According to Toby Hyde, at Mets Minor League Blog,
Fernando Martinez has been added to Leones de Caracas’s playoff roster in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Martinez was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run in his first game.

By the way, in a report for ESPN Deportes, Enrique Rojas says Martinez could be called upon by manager Felipe Alou to play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic in March.
“My heart torn,” Martinez told Rojas. “On one hand, I want to be in spring training with the Mets, to improve my chances of getting a job, but being in the World Baseball Classic with all the big stars would be a dream.”

This was the double he hit in venezuela.
Very smooth swing !
fast, too!
go to youtube.com and look for “FERNANDO MARTINEZ MOONSHOT IN VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE”
Holy cr@p.. F Mart looks like Pujols with that swing.
Lay off the liquor…
go to Mets spring training and make the team
He shouldn’t sweat it, he won’t break ST with the Mets.
Seriously, he practically has a reserved locker at Citi. Go play the WBC!
I don’t think that we will see FMart until September. With hopes of him starting in LF/RF in 2010.
I agree.
I don’t think we will ever see him at Citi Field.
Dimes to donuts he gets traded before its all said and done.
Maybe FMart is the reason the Mets have not gone after a Left Fielder in the free agent market. That and the fact that they still need two more starting pitchers.
Francessa just said he guarantees the Mets won’t sign Manny because they don’t want to pay him. If that’s the case, it’s Wilpon’s duty to support a salary cap along with the Attanasio, McLane, and Coonelly if he’s too CHEAP to sign Manny. Cause the current way of things is unbearable. I can’t witness the yankays sign whoever they want, and the Mets can’t even address a position of need properly. The current system is broken. Fix it. They need to make sure the draft gets fixed(THE RIGHT/FAIR WAY) also.
I dont want to be like the yankees. if i wanted to be like the yankees, id be spending my hard earned money seeing games in the bronx and not queens.
i agree on the draft however, draft and pay for the best available talent you can get. depth and minor league talent brings championships not FA spending.
What do you mean be like the yankays? What DOES That Even MEAN!?? YOU GOTTA SPEND ON PLAYERS IF YOU WANT TO WIN!! DO YOU WANT TO WIN!?? I WANT TO SEE THE METS WIN!! EVERY GAME!! EVERY INNING!! EVERYTHING!!! ALL THE TIME!!!! SIGN MANNY!!!
How has buying a Championship worked out for the Yankees since 2000?
Andrew Friedman didn’t get your all caps memo before this season and I guess the Rockies didn’t get it before last season.
Since you’ve obviously only been watching baseball that long, I guess I don’t need to go back any further.
Money doesn’t always equal happiness. Remember that for when you grow up in real life too.
Trying to buy a championship hasn’t work out for the Yankees since 2000, but at least they were contenders. Most teams never had a chance, including the Mets for the most part.I rather spend and have some hope of being a champion, then not spending and knowing my team will be playing golf in October.
YOU MAKE ME SICK!!!!!!!!
I FEEL LIKE THROWING YOU DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS!!! THEN JUMPING YOU ON YOU FROM THE TOP OF THEM, AND THE KICK YOU ABOUT A THOUSAND TIMES!!!
Still haven’t had that valium prescription filled?
what’s up nym…I’m getting nuts over here….how long have you been ghosting? Did you see my Castillo resolution? What do you think? Trade him and Carlos Muniz to St. Louis for Kennedy, then flip Kennedy and Evans to Toronto for Scott Downs…butter….
LNBGS is hands down the smartest poster I’ve encountered on this site thus far…well done sir…kudos.
It’s spelled Yankees, moron..take the caps lock off too while you’re at it.
regardless of his medications Kherub is 100% right !
Wilpons cant use money as an excuse this a NY mkt which can easily support the signing of both manny and lowe. Dont drink the kool-aid people wake up and stop being ignorant.
Why wasn’t Hal Steinbrenner banned for a year when he insinuated that the yANKAYS were going to sign Sabathia during the season? Ted Turner got suspended for a year when he said they were gonna sign Gary Mathews?
