Outfield: Dodgers working on Jones Deal
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 2, 2009 10:10 am

The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that the Dodgers are working with Scott Boras to reduce the $15 million due to Andruw Jones next season.

Later, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com wrote, “The Dodgers are hoping to spread that money over more years.  It could be done through an extension, which would move a chunk of money off the 2009 payroll. There also is the possibility of a deferred buyout, either to facilitate a trade or allow Jones to become a free agent.”

In Queens, I believe this is known as, ‘Pulling a Bobby Bonilla.”

Last week, at ESPN.com, Buster Olney said the Mets and Dodgers once discussed a deal that would swap Jones for Luis Castillo, who is due $18 million over the next three seasons.

However, the following day, Marty Noble quoted a person familiar with the talks as saying, “Nothing is ongoing, and nothing is going to happen.”

Speaking of outfielders…

According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, the Nationals could look to trade OF Lastings Milledge before the start of the season.

The 23–year-old Milledge hit .268 with 40 extra base hits, 24 stolen bases and a .330 OBP in 523 at bats last season.

Would you trade Ryan Church and Brian Schneider to the Nationals for Milledge?

Church is the real deal. Power in the gaps and a strong arm. Plus he hits well from both sides.

    • alex242 says:

Case my boy, happy new year.. uh.. last i checked church is a lefty… u meant he hits righties and lefties good right? lol.. was that it ?

    • stilltheEWM says:

Church also batted .250 in August and .209 in September…

And had a .319 OBP against Lefties.. ouch.

      • therealsince86 says:

I am sure based on his numbers in Washington and this up and down season that he is somewhere right inbetween his hot start and bad finish.
        I would expect a very solid .280 20 80 from Church.

        • stilltheEWM says:

Just don’t expect him to see him for more then 100 games.

          • therealsince86 says:

            Church played in
            128 in 2004
            106 games in 2005
            128 games in 2006
            144 in 2007
            So yeah, whatever.

          • reyesnwright says:

thereal, Not sure where you are getting your numbers from…Church played in 30 games in 2004, 102 games in 2005, 71 games in 2006, 144 in 2007, and 90 in 2008…I actually like Church a lot, but come on, you aren’t even close.

          • therealsince86 says:

Reyesnwright, I was adding minor league totals in for those years. As this discussion was about being injury prone and not talent.

Not to mention that because of going back and forth from the majors to minors you lose games and minor league seasons are shorter too. This also does not take into account how many games he did not play because he was platooned.

Point is that he has only been on the DL 3 times in his MLB career.

          • reyesnwright says:

Ah, my appologies, thanks for clearing that up. Anyway, I tend to agree with pretty much everything else you’ve been saying, and now knowing that he has been healthy for almost his whole career outside of last years flukes, I like his chances for having a healthy and productive 09 for us.

        • zer09 says:

Depending on where he hits ofcourse, his numbers may be a product of his place in the order, but if he continues to hit 2nd, .a 280BA would be a disappointment. Hitting between Reyes/Wright, he should bat 300 easy.

        • RodKanehl says:

30 years old and you expect something the guy has never come close to accomplishing!!!! So what is it based on. He’s certainly not a developing kid anymore….

    • chasmets says:

case I agree I keep church but against a tough lefty he can get eaten up sometimes. Thats when you get the day off!

    • zer09 says:

You guys are insane. We’re now looking to dump off Schneider and if a year ago someone would mention Church for Milledge straight up, there’d be a coup on metsblog. Don’t kid yourselves, he’s not even 24 yet! And calling Church “the real deal” is a reall far stretch. He still has not played a full season and has not proven anything really. I’d take him over Milledge today, but by the time Milledge is 30 (yes that’s how old Church is!) he is going to be much better.

Considering that Church is not a game changer and does not carry as much weight on the “win now” bandwagon, I would pull off this deal in a second. Don’t kid yourselves, Milledge was moved because of his antics and because we have FMart coming up behind him, NOT because the Mets gave up on his progress…

      • CaseStreet says:

So when Mills is 30, we’ll trade for him, but right now, no thanks, I’ll take Church and Schneider.

