Starting Pitcher: Rockies and Cubs talk Marquis

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Steve Phillips of ESPN.com is reporting the Cubs are close to trading RHP Jason Marquis to the Rockies for RHP Luis Vizcaino.

In early December, Jon Heyman of SI.com reported the Cubs and Omar Minaya had been discussing a trade that would send starting Marquis to the Mets.

According to published reports, the Mets rejected a deal from the Cubs during the Winter Meetings that would have swapped Marquis for Aaron Heilman, who was instead traded  to the Mariners for J.J. Putz.

The 30–year-old Marquis has won at least 10 games and pitched at least 190 innings in each of the last five seasons, while posting a 4.58 ERA, during which opponents hit .261 against him.

Moses Magnum December 30, 2008 at 6:49 pm

lol@cuns.. i swore it had the t in there. I was starting to think i was really drunk

Necciai27 December 30, 2008 at 6:50 pm

The Cuns? Who are they? And why did they eliminate the “t” from their name? ;)

queenznick December 30, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Yea Matt – we all dont like the Cubs – no need to call them names :)

Krodamet December 30, 2008 at 6:56 pm

cubs cubs cubs will never win a world championship again for a long time they lost to the dodgers!

if they beat the dodgers they would of beat the phillies
(in the playoffs)

The Captain December 30, 2008 at 7:19 pm

If Im not mistaking, wasnt Marquis a FA last year or a few years ago and Omar had no interest then right, well i dont think a sub par year with a hot cuby line up behind him would of generated interest to an 09 Mets roster that includes the best pitcher in baseball, Johan Santana

sabermetrician December 30, 2008 at 7:22 pm

I don’t think Omar was interested in Marquis. He had his chance and he skipped it. He wants either high quality players or high upside guys on the cheap. Pretty good way to do business actually.

BBmetsfreak36 December 30, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Eh, I liked him. But no big loss. Get back to work Omar.

phukthephills December 30, 2008 at 7:27 pm

im drawing a blank here did the mets trade showenweis?

BBmetsfreak36 December 30, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Yeah to the D-Backs. We ate like 1.6 mil on the remaining year and got uhm…
Austin Jackson? I think…
27 yr. old reliever the D-Backs gave up on when they thought he wasn’t going to mature.

phukthephills December 30, 2008 at 7:36 pm

oo thats right thank u

Philnym31 December 30, 2008 at 7:36 pm

It was for Connor Robertson.

Austin Jackson is a Yankees outfield prospect.

sabermetrician December 30, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Heck, I wish it had been for Austin Jackson! LOL

BBmetsfreak36 December 30, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Sorry that name just popped in my head b/c I thought D-Backs Connor Robertson – connor jackson – austin jackson.
Catch my mind fart?

therealsince86 December 30, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Not to mention that he is still a SP prospect.

sabermetrician December 30, 2008 at 7:43 pm

This has zero impact in my opinion. We didn’t want Marquis. We’d be much better with Lowe/Wolf, Lowe/Redding, Perez/Wolf, or Perez/Redding.

Philnym31 December 30, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Lowe/Wolf would be superb.

sabermetrician December 30, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Agreed.

scoopcoopdoop December 30, 2008 at 8:18 pm

according to NY times, the Mets have offered Lowe 3/36.

scoopcoopdoop December 30, 2008 at 8:19 pm

New York TimesThe Mets have offered the free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe – The Mets have offered the free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe a three-year contract for about $36 million, according to people who have been briefed on the discussions.

The Mets are not willing to offer Lowe more than a three-year deal.

Boras would not comment specifically on the Mets, but said, “Obviously, we’ve taken offers from a number of teams.” Boras said he was still in the process of establishing Lowe’s market. Lowe is believed to be seeking a five-year, $90 million deal.

MetzFanInTX December 30, 2008 at 8:36 pm

how is it that the NY Times mainly a Business paper in NY will get this info first before MLB or even the Mets site? something fishy here I think Bora’s paid the person to write that in to hype Lowes market value.

Franco December 30, 2008 at 8:20 pm

I can’t see any other team beating that offer. The Red Sox and Yankees are out of it now. And the Braves and the Dodgers aren’t interested in Lowe.

DoctorK_81 December 30, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Sign Ollie P and think about Sheets for a 1yr w/ incentives for a second yr. Also, I’d take Redding over Marquis. He’s cheaper and has better stuff.

