Outfield: Dodgers contact Adam Dunn
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 29, 2008 3:51 pm

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com says the Dodgers have been in contact with free-agent OF Adam Dunn, who has also drawn interest from the Cubs, Nationals, Mariners and Orioles.

According to Stark, “The Cubs had believed to be Dunn’s top choice before the Dodgers entered the mix.”

…this is interesting…because, if the Dodgers end up with dunn, what happens to the market for Manny Ramirez, since, as of now, the Dodgers seem to be manny’s only suitor…

…again, like i said this morning, if the market for manny crashes, and he’s open to a one-year deal, i don’t know how the Mets will justify ignoring him…

Sell the team Fred- we’re all sick of it.

    • Sylar says:

Give it a rest. No one cares that you want the team to be sold. Your posts are unoriginal, bland, rehashed, and most of all, illogical.

  2. chasmets says:

    Go GET HIM OMAR!!!!!!!

  3. wadehead9 says:

    1. Sign Sheets and Lowe!

    2. Let Ollie do what he does best (walk).

    3. Shore up the bench.

    4. Sign Manny at the end of the day if (and only if) all the stars align.

Save $ and prospects for July ‘09

  4. Snort-It-Like-Keith says:

I am one of those fans who wants Manny but at the same time I realize and understand why ownership would not want to bring him in. But if it does come down to being able to get Manny for one year … the Mets ownership not Omar (since we all no Omar wants Manny) would be ridicules not to get on the phone and start talking about getting him here.

  5. Metfreak says:

That would be sweet but maybe the Dodgers are just playing around to bring Manny price down since all the big market team don’t want hi

  6. Eggman says:

Only if the stars align, as you say.

One year only! No options for 2 years. There is nothing more disgusting than an unmotivated Manny. Bottom line is if no one else wants him, which seems to be the case, he will accept whatever the Mets throw at him.

That being said I will not cheer for him when he gets the big HR, I will cheer for the team.

    • oleosmirf says:

Manny “not trying” hit .299 20 HR 68 RBI in 365 AB (thats on pace for 31 HR 111 RBI)

so he’s basically just as good as David Wright “without trying”, now imagine if he “tried” as a met

  7. Philnym31 says:

Manny and Lowe, I don’t know how else to put it.

  8. brapp says:

If the dodgers sign dunn I can see the giants making a big play for manny. If anyone can handle manny it’s a team that delt with bonds all those years.

  9. krod9 says:

    Sheets+Niese>>>Ollie.

  10. oleosmirf says:

The Mets will justify not signing Manny by telling us how good Murphy and Tatis are and that Castillo is commited to having a great year.

They will also say how they got Lowe (the 3rd best SP on market), K-Rod (the best closer available) and traded for Putz to be the best 8th inning guy in baseball.

While those are all great moves, that is not enough to get this team to where it needs to be.

You cant go into the season with 5.5 capable hitters (Reyes, Beltran, Wright, Delgado, Church, Murphy being the half) and expect to go far

    • metsftw says:

huh? the phillies had 5, maybe 6 “capable” hitters in their lineup and won the WS. we are not going to have 8 all-stars in the lineup, get over it.

  11. nostradamus says:

manny + lowe + world series. then even slappy castillo could be tolerated in the lineup.

  12. Gina says:

I don’t understand why we don’t have interest in Dunn. They don’t want Manny because of age/crazy but then what’s their reasoning for not wanting Dunn?

    • oleosmirf says:

b/c Dunn is possibly the last person you would want up with the game on the line…

    • its hard to be a met fan says:

I always thought Dunn would be a good signing…especially looking beyond 2009 when Delgado leaves…now more than ever, since his value is obviously low…I heard he doesn’t give it his all

    • Wanny Backstra says:

Could be that he makes Manny look like Willie Mays Hayes in the outfield.

But I think part of it is also that they are hung up on the lefty/righty thing and want to add a right handed hitter, which to me is ridiculous reasoning because good hitters hit, period.

And if too many lefties somehow causes a problem, Church can sit against tough left handed pitchers in favor of Tatis.

  13. Sylar says:

Manny does not guarantee this team a WS….