      • chasmets says:

I think your partially correct but lets not forget Omar though Schneider was going to be the guy who pulled the rotation together.
Lastings has alot of upside & may out hit Church but he will never play the field like Church can. His arm & leather are highly underrated when talking about outfield play.

        • zer09 says:

I’d probably agree about Schneider, but it seems to me like the team is trying to dump him off. If that’s the case, then you have to look at the trade as pretty much straight up with Schneider being a throw in. Otherwise, I agree, I’d keep both. The only 2 (or more) for 1 swaps that I like are the kind that bring back a legitimate star. Otherwise, you’re just down a player…

        • I must be the only person on here that thinks Schneider has any sort of value. As a pitcher, nothing is more valuable than a smart catcher who is basically a pitching coach behind the plate. I think the problem was Rick Peterson calling the pitches before he was canned, and afterwards Schneider called the games. Give him at least one more season to work with those guys…don’t bash him because he didn’t hit .280. We knew he wasn’t a good bat, but I think it is worth noting as well that he bested his career numbers in almost every single category last season.

      • reillys5 says:

church plays hard and pre-concussion he was our best player

schieder is great defensively and calls a great game

miledge is an absolute punk who i would never want on my team…thats why i wouldnt do the trade

    • phoola says:

      Ryan Church 2008 – 90 G, .276/.346/.439/.785
      Shawn Green 2007 – 130 G, .291/.352/.430/.782

This was an improvement? Another guy with “potential” and “attitude” that doesn’t deliver. I’m done with him.

  2. stilltheEWM says:

I would in a second take milledge back.. and clear the 5 million bucks we owe the Schnide..

Chuch was last year what he’s been his whole career.. unable to stay healthy and unable to perform a consistent level.

Let Milledge learn under Jerry instead of Willie.. and see if we can’t balance out the lineup with his Right Hand Bat..

    1.Reyes
    2. Murphy
    3. Wright
    4. Beltran
    5. Delagdo
    6. Milledge
    7. Castillo
    8. Castro
    9. Pitcher

    • Jaded1983 says:

I wouldnt. Whats to say milledge doesnt come back with a bad attitude? I dont know the guy, but he didnt leave queens in the best of circumstances, why would he come back positive?

And church was injured because he plays the game hard. he has that “grit” “fire” and “heart” that people claim eckstein has. it drives me wild reading that garbage about eck, when we have a guy JUST LIKE THAT and people want to trade him.

he will have a great year this year. as Case said above, great arm, good gap power, etc.

      • stilltheEWM says:

He’s injured EVERY YEAR.. what good is a guy who can never play a season healthy??

He’s played in more then 105 games exactly ONCE in his career and he’s 30 years old.

Toss in the .250 average in August, and the .209 in July.. and the dreadful OBP against lefties… I’m not sure what there is to get excited about in Ryan Church

        • therealsince86 says:

He played in 144 games in 2007 not because he was injured. Most of the previous years in Washington it was that he was platooned not that he was injured.

          • stilltheEWM says:

the 144 was the one time he’s played 105 games.. and now with us again this year 90 games..

Sorry but by age 30 it’s not freak or fluke… if you only play a full season once by age 30.. there’s a reason.

          • Jaded1983 says:

exactly, i think most people seem to miss the fact that he wasnt a full time starter in washington. when he did start every game last year (pre-injury) he was hitting great.

nym fans have no patience. the rays and phillies, etc., didnt get where they are by giving guys 1 year and then dumping them….

          • Angryredmenace says:

Jaded, the Rays and Phillies got where they are by losing a lot any getting good draft picks.Their teams are full of home grown talent. So of course they wouldn’t trade away good homegrown talent that cost their franchises little in the beginning.

        • mistermet5757 says:

he’s NOT injured every year!!! he’s been up and down between the minors and on the bench b/c the Nats were stupid and for whatever reason, Frank Robinson didn’t like him. get your facts straight and don’t make up lies!

          • Angryredmenace says:

Yeah, the helpless Nats kept sending him to the minors because he was completely Awesome and they just wanted to sabotage his career.LOL

      • 2009_believe says:

I agree, sometimes it seems like people are never satisified – if we had lastings back they would find something wrong with that, its the same people who think we should trade david wright because of that one at bat, i mean seriously.

