View: Citi Field Inaugural Season Patch
By Matthew Cerrone - Jan 5, 2009 11:27 am

Update, 3:59 pm:

The patch is being sold on customized jerseys at MLB.com.

Original Post:

According to Patch Collectibles, the attached image is CitiPatchof the official Citi Field 2009 Inaugural Season Patch from the Mets and MLB.

This is one of the most basic, uninspiring designs I have seen in quite some time.  I mean, what team is this patch even for?  What stadium is it for?  It doesn’t say.  I can almost guarantee we could have crowdsourced a significantly better patch than this here on MetsBlog?  In fact, that would have been a cool way to include the fans in to the process.

I wonder if this will be featured on the team’s uniform.

Of course, as a person in the comment’s section points out, this patch will look a lot better if it’s on Derek Lowe’s arm

  1. zer09 says:

The patch is crap, no doubt. But I think the fans care more about how the team plays more than the patch on their sleeve. Slap that thing on Lowe’s shoulder and we’re good to go.

  2. sincekindergarten says:

Supposedly, $cott Bora$ told Omar last night that the Mets have to pony up $16 mil a year “just to be involved in the negotiations.”

    • stickguy says:

So, are Boras and Lowe going to negotiate with each other when no other team decides to offer that much?

Omar should just give his counter (3/42, or whatever it is) and say take it or leave it.

    • dave27 says:

Good for Scott Boras, because no one is paying $16MM for Derek Lowe.

    • dave27 says:

Scott Boras also said teams needed to come to the table with $20MM over 10 years to be involved with Beltran, and we got him for 7/$137MM. Boras’s routine is just getting old.

  3. mikey_FF says:

The patch is terrible because it’s basically the same terrible logo that they designed for Citi Field. Lazy garbage. Hope the team plays better than this crap logo and patch design.

  4. shea_guevara says:

Hey, that barebones design is all Citigroup can afford these days.

  5. alex242 says:

U-G-L-Y!! god it seems everything the mets do this days is kinda weird.. and pathetic..

  6. godlylik says:

it’s a great logo… not, the logo will be tilted to the left as well… exciting stuff….. stupid overpaid graphic designer who got lazy as all hell, just because it has the mets colors, at least put the stadium name on it…

  7. kidfromqueens says:

I actually don’t mind the extreme understated look here. It’s for a uniform sleeve, so it’s not like there’s going to be any confusion about who and what it’s representing. I never really understood the detailed patches that you have to get a foot or two away from to read and see the detail on. How often is anyone going to walk up to a major leaguer in uniform and stare at their shoulder that closely? Or see a close-up focused on the patch on TV? Sometimes, you can watch a whole game on TV and never figure out what one of these things is for…

    • kidfromqueens says:

Just to clarify here, I’m not saying that I like this particular design- I just prefer understatement to busy overstatement, which is the way that most of these things go…

  8. alex242 says:

The Rangers have received inquiries on Vicente Padilla (Braves) and Michael Young. Young has been loosely linked to the Twins, Mets, Angels, Dodgers, and Royals.

everytime i see a 2b linked to us, the more happy i’d get knowing that bum won’t be our 2b in this year

  9. Alban says:

Run a contest Matt. Even if it doesn’t get used, if this gets enough publicity, the creative output of Mets fans may be considered for future endeavours.

As a prize, you could offer something simple, like a pair of tickets to the first Mets/Phillies game at CitiField.

    • citifieldsforever says:

a prize ???…that aint gonna happen.

Notice this blog is no longer presented by Geico ( one less major sponsor)

    • mezz sec 7 says:

      arnor.ithaca.edu/~sgreenb3/comp105/patch2.jpg

thats my entry if there is a contest, if not, i was bored and needed a productive way to waste five minutes

  10. fongulalou says:

Maybe in return for Boras “allowing’ us
    to sign a a package of Lowe,Manny&Cora
for a Hundred Mil, Wilpons could agree to
a sleeve patch “Boras Agency-We get our clients top dollar”?