    • nostradamus says:

no, but it GREATLY increases the mets’ odds

    • oleosmirf says:

no but he does guarantee us a postseason appearence

      • Sylar says:

        No, he doesn’t.

Manny isn’t this supernatural godlike figure you all portray him to be. He’s a great, great player, but we aren’t doomed if we don’t get him.

        • oleosmirf says:

are we doomed no, but what happens when Tatis and Murphy come back down to earth and Manny is among the top hitters in baseball,

      • gameball says:

Forgotten in all this is that the Mets tied for second in the league in runs scored. It was not the lineup that kept them from the postseason.

I would just as soon see the team take a slower, more long-term approach to bolstering the offense, rather than committing to Manny Ramirez for the next two-three years.

        • oleosmirf says:

but when the season was on the line the offense stalled as it did the year before

i mean nick evans was our 5 hitter in game 162 last season. nick evans doesnt even belong in the big leagues let alone the #5 hitter on a playoff team

  14. Knuckler says:

I don’t get it either. He mashed in Cincy. In this line-up his numbers would only get better.
i guess cause he’s a bad fielder and lefty, maybe? Dunno.

  15. mistermet says:

    Sylar moron,

Tell me what I’ve said that’s illogical.

It’s very simple, really. We’re all paying more for tickets, etc., as fans- and with a new stadium, new network, 20 million in naming rights, etc….. well, based on that, there is no reason they payroll shouldn’t be increased by 20-30 million. Don’t see how anyone can disagree.

    • Tidewater says:

It’s illogical because Wilpon isn’t considering selling.

      • Ho, Ho, Ho says:

The only way that may come about is if the Wilponzi’s loss in the Madoff Ponzi scheme is much more than $300 million and the club is sold to raise capital.

  16. wadehead9 says:

For all you Fantasy GMs out there.

Daniel Murphy/Ryan Church and John Maine

    for

    “Horse Face” Aaron Harang

    Who says no?

    • stickguy says:

      anyone with commom sense?

Maine is at least equal to Harang, and has the advantage of being younger and cheaper.

      • its hard to be a met fan says:

When Maine pitches 200 innings, then we can start the comparison…until then he is no better than a 4th starter…Harang is a legit 2

      • guierllNO MOta says:

Maine has one good half a season, Harang was an allstar before this year….NOT even, but that WFAN trade proposal is still stupid.

I love how everyone CRIES everytime someone brings up a player we could get in exchange for Castillo…NO WE DONT WANT THEM….guess what if the mets wanna trade castillo they have to take back someone else’s garbage…or in other words the FAN castillo for Pujols type rumors aren’t actually realistic!!!!!!!

    • its hard to be a met fan says:

      The Reds say no

    • Wanny Backstra says:

Harang has shown signs of injury. His numbers slipped badly last season.

Maine’s injury does not appear serious.

However, if this is for a fantasy team (as opposed to the Mets) and Harang is healthy, you make the trade to get Harang.

    • wadehead9 says:

      Mets fans overrate Maine.

Here are the average numbers the past three seasons.

      2006-2008

      Maine:
      IP: 140.3
      ERA: 3.93
      WHIP: 1.27
      K/9: 7.97

      Harang:
      IP: 217.0
      ERA: 4.04
      WHIP: 1.26
      K/9: 8.12

You take Harang out of Hitters’ Heaven in Cincinnati, and put him into a Pitcher’s park (i.e. Shea, because these numbers are based on the ballparks during 2006-2008) you will see a distinct drop in Harang’s HR numbers and subsequently WHIP and ERA.

You put Maine in Cincinnati, and he is awful.

Granted Maine makes way less money than Harang, but Harang is a far superior pitcher. Check Harang’s starts last season before Dusty Baker threw him into that long relief role against San Deigo in May and screwed up his regimen.

      • wadehead9 says:

        Forgot to metion:

Maine is 27 and Harang is 30.

      • oleosmirf says:

but why trade Maine and an OF when we can sign Lowe who is better than Harang anyway

        • wadehead9 says:

          Just a totally hypothetical situation.

I’m sick of Manny Ramirez talk, and think we need pitching more anyway.

      • Wanny Backstra says:

Harang is definitely better than Maine. But he definitely had a terrible season after some workhorse years that should serve as a red flag.