    • zer09 says:

Honestly, #5-9 does not look like a championship lineup. Looks more like the Nationals…

    • The Slider says:

Jerry was already here when Milledge was a Met, remember? But, otherwise, I agree with your post. I think Milledge did “ok” last year and showed that he isn’t a complete bust. He should improve, hopefully, over the next couple of years. He needs to vastly improve his defense though – he plays way, way too deep in center field (with he back almost up against the fence). Maybe he’s more suited for LF or RF.

Questions: (1) what were Lasting’s power numbers last year? (2) does he have a good enough arm for RF?

  3. Elvis says:

i agree 100% … plus he is cheap, and under team control for a few years, which allows resources to be used at other positions.

  4. therealsince86 says:

Boring. Real story here is Jones, not Millthug.

    • Coolpapabell says:

Its funny because I saw you as a SABR guy, and most of them like Milledge over Schnide and Church. You are right though, the real story is Jones. But why not indulge on a slow day at work?

I would take L Millz back and watch him bat .275-.280 and a .380 OBP. It won’t happen though, because the club house hates him, and ownership isn’t in love with him either.

  5. chasmets says:

Church is going to be a steady player provided we don’t screw up & trade him…The Injury was a fluke if you were watching and at that point in time he was our BEST player no doubt about it.

    • stilltheEWM says:

He gets injured almost every year he plays.. washington sold high on him after he managed to stay healthy for one season amd then last year he went right back to playing in less then 100 games

      • therealsince86 says:

So you are saying that a guy that had 2 concussions is injury prone? Come on. What a loser statement.

        • stilltheEWM says:

Yeah he is.. cause he doesnt know how to catch a ball and not crash into a wall (he did the SAME THING in 2005).. or how to play hard and not get hurt.. Some guys just cant stay healty.. he’s one of them..

And when we needed him the most he was awful down the stretch.. completely dreadful in August and September.. didn’t Nick Evans best him for the start in the final day of the season??

What more do you need to.. the guy is a borderline everyday outfield.. andother left handed bat in this lineup that needs a righty… Really he’s replacable.. and if there was a deal that involved him that made this team more balanced.. they should do it.

          • Dirtysanchez says:

as awful as church was when he came back..if you look at the whole year i believe milledge put up very slightly better numbers than church in way more games….so you want to make an argument that church is replaceable fine…but your going to replace him with virtually the same thing(mind you milledge was hurt too this year) and we are down a catcher……

          • therealsince86 says:

Duh, if there was a trade of Johan Santana that made the team better they should do it. What a dumb statement.

Answer this, how many times has he been on the DL in his career? I count 3 times.
Concussion, Ribs, and toe. He has missed 102 games since 2002 and 67 of them were this year because of concussions.

            He is not inury prone.

          • zer09 says:

Dirty, the catcher argument makes sense, but replacing Milledge with Church is an upgrade – not because they put up similar numbers (which i completely agree with) but because Milledge is going to be 24 and Church is going to be 31. We may not be racing horses, but at equal performance, I’ll take the younger stallion any day.

Oh, and guys, MILLEDGE IS JUST AS INJURY PRONE AS CHURCH. He has not stayed healthy for a full year throughout his entire career (MLB and MiLB)

      • RChruch says:

Dude really “He’s injured EVERY YEAR” you should check your stats before you speak the only other time he has been out on the DL was in 2005 other than that he goes out and plays hard. And has for stinking it up the last two months really man he had TWO CONCUSSIONS in less than a year. The man went out a tried to help the team when he shouldn’t have even been out there. So sit back and let your thoughts simmer a little bit before you blurt them out!!!!!

  6. alex242 says:

why would we want milledge back?? didn’t we see what he was doing last year? he’s not a good fielder, and is average at best offensive wise, and another thing guys, schneider gets a knock for not being that good of a hitter, but he hit very well in sept, plus, he was hurt most of the year, and i think he’s very underrated as a manager of the game… if we keep him fresh he can give us so so numbers at catcher.