  11. citifieldsforever says:

Slap that logo in front of carlin’s fat head and I might actually watch the post game report

  12. dominicanboy08 says:

what would it take to get Noah Lowry and Bengi Molina from the Giants? lowry can be our 5th starter and molina is one of the best catchers around.

maybe trade delgado, evans, kunz and another low prospect. then sign dunn with the money we were gonna spend on a 5th starter. we wont have to worry about 1B next offseason.

    reyes
    murphy
    wright
    dunn
    beltran
    church
    molina
    castillo(I hope he is gone!!!)

    BTW, we still need lowe!!

I dont know if this is possible but I’m just been creative, I am getting tired of all the lowe talks.

    • Genesis Does says:

Id be stoked if we could swing Molina and Rowand from the Giants and give them some salary relief to pursue Manny. Its pretty clear the Wilpons hate Manny, even if he does damn near guarantee a championship/.

  13. mr_hellcat says:

That’s what we get for having a corporate-named stadium. They can’t put the name of the stadium on the patch because MLB rules prohibit players having corporate sponsors on their uniforms.

    l-a-m-e with a lowercase ‘l’.

  14. mr_hellcat says:

Props to metsguyinmichigandotblogspotdotcom for posting this image on December 22nd.

  15. MRenz31 says:

Anyone notice that the shade of blue on this patch is different and darker then the normal royal blue.

  16. wrightfan24 says:

i dont believe this is the citi field logo..
i have seen another logo for citi field that hasnt yet officially been released but it blows away this logo/patch.
it compares more to the new yankee stadium logo…
look out for it since it probably will be released soon

    • godlylik says:

the logo you are talking about was released on january 1st… by MLB at least and will only be used on merch sold inside of citifield… for some strange reason…

  17. wrightfan24 says:

i also believe that will use the logo above in some capacity but will use the new logo that hasnt been released as well…
they probably will use both logos and alternate

  18. CaseStreet says:

Glad to have my Jersey w/ Shea logo.

  19. oleosmirf says:

who cares about a stupid patch

what we should be worrying about is that our lineup has 5 capable hitters and our rotation has 2.5 capable pitchers

    • fongulalou says:

You know, I,ve been a pretty harsh critic of
Omars for some time now BUT I’ll tell ya,
I’m starting to actually feel bad for the guy.
One can see why he’s aged like a President.
To have to deal w/Boras is impossible.
Thanks to the bronx bums for tilting the market (again) with the CC&AJ signings as
well as the cubbies giving 4yrs to Dempster
Lowe will never sign for less than that and
with Boras’promises to Manny,he’s not signing anywhere for less than 3yrs/75mil..
This is holding up the entire market so that
even if Omar wanted to move on,he can’t.

      • stickguy says:

Well, there might be some unhappy players when they are sitting out 2009! They can demand, want, etc. anything, but unless a team will willing to pony it up, it just won’t matter.

Boras can only hold the market up for so long, until GMs move on elsewhere, or the players themselves stage an uprising.

  20. wrightfan24 says:

the logo i have viewed doesnt say mets on it but it has the rotunda in it…much better looking logo.

its a rectangular box…with citi field written on top then the rotunda below with “INAUGURAL” written in a banner..then “SEASON” below and “2009″ below that..

i like this logo alot..look out for it

    • casey s. says:

cool. where did you see it? can you direct us to it?

      • wrightfan24 says:

        casey-

the logo i mentioned i am not sure what it will be used for but it has been created…since it hasnt been released- there wont be anywhere to direct you to. my guess (wink) is that it will be on the season tickets/season ticket gift-
i would like to see this logo on the jersey but someone mentioned above that corporate names cant be on jersey and since the citi field name is in this logo i have seen, i dont know if it can be on the jersey…i am sure the mets will use this logo though because its just another thing they can sell.

i would think sooner than later this logo will be released…
like i said it is much similar to the yankees new stadium logo than the boring patch above in the post

  21. cyclone says:

Man, this is really bad. How do you expect to not get called Freddie Coupons if this is the best design you can come up with to celebrate the opening of your new stadium? I really hope this is a bad joke, other stadium commerative patches had at least a piece of the stadium in the design (Nationals Park, Busch Stadium, etc.) Is this really the best they could do?

