Look: Is this a Home Grey Jersey for the Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Dec 30, 2008 3:36 pm

Update, 5:36 PM:

The grey jersey mentioned below is a fashion jersey sold by Majestic, and is not an official team product, as you can see by clicking here – also, the jersey has been on sale since July.

…thanks to the 20 or so people who sent in the above link during the last hour or soit is appreciated

By the way, someone should tell Adam Rubin of the Daily News, since he a post about the grey jersey on his blog as well.

Original Post:

The Sports Authority in Forest Hills, NY, is Img061selling what appears to be an official home jersey for the Mets, in grey, with no black, and an orange and blue stripe along the collar – as you can see in the picture to the right, which was taken and sent to MetsBlog.com by Jothar.

On December 5, here, following a tour of Citi Field, I wrote how I did hear a rumor that the dark, dark grey from the stadium’s interior could eventually replace the modern black in the team’s uniform color scheme – or, could be removing the black altogether.  Perhaps this photo is it, though I am still skeptical this is actually an official jersey.

According to Jothar, ‘The color is skewed brown,’ because he used a Img062cell phone to take the picture.  ‘The original is a lot closer to dark grey, although it does have a brown tone to the grey.’

The letters are pretty busy, too, with a grey shadow, as opposed to black.

If this is the new alternative home jersey, I’m torn.  I’m fine seeing the black disappear, since it strayed from tradition.  However, I always viewed the black as part of a new tradition, from the late-90s, Mike Piazza era, which I enjoyed.

The thing is, grey is not part of the team’s tradition either – though it is part of Citi Field, so I get the connection.

The more I look at it, if worn with white pants, it’ll probably look pretty cool.  I wonder what color hat they’ll wear?

In the end, though, I’m far more concerned with how the team performs, than the clothes on their back.  I mean, I’ll take a World Championship in grey, as opposed to a third-straight collapse in white, you know what I mean.

  2. aaronweil says:

but otherwisee the jeresy looks rly nice

  3. ravi3 says:

Looks eh, but I’d need to see the full jersey to make an opinion.

  4. QnsNative1718 says:

    Love it. Ditch the black.

  5. reillys5 says:

these are pretty cool..i want the mets to have 1 hat and 2 jerseys home and away…none of this 4 different types of jerseys anymore it makes us look foolish

  6. HeadlinerG60 says:

Do want. Love the two-tone striping.

  7. twofours44 says:

i think 3 jerseys is better, they need a royal blue jersey.

  8. ahartmann says:

This makes sense. All Modells stores on Long Island recently had Mets Replica Jerseys on sale for $20 each. The employee who rung me up said it was because they were getting new Mets jerseys.

    • QnsNative1718 says:

That goes for all Modells in the city as well I believe. Saw the add in the Daily News.

    • CaseStreet says:

I bought one for $40 from Modell’s and a few days later they were on sale for $20.

However, carma made it up when my wife got me an authentic pin-stripe Santana Jersey. So Sweet!

  9. QnsNative1718 says:

I dont know bout you guys but I always thought the black jerseys were a little childish. “Look we’re in black, we’re mean! Urrrr!” Or is it just me?

    • ProudMetFan says:

I honestly think the Mets were trying to be gangsta with the black. I’m not a fan of it either.

  10. steadyeddie says:

    Manny looks good in grey….

  11. mgmets5 says:

The striping around the lettering looks weird. as does the piping by the buttons

  12. Dirtysanchez says:

i like the black more than the grey….the grey just doesnt look right imo

  13. roman411 says:

Just tried to look up Forest Hills, NJ…nada!

Forest Hills, NY (Queens) does have a Sports Authority though. I’m considering making a special trip out there tomorrow (during work hours) to take a peek at the jersey.

  14. fongulalou says:

Where is there a Sports Authority in FH,NY?
    b/t/w Pinstripes at home PLEASE!

  15. jothar says:

It’s Forest hills, NY, off Woodhaven Blvd.
My initial impression of no black is wrong- the dropshadow in the white is black. But it’s much more subtle than before.
You walk in and make a right. If someone could bring a real camera to get color-accurate pictures it would be a help.
Sku is 023562813, tag says A6720 FT GT METH. $80 for those with money left.

  16. shea says:

My favorite uniform is the pinstripes. Looks awesome.

  17. fongulalou says:

    Think thats Rego Park. Again,Pinstripes
    Please at Home.

  18. HeadlinerG60 says:

’80s racing stripes need to come back, imo.

  19. ToastyJoe says:

“In the end, though, I’m far more concerned with how the team performs, than the clothes on their back. ”

That’s putting it mildly. If they finally win the division, I don’t care if they’re wearing nothing but pinwheel hats and gold pasties.