  7. TugTheMan says:

stupidest poll yet. why post a poll that would not ever come true? real thing is right why not foucus on the real stories such as jones, manny, giants, and so fourth.

    • therealsince86 says:

Agreed, that’s just a crap stirring poll trying to get a lot of post on a slow day.

  8. therealsince86 says:

I don’t get why people want to get rid of one of the true grit players on our team but then they fuss about heart and grit? I don’t know if I even believe in those terms but if they exist Church is a great example of them.
The last thing we need is another player with a fragile ego and a me first attitude. Hmmmm, who does that describe?

  9. patfez says:

i’d take milledge back but not for schneider and church. maybe just schneider or some low level players. maybe for marlon anderson. Milledge/Murphy would be a good platoon and Church/Tatis occasionally or Delgado/Tatis to keep them fresh. get rid of castillo…LETS GO METS

    • zer09 says:

I wonder if we can get Tim Lincecum for Ramon Castro? That would be a fair trade

      • SantanaClause says:

You would give up CASTRO for Tim Lincecum i was thinking more along the lines of cash considerations or a player to be named later!

        • bucknersankles says:

THE ONLY WAY THE GIANTS GIVE UP LINCECUM IS IF WE SWEETEN THE DEAL BY THROWING IN CASTILLO

  10. CaseStreet says:

Just got a message from the Mets, said their New Year’s resolution is to lock up the NL East in August!

    • TugTheMan says:

and just like the rest of us, they’ll break their resolution by march.

    • alex242 says:

Case, we could’ve the past 2 years if we had a bullpen.. lol.. with that being said, i think that this year, we will win easily.. i’ll say by maybe 6 games..

  11. Dirtysanchez says:

we would be out a good fielder and a catcher….sorry dont want to take a chance on v-teck and always hurt castro…id stick with church and schnider.

  12. alex242 says:

and after seeing how much hatred we get from those teams in the NL east why would we make a deal with them, they might be trying tyo trick us!!

  13. EdH says:

    Church > Milledge >>>>> A.Jones.

Why is anyone still talking about Jones?

    • alex242 says:

      Becoz we’re bored..

    • therealsince86 says:

Umm because we already have Church and we won’t get Milledge?

      • alex242 says:

If the mets would’ve had 2 guys like church in the bullpen we would’ve won the division by like 10 games.. he struggle down the strech true, but he’s a gritty player and down to business type of guy.. we should be lucky to have him..

        • therealsince86 says:

          Agreed.
I am just not sold on the Murphy/Tatis platoon.
I think that adding another OF is a necessity for insurance purposes. I would rather have Wiggy the most but Abreu, Dunn, Winn, Jones are all options.

  14. realmet says:

I like Church, but we need another righty bat in the outfield. If not Manny then at the very least a platoon bat for LF after we sign a few more pitchers. Marcus Thames, Eric Hinske as fallback options? As far as Schneider goes, I was very dissapointed in that guy last year. He came over with a big rep as defensive stud and he was no such thing. I think his defense was average at best and he never, ever gets a big hit. I would trade him in a heartbeat if we could get Molina or Salty or maybe even somebody else who’s decent.

    • therealsince86 says:

This RH LH thing is overrated. Especially considering how many SH we have. You can easily make a lineup against a LH pitcher without having back to back guys even as is and with Murphy in instead of Tatis (which you do not have to do)
Reyes, Muprhy/Church, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Church/Murphy/Tatis, Castro/Schnieder, Castillo.
Now don’t get me wrong, I want another OF so we don’t end up with the Murphy/Tatis platoon but I don’t care what handed he is.

      • alex242 says:

if we don’t get manny i’m up for somebody like dunn i guess.. just please no abreu.. is painfull to see him play..

        • therealsince86 says:

That’s really a myth too. Out of Burrell, Manny, Dunn and Murphy Abreu would easily be the best LF.

          • alex242 says:

TRS, i 100% disagree with you.. he can’t field.. doesn’t have a strong arm, and if we’re taking offens, burrel, dunn or manny would easily put double the fear this guys puts..

