Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe believes the Mets are the front-runners to sign free-agent RHP Derek Lowe, over the Phillies and Red Sox.
Speaking of starting pitchers…
According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox and free-agent RHP Brad Penny agreed to a one-year deal that could be worth up to $8 million.
Penny joins Josh Beckett, Tim Wakefield, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Jon Lester in Boston’s starting rotation, shifting Justin Masterson back to the bullpen.
…penny’s deal is guaranteed, and for decent money, and so i have to think this means they do not have the same serious interest in lowe as the Mets…which is not to say the Sox will not sign him, but i take this as a good sign for the Mets…
Penny missed the end of last season with a sore right shoulder.
In November, the Los Angeles Times wrote, “Several club officials have questioned the severity of the shoulder problems… and blamed his 6-9 record and 6.27 earned-run average on what they called a poor work ethic.”

sweet, that really doesn’t help boras’ hand or his clients. the mets should be able to get oli or lowe at a reasonable price at this stage. the mets have gotten lucky this offseason

They should be able to sign both Ollie and Lowe. This only cost us a top pick and supplemental. I think most of us would go for that. I
I can’t see Mets -Yankees trade for X-Man. It would have to involve a third team. Just can’t see that one.
No one has talked about Howie Kendrick from the Angels. As a stop gap Murphy goes to first. Delgado, who I don’t want to see traded but his value is at a peak . Kendrick would more than fill the need at 2b . Look at his potential. I realize his MLB stats could be better, but his minor league stats were really good.
I also think Chad Cordero needs to be brought in. If Daner Sanchez can come back fully, with Cordero aboard , we are talking about a 5 inning game for starters, except Johan.
i don’t think murphy has shown himself to have the power you need at 1B
Since when do you need a power hitting 2B?
The Mets won’t have to get into a bidding battle to get Lowe or Ollie so they should sign them both.
With Manny, maybe Omar has not made a move for a LF yet because he is still trying to convince the Wilpons to let him bring Manny in … who knows. I would love him here to play LF. I know his defense is not that great but at the same time a platoon between Murphy and Tatis is not to much better defenseily. But at the same time I do understand why ownership does not want him.
But getting Lowe and Ollie would really give us a strong rotation 1-5 and with the new bullpen, on paper the Mets you can argue have the best pitching in baseball. Of course they have to show it on the field next year.
Very reasonable contract, similar to Randy Johnson. I wonder if Wolf would cost the same.
Penny hasn’t been the same since the 2007 all-star game. He was throwing the ever loving crap outta the ball that night. 97-99 on the gun and struck out the side.
But the sox have his medical records so who knows.

It is a great thing that we want another pitcher who nobody else wants. We are so good at paying them for what they have done and never will do again. That’s why we don’t win. We think yesterday will always be tomorrow.

I’d prefer Lowe and Wolf, because I’d like to have a first round draft pick and a supplemental. Also, IMO, Wolf is just as good as Perez when you take everything into account (reliability, contract, injuries, talent). And this way, you would save some money to spend getting a LF or a 2B.