  20. helicopter ben johnson says:

Im surprised by teh mostly positive reviews. that looks heinous to me

  21. gipper82475 says:

    Ugh.

    THIS IS NOT COMPLICATED:

    Home: Pinstripes, blue hats

Road: Traditional greys with blue caps.

    THE END!!!

  22. Capital City Goofball says:

Pinstripes and blue caps at home and road greys with the block lettering and blue caps everwhere else. That’s all I want to see.

The black jerseys are Sunday-morning-softball-amateur and the snow whites aren’t much better. Ditch the black caps too.

And enough already with paying subtle tribute to the Dodgers and Brooklyn and bridges everything else that isn’t about THIS team’s tradition.

    Nobody will listen anyway.

  23. fongulalou says:

    Amen! qipper.

  24. The_Fonz says:

I really think i saw them selling those jerseys at Shea last season…are you sure they are planning on wearing those on field and their not just fashion jerseys like those blue ones they sell on mets.com?

Personally i want this uni combo:

    Home: Pinstripes
    Away: Grey NY
Alt home or away: Blue, w/ orange lettering
    All worn with blue cap

  25. mdemaio says:

Has anyone heard anything from the Mets regarding their Shea seat order? I expected at least a note to give an update on status, but I’ve heard nothing…We’re past the 8-12 week mark, and no one has answered emails from the site…

    • steadyeddie says:

I heard that the Wimplons had Bernie Madoff in charge of the seat selling operation…
you could be waitin’ a while….

    • Hernandez_1B says:

i ordered my Shea seats in August and I received them in the beginning of Decemeber. If you ordered them around the time I did, I would call up and see what the deal is.

      • mdemaio says:

Thanks. I ordered mine in September, so maybe they’re processing the orders as received. I’ll give them a call on Monday.

  26. Nightlife says:

I actually kinda like the black road alternates with “New York” on the front, but I dislike the home black alternates (mainly because I think they look awful with white pants). I personally dislike the all white/snow white or whatever you want to call them home unis a bunch. Just stick with the damn pinstripes, its a shame they only wear them about 15 times a year now.

  27. metsrbest says:

The only thing that shocks me about the jersey is that it doesn’t say “Dodgers” lol

  28. baymenxpac says:

this is NOT the new grey jersey. this is a FASHION jersey that MLB licensing sells in all 30 MLB teams. there is a yankees version, that sports their interlocking NY on the left chest, as well as 28 other versions. an unfounded rumor appeared about this on the chriscreamer.com uniform boards two months ago. it is NOT true. and if the grey jerseys ever did look like this, i’d personally kill someone.

    • bkdrew says:

Good call baymenxpac…you beat me to it.

I do always enjoy the uniform discussions/debates, but this is much ado about nothing.

  29. RetireNumber17 says:

My god, can’t those idiots do anything right? That’s an abomination. Surely not even the Wilpons have that little good taste.

  30. bigchart333 says:

how can u people say one way or the other an opinion on that jersey when it is by far the worst picture taken in photography history…could he get any closer with anymore glare on it? Why not just put the camera ON THE JERSEY and take the pic, leaving no space? That cant be any worse than what im looking at

im just in a bad mood today, i want to tear someone’s head off and eat their veins….at least im going to see Dave Attell 2nite at carolines

  31. RetireNumber17 says:

BTW, they need to drop the drop shadows in all combinations, whether this Jackson Pollock-designed fiasco is the real deal or not.

    • steadyeddie says:

      YES, retire #17
      and #31
and let’s look at the 1969 and 1986 rosters
guys don’t play on the same team for 20 years no more.
Let’s get some of OUR (Mets, not Dodgers) heroes on the walls!

  32. mets4life6986 says:

i would also ask that the wilpons STOP COMBINING THE DODGERS CRAP INTO OUR FRANCHISE WE ARE NOT THE DODGERS SO STOP MODELING EVERYTHING AFTER THE DODGERS AND MODEL IT AFTER THE METS!!!!! its bad enough that they are putting jackie robinsons name on everything, so what that he changed things in baseball and the world HE DIDNT PLAY FOR THE METS!!!!

    • The_Fonz says:

its funny you say that too, cause you would think they would drop the black then, becasue the DODGERS NEVER wore BLACK!

BLUE CAPS WILPON, ONLY BLUE CAPS!!! HOW HARD IS THAT?

    • steadyeddie says:

How about the Duffy Dyer Rotunda?

    • seanr says:

I agree mets 4 life . How about the NY Giants and the Polo Grounds, the Metes actually played there!