          • therealsince86 says:

Look at his fielding numbers compared to the rest of the group and factor in that he played RF. He would easily be a better OF.
And offensively he is much more consistant than Burrell and still has a high OBP. Not to mention that he is a good SB guy as well. He is not a power hitter but would fit in very well in the #2 spot.

  15. stearnsfan12 says:

This team needs one player for the offense, and one player only. MANNY RAMIREZ. You can say what you want about how this team produced but are you willing to go “all in” on Tatis and Murphy continuing what were pretty remarkable seasons again? Willing to bet it all that the Delgado of the 2nd half, and not the first comes back for an entire season? Willing to think Castillo can be the hitter he once way, no questions asked? Like Church, pre-concussion or post-concussion stats to return?

The Phils aren’t going anywhere this year. They haven’t lost much from last year, and they have talent. We need to get the best hitter available, if the Mets can fit him in financially. Manny is a difference maker. I read an article about where his stats where when he was supposedly dogging it and they were better than any Mets were at that point of the season. This team will not do anything of value if they do not get Manny. Mark that one down. The bullpen can hold leads now, but what will happen when the offense sputters with RISP like they did last season, especially in the clutch? No upgrades.

Memo to Wilpons; stop worrying about the payroll and make a move that shows you are SERIOUS about contending. Manny can hit better than anyone currently on the Mets team and would thrive in the playoff atmosphere of the renewed Mets-Phils rivalry. He’s a winner, though an eccentric one. I will take that any day of the week. Re-sign his buddy Pedro as your #5 guy and I bet Manny is alright as he pads his HOF resume and tries to bring another ring to the Mets.

    • therealsince86 says:

As much as I like Manny, get over it. It’s not happening now that there is a market.

  16. SantanaClause says:

I like church but just to remind you all i believe it was church who was the last out of 2008 and i believe he had a runner on second…

  17. therealsince86 says:

The more I think about this Manny and the Giants thing the more I like it.
The Giants, shhhhh, don’t really have a 2B. MAYBE, if we traded Castillo, Castro, prospects and cash for Winn and Molina?
    Example
Winn makes 8.6 million, Molina makes 6 million.
Castro makes 2.5 million, Castillo makes 6 million.
Mets send Evans, Kunz, Castro, Castillo and 6 million.
Giants pick up a 2B and a Catcher but it only cost them 2.5 million this season and they save 12 million?

    • jaydh says:

If the Giants sign Manny, I don’t really see them trading their other vets since they are under the delusion that they can compete.

      • therealsince86 says:

Thye have other holes that need to be filled and need the money for Manny and the other holes. Someone in the OF has to get traded anyway and it won’t be Rowand as he has to play CF and Roberts has less trade value than Castillo at this point. In fact would any body do Castillo for Roberts?

  18. bob burket says:

WHY CAN’T THE METS DO A BUYOUT AGREEMENT WITH CASTILLO LIKE THE DODGERS ARE TRYING WITH A JONES AND THEN SIGN HUDSON. I THINK MANNY IS STAYING ON THE LEFT COAST LA OR SF. I THINK A GOOD OPTION WOULD BE PAT THE BAT BURRELL. CHURCH AND SCHNEIDER FOR MILLEDGE? WHAT IS THIS, AMATEUR HOUR? FORGETABOUTIT.

    • jaydh says:

Hudson is overrated. As well as Burrell.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

im sure that will not stop omar from persuing hudson the second he can unload castillo….

    • therealsince86 says:

We don’t even know what the Dodgers deal will be. Not to mention that it is much harder to restructure a 3 year deal than a 1 year deal. And Jones does not want to be in LA where as Castillo still wants to be here. Also, in LA they have a replacement and we don’t.
So if you buy out Castillo and sign Hudson you are basically paying 16 million a year for Hudson.

    • twofours44 says:

because we will be paying bonilla until 2030.

i believe the milledge church schneider question was more of a question in hindsight to see who after a year still likes the trade.

  19. alex242 says:

CASTILLO is as of now the worst signing in the new york mets history!!!!!!

    • therealsince86 says:

Not ture, Bonilla, Vaughn and Alomar disagree with you.

