In an interview with the Sporting News, Braves 3B Chipper Jones had the following to say when asked about the Mets and rivalries:
“They’ve had a running feud with the Phillies the past couple of years. It’s kind of weird not to be in it… We won for 14 consecutive years, and you never, ever saw any bulletin board material. And now that these two teams are on top of the division, they can’t keep their mouths shut. Just go play baseball. It’s Cole Hamels now. It was Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Beltran the past couple of springs. These two teams are constantly going at each other verbally. You know, win with class, lose with class. Just keep your mouth shut and go play your game.”
You mean, classy like Greg Maddux rolling his eyes at every other pitch, while winning Cy Young Awards and Pennants? Or, like John Rocker cursing, insulting and flipping off the Shea Faithful? Or, you mean like telling Mets fans to go put their Yankee hats back on, like you did, Chipper, in 1999? Or like when you questioned David Wright for winning a Gold Glove?
You mean that type of classy, right?
Jones also answers questions about the Braves and Jake Peavy, Tommy Hanson, the Yankees off-season moves, and the Mets getting Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz, which he describes as, ‘the rich get richer.’

LAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRYYYYY
1. I hate chipper
2. he is right though, these guys should just keep their mouths shut, just play and shut up
3. matt, seems like a pretty petty post on your behalf and to compare Rocker (a yahoo who talked trash about NYC citizens) and Maddux being a jerk (especially when we had Glavine who did the same thing for the Braves and Mets…never heard a word out of you then) with these guys talking trash about each other isn’t really correct.
4. still really really hate Chipper
Why is it petty? Chipper tells them to just shut up and play when Matt pointed out an instance he added fuel to the rivalry. See, it’s called “irony”. Or “hypocricy”, whichever you wish to go with.
It ain’t irony, just hypocrisy.
If Matt had given an example where Chipper or any braves player said things like Rollins or Hamels then I would agree with the post, but that never happened, no “talking for the sake of talking” occurence…so yeah, petty.
it would be like a Jets fan whose mad that people rip on them for firing Mangini with 2 out of 3 winning seasons and saying in response “hey well the lions fired marinelli after 0-16, so same thing HA, gotcha”…doesnt really work
Larry likes to hear himself talk.
and I suspect that if he was a FA like Smoltz, he would love to come to the Mets! Wonder if he can play 2B???
Seems like Larry has that not-so-fresh feeling today. Hopefully in a couple of days the PMS will go away and he will be himself again.
u kno its kinda wierd but i really dont hate the guy…hes actually seems like a nice guy and what he said was completely right. play the game and keep ur mouth shut..
I agree, but he can’t really compare the Braves run to now. There was no trash talking because there was no one to really talk trash to. They won it for 14 straight years. If the Phillies won it for 14 straight what would we really have to say to trash talk?
And I really don’t get how signing Krod and trading for Putz is an example of the RICH getting RICHER. So the Braves could not have paid 12 million for a closer and traded 6 players for a reasonable Putz?
The Braves have plenty of Putzes, starting with Chipper himself.
(Sorry, couldn’t resist)
I had a recent business dealing with Larry Jones, and he could not have been more pleasant and accommodating to work with.
I loved hating the Braves, but I don’t typically hate the players.
Same thing with the Phillies. Hate the unis, but not the guys. (A couple of exceptions for each case.)
really wow, tell me more
Hard for me to get into specifics, but it involved working with him during batting practice, and he was very generous with his time and thoughtful with his approach to what we were discussing. Other ballplayers I’ve dealt with in similar situations have been dismissive or downright rude, but Larry took him time and really gave some thought to what we were (he was) doing.
it seems as though the phills and braves have come out officially talking junk in regards to the mets…but the mets imo have not said anything to encourage or entertain these fueds…are the mets taking the high road?
HAHAHAHA – You go get ‘em, Matt.
What do we expect from someone who names his kid Shea b/c of how much luck he had hitting there?
Chipper must be moving into middle age where remembering things isn’t what it used to be.
Or maybe he just wanted to get in on the act……
I think he’s just becoming a grouchy old man
Matt is obsessed with hating Greg Maddux.
He just wants to get under our skin and since his team can no longer outplay us, he’s taking a different tack.
Like his comments about David Wright and the Gold Glove or Silver Slugger last year.
I cant hate Chipper at all. I was lucky enough to spend batting practice in the braves dugout during an interleague game in 98 at Yankee stadium. (long story) I was with 3 other of my high school teammates, we spent the entire BP sitting in the dugout, you would expect stars like maddux chipper and millwood to just ignore us, but no, they spend half of batting practice bs’ing with us while sitting on the dugout steps.
chipper was pretty cool, cracked a bunch of jokes. made fun of shea ! but he was pretty cool.
Go on with your bad self, Matt
how can anyone hate maddux? because he rolled his eyes? come one.
