Note: Minaya may ask Johan to skip WBC
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 29, 2008 5:49 am

Last week, Ben Shpigel of the New York Times said the Mets could ask Johan Santana to sit out of the World Baseball Classic.

“He should be O.K., but we’re going to be conservative,” Omar Minaya told Shpigel. “If we have a little bit of doubt or concern, we’d rather have him not play.  We’re pro-Classic, but we always have to be mindful and protective of our players.”

Santana underwent surgery in October to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.  In December, he told reporters he will be ready for spring training.

Would you ask Santana to sit out of the WBC?

    Overwhelming. Hope Johan complies…

We all know Johan could beat Hugo Chavez in an election now and cause peace between our nations. But for all the $$$$$$$$$ we invested , it would be in his and Frankie Rodriquez ineterest for both not to compete

    pitch in Oct
    not March

If he was 100% healthy and did not undergo knee surgery, i would support his participating, but because he is rehabbing an injury, it is best to keep him with the team. I know that David Wright is the only Met to definitely commit to playing in the WBC, i am concerned about his energy level and potential injury but he is very durable and can tolerate almost anything in a stoic manner.

    The WBC

    • Metfreak says:

The WBC is a waste and the last thing teams needs if anyone of the top players gets hurt

      • MetsUpstate says:

Don’t get me wrong but you cannot claim that “The WBC is a waste” w/o checking with the non-US baseball fans first. Of course, for the US fans, WBC is a waste. You can see the same players playing 162 games a year for your own team. You grew up watching the Mets and MLB = baseball for you. Sure you do not care about WBC This however, might not the viewpoint of an average Venezuelan/Dominican/Mexican baseball fan. Sure, they cheer for their players in MLB… while dreaming of seeing all their stars playing together for the country. It can mean world to them.

Disclaimer: I actually do not come from a Latin American country and do not know anything about baseball fans there. However, I do come from a small hockey country in Central Europe and know exactly how it feels to observe 10 NHL stars missing two Olympics in a row b/c of NHL not being willing to pause its regular season for a couple of additional days.

Actually your opinions are a waste. Trying to make baseball a world wide sport is a GOOD thing. Only a less that smart person would think otherwise.

Given the makeup of most MLB rosters, isn’t it ALREADY a worldwide game?

Will Comrade Chavez pay the Mets back if Johan and/or K-rod get injured in the WBC?

The upside to Johan pitching in the WBC is that he’s going up against the World’s best players, so that is better then pitching simulated games in spring training. Not to mention this isn’t the 80’s where the players come to spring training to get in shape, these players are always in good shape as professional athletes, so really the only thing spring training is good for is to get the rust off and so is probably the first 2 to 3 months of the season. Carlos Delgado anyone? Mr. late June through the end of the season.

I can name one manager who isn’t scared to bad mouth anyone. Ozzie Guillen of the Chicago White Sox.

I wonder what the 9% of people against Manny, feel about a Tatis/Murphy platoon? I see people on here wanting a guy like Dunn. Who bats left-handed, strikeouts a TON and played in hitters parks. Not to mention he is supposedly bad with RISP. But you’re against Manny because personality wise you think he’ll be a risk? I doubt you’ll care about his Personality when the team is WINNING!!

    • bkfitz says:

Dunn strikes out a lot but he also walks a lot. Dunn may have played in hitters’ parks but his home runs are not cheap like Victorino’s.

Hitting with RISP is impossible to predict in players. Some years they do it and others they don’t.

Dunn would take a much, much more reasonable deal than Manny.

  8. Moses Magnum says:

hmm thats weird. I was posting under the Manny topic, but it ends up under Johan

  9. mr_met says:

what’s the point of venezuela competing without johan and frankie

  10. bkfitz says:

I recall Gary saying during a broadcast that a lot of the Venezuelan players were unhappy with how they were treated by the officials for the team in the WBC and were considering not playing again because of it.

  11. Gina says:

Meh i can understand why we don’t want him too but I couldn’t blame him for wanting to play for his country. Personally if I was in his situation I don’t think I could turn it down.

  12. metsomniac says:

pitchers in the WBC are protected from manager abuse with pitch counts. if Johan feels he can play, let him play

  13. casey s. says:

coming off of surgery it’s absolutely STUPID for johan to be allowed to pitch in the WBC.
