Yesterday, the Denver Post suggested the Giants are set to
make a quiet, but aggressive, run at free-agent OF Manny Ramirez.
Additionally, Jon Heyman of SI.com says, “The Giants could become the biggest threat to the Dodgers hopes to retain Ramirez.”
Meanwhile, today, Dennis O’Donnell of KPIX TV in San Francisco believes the Giants have offered a three-year deal, with a fourth-year option, to Ramirez.
Last week, in a post to his blog for the Star-Ledger, Dan Graziano explained why there is little chance Ramirez ends up in Queens, despite Omar Minaya’s interest.
By the way, a group of fans started a petition to sign Ramirez, which you can sign by clicking here.
In early November, the Los Angeles Times said the Dodgers made an initial offer to Ramirez worth $25 million per season, for either two or three seasons.
That day, in a poll to MetsBlog.com, 78 percent of people who voted said they would not give Ramirez a three-year, $75 million deal to sign with the Mets, while only 22 percent said they would.
So, let’s try it again and see if things have changed…

only 367 sigs on the petition?
If the rumor is correct I would not sign the petition either. 4 years for Manny?
three years with a fourth year option? that sounds like a deal.
Being that we are not going to get Manny we need to start using it to our advantage. Abreu, Burrell, Dunn should be cheaper. The Giants and Dodgers will be looking to unload payroll to sign Manny….
If the Giants reel in Manny, they become the team to beat in the N.L. West.
They still have a lot of holes.
The whole N.L. West has holes. The Giants have been very active though, signing Edgar Renteria and Randy Johnson. If they sign Manny, they are clearly the team to beat in the West. If the Dodgers lose Manny and Lowe they are in serious trouble.
Yeah.. the Giants will clearly be the OLDEST TEAM to beat. LOL
No Metlifer, that would be the Phils with 46 year old Jamie Moyer, 41 year old Matt Stairs, and soon to be 37 year old Raul Ibanez. Remember this in September when your Muts are pulling off The Big Choke…Part 3 !
Right. That’s with Barry Zito and Randy Johnson in the rotation. The team to get beated you mean. Gotcha.
1) johnson was better than oliver perez last year, and will be better than him this year. might wanna look at the numbers first.
2) a rotation of lincecum, cain, sanchez, RJ, zito, is pretty f’ing good, even if zito will be the highest paid 5th starter around.
Even if it was true (which it isn’t), it wouldn’t mean much. They haven’t produced a great team since the 2002 Giants…
Do Rowand or Winn become expendable? They do not have much at 2B. Rowand for Castillo and a backup OF (Jeremy Reed) might give them some salary relief and the mets a good rightfielder
That’s pretty lopsided. Rowand is an allstar. Castillo is a washout. Why the hell would the Giants want to do that?
Has Dunn ever been on a winner? Does he make his teams better? Not slamming Dunn, but does he help or hurt the lineup? How does he rank in those intangible stats like VORP and winshares?
Well he was on the Reds his whole career so he hasnt really won, but thats not entirely his fault
He’s played for the Reds his entire life (almost). You can’t hold that against him.
And looking at the bottom of our lineup a guy with a .400 OBP and near 1.000 OPS can’t hurt.
Reyes, Church, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Dunn is a very good first 6.
I agree, except there are just too many lefties in that lineup. JC Romero would eat us alive…
LOL so now we are supposed to mold our lineup around…. JC Romero? Besides isn’t that what Tatis and Castro are for? You would have 3 guys batting RH and 3 LH against the LHRP.
those stats are the opposite of intangible, but whatever.
Seriously can we get Rowand cheap to offload the salary they would take on to get Manny?
That’d be nice
I would think they would want to keep Rowand to play CF. Winn and Roberst however will become very available.
roberts is not an upgrade over anything we have. Winn might be good, but will they take Castillo?
I’ve liked Rowand ever since he challenged the fence – and won
I would hardly call breaking 15 bones in his face winning…
Aaron Rowand is a winner ! He was a major part of the ChiSox winning the World Series, and he was a major part that turned the Phils into a playoff team.. He is the kind of player that leaves everything on the field but more importantly, he is a force in the clubhouse. He is exactly what the Mets need, but there is no way the Giants are going to move him. They are looking to make a run and he is a major piece of their plan. If you plug Manny in that lineup along with Renteria, you will see much better ofensive numbers from Rowand.
aaron rowand stinks. 104 OPS+. one good offensive season in a hitter’s park does not a career make. his defense will only get worse as well. he doesn’t have the bat to play a corner OF and we already have the best CF in the majors. why do we need him again?
I have finally figured out how the Mets should get Manny. Like the Dodgers did.
