for someone like Wolf.

    • Chris Alvino says:

Why is the Randy Johnson moves a bad one? Should Sabean bring in Ollie to a LT deal and risk having him and Zito kill their team? The RJ move was a great move for them. It provides stability to the rotation and a veteran presence.

  4. How awesome would it be to have Lowe and Ollie? That’s a championship rotation:

    Santana
    Lowe
    Pelfrey
    Maine
    Perez

As for Sanchez, I know I would love to go after that kid…he was really impressive when he pitched against us last year @ SF. Young lefty who throws hard and strikes a lot of batters out (very similar to Perez, just younger), I’m curious to know what else he would cost. I wonder if the Giants would take Nick Evans +1 for him? Hey, I can dream right?

    • christian warrior says:

Slow down there, kid. Championship rotation? I love the first two, and I have big expectations for your #3. But after that there are question marks. You never know which Perez is gonna show up on any given day, and how will Maine come back from injury?

You just can’t say that it is a championship rotation at this point.

      • First of all, who are you calling kid? You know, if you are going to be responding to people on these boards you might not want to sound so demeaning or else nobody will take you too seriously.

Secondly, I did not say “we will win a championship,” I said that is a “championship rotation,” by which I meant that it puts us in position to win the NL East in 2009. However, I am fully aware of the fact that the games must still be played on the field.

However, which would you rather have?

        Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Unknown, Niese
        or
        Santana, Lowe, Pelfrey, Maine, Perez

Those are 5 SP with experience (minus Pelf) in almost any situation…best in the NL East hands down.

      • SadClownGoodMets says:

To state the obvious: A championship rotation is one that is good enough to get a team into the playoffs and (more importantly) good enough to win in the playoffs.

        1. We don’t need 5 starters in the playoffs.
        2. Yes, Ollie’s performances can be hit or miss, but don’t think about it in absolute terms – compare him to other #4 starters.
        3. Yes, Maine must prove that he can come back from injury … but he’s also the #5 pitcher. If he puts up stats a little worse than his ‘06 and ‘07 seasons, that’s still a solid #5.

        That’s why it’s a championship-caliber rotation.

        • mark5674 says:

Maine is a number 5 starter? is this serious? on almost any other team he would be an ace or a number 2.. believe me, hes pitching in the 2nd spot if we dont get lowe, and the 3rd spot if we do just because of lowes experience. dont doubt the maine man

      • JimmyD says:

No way, if Ollie was slotted as the fifth starter, he’s gotta be the best #5 in the league…

    • Nate W. says:

      Nick Evans +1? lol!

slow down there kid indeed! ;)

How about Ryan Church once he proves himself to be healthy in ST. That would be realistic.

Niese or Murphy would be a good place to start an offer as well.

  5. Joe D says:

I wrote about getting Lowe and Perez on Christmas Day. Here is a direct quote.

I believe that the the Yankees signing of Mark Teixeira may put some added pressure on Omar Minaya to deliver more than he originally intended.

It may not be far fetched to believe that the Mets may sign Derek Lowe AND Oliver Perez.

If that is indeed the case, it would cure many anxieties going into the 2009 season. One could argue that a rotation of Johan Santana, Derek Lowe, Oliver Perez, John Maine and Mike Pelfrey, would be the best in the NL.

Here’s to seeing it come to fruition.

    Enjoy the day!

  6. MadCowMets says:

Lowe and Perez would be nice – lets the rooks work it out in AAA.

  7. Philnym31 says:

If Lowe’s market is as poor as stated, you have to wonder how this translates over for Ben Sheets. The only team I have heard rumored with Sheets is the Texas Rangers and they are not even enamored about spending. The starting pitching market looks like it has taken quite a fall. I think we are all going to surprised when everything is all said and done. There’s going to many great bargains propping up.

  8. Jmiles says:

The economy was bound to catch up to baseball. In any business you have the elite that people will pay for but then it’s everybody else who has to look in different directions.
The Mets might actually come into Spring training looking really good as they may prove patience is a virtue
There was a good article in The Post about the money the Yankees actually make. All is not what it seems

  9. longislandmetsfan says:

I’ve been anti-Ollie lately, but that’s only because I was under the impression that it would be him, OR lowe…but, lord if we wound up with both, that would be very good…It would probably totally kill any hope of us getting manny, which I think is highly unlikely anyway, so I would be cool with that…
And the point on sheets is a very good one, although I think the mets would be the last team to look at him..They’ve been burned too many times by injury prone players and I haven’t heard them mentioned once with him..