I’d like to see this rotation in 09:

Santana
Sheets/Lowe
Perez
Pelf
Maine
Redding / Niece – backup or spot start

scoopcoopdoop December 30, 2008 at 8:20 pm

I guess M Noble’s sources were correct when he said Mets would make offers early this week.

Sylar December 30, 2008 at 8:27 pm

Can 3/36 really get Lowe?

scoopcoopdoop December 30, 2008 at 8:31 pm

3/36 for Lowe?

supposedly other teams have backed off of Lowe and Perez (the last of the decent SPs). That is why, if this report is accurate, that Mets could get Lowe for 3/36.

wrightstuff08 December 30, 2008 at 8:33 pm

“Can 3/36 really get Lowe?”

i doubt it, they are just starting off with a “Lowe” bid. lol

scoopcoopdoop December 30, 2008 at 8:34 pm

I’d guess it will end up taking 3/36 w/a team option for another 12-14 for 1 yr (like Krod).

Philnym31 December 30, 2008 at 8:35 pm

This is a great evaluation of the market by Omar. It will probably end up close to the 40 million dollar mark when it is all said and done. Scott Boras, give it up buddy, we ain’t overpaying when no one else is in the hunt.

Sylar December 30, 2008 at 8:35 pm

The Cubs could very well jump into the mix with Marquis’ salary gone.

There’s just no way that gets it done…

Philnym31 December 30, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Sylar, the Cubs cut that payroll to make a play on one of the free agent corner outfielders, most likely Milton Bradley. Sean Marshall will be now getting his shot in the rotation.

scoopcoopdoop December 30, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Marquis out of Chitown-good point.

They might jump in.

Franco December 30, 2008 at 8:39 pm

Well, who else can afford 3/36 for a starting pitcher? The other big market teams either have their staff set or can’t fit it into their payroll. Unless the Braves or a some bad team like the Nationals switch gears, we’re alone in the Lowe market unless his demands fall to something real low like 2 years.

scoopcoopdoop December 30, 2008 at 8:41 pm

MB and Lou Pinella-I’d like to see that screaming match!

twofours44 December 30, 2008 at 8:45 pm

yeah no way in hell that gets it done. 3 and 40+ is my guess.

nrmax88 December 30, 2008 at 8:51 pm

you realize how stupid it sounds when you say no way in hell 3/36 gets it done and then suggest 3/40? It is a marginal difference at the most.

BBmetsfreak36 December 30, 2008 at 8:56 pm

As far as baseball is concerned, you are probably right.
But I’m just saying I wouldn’t mind that marginal difference in what I make.

Joe D December 30, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Mets made a 3-year deal to Derek Lowe! Check it out…

twofours44 December 30, 2008 at 8:57 pm

i said 3/40+ . if you want me to pinpoint it i would say 3 / 42 plus option 4th year

therealsince86 December 30, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Still you are talking 2 million a year difference. Still not a big deal.

Joe D December 30, 2008 at 8:58 pm

i believe it was 3/36

Joe D December 30, 2008 at 8:58 pm

at least that was what I posted based on the NYT piece

twofours44 December 30, 2008 at 9:01 pm

joe d, sorry man yoru about 20 minutes too late

Joe D December 30, 2008 at 9:02 pm

sorry about what, I didnt know this was a race, lol

Joe D December 30, 2008 at 9:03 pm

I wish they hadn’t lowballed him, but it worked for K-Rod.

grotesmask December 30, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Yeah, I suppose they’re lowballing him, but I can’t imagine this guy’s going to get 5 yrs at 90mill. as Curry suggests Boras is asking for Lowe.

Man, I hope we resolve this some time really soon. I really favor Lowe over Perez. I have seen enough of Perez.

Joe D December 30, 2008 at 9:09 pm

I think Lowe is way ahead of Perez..

That said, Perez could have the five spot over Niese, anyday…

Krodamet December 31, 2008 at 11:06 pm

ya gotta believe ya gotta believe in 09
happy new year everybody!

ya gotta believe

this year is our year

we crush the phillies we show the phillies why the heck we are still NL’s best.
11-7 against them isnt enough
we have to pound the nl east
spit in ther face
kick dirt in there eyes
grand slams
no blown saves
mets magic late
the hr apple rising every 30 sec
fans holding up santanas K’s
hits after hits after hits
blow out games
shut out games
no hitter games
3 hr in a game

In 09 i believe the mets are capable to do any thing and if you think the mets are “Ok”
then go check again…
“we are the team to beat”
now lets prove it

“ya gotta believe in 09″