He only seems to put up huge numbers when interested. And for him, interested means playing for his wallet.
So, a team like the A’s should sign him for a large 1 year deal (as-suming the rest of the market collapses). With, of course, the intent of trading him for a prospect haul at the deadline.
Thus, the MEts can see how their other optins are working out. If they are short a bat, use some of the prospects they saved this winter to trade for the impact one.
Manny of course will be playing (again) for a contract, so he will have a big finish on the big stage.
Hey, this is just as plausible as the trade scenerios I read on here!
And for the A’s, it would basically be like paying 15million (2/3 of the 2009 salary) for prospects (whoever they may be, Fmart, Neise, etc.)
So you wouldn’t sign Manny to a 3 year deal but you’re prepared to move “prospects” for less than a season of his services? Smart.
this is definitely one of the silliest scenarios I’ve heard…especially since you specifically name FMart as part of the deal….so we’ll ship off fmart so that we can have manny for half a season, so he can do really well playing for that new contract, which he will then sign with another team after the season, then we wont have manny, OR fmart to play lf in ‘10…Wow…
what the mets have to do is sign Orlando Hudson to a multiyear deal. Get rid of awful Luis Castillo by trade, sign Lowe. Get one more reliever and a better bat at catcher.
Right, we’ll get right on it.
You are not geting rid of Castillo without paying most of his contract and then paying Hudson 10 million a year on top of that?
If it was that easy, we would already have lowe signed, and hudson as our 2nd baseman…but its not…we are not getting rid of castillo without eating a large chunk of his salary, so whatever we eat, PLUS hudson’s 10mm, is 2nd base really worth that much money??? Or do we take our chances that castillo is serious about getting another chance to return to form, and if he comes even CLOSE, he is great…I think that choice is obvious…and there arent a boatload of catchers out there right now either,, especially with a big bat like you suggested…
Really? You don’t think they are trying to do those things? It amazes me how easy some fans think this job is.
That was truly a John Madden statement: “If one teams scores more than the other, they should be the winner.”
Randy Winn would be the perfect #2 hitter on this team and would play very solid defense in LF.
.300 with 10 HR, 25 SB and high OBP. 1 year deal. What’s not to like? Would not get rid of Castillo but would give us a very reliable player that produces in LF as insurance for Church, Murphy and Tatis. That way you have those 3 for 1 position instead of 2.
Winn would be great. He a perfect #2 hitter.
While you do make sense, i think this team needs a legit #5 or #6 hitter a lot more than a #2. Just saying.
A #5 hitter wouldn’t hurt, but with a good year from Wright, Beltran and Delgado, plus with a healthy year from Church, we’ll be fine in the power stats.
You know, if I win the lotto, I’ll be a millionaire…
Well you have to look at it this way getting Winn slides everyone else down. Unless you think that Murphy is really ready. What I like is the OBP and defense.
It doesn’t slide anyone down. You plug in Winn into a (pretty much empty) #2 hole that’s currently occupied by Castillo. All it does is move Castillo to #8. The next step is moving him to the bench. I’m actually starting to like this idea…
I was looking at wins injuries also. Absolutely nothing serious. Plus, with his stats, he would be a fine fit on this team.
The Giants are going to be a more complete team with Manny. I mean, I was watching Hot Stove Live on the new MLB Network, and everyone agreed that Manny is not only a team changer, but a division changer. It would have been lovely to have signed him. But, as this story says, the SFG are pursuing him AGGRESIVELY, so we can now forget it for good.
3 years 75 is pushing it especially for a 37 year old even though he has shown no signs of slowing down
The only way we had the slightest hope of getting manny was if the dodgers signed someone like Dunn (which was the buzz a few days ago) and no other team got involved, and we could maybe swipe him on a 1yr, 2yr deal TOPS…the dodgers initial offer was 2/45, and if this giants buzz is real, they are saying 3 or 4?? NOw the dodgers seem to be re-motivated to bring him back, so he will wind up getting probably 3 years, so if nothing else, maybe we can squash all the manny talk here….There is no way I would go out to like 3yrs on manny…(the absolute stretch would be 2 with the 3rd as an option) and thats sounding like it wont cut it…
Great, you can always count on the Giants to offer a ridiculously stupid contract. Congrats Wilpons, you finally have your excuse not to sign the guy.
Why would you sign a guy like Manny to a small contract, anyway? Think about it…do you think he will be happy with less money than he wanted? Nope…and what happens when Manny isn’t happy? Well, Manny doesn’t play.