      • alex242 says:

bonilla ok, but vaughn and alomar were trade.. they don’t count as the worst trade top 3 in mets history.. castillo to me is the worst, ALL new york hates the guy…

    • steadyeddie says:

      Worse than BobbyBo?
Worse than the sandwich man, Mo V?
      Wow, that’s bad…
Worse than trading Ryan and/or Seaver?
Mets have made some bone head deals…

    • kingman 26 says:

Hmmm, Alex, maybe you are a bit younger than me, but I vote for George Foster in that honor, and how about Bonilla?

And seriously, he may not quite be in that league of horrid futility, but Schoeneweis’ contract, considering his career and other offers at the time, is really quite horrifyingly impressive itself.

      • alex242 says:

        KM 26:

the thing is foster and bonilla at least hit occasionnaly home runs.. this guy can’t get the ball past the infield!!!!!!!

        • kingman 26 says:

          OK, Alex, good point there!

But in 1982, man, I was more psyched for Foster than any player the Mets had ever obtained…I was 15 then and sure he would hit 50 homers every year.

But we got Keith in 1983, and that did eventually make it all OK…..

          • alex242 says:

i hear ya, trough out the years the mets have made stupid trades, but signing wise this has got to be the worst… 90% of the ppl in NY do not want this guy here, and if there’s a poll who as a fan of the mets who we hate the most on our team it will be this guy by a universe margin!!!

          • therealsince86 says:

No doubt but that’s not fair now as we shipped out his only competition in that poll. LOL.

But anyway. The signing was bad because of the years. It still has not hurt us cash wise and I don’t expect it will. Unless you really wanted to pay Hudson 4/40.

        • bucknersankles says:

AMONG THE WORST SIGNING’S IS PERHAPS THE SIGNING THAT NEVER WAS, WITH THE 1ST PICK IN THE COUNTRY OF THE 1966 DRAFT THE NY METS SELECTED THE IMMORTAL STEVE CHILCOTT.
THE VERY NEXT PICK WAS A KID FROM CALIFORNIA…………………………… REGGIE JACKSON.
          WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN.

    • zer09 says:

So this post is pretty misplaced. But feel free to vent. We got nothing else to do but read this crap anyway…

  20. steadyeddie says:

If we cut the bull, we actually needed quite a bit to be considered championship caliber for 2009.
Closer and set up have been addressed, in spades!
    Still need a 2 and 5 starter.
    Still need a 2nd baseman and a LF’er.
Upgrades at C, 1st and RF would be very positive.
I love The Mets. But playoffs?
In reality, not likey with this crew.

    • therealsince86 says:

Come on, seriously? You think the Mets have to have a perfect team just to make the playoffs considering where we have finished the last 2 years with what we did have?

You are going to get at least 1 SP and most likely another offensive player. It won’t make us the best team in the MLB but for sure enough to compete for the playoffs. Look at the Phillies roster and see how many places they had problems. 1 OF spot, 1 IF spot, catcher, 1-2 SP.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

there was no way this team can solve all its problems in one offseason…if thats what you thought or anyone for that matter than you were mislead.

      • sabermetrician says:

The issue is, we still need more. We won’t address all of the issues, but we NEED a 2, a 5 and one offensive improvement.

      • jaydh says:

Thats the thing. The reason the Mets even have so many issues is because they have been overlooked since the end of 2006. These issues such as the bullpen should have already been addressed prior to this season thereby leaving a pitcher and hitter to acquire. But rather we have to get 2 top bullpen arms, 2 starters, 2 bats to be a legit contender. We just don’t have the money to do it all at once. Omar has let this team slip too much the last 2 years.

        • therealsince86 says:

But we don’t need ALL of those holes filled to make the playoffs. Look at the teams that made the playoffs this year. How many of them had no holes?

          • kingman 26 says:

Correct TRS….the 29 or however many leads the pen blew made it look like we needed a lot more bats than we do. One more would be nice, but as we have fixed the pen, a starter or two is clearly what we need, along with maybe one more bullpen arm. Personally, I think if we add Lowe, we are done with big moves. Or Ollie and a 5th starter.