  17. zen says:

if it’s a one-year deal the mets have to do it.

    • stilltheEWM says:

They didn’t do it for 3 months when it would of helped us get to the playoffs

      • Wanny Backstra says:

They couldn’t have gotten him because there was no way they could have put someone better than Bay in LF for the BoSox and did not have the young 3B that the Pirates wanted for him (the Mets would have been fine acquiring Bay for themselves!).

  18. stickguy says:

Manny for 1 year, with a chip on his shoulder looking for his next, last contract?

Taht’s the only way I want him on the team!

They can always look to extend him if it works out. if not, let him go (especailly if a young guy looks ready to take over).

Manny for 1 year is perfect for win now/win later.

2009 is “win now” being the last year of the old guys (manny and delgado). 2010 is “win ongoing” with the core in place, and hopefully younger replacements taking over (say, murphy for 1B, or som e sort of FA/trade).

If they lock up the rotation, and the pen is already in place, Manny for ‘09 makes a ton of sense.

    • oleosmirf says:

not to mention that both players would probably be type A’s and if they were to leave thats 2 1st rounders

  19. stilltheEWM says:

they ignored him last year when we needed him.. wouldn’t be surprised at all if they did it again

  20. The Slider says:

I would prefer to see us do something about getting rid of Castillo and signing Hudson to a 3 year deal. Yeah, I’d love Manny in LF, but only after Omar takes care of the starting pitching and 2B.

    • oleosmirf says:

Manny is so much better than Tatis/Murphy compared to the upgrade Hudson would give over Castillo

  21. krod9 says:

“Andruw Jones, coming off a disastrous first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been the subject of trade talks between L.A. and the New York Mets, according to sources.”-ESPN
    Thoughts?
    Me? Heck no, Minaya.

  22. NYCESQ says:

Please God no. Andruw Jones? I would rather keep Castillo.

As far as finishing 2nd in runs, we did that while Delgado had the best year of his career. Tatis and murphy were playing like all-stars. What are the chances that these happen again?

Throw Church into the mix, and do we really know what we are getting out of RF?

    • krod9 says:

Best year of Delgado’s career? Hardly. Look at his stats. His 2000 season alone was better than Ortiz’s 06.

  23. krod9 says:

    Exactly my point.

  24. enterkrod says:

    I WANT MANNY!!!!

  25. enterkrod says:

sign lowe and get manny..dodgers obviously dont want manny anymore..no one wants him…get him now…freaking mets front office…if i was omar i would say screw you guys im getting him

    • SantanaClause says:

okay that makes no sense being as who is going to pay manny then? Omar out of his own pocket? I don’t think so.

  26. casey s. says:

buster is talking andruw jones for the mets….yuck.

  27. bkfitz says:

“and he’s open to a one-year deal, i don’t know how the Mets will justify ignoring him…”

    Are you serious? That’s simple:
    1) He’s a clubhouse cancer
    2) He’s a type A free agent. We already lost our 1st round pick. Signing Lowe we’d lose our 2nd round pick as well. We don’t need to give up any more.
    3) He’d cost at least $20M and we need to shed payroll, not add.
    4) He’s a DH. Manny is a HUGE liability in LF.

    • Philnym31 says:

      1) He’s a winner.
      2) I’ll take a World Series over a draft pick.
      3) Trust me, we have the money.
      4) He’s no worse defensively than Tatis/Murphy, two converted infielders.

    • oleosmirf says:

      1) he’ll be fine on Los Mets
      2) we get a 1st back when Perez walks
      3) why do we need to shed payroll??, we should be adding to it
      4) he’s better defensively than all the other options

  28. Philnym31 says:

Dodgers aren’t even interested in Castillo according to Buster Olney. If anything, the Dodgers would be eating everything of his salary for us to take him on. Either way, I don’t want him.

    • Wanny Backstra says:

If that’s the case (which I find highly unlikely) what is the risk?

There’s nothing but reward if the Mets aren’t paying him — or are only paying a small portion of what he is owed.

They can cut him if he doesn’t at least become a serviceable platoon player or bench player. And the upshot is that a guy motivated to salvage his career can come back and hit 40 home runs.