Hank I mean…Tweedle Dum…not Tweedle Dee…
I agree with the comments about the wilpons. just cause the guy uses CAPS doesnt mean hes wrong. the wilpons can more than afford derek lowe and manny ramirez and still make money next year and dont give me some wise crack response about me not knowing their finances. we need derek lowe and frankly if we are not going to get manny we definitely need to take one of the other LFers out there like adam dunn. frankly the closer we get to the season the more i worry about our lineup with castillo, schneider, and a platoon in LF that does not really inspire much confidence (i love murph but fact is he could very well be a total fluke), thats alot of outs.
How do you expect the Mets to fix the system by giving up all their draft picks by picking up guys in the latter ends of their careers?
In the past you didn’t know what you were going to get from early round players, but it appears more and more that the prospecting of young players has improved greatly. Let’s give up two more early round picks for guys that may or may not fall apart a year or two into their contracts. They could be great, but they could also end up like another Pedro Martinez contract, get one good year and then injuries the rest of the way.
I agree with paying above slot to players with greater talent than taking what is there, but by continuously signing picks you will not reach the end goal of adding depth to the system. Take for instance the past two drafts, where most of our depth is in the lower parts of the minors.
I thought the idea was to get younger, not even older?
The THM is back at work! is he still at teenage by the way? lost track
He’s 20 now. :(
Licey’s season was over, he .314 there. Was picked up for the playoffs in Venezuela by Leones de Caracas’s
m bradley to cubs for 3 and 30
HE IS GOING TO HAVE PLENTY MORE CHANCES TO PLAY IN THE WBC HE HAS TO IMPROVE HIS GAME AND GO TO SPRING TRAINING.
I agree with you, let him play spring training.
Obviously it would be a treat for him to play in the WBC, but the Dominican team is generally stacked…I don’t think he would get a lot of AB’s, so PSL may be a better destination for him.
In addition, he will certainly need some rest after the winter league, but he would have remain in game shape if he is to play in the WBC.
Fmart is very Beltranesque!! If that’s the case then he should be able to fit in sometime during the season to help out with our LF needs.
Two sided coin….one says let him play in the WBC…he’ll see better talent there than in SP while alot of the top talent is out.
The other says he’ll get more PT if he stays in SP while other regulars are in the WBC.
I opt for the former since I don’t believe alot of Mets OF will be participating.
everyone needs to stop stressing about manny. this guy will be our left fielder by july. when the chips are down and the games matter, f mart will be in the lineup. worry about a platoon with murphy and get lowe. castillo and pitching is far more significant right now. Teenage Hitting Machine to the rescue.
Fernando needs to be in Spring Training. He’s how old? 19? He’ll have plenty of time to play in the WBC in his career..
I’VE LOOKED AT F MART’S SWING ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS AND IT IS VERY FLUID, THERE’S NO QUESTION IF THIS KID CAN STAY HEALTHY HE CAN DEVELOPE INTO SOMETHING SPECIAL.
Go to the WBC. We all know he won’t make the team. He could gain a lot of experience points from the other players there.
There will be a higher caliber of talent around him training and playing with the WBC team than in the scrubby spring training drills and exhibitions. Let him rub shoulders with Arod, Vlad, Pujols and whomever. It’ll be a solid experience and a taste of what greatness is about. That’s better than doing stretches and getting 30 at bats in A & B games alongside players with numbers in the 60s and 70s on their backs.
Not to burst anyone’s bubble, but do you know how many minor leaguers there are with “great looking swings”? (Alex Escobar had a great looking swing.) So far, in his minor league career, he’s done relatively nothing. He’s even had trouble staying on the field for health reasons. Plus, we already have so many lefties in our line-up. Hopefully, he’ll be up in September and we’ll get a look see against “some” major league pitching.
Btw, I miss the old format or is it “formatt”?
I would love to know how F-Mart is with a Venezuelan winter League team and not with Licey.
The DWL is finished. The Leones picked him up for their playoff run in the VWL. Read all about it in the mets minors blog listed in the SNY Blog Network box on the top right of your screen.