I mean, games we had 5–3 leads sure would have been better with a couple more runs in the 6th or 7th, but with a pen that blows maybe 10–12 leads or less, after last year, our bats will not seem the slightest bit deficient.

          • Dirtysanchez says:

good point(as usual) real. We just need our peices to perform well at the right time. Most of us would not think lidge could go 73-0 in save opps but he did. Our offense was not a major issue last year as it was our pitching that lead us to our demise and omar has fixed that. We have a long way to go for sure but as real said every team has holes…

          • alex242 says:

i wonder if lowe doesn’t come, is sheets in our radar at all?

          • alex242 says:

            Dirty:

was that a typo, or did i miss that lidge was 73 and 0 in saves situation??

          • Dirtysanchez says:

            alex:
lol yup absolutly a typo(exaggeration), but i hope you understood my point. The market on sheets is very quiet……wonder if omar makes a lowball/low risk offer for him.

          • alex242 says:

Lol, yeah dirty i thought so as well.. man i tell you, i want something to be done.. pitching wise we need a stud.. if we have a solid 1-4 we can be a very dangerous club all year..

          • therealsince86 says:

I think it depends on what happens with Lowe. If we get Lowe then I expect a trade for a #5 starter or going with Niese. If it’s Perez then I would think Redding stands a chance. If it’s Garland then I think it has to be Garland and Wolf.

          • alex242 says:

wow, that’s why i’m still praying for sheets and garland/perez/lowe if the mets won’t spend anymore it can be done..

  21. sabermetrician says:

Hey everyone the actuarial exam results for the third exam came out today and I PA SSED!!!

  22. therealsince86 says:

I wonder if the Mets would be interested in Noah Lowry? He was injured last year and makes 4.5 million next year. Good guy to compete with Niese. The Giants have 6 SP. I would rather have Sanchez but he would cost a good hitter. Lowry I would think would cost much less.
Maybe a trade for Winn and Lowry as the Giants are looking for some salary relief to get Manny. That would save them 13 million dollars.

    • therealsince86 says:

Take it a step further and send Castillo, Evans, Kunz and 6 million. Giants get him for free for a year as they need a 2B and we save 12 million over the life of Castillo’s contract.
The Net would be we add Winn, Lowry for 13 million and pay 6 million on Castillo. Yet Castillo would have cost us 18 million so we almost break even.

      • therealsince86 says:

Keeping the wheels turning that cost us a lot of money for this season I guess. 13 million added to payroll. But it does fill 2 spots that have to be filled in LF and #5 starter. Would we still have the money to sign Lowe?
If we could some how do Lowe and I guess Hudson on an 7-8 million dollar deal the lineup would look prett good.
Reyes, Winn, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Church, Hudson, Schnieder

Johan, Lowe, Pelfrey, Lowry, Maine (just to not have 2 LHSP in a row).
Added 13 for Lowe, 7 for Hudson and 13 from the Giants. Thats 33 million. Don’t know if they will spend that much.

        • alex242 says:

idk about lowry, even thoug hhe was good he’s a big time risk.. just like capuano

        • Dirtysanchez says:

i dont see them adopting a yankee philosophy any time soon im afraid real. Keep the wheels turning tho.

          • therealsince86 says:

You really think that is a Yankee philosophy there Dirty? I would think that signing Hudson there is the only bad move. Take that out and sign Grudzy for 2 million and I see it being almost cost friendly.
I think the Mets understand that if they get a #2 SP they still need to bring in a Redding type who would cost as much as Lowry anyway. 8 million on Winn is what they would have to pay the other OF but they get rid of Castillo’s contract.

          • reillys5 says:

if we are going to make a trade with the giants, why not add molina in the deal? all while trading scheider and castillo and picking up cora and maybe dunn or abreu

reyes church wright delgado beltran dunn molina cora?

  23. Philnym31 says:

Noah Lowry would make great sense. I recall the Mets having interest in him too when we were looking to deal Milledge. The Giants wanted Lastings with a pitching prospect from Omar at the time, and then we turned elsewhere making the trade with the Nationals instead.

    • therealsince86 says:

Me too. I will stay convinced that it would be a great way to unload Castillo and solve LF and #5 SP.