Omar has a keen eye for this type of player — Easley, Tatis, Valentin, etc.

  29. ulysses says:

Church will be fine. 2 years ago he was fine, he had an injury year last year. you don’t think he will bounce back? I’d feel safe betting on him having a good year in 09.

  30. NYCESQ says:

It is completely and utterly sad to see the Mets linked to A. Jones. I have no words for this. I truly hope this is wrong. The only way that I see some daylight, would be a trade for Church. Have Jones start in right, and STILL sign Manny.

By trade, I mean for a young pitcher to round out the rotation

  31. mr.metlover says:

mlbtraderumors has resurrected the Castillo for Andruw Jones trade…let’s be serious here!

  32. enterkrod says:

they say he will be used for right field..where would they put church in left field?..or trade him?…i like church..that would be stupid..lets just sogm lowe and manny and leave as is..

  33. mr.metlover says:

True. Would hate to see Church go. I have a feeling he can get his momentum back from early last season before the concussion. At least, give him a chance before resorting to such garbage.

  34. Philnym31 says:

The only interest the Mets should have in Andruw Jones is to ask him for his autograph. Even that is pushing it.

  35. Chris Alvino says:

If the Dodgers eat most of his salary, then I am all for Jones in the Met of.

Is he really as bad as he was last year? I cannot believe that. And if the Dodgers eat enough of his deal (I’d say about 90% of it), would it really kill the Mets to bring Jones in here for a shot at redemption? At best we get a good defensive OF who can hit 30 homers. At worst we cut him loose because the Mets will not be bound by his large deal. Sounds like the kind of low risk / high reward deal that Omar is know for making.

This would not necessarily take the Mets out of the Manny sweepstakes either. it would only give them more leverage. Also, if the Mets were to get Manny, they would then have a decent trading chip with Jones because whoever they would trade him to would not have to take on his brutal salary.

  36. SantanaClause says:

Purely defensivly though with Jones in left Beltran in center and church in right NOTHING would touch the ground

  37. Wanny Backstra says:

If LA eats a major portion of his deal or takes Castillo back, what’s the harm in taking a chance on a high upside guy desperate to revive his career? At the very least, he’s a defensive replacement in LF with a better chance to hit a HR late in a game than Jeremy Reed.

He can begin platooning in the corners and maybe take over LF if all goes well.

Plus, he’d be gone after this season, while Castillo would be back for two more.

  38. Kalihan42 says:

Whether we want Manny or not Dunn signing, if he is seriously looking at LA, is going to have an impact on the market for OF’s. Seeing as Minaya is clearly not going to bring an outfielder on board until the rotation is settled leads me to think that we need to get Lowe/ Perez taken care of now before we have no outfield options left.

  39. Ho, Ho, Ho says:

The Mets shun Manny but are linked to A. Jones…..why am I not surprised?

  40. Eggman says:

How about we sign Manny to 1 month contracts at $4 mil per month. The Mets get the option of re-signing him month to month. If he behaves, no problem for his end. He gets his $24 mil and the Mets get protection against his nonsense.

Go ahead, flame away, but it does make sense.

  41. rM teM says:

Why do we keep talking about Manny?
Nobody in their right mind wants him, right?

  42. bob burket says:

WE AS METS FANS NEED TO POUND THE METS WITH EMAILS INSISTING TO GET MANNY SHORT TERM. I HAVE ALREADY CANCELED MY SEASON TICKET FOR 2009. NEW STADIUM OR NOT, MORE FANS SHOULD DO THE SAME. IF MANNY IS AVAILABLE AND OMAR IS NOT ALLOWED TO BRING HIM IN 1-2 YRS, THEN ANOTHER TANK JOB IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN SEPT., 2009. FRED AND JEFF SHOULD LET OMAR BRING IN THE BEST AVAILABLE PLAYER. IF FRED AND JEFF CAN BE DOOPED BY SOME INVESTER, THEY OBVIOUSLY AREN’T SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW A GREAT BALLPLAYER WHEN THEY SEE ONE. G E T M A N N Y!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. MetzFanInTX says:

    I just don’t understand when I look number I don’t see a problem
actually I see Manny being Manny whos been a average 317 not including
his rookie year which still has him at 315 average. Attitude or no