I wish Wilpon would have bought the damn Dodgers

  33. jothar says:

If this uniform existed elsewhere as a fashion jersey, someone please post a buyable link to it because I don’t see it anywhere. Also, fashion jerseys usually aren’t more complex or expensive to manufacture than the original. The 4 sewn-on colors on the front, plus the added orange border stripe, add to the cost of this one.
If it’s in Rego Park, it’s right at the border of Forest Hills, because this store is just a few blocks from where I used to live, which is Forest Hills.
I took the close-up trying to capture the detail on it. The details help show this wasn’t a photoshop job.

    • The_Fonz says:

I think i saw this at shea stadiums outdoor shop last season, unless it was something very similiar. however, if this is the official alt jersey for next season, id rather see the blacks back.

  34. bkdrew says:

This is nothing more than a fashion jersey… available for every MLB team. Just google “fashion charcoal replica jersey”…

  35. Krodamet says:

    one word “SWEET”

  36. youknowwhatimsayin says:

Also from searching around the internet, only the Nats, Orioles, Twins, Rays, and Red Sox made uniform changes for the 2009 season. If this was official jersey, I would think the Mets would have officially introduced these already.

  37. jothar says:

Traditionalists: Should the blue caps have blue or orange buttons?

Remember- the Mets are a business, not a boy scout troop. Part of their revenue generation model is planned obsolescence for their jerseys. Even your basic pinstriped jersey will be obsolete when they eliminate the dropshadow. If you follow the Mets, be prepared for either wearing an obsolete jersey or buying a new one every couple of years to stay current.
The other approach is simply to create a winning team, which pushes sales without gimmicks.

  38. youknowwhatimsayin says:

And to add, they should wear pinstripes w the blue cap/orange beanie for ALL home games. I am no fan of the snow whites. If an alternate jersey is a must, go with royal blue/orange lettering.

For the road, only road greys.

  39. Krodamet says:

oh i went to modells and the black jerseys were 20 bucks so i asked a guy there why are they so cheap, he said b/c there getting new jerseys.
i just thought they were adding a citi field patch

    • The_Fonz says:

I think thats the reason they’re so cheap…or maybe their just ditching the black jerseys and keeping the other three…i wouldnt mind that actually.

  40. Clarence Beeks says:

I think the Mets would probably unviel the new uniforms (if they exist) during some form of a press conference.

Also, I think I recall it being said that the 2009 jerseys, whether a new style or not, would at least have a patch of the Citi Field logo on it.

  41. Krodamet says:

we have to leave our past behind us start over look new play with talented guys in a new stadium
    it all makes sense

its happy for the fans and players

  42. Krodamet says:

out team our time out new york mets

  43. djstue says:

Whatever it takes to build a Champ. If they want to keep us buying new jerseys every year, so be it.
Look how it’s helped the Islanders . Oops, bad example.

I just can hear the Yankee fans now.

  44. Krodamet says:

    cool

  45. Krodamet says:

they probably want to sign the players they need get that out of the way and introduce the new jerseys if there are new jerseys

  46. djstue says:

I gotta add though, this gray looks atrocious. Padres atrocious.

Anyone find a full shot of the uni?

  47. otterulz says:

Wow. I’m sorry but that is UGLY. I’m not a fan of the black jerseys but that is a million times better than those hideous gray things.

  48. bucknersankles says:

I JUST THREW UP A LITTLE IN MY MOUTH, WHILE I’M AT IT, WHAT’S WITH THOSE PENITENTIARY TYPE SHADES IN CITI FIELD NOT TO MENTION RF WHICH LOOKS LIKE AN INJURY WAITING TO HAPPEN , AND A 45,000 CAPACITY “INCLUDING STANDING ROOM ” YEA THAT’S THE TICKET, SPEND MY $$$ TO STAND AROUND FOR 9 INNINGS AFTER PULLING A 12.
DOES THAT PARTICULAR TICKET COME WITH A VENDOR SHIRT ? I MEAN, COME ON .
DON’T MEAN TO SOUND SOUR, BUT HAS ANYONE SEEN THE NEW YANKEE STADIUM ?
DON’T WANT TO COMPARE APPLES AND ORANGES,BUT IF THAT’S GOING TO BE OUR HOME FOR THE NEXT 40 OR SO YRS I THINK WE COULD HAVE GONE WITH A BETTER SEATING CAPACITY AND A MORE SYMETRICAL OUTFIELD.
I DON’T WANT TO COME OFF AS AN INGRATE, I DO APPRECIATE A NEW HOME FOR OUR TEAM , JUST THOUGHT IT COULD HAVE GONE DOWN A LITTLE BETTER, THAT’S ALL.

  49. lil pelf says:

the white backround on the mets script makes its look bad

  50. lil pelf says:

i want a grey hat with orange NY too, that would be dope

  51. nostradamus says:

the grey is better than the black.