    • Tidewater says:

If this is indeed the patch it typifies the complete lack of verve and creativity that has marked the Wilpon era.

    • wrightfan24 says:

      hello cyclone-

did u see what i wrote-
there is another logo that has yet to be introduced to the public i have seen it because i know someone who works with the mets…it has a pic of the rotunda…
i have the pic available if interested

      • cyclone says:

What you described at least sounds better and more along the lines of what they should have had in mind to begin with. I don’t even know why they would bother selling these.

        • wrightfan24 says:

my guess is that like lgnym said, its possible corporate names cant be on jerseys and they had to come up with a patch that didnt have the citi field name on it…the logo i described with the rotunda has citi field written above it

      • jesusmaramba says:

        Wrightfan24-

Can you send me a pic of the logo?? I’d love to see it.

  22. chachmaster says:

that is so weak and uncreative i think its a waste of time to even produce them

  23. i thought that was a coming soon thing for the patch . wow that looks like it took a goods 2min to make. horrible

  24. LGNYM says:

LOL people seriously get all worked up about a friggin’ patch?

I don’t think teams are allowed to have corporation names on their uniforms, so that would explain why it doesn’t say CitiField. And secondly, anyone who isn’t a complete nitwit should be able to figure out a patch about an inaugural 2009 season on a Mets uniform is for the Mets. And any semi-knowledgeable fan would see that patch on the Mets uniform should be able to figure out its about Citifield. And anyone who can’t put that information together probably doesn’t care about the patch and/or baseball or isn’t worth explaining things too.

    • number15 says:

agreed. it’s the same when we get a new alternate jersey or we change our spring training unis. who really cares what they wear? go intern at vogue magazine with sean avery if you want to critique fashion. otherwise, can we stick to discussion about the actual team?

      • cyclone says:

The Wilpons aren’t putting enough money into improving the actual team, so it really doesn’t warrant much of a discussion.

  25. therealsince86 says:

Good lord this is a slow offseason. We are debating a patch on a uniform. I guess we have moved on from Lowe and Manny to Patch.

Lets talk about the bench or the other relief pitcher or even 2010 but please I don’t care about next year’s uniform colors or patches.

  26. sabermetrician says:

“Scott Boras also said teams needed to come to the table with $20MM over 10 years to be involved with Beltran, and we got him for 7/$137MM.”

  27. sabermetrician says:

We got Beltran for seven, one nineteen.

  28. NickA33 says:

The patch and the logo for CItiField itself is crap. When the Falcons and Thrashers were desiging their team logos it was decided by fans. The city did a city wide competition to see who would submit logo designs.

It would have been cool if that were the case for our new stadium…

    • cyclone says:

That would have made too much sense for the Wilpons. When it comes to the Wilpons, they only care if it makes cents.

      • mikey_FF says:

        makes “cents”. Ha! Good one.

      • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Meh. Not a huge fan of Atlanta’s most recent logos…

Although the contest route did produce Milwaukee’s famous “Gloved” MB logo, too, so…

  29. casey s. says:

so, there is now talk of another patch with the rotunda and that’s great. but, can we just for a minute address the fact that a website is asking $15 for this version? who would pay $15 for this patch?

  30. the clap says:

Time for Fred Wilpon to start spending money on a professional graphic designer instead of letting Jeffy tool around with his etch-a-sketch.

  31. the_other_matt says:

All that money saved on a design team will go into getting a LF’er.

  32. LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Boras seems like he’d be a headache… but I’d imagine his shtick is somewhat predictable over the long run (scrapbook, “mystery team,” etc.).

It seems like it would be a lot more gray-hair inducing for Omar to be dealing with a constant stream of randoms… and for Bora’s clients, who seem to have to wait until it’s their turn for priority treatment, rather than getting the full attention of their representation at the offseason’s start (like Tellem’s, or other slightly less prolific agents’ clients).

  33. surgenyc says:

Stop playing games Omar bring Manny. I’m a mets fan and as of right now philly will win the NL and go to the World Series. I don’t care if the bullpen is better now but without manny in the lineup mets still ain’t making it to the playoffs. There’s no pitching and your 1-4 hitters are always on and off. You need manny and Lowe but I would like to see Perez there because he is much younger.