And it sounds like the dodgers are getting pretty serious again also, so it could go back and forth between them….somewhere in here it said about how they are working on re-structuring andrew jones’ deal to spread out the money, or something, and it said they are working on this WITH Boras!!! Put 2 and 2 together, and you have manny going back to the dodgers, and we can all move on with our lives….I’m looking forward to manny signing more than I was looking forward to teixera signing….(not that I wouldnt want him under the right circumstances, but I cant take the manny talk anymore!!!)
I REALLY can’t see the big deal on signing manny for 3 or 4yrs. This guy is not another aging player the mets wud sign and in two yrs fall off the charts.. We are talking about MANNY RAMIREZ. He is going into the hall of fame and is prob the best right handed hitter i have ever seen. Why not lock this amazing talent up, and let him finish his career in a met uniform… WAKE UP
Best right handed hitter you have ever seen? You must mean watched “live” because that is a very bold statement. What about guys like Joe DiMaggio or Hank Aaron? Or even older–Honus Wagner, Rogers Hornsby, and Willie Mays. I’d even be able to make a case for A-Rod being a slightly better RHH than Manny…
He’s definitely a HOF, but I think you’re giving him a little too much praise.
dimaggio, hank aaron, and manny have the same career OPS+, actually. mays’ OPS+ was 156. pretty crazy that they’re so close in that particular stat. a-rod’s is 147. and i don’t think it’s fair to compare the quality of competition that manny has to face to that of wagner and hornsby’s day. they were the best of their time, but there were so many terrible players in the 10s and 20s.
manny’s up there with the best RH hitter i’ve ever seen. he’s a top 20 hitter of all-time, to be sure.
I think it’s ironic that despite the fact that every message board turns into a “get manny” campaign, the majority of mets fans don’t want him. I know he would be great in the middle of that lineup, but left field is not our problem. I don’t think manny fits on this team. lets fix the pitching and if we get someone better than tatis/murphy, great if not i’m ok with those guys considering we still have reed, pagan, and everyone frogets about nick evans. I know he’s not a natural LF, but he filled in decently last year. Plus we still have the wonder boy Fmart in waiting. If the money is there burning a hole in the mets pocket then take the 20 mil you’d be paying manny and spend it on this combo (orlando hudson, jon garland, another decent FA releiver, alex cora and adam dunn or baldelli, or kotsay or jaque jones or ty wiggington.)
Obviouslly, im talking about ballplayers i have seen in my day. im 28.. as far as comparing arod to manny.. your comparing a winner to a loser. a clutch player to a choke artist…
For me, the Mets offense was good early in games and awful thereafter. So I looked at Elias Sports Bureau at stats for Late Innings in Close Games for the following.
Delgado, Wright, Beltran, Reyes, Church had a combined 223 AB’s that resulted in 18 RBI’s. If you remove Beltran’s 49 AB’s and 8 RBI’s what’s left is 10 RBI’s in 174 AB’s.
Manny alone for 2008: 48 AB’s and 9 RBI’s. While this didn’t exactly give me an overwhelming case in favor of Manny since the selection’s I made are skewed by having Reyes who shouldn’t be looked at as an RBI guy and Church who missed large chunks of the season it does make the case for how awful our team performed in the clutch and how we can use him. Only Beltran’s number’s could hold up as comparable to Manny’s. Also, for comparison Dunn was 7 RBI’s in 40AB’s.
Seeing that the Wilpon’s aren’t going to change their mind based on Omar’s wishes alone I’m hoping the script plays out as sign Lowe and Lowe comes in and helps Omar sell the Wilpon’s on how Manny is a difference maker without being the distraction he’s made out to be. This would take some sell job, and with Lowe not being thrilled with the Mets offer this scenario may never have a chance to occur. Short of a new voice coming in and pitching Manny to Jeff and Fred I just don’t see them changing their minds. But I can hope, since they need his stick.
GREAT HITTER….BUT no to Manny. I know you root for the UNIFORM, but taking 3 straight pitches and striking out on purpose to “send a message”, faking an injuries, and letting down your entire team (filled with people like ortiz who you are supposedly close with) is not a guy i want around or a guy i want to root for/attempt to win with
I voted no, but when i did the question asked was would you sign Manny to 3years if it meant you could not sign the starting pitcher. Now it simply asks would you sign Manny to a 3year deal. So i think this poll should be scrapped and done over.
perhaps we aren’t looking to sign Manny because F-Mart may be closer to the bigs than we think. his DWL numbers are pretty solid and he’s healthy now
I know I am in the minority but
NO MANNY AT ANY PRICE
He is a clubhouse cancer
He is a terrible defender
He does not play hard
He will quit on his team if anytime he thinks he is underpaid
He turns 37 this May
Let’s start a petition to demand the Mets make no attempt to sign Manny Ramirez.