As nerds we should all love Maddux. The guy was a nerd and lived a jocks dream all the way to the HOF.
the real, hahaha. true huge nerd, but one of funniest guys in mlb
I always thought of this guy as a scumbag. Great ball player in his day, but a scum bag. Poor bag doesn’t know what to do with himself now that the Braves can’t win anymore….
Kinda have to disagree, while as a Met fan I know how much he has hurt us over the years…I think scumbag should be saved for guys who really deserve it, I.E. Rocker, Clemens, Bonds…Larry is a hall of famer, and actually seems like a nice guy….
Have to agree.
Larry is one of those Braves ‘we all love to hate’ just b/c he’s been a Brave all these years. I certainly wouldn’t put him in the same cla-ss (or cla-ssless) category of Roger Clemens. Now there’s one – Clemens we all had reason to hate on the field – and now good reason to dislike off the field as well.
Maybe scumbag is a bit harsh but I recall many years of him making down right disparaging comments about Mets players and the team in general that go beyond just establishing a rivalry, which I am ok with. At the very least he is a HUGE hypocrite with these comments.
What’s next on the list of insignificant things today?
1) Patch
2) Chipper.
Kind of funny that Chipper is #2 behind a uniform patch.
Greg Maddux was so good, that when he rolled his eyes, you KNEW the ump just made a mistake.
Maddux is the greatest of our generation. Who cares he was a Brave…quit hating
One of but a case could be made for him.
He may have been one of the best “pitchers” of all time. To have the stuff he did and do it mostly with selection and control is amazing.
yep…
Not many, if any, “knew” how to pitch like Greg Maddux. At his best, he was a clinic in the art of pitching 34 times a year. He used fundamentals, scouting and smarts to succeed.
not to mention all of the gold gloves…
Pedro developed similarly, but Maddux was the grandmaster.
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Rays are close to signing Pat Burrell to a two-year, $16MM deal.
So we now know the market for Dunn and Abreu.
I think this sets the Wiggy deal too. Something around 6.5 for Wiggy.
I would be happy with Dunn, Abreu or Wiggy for LF.
I would almost prefer wiggington out of that crew, since he can play more positions (and has a background, and expected salary, that could support being a platoon/super utility guy).
Plus I can’t stand the thought of Abreu, and dno’t know what to make of Dunn, and wiggy is at least RH.
I would talke any of the 3. They all add something different. Like Abreu or not he would be a good LF with a high OBP and steal some bases. Perfect #2 hitter.
Dunn obviously provides protection from a drop off year with Delgado.
Wiggy I like because he can play other positions.
Should be able to get one of them on a bargain.
I would have to guess Dunn and Abreu will command more than Burrell.. I think the Rays may have overpaid considering the current market.
THis kinda hurts the mets chances of bringing in a power bat at a deal for the OF unless they decide to spend on hitting instead of pitching.
Way to go rays.
I agree Kalihan. I don’t think he’s worth that much and I’d rather have Bradley/Dunn. Especially since they’re filling a dh hole Bradley could be perfect for them.
I haven’t heard any Bradley talk. Interesting option but not sure it is on the radar. Have you heard anything?
All I heard was that the Rays were interested, and this was a while ago, but obviously that’s not the case anymore. I imagine there’s a good chance he resigns with the Rangers.
Wait nevermind. This is only 8 million per. I think they got great value. For some reason I was thinking it was 16 per.
According to a few reports on MLBtraderumors.com, Bradley is being heavily courted by the Cubs and he might get a three year offer factoring in Burrel’s deal.
I would to have him on a three year deal. He is in the thick of his peak years. A solid mix of offense and defense.
It’s just a case of Chipper feeling left out of the mix and there seems to be a sentiment that he is not happy with the effort the Braves are putting forth to be competitive with the Mets and Phillies.
I think it’s clear that the mets should do anything but shut up. They should be more vocal and have more pride in themselves and the team.
The bullpen is a good excuse for why they lost last year and in 2007 and even in 2006, but the reality is that these are some of the softest guys in all of baseball. Can anyone remember the last time a Met ran over a catcher or a second baseman? I don’t even recall one instance last year. The only players that showed any toughness were Pelfrey and John Maine. Without Lo Duca and to a lesser extent Milledge we have no enforcers left on our team. This is why I think the #1 guy the mets should be going after is none other then Milton Bradley.
Milledge the enforcer? Might as well brought Burgos back and told him to stay in the car.
Maybe Milledge didn’t have the best numbers, but there is no doubt that when he was on the field the Mets were a more exciting team then they are today. He brought energy to the entire team and when push came to shove he would do what needed to be done to win and to protect his fellow teammates unlike the majority of the Mets today.
Chipper Jones could save my grandmother from a burning building and then go back in to save my dog. And I’d still hate him.