      • Philnym31 says:

Definitely, TRS86. I’m right on board with you. Lowry has dealt with forearm injuries recently, so he’s not a guarantee. However, if we are able to pluck him off as one of the members in a package deal, I’d be very pleased. How does a lefty tag team of Lowry/Niese for the 5th spot sound? Outstanding.

        • therealsince86 says:

AGreed, and if he is not healthy then you lose 4.5 million. If he is then you have a 2010 option for only 6.5 million.

  24. Kherubconamor says:

I’ll take Milledge back in a heartbeat. He breaks out this year.

  25. fongulalou says:

This really is a dopey thread. But I’ll chime in
anyway. What would make anyone think The
Nats are dumb enough to pull an Omar and
reversethe deal? Lasto, for all the talk of attitude etc.,Is still a kid and therefore still somewhat a prospect. Church on the other hand has journeyman written all over him.
At 30 has one healthy, full season under his belt and prior to the deal here, for years
couldnt break the Nats lineup fulltime.
Now w/the concussion problem hes more
of a ?.Scheider is an overrated defensive
Catcher who simply cant hit anymore.
Ask yourselves, which of these three players
    has the most value?

  26. Gina says:

Eh I think Church will be a solid outfielder, but I doubt he’s going to be enough better than Milledge over the next 1-2 years to justify the huge difference in upside/age/cost.

Basically I think it was a solid trade but I’d undo it in a second. Although I think the nationals are idiots wanting to trade him so fast.

    • therealsince86 says:

I would think considering his mpay there is a very good reason the Nats would be trying to trade him. Most likely it’s the same reason we did.

      • Gina says:

It can’t be because of his attitude if they’re willing to put up with Elijah Dukes.

        • fongulalou says:

Exactly!, But Gina if it was a solid trade
why would you want to undo it?

          • Gina says:

Because I prefer youth/upside. I think for where we’re at a year ago Church made more sense at the time because we were in win-now mode but I think now the gap between Milledge and Church is going to be minuscule. In fact I’m worried Milledge might actually be better than Church, at least offensively, in less than a year.

          • fongulalou says:

OK But I still think for the most part we’re
in a win now mode and not to go ’round and
’round on this again but Omar trades one
of the top prospects in baseball for a platoon
/4th OFer and a shop worn Catcher?

          • Gina says:

Oh I think we’re in win now mode now too. The difference is I think, had he been healthy, a full season of Church last year would have been a huge improvement of a full season of what Milledge. I don’t think the same thing will be true in 2009. And I definitely don’t think it will be close to true in 2010.

Personally I didn’t like the trade, because not only were we selling incredibly low like you said it was a huge down grade in age/controllability, Schneider will be an FA soon and Church doesn’t really have much upside, in fact a lot of sites project him to fall off a cliff over the next 3 seasons offensively, but for one season it made sense.

The problem is I don’t like the fact that our front office only seems to think one season at a time, that and the fact that we made a trade like that but still left so many holes unfilled which doesn’t make any sense if you’re going into win now mode.

  27. fongulalou says:

    Agreed.

  28. MetLifer says:

Ehhh.. Maybe I can’t read, but nowhere in the article did it say that they was looking to trade Milledge at all. It just said that he was better suited for a corner outfield spot.

  29. reillys5 says:

i dont get it, when its a slow day and matt doesnt put anything up people complain about how his head is too big since the sny deal and that he should put up some opinions and maybe a poll

today is a slow day and he did both and now people are complaining its a stupid poll..the guy cant win give him a break

  30. realmet says:

Omar needs to speed things up. Even though he made 2 nice moves, that’s all he’s done. He should have a utility infielder and a lefty relief specialist by now. Stop acting so cheap and waiting to see how much money we have left after the SP signs. It’s ridiculous! We can sign guys like this without having to wait. Did the Cubs wait for Bradley and or Peavy when they signed Aaron Miles for $5 mil for 2 years. What are we waiting for? To see if we have a few million dollars left? Insane – we’re a big market team with a new stadium. ACT LIKE IT!!!

  31. Krodamet says:

oh heck no we aint trading church for Milledge
we traded him last year even tho we need a young bat no