    SIGN MANNY

  52. MeesesGlokmah says:

I still don’t understand the hate for the black. I’m a young Mets fans, and those were the colors I was attracted to and grew up with. What Matt said about the new tradition and stuff makes sense, and I agree with him in that sense.

That said, I don’t like the look of the new jerseys (from what we’ve seen so far). Just because the walls are a certain color, doesn’t mean that should be the color someone wears. The jerseys look like they are faded, to me.

Anyway, if they have to change the black, I’d rather have the dark blue, rather than faded looking dark grey.

    • MeesesGlokmah says:

Oh. I was writing the above post during the time Matt updated this article. I am so glad these aren’t the official jerseys. I wouldn’t buy them.

  53. professor met says:

Sloooooooowwww news day. haha and matt, I know I’m not the first to say this, but the new comment format is a real turn off. I’ve been here since the beginning and I am now far less engaged with the comments because of this format.

    • RodKanehl says:

Worse than the new format is the hideous reporting by this site. Now that it is owned by SNY and therefore the Mets one would think that at least once in a while something would be checked before being publihed. Nah… That would require doing omething on your own, like a good job.

  54. Tidewater says:

Amazing how there are more than 100 comments on this topic and fewer than 50 on the previous one on personnel. Priorities, folks!

  55. Philnym31 says:

We can probably cross Jason Marquis off the list as a potential fifth starter for us. MLB Trade Rumors is saying that the Cubs and Rockies are nearing a deal. Supposedly, it’s Luis Vizciano in exchange for Jason Marquis.

  56. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

wow, slow news day huh. Hey guys I was at a modells today and saw a pink david wright shirt in the womens section…is this some sort of new alternate uniform. Im not sure I like the idea of pink jerseys but hey if they have world series’ patches on them whatever.

  57. ProudMetFan says:

I dont mean to sound like an ” I told ya so ” person but I had a strong feeling these were fakes. The Mets would have definetely announced it by now. Now they need to announce that they have signed Derek Lowe already or something! But personally I like the idea of Manny better.

  58. Krodamet says:

sign manny then move murphy to 2nd and castillo can just be his back up

no one wants manny . mets have an opportunity

  59. Krodamet says:

who agrees with my last comment?

    • ProudMetFan says:

I agree with the sign Manny part. That’s about it.

    • 2009_believe says:

      I agree.

I’m a big fan of the Murphy at second although its a very small minority who agree with me, could he really be worse than Castillo, it also seems that most of the Mets organization wants Murphy to play at least some position and if we sign a left field than where would Murphy play? I think there must be plans for Murphy but i’m not sure what

  60. Krodamet says:

OUR TEAM OUT TIME OUR NYM

  61. youthmovement says:

It only matters if two people want Manny, and they are named Fred and Jeff. If they change their minds, Omar would be on the next plane to CA to Boras’ office.

  62. Mike Go says:

The Mets colors are based on the colors of the Brooklyn Dodgers (Blue) and the NY Giants (Orange)

Why don’t they do a home jersey similar to the old Dodger home jerseys (Blue and White) and do away jerseys that are like the old Giant away jerseys (Orange, black and gray)? Blue and white hats at home, black and orange hats on the road.

Citi Field is supposedly designed as a salute to old National League NY baseball anyway.

  63. Krodamet says:

    lets go mets

  64. Krodamet says:

    murphy can play second base!

  65. Krodamet says:

oh and the jersey is a RUMOR
like there was a rumor the mets were gonna get jones but it never happened

and i know why the wilpons dont want manny

“For all the whining over A-Rod being a 24+1 player when he flirted with the Mets way back when, Manny is the epitome of 24+1. He openly dogged it in games because he was in a bad mood. Is that who you want on your team - or would you rather half a Wally Backman or a Lenny Dykstra?” >wilpons words

  66. Krodamet says:

    he got a blog people

  67. queenznick says:

get rid of the black - dont implement the gray - just stick to home whites with and road grays - TO me - cant do better than the road gray with the Blue NEW YORK and the Blue Hats

Home whites - i like the solid whites and the pinstripes -

  68. new_mets_fan says:

Wow, that grey uniform is so gaudy. I have no idea what’s the real reason, but it seems like the Mets have always been out to out-do themselves. The script in blue, surrounded by orange, with a dark shadow, with more white borders. I mean, how many borders are enough? Does ‘gaudy’ mean anything to their mgmt? Perhaps not. For example, just walking through the Trump Towers the other day, I couldn’t help but wonder how something so gaudy could have come to be.

They really need to truck down their uni to something simple. Check out Penn State, the Yankees, or any other number of unis which honor tradition, and don’t look like clown suits.