As an animal rights activist my question is how old is the dog? If just a young dog then why did he chose the old woman? Does he have no heart at all?
LOL ! You guys are two funny. As a dog lover myself I wouldn’t leave w/o either one.
I just don’t understand why Chipper felt the need to comment at all about us or the Phillies. It’s not like either one said anything about the Braves……
And if he thinks it’s ‘cla-ss’ just to play and keep your mouth shut then he should have done exactly that….
You’d have to know my dog to understand. More than likely she started the fire. On purpose.
So you have another ‘Marley’ dog? LOL.
I read that book. As misbehaved as that dog was, that family loved him….
Heh, my friends/relatives were trying to drag me to see that movie over the holidays. I just can’t do it I know I’ll cry like a little girl.
dang censor: How cla$sy is it to have an 18-month affair with a H00ters waitress while married to someone else?
Censor strikes again:
Cla$sy Chipper:
“The affair was one of several Jones had following the 1996 World Series, the news service said. During the Braves’ final spring training in West Palm Beach, Florida, in March 1997, he met a waitress at H0oter’s and the woman, who has returned to her Michigan home, gave birth to a boy in March.” sportsillustrated.cnn.com/ October 23, 1998
Why are my comments awaiting moderation!? All I did was quote Anchorman and try to bring a little humor to today’s postings!!
“ss” after an “a” will get blocked
I am not a Phillies fan but the Phillies can talk all they want they wont now that they have won.
Im not a fan of talking at all. I want to see the Mets show grit and heart but do it on the field and not in the papers, TV, or radio.
I want to see them play with an attitude this year like its them against the world and who cares who hates them or likes them just play hard and with heart and don’t take crap from anyone.
I agree, but these are the same bunch of guys from the last three years. Why should we believe that all of a sudden they are going to get gritty. Maybe David Wright will and I can see it in Schneider, but who else is going to change? Reyes is soft. Beltran needs to protect his injuries. Delgado is old and cares more about his next contract then the ring. Church is afraid of another concussion. Castillo can only add grit to the team via subtraction. Our hope is really left to Tatis and Murphy. I think this job will have to fall in Murphy’s hands.
you are right … I am hoping maybe K-Rod, Putz and the new bullpen puts when in the flying Hawaiians head lol. There lineup is kind of soft …. hoping it comes from Santana, Pelf, Maine hopefully Lowe and the new bullpen.
Maybe if it starts with the pitching staff it will rub off on some of the guys in the everyday lineup.
Wouldn’t the definition of:
‘I want to see them play with an attitude this year like its them against the world and who cares who hates them or likes them just play hard and with heart and don’t take crap from anyone.’
….be just that? We have to SHOW them we’re not gonna take any crap lying down. True, the best way to do that is to win, but on our way to winning, wouldn’t you like to see Big Pelf put one behind Chipper’s ear? Not hit him, just send the message:
‘Get off my field, old man. This game belongs to the young, this season belongs to the Mets’.
You are right it is. That is what I want to see. I don’t want to hear them talking about we are the team to beat and blah blah blah. I want them to shut up and do it on the diamond. Do things like you said put one in Larry’s grill.
Chipper is right. But he is still a hypocrite.
In that same article, he says how the Braves didn’t get Peavy b/c Peavy didn’t want to go there. That’s not true. The Braves didn’t want to give Peavy a full no-trade clause.
I thought they didn’t want to give up Escobar?
yeah in some ways he is right, shut up and play ball, let your actions speak luder than your words, sweep the phils and we can say we are better
Okay I figured out why my quote was “awaiting moderation”….it’s because I used the word c h e es e….seriously. Why is that word on a block…no pun intended. That makes no sense!!
how can he had said the metsare back and forth with the phillies? they’re the one running their mouth against us while we stand stil!! they keep taking shots at reyes and co.. i wish somebody from the mets have guts and say something back..
I think Larry needs to take a good long look at John Rocker, and rethink what he just said.
I’ve been waiting for CHIPPER to shut up for years it seems…but alas, two is company and three is a crowd in the NL East…I can’t stand the idea of the number of TUMS I would need to deal with a 3 team rivalry….I already consider the Marlins 3rd anyway…because they are MET playoff killers….argh…
HEY MATT,
THANK YOU FOR TELLING IT LIKE IT IS, THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT LARRY CAN TALK UP ALOT OF SMACK, WHAT YOU’LL NEVER HEAR COME OUT OF HIS PIE HOLE IS THE FACT THAT THE BRAVES COULD HAVE WON THOSE DIVISION TITLES WITHOUT HIM.
THAT, MY FRIEND IS REALITY.
Always respected Chipper because he can walk the walk and talk the talk. Hated him because he killed the Mets with his bat. But a guy who named his kid Shea–and ordered seats from the stadium as memorabilia–cannot be all bad.