  34. LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Without the Citi font, it almost seems like something out of a corporate-design template book, as if it should say “Logo Patch #5098A3″ instead of “Inaugural Season.”

(Think I’d like it better with the meta-appeal of a “Bland Corporate Logo” or “Your Tax Dollars Here” embroidered on there.)

  35. ccmetfan says:

It would’ve been nice to put the picture of the new stadium in the center with the phrase ” a new era” or something like that

  36. bob burket says:

YOU CAN’T GET MORE PLAIN VANILLA THAN THIS. IT PROBABLY COST THE CHEAPEST TO MAKE. THE METS CAN’T EXPECT TO WIN ON THE CHEAP. COME ON WILPONS PAY LOWE AND MANNY AND GET ON WITH IT!!!!

  37. jesusmaramba says:

I want to see the patch wrightfan24 has.

  38. Drucifer says:

If there was ever an inaugural ball park patch that was uninspiring it is this one.

It needs at least the city skyline.

  39. bkfitz says:

That is just horrible. The Citi Field logo is terrible to begin with. Now we have to see this garbage on their jerseys?

  40. thekid8 says:

this is infact the sleeve patch and will be on the sleeve next season.. its already for sale on mets.com on authetic jerseys — also.. MLB rules prohibit teams from wearing sponsiorships i.e. CITI field being citi group or citi bank so just like the phillies in their 1st season in citizens bank park… they cant mention its name because its a bank! the design though is horrible lol

  41. bucknersankles says:

THE LOGO LOOKS LIKE IT BELONGS ON ONE OF THE CLEANING CHEMICAL BOTTLES UNDERNEATH MY SINK, GIVE ME A FREAKIN BREAK.

  42. metsaddict09 says:

way too plain. the shea stadium patch was so much better

  43. metsaddict09 says:

check out the new yankees patch. much better than ours unfortunately

  44. ProudMetFan says:

    WTF

not to be so worked up, but like matt said this thing is beyond uninspirational.

THIS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT(imo)THE LAMEST ARTICLE OF CLOTHING I HAVE EVER SEEN ON ANY SPORTS TEAM. THAT INCLUDES THE BIGS, COLLEGE, HIGH SCHOOL, EVEN LITTLE LEAGUES. AND NOT JUST BASEBALL.

GIVE ME A DAMN BREAK AT PUT METS ON IT. JUST FREAKIN METS. I HONESTLY DONT CARE WHO IS WEARING IT, BUT IT MAKES US LIKE THAT PATHETIC BORING OTHER TEAM IN NEW YORK, WHILE THE YANKEES PATCH HAS EVERYONE OOING AND AAHING.

THIS (as some met fans would say) IS A BLOW TO THE METSTICLES. AN EXTREMELY POINTLESS ONE AT THAT.

I HATE THIS RIDONKULOUS SIDEWAYS RECTANGLE, AND TO SLANT THE FREAKING LETTERS IS FREAKING MORONIC. FREAKING FREAKING FREAKING FREAKING.

We should have contest (just between us fans), to make a kick tuchus logo. Then we should decide upon the best one and then send it to the club.

    WTF

  45. mezz sec 7 says:

i liked matts idea of a fan created patch, and being a freshmen marketing student at ithaca college with some graphic design experiance, i though id give it a try.

the patch i made can be seen at:
    arnor.ithaca.edu/~sgreenb3/comp105/patch2.jpg

although im not an artist, i am skilled at photoshop, and other desktop publishing programs. the idea of the patch was to use citi field branding logo (which i dont like by the way), and use a silhouette of the distinct arches that make up the rotunda, to create a cool looking patch to commemorate the new stadium.

i am open to feed back, feel free to comment, and as always…

    lets go mets!

    • wrightfan24 says:

      mezz-

its a nice spin to the logo the matt posted…
but i didnt really like that logo at all.
      yours was a bit better…
i like one with an actual stadium which is something i think they will release soon-