  10. dave27 says:

Lowe and Ollie shouldn’t be ‘unbelievable’ – it’s a one-spot upgrade over last year’s rotation. I don’t think it’s outrageous for the Mets to push for this – and you will have this ortation locked up across the board for 3-4 years (not sure when Maine hits free-agency).

I’d love to see this get done – open the checkbook on this one! Lowe would only cost a 2nd round pick (since we signed KRod) and obv Ollie costs nothing.

    • Nate W. says:

Ollie costs the two draft picks they they dont get for letting him sign elsewhere…

Just for perspective, if the Mets sign both their first draft pick would be in the third round. Unless they sign Ohman or Hudson.

I can’t see the cost for those two falling far enough for the Mets to sign both, without other teams getting involved and bumping the price back up.

  11. longislandmetsfan says:

I agree, I think this would be huge…and I like the 50-50 chance that they gave us on dumping Castillo…If we do get stuck with him, I obviously am hoping for at least a LITTLE return to form, but I just don’t feel comfortable with him…I feel less comfortable with him than I do about left field…

  12. wallybackman says:

who could we give for sanchez? (the 2006 USA Today Organizational Player of Year is one of SF’s prized young arms and was tabbed as 2nd-best prospect in Giants chain prior to 2007 by Baseball America.)

    how about Evans? Reed? Murphy?

  13. oleosmirf says:

i certainly dont want Ollie back

the guy has no command of his pitches and sure once a month he’ll pitch a gem but then twice a month he’ll have to be taken out in the 3rd inning.

that said if they resign him in addition to Lowe i certainly wouldnt complain…

    • longislandmetsfan says:

My thoughts exactly…If he comes in with lowe, and lets just say pelf is the #3, and ollie/maine are 4/5, with Niese continuing to work on his stuff and be a potential #6…I would be quite comfortable with that setup.

  14. longislandmetsfan says:

and everyone who keeps going on about maine rebounding from surgery, you do understand that he had very MINOR surgery, right? It is not like the guy had major work done, and he should be 100%.

  15. Chris Alvino says:

The Giants will not deal Sanchez for a prospect. They were brutal last year. They need major league talent. Look for Sanchez to net either an of, 3b, or 1b.

Would a Castillo / Schneider for Molina work if we paid half of Castillo’s contract? I am not sure why, but Molina’s name is always in trade rumors. They need a 2b and a guy that can bat lead-off. If they trade Molina, they will need another catcher.

    • oleosmirf says:

i would make that move in a heartbeat…

    • Nate W. says:

Church, Castillo, and Schnieder for Sanchez and Molina.

The Mets would need to sign an OF, like Abreu to replace Church. But they wouldnt really need Lowe. They could sign Abreu, Hudson, Redding, and Ohman with the same money they would need to sign Lowe and Perez.

  16. therealsince86 says:

Now that the Giants signed Randy they are looking to comopete in a weak division they may be able to. They won’t be trading Molina now.
However, I would trade Murphy or Church for Sanchez and not worry with Ollie. That would free up all the money you would have spent on another SP to spend on an OF. Go get Abreu cheap and start Church/Murphy and Abreu.

    • longislandmetsfan says:

not a bad idea, I just dont know how I feel about abreu…

    • oleosmirf says:

i dont see how that gives us a better chance of making the playoffs

replacing Perez with Sanchez and Church with Abreu does nothing for us.

let’s say the Mets can’t Manny, Xavier Nady or Ty Wigginton is the next best option.

both players are RH and a lock for .270 20 HR

Reyes, Murphy, Beltran, Wright, Delgado, Wigginton, Church, Catcher is a very capable lineup

      • Nate W. says:

Were Ollie and Church the problem last year? They dont need to be upgraded, just suitable replacements on a more consistent basis.

Abreu will get his numbers, Church may be on the DL. And no one can possibly be more inconsistent than Perez. Add that to a much improves bullpen and you have a 90+ win team.

If they could manage to wrangled Molina for Castillo it should make them the favorites.

      • therealsince86 says:

While I agree on Wiggington we don’t have the money to do all of that.
We are not going to sign Lowe, Perez and Wiggington.
However, with my plan, Lowe, Abreu and Sanchez we do have the money for.
Besides as much as I love Church, Abreu is a very good consistant hitter. He is an upgrade over Church. You say that Wiggington and Nady are guarnteed .280 20 but neither have done that consistantly. However, Abreu has.

  17. Krodamet says:

abreu cant really field citi field is big he cant cover and omar already has it set
    tatis/murphy

    heres are main priority
    2nd and pitching

  18. Krodamet says:

get lowe we r the only contenders the red soxs got penny there happy, now what about us!
